  • The new season of the Mandalorian is out, and with it, the Child (AKA Baby Yoda). In this episode we open and review these figures by Hasbro and Kenner. You will also see how I got mine for free, recolored them, and added hair. I will try something similar with the basic Mattel version (little beanbag) for the body parts. I am not very good with layering (this is what you do here), but I hope if I take it slow, it will turn out good. I also got a reborn cloth body which I chose to match Grogu's proportions (half legs, will attach some 3D-printed feet I modded myself) and dye to match his body color. I will also get some teddybear modular skeleton (basically ball joints) which you can fully adapt to Grogu's body. Oh, and hair, of course. I have some natural white mohair wool left which I will use. But I will use just glue to attach it, no rooting. I do not think rooting looks that great.

    • @YourGeekFix
      @YourGeekFix  Před 3 lety +1

      I think so. Several people have, you can read their comments. The key is to do it a little at a time and to take your time. The ears have to be done using the oil crayons. Pensions won't work there. Normal color pencils also may not blend adequately. I did it this way rather than airbrush to make it more accessible to do.

    This is a crazy coincidence, real helpful! Super big coincidence too, as I just bought one of these as a gift and wanted to make it unique.
    Are you going to also be doing the 11” plush? That one has a vinyl head so you’d be able to do the hair rooting, and I’m interested in how you’d go about doing that. I wonder if you’d be able to use poly fill and a felting needle to do that with.

    • @YourGeekFix
      @YourGeekFix  Před 3 lety +3

      Thanks Robert. I initially thought of using my smallest drill bit, which is thinner than a felting needle. Maybe smaller too. The head is still pretty thick. You could push hairs at that point. If you can push, I would probably use nylon doll, or human hair that is blond. You could still mix in poly fill. The key is to start at an inch out and work your way in until it looks right. I don't know if you have access to Stan Winston school videos, they do a great tutorial on hair that is thinner than dolls. Great projects by the way. The Captain America shield looks awesome!

    • @YourGeekFix
      @YourGeekFix  Před 2 lety +1

      If they are like mine, heating it up slightly should allow you to mix the colors a little bit better. It's hard because those ears are a fine rubber. Remember the inside of the ears is done with morave oil pastel crayon . So adding a little heat with hair dryer helps.

    Hey man! First off, your video is an absolute godsend; I haven’t been able to find anyone who modified the Hasbro animatronic. Though I do have a few inquiries...
    So, I don’t have any oil/pastel pencils. But I do have powder pastels sticks and watercolor pencils. I don’t know if you have used watercolor pencils before, but they work pretty well when used on top of Mister Super Clear Sealant. If you’ve used them before, what do you think? Should I just apply the pastel with a small paintbrush, or use the pencils?
    On the note of sealant, I’m curious what it does to the texture of the ears? Does it still feel somewhat rubbery/fleshy after the sealant? Or is the texture completely different?
    Also, how durable is it post-modifying? I’ll probably end up bringing this guy along if I cosplay Ahsoka sometime next year (because, why not) and I’d hate for the paint job to get damaged... I also have my three year old brother who loves running around the house with Grogu, and I’m wondering if the modifications could withstand that?
    Finally, I’m thinking about weathering the cloak a bit... any thoughts?
    Thanks again!

    • @YourGeekFix
      @YourGeekFix  Před 3 lety +2

      Don't get wrapped up into pencil type. You could use a lot of options for the color. The process still works with layers. Most color types can be blended and wiped off. This is true for the plastic. The rubber is a different story. I used oils on th4e ears because pencil will not stick or blend as well. With water color pencils, very little dampness is needed for the blending process. The clear sealer, dull, will not bother the ears or dry them out. I had the luxury of being able to test on the cheep baby Yoda first, but not necessary. The biggest thing to remember is you can always fix paint. Be most careful with the glue on the ears. It will not come off. If you take your time and keep tweaking textures and colors until you feel good, it will look awesome! You will do great Sophia! One step at a time, experiment, and have fun!

    • @YourGeekFix
      @YourGeekFix  Před 3 lety +2

      For cosplay, the animatronics' ears are fragile. He was made for kids, but I think safest to be put in one spot. I think the bigger doll may be a better one for cosplay. It is possible, ifg you make the carry bag and kept him on your chest ajd were careful, that he could survive and make it easier to walk around for long periods of time.

    • @YourGeekFix
      @YourGeekFix  Před 3 lety +2

      When I do these videos, I pick the cheapest most accessible materials. I would otherwise typically airbrush this. So, the pencils are a cheep set from Walmart. However, you could equally use any you can get. Or go with more expensive oil pastels or water color pencils. Keep in mind, for the animatronic you will need to avoid pencils on the ears. Use the crayon style or paint on the color. That will avoid the rubber from drying out. I tried to find my set to post a link, but could not find it. One step at a time, experiment, and have fun! You will do great Peggy!
