Black Adam is the latest DC Comics superhero movie and the latest big budget action film by The Rock. But how accurate is it to the comic books? This episode looks at plot, supporting characters, places and things, and Black Adam himself to point out the specific areas it drew from the comic books like Captain Marvel and JSA.

Actually, Adam origin in the film is more close to the new 52 version, where it was his nephew his powers and gave to Adam to save his life. However, after his nephew refuse to free Kahndaq through violent means, Adam killed him and was punished by the Wizard Shazam until he was free by Sivana.

As a huge JSA fan, I did notice quite a bit from Geoff Johns run in the early 2000s. The general plot of Adam taking over Kandaq and the JSA seeing him as an illegal invader was true to the comics. Personally, for spin-offs/sequels, I'd really like an adaptation for The Golden Age in the form of an 8-10 episode show to introduce the JSA, and maybe a Fate show. Black Adam is in kind of a hard spot because his most iconic stories are probably Black Reign and 52, and they don't follow directly that well into one-another without some time passing. Plus, being an antagonist himself, it isn't like he has a huge Rogues gallery. Perhaps you could have him help the JSA against Johnny Sorrow, Shadowpact against Eclipso or the Spectre, the Marvel Family against Mr Mind's Monster Society, or Superman against Darkseid (I imagine this one is their plan from what they've said in interviews).
Character development-wise, I'd say what would make the most sense would be a movie about Black Adam letting go of his past and starting a new life and family in the present, so perhaps some villain with Time or Reality Warping powers or Illusion magic would make the most sense. So someone like Nero, Mr Mxyzptlk, Mr Mind or Eclipso should work.

    • @fattiger6957
      @fattiger6957 Před rokem +4

They did leave some threads to follow for sequels and spinoffs. They definitely have enough to make a spinoff about the JSA, especially with the future of Dr Fate (I'm trying not to spoil the movie) And since the movie's JSA lineup was tiny, there are so many characters they can add. Mr Terrific is an easy add since DC seems high on him and he's got super science going for him. The Sandy Hawkins version of Sandman would be very visually interesting to see on screen. I would love to see Power Girl in a movie, but I kinda doubt DC will ever use her.
Intergang could be used in other DC movies to set up the big showdown with Darkseid down the line.
There's the obvious team-up/fight between Black Adam and Shazam.
And the big one (what Dwayne Johnson has been pulling for) is Black Adam vs Superman. I have no idea what the plot would be. It could be its own movie or could be featured in Black Adam 2 or Shazam 3.

From a reasoning perspective the Fawcett Comics originals had very defined rules... the idea of Black Adam was that he was equally as powerful as Captain Marvel and from that perspective it would be catastrophic for a character like that, leaning to be greedy, etc to exist... the stupidity was the logic that once he turned back human he would just "age away to dust" which was just weak story given these characters were MAGICAL powered.
DC was technically the villain here as they were basically mad that the Captain Marvel Comics were outselling Superman and the fact that readers felt he was way more relatable and thus sparked the imagination than Superman did.. . Because Billy Batson was an ordinary human and not some special alien being that automatically gets powers on Earth.
In fact DC often contradicted itself when they claimed that Superman was weak to the supernatural and magical beings... which is what Captain Marvel and Black Adam, Doctor Fate, Spectre are...
As far as how DC reinvented the characters. The times were different and writers had experience managing super powerful villains as corny heels that would "run away and get you next time" plus the Comics code association had neutered comic stories to be explicitly for toddlers or something... essentially excluding older readers and stigmatizing Comics as kids and nerd stuff much like videogames which was cultural thing here in the U.S.A. as you could literally get beat up and publicly made fun off or mocked just for talking about comic books...
As such DC had a dismissive attitude towards the character because they maintained their trinity of batman supers and wonderwoman who each had multiple books and often the writers who wrote Captain Marvel and Black Adam stories just focused on dumb and predictable storytelling which was a longstanding problem at DC, especially when they decided to have the multiple Earths and books.
Thus far this new reinvented Black Adam origin is much more sensible and credible...
The original concept was Teth Adam's super powers eventually awakened greed and lust for power which is a bit weak story logic given that he is powered by ancient deities... some of which gave him wisdom to know right from wrong which Captain Marvel never flops on hence why he is more relatable than superman... who's only logic is that he was raised by a good farmer... when the reality is that not all farmers and country folks are all "good people" which is a generalization.
Uncle Ben's sacrifice just comes off as more innocent for Peter Parker because he too was starting to get drunk with power which is I guess why Zack Snyder remade the superman origin in Man of Steel which was just much better than most throw away comic stories
The real problem with this movie is that the kid is kinda shoved in our faces as the mascot of the movie... he knows too much about "superheroes" and it becomes corny af when he keeps mentioning them... he is essentially a fanboys comic reader and often such a character will come off as cringe and offensive to nerd comic readers who are extremely likely to act the same way.
Also that woman was a bit corny too, sure she is being set up as a major character but she comes off as way too preachy (same with the kid) but she was funny as she basically scolded Black Adam and he stayed quiet which is comical material and good writing.
Also there is too much story in one movie... fit an origin, agenda, etc and two hours is not enough... this should have been better planned as two and a half hours... hopefully there's an extended version.

Even though he was just in a few different comic series' issues (1st appearance reprint, the "new" Captain Marvel series in the late 70s, the giant treasury edition and DC Presents. Even in Crisis) , Black Adam was always one of my favorite villains as a kid. Especially the suit (which I prefer in its original depictions of completely black with little shading). A nice classic archvillain. As cool as his battles were, I really wanted to have him go against Earth-S' Ibis and Isis. Interesting to see what modern comics have done with him and some of the JSA. And nice to see Ma Hunkle still getting some spotlight all these decades later.

It would have been great if there was some connective tissue between Black Adam and Hawkman - like an age-old beef because BA blames Kufu for not doing enough to help the people of Kahndaq and thus causing them to suffer. I also wish they could have deepened the relationship between Dr. Fate and Hawkman in a way that shows that Fate had seen Carter Hall die before when they were younger in the JSA and he didn't want it to happen again.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Superman convinced Black Adam to stop and figure out the world before jumping to conclusions and trying to change it. And in the process of self-reflection, he would become better as a result.
Otherwise, Black Adam will do some horrible mistakes. Example:
In comics, when he just woke up, he saw people protesting some businessmen. So, he said “Pharaons take away from people and must be punished”, flies up and dropped that CEO from his penthouse down to the protesters (slat on the pavement).
Instead of gratitude, Black Adam got boooed, since now there would be nobody to compensate those people for being underpaid.
People often forget how simple-minded Black Adam is due to him living many centuries ago - concepts of economy, globalization, interest, stock market and hedge funds, misinformation etc are alien to him.
So, since Superman’s greatest power is finding good in people and giving them the light push they need in the right direction, it is utmost certain that this is exactly what happened.

I remember reading mid 2000s comics in which Black Adam goes insane with grief after Isis' death, and then attacks cities around the world, committing mass murder before Martian Manhunter managed to take away his powers; the fact the 'New 52' version murdered his own nephew to seize the powers Shazam granted the latter, is deplorable.

Maybe it was the low expectations I had, but I liked that it didn't pretend to be deeper than it actually was (unlike certain Marvel movies). Black Adam would have been a better movie if it had featured some Marvel Family members instead of the JSA. For starters, it makes more sense for Billy or Freddie to be the one trying to convince Black Adam that heroes don't kill. Hawkman saying "heroes don't kill" sounded absurd and goes against the very nature of the character. I mean, the guy is either a Thanagarian soldier or a reincarnated Pharaoh... so any way you slice it, killing enemies is part of his job description. Plus, from Superman to Wonder Woman to Aquaman to Batman... most if not all of the movie Justice League has already killed at least once. So it would have made more sense if Captain Marvel had been the one trying to reign in Black Adam.
After all, the JSA even existing came from left field. No real back story was given, nor an explanation as to how they knew Shazam's Magic Word (which is something only the Marvel Family would know.) Truth be told, it was one of the most jarring parts of the movie. The moment you saw them, their tech, their headquarters and heard allusions to a long shared history, the only thing I could think of was: why did they ignore Zod's invasion? And Steppenwolf's invasion? And why neither Wonder Woman nor Batman ever mentioned the JSA when they were recruiting heroes to fight Darkseid?
Bottom line, Warner Bros should have used Black Adam to expand the Justice League's future membership instead of retconning a JSA backstory that doesn't fit. After all, both Hawkman and Dr. Fate have been part of the Justice League of America in both comics and cartoons.
Anyways... I liked most parts of the movie but it "undid" a lot of the world building that had been done before, and lacked the type of easter eggs that drive repeat viewings. Plus, I cringe, throw up in my mouth and roll my eyes to the back of my head all at once, every time I hear or see the word "eternium". Seriously... that's got to be the stupidest and laziest idea ever! It was hack writing when it was introduced in the Legion of Super-Heroes and it literally takes me out of the movie every time it's on screen. Plus, it's totally unnecessary and a complete waste of time. Seriously!!! I mean... even a child knows that if you introduce Kryptonite in the first act, it's going to be used in the third act!!! But was it? Was eternium all that important? Nope!!! So what was the point? Seriously, talk about a movie shooting itself in the foot over and over.

Thanks for this. I haven't seen the movie. Just wanted to say that your description of Hawkman's origin is about as accurate as it could be. The Silver Age Hawkman, one of my favorite characters (yes, I'm that old) was destroyed by Tim Truman's Hawkworld series, and DC has never recovered. I was a big Truman fan before then, but afterword not so much. DC could have easily claimed the Hawkworld series was "Elsewords," but it instead tried to incorporate the series into the mainstream. Give us a "magic" Hawkman and a "science-based" Hawkman, separated by a couple of decades, as you did the two Green Lanterns. Rather, DC tried to incorporate the two characters into one, unsuccessfully into one, in my opinion. A disaster!

Both the movie and the comics that the movie is based upon are so different from the comics I grew up reading back in the 70s, much less the original Captain Marvel/Black Adam stories from the 40s and 50s. The comics are all about change, including the ones I read while growing up, but as I grew older, I resisted the changes, wanting things to be what I grew up with forever. To enjoy the newer comics and movies, I have to let go of my childhood/teenage expectations, and simply enjoy them on their own terms.

I will end up seeing it again for sure when it's on streaming but it wasn't good enough to pay to see it at the cinema for a 2nd time. It's subtle, and you'd have to be knowledgeable of it, but they do have Hawkman mention in passing how he's not afraid to die. I took that to meaning he's aware that he has been reincarnated. Overall, I was honestly underwhelmed by the film. Pierce Brosnan's Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate was the highlight of it, whereas I could not muster up any reason to care about the titular character. The trailer already divulged everything about him, and it was a paint-by-numbers redemption arc that offers little to invest in, in my opinion. Just my general thoughts and observations, also great video.
First, I appreciate you sidestepping the whole issue about Cyclone being recast. My opinion is I don't approve, but I don't approve in general of swapping characters. Create a new one, I'm fine this could have been the daughter of cyclone. I will point out too that it also sticks out a lot for fans because everyone else is so visually on point. Every other character in the movie looks like the spitting image of the comic book character, specifically the JSA edition.
Regarding Black Adams homeland, I was always under the impression that it was created because they were trying to avoid picking any specific country and offending fans in the middle east. For the longest time, Shazam and the Marvel family tied their Origins to Egypt.
Regarding Black Adam and his extended family, I liked the whole concept and I wasn't really happy that DC decided to flame it out in spectacular fashion. For those who don't know, throughout new 52 Black Adam is shown settling into a role as a hero and protector with a loving family. The Marvel family had a talking anthropomorphic tiger, so Black Adam wound up with a talking anthropomorphic crocodile. By the end of 52, it turns out the crocodile is a genetically engineered monster who murders his wife and adopted son. This sends Black Adam on a worldwide murder tour slaughtering an entire country and then honing in on a tropical island where all the evil super villains apparently set up shop.
I have yet to see the movie, but I'm intrigued by what I've seen in the trailers and heard so far, and I like that the rock is pushing for a Black Adam versus Superman, I know they're working on a second shazam movie so if that winds up building into an actual DC Universe franchise I will laugh because of Captain Marvel's storied history in real life as well as the fact that it was probably always the least serious of all DC Comics

E. having the rulers on Kahndaq desicrate his family's tomb/legacy causing the JSA to respond-- then you wouldn't need to shoe horn Intergang (canon fodder) or the numerouse side characters. The mom, kid, and The Rock are limited in acting ability -- and it's painful at times.

I feel like this movie should have been the 2nd Black Adam movie. I’d much rather have seen a movie set in the past and how a man, decent enough to win the favor of Shazam, fell to corruption and, being filled with sorrow, the wizard was forced to entombed him, vowing to pick a more wholesome character in the future. Y’know, like the actual origin story the wizard briefly mentioned in Shazam. 🤦🏽‍♂️ It would have ended in his sealing and as a post credit scene or something, you could have a shortened version of his release found in this movie. Then it would cut to black just before he would wreck the tomb raiders.
Then you already knew his hatred/flaws. You knew his power. You would get excited to see how will the heroes deal with such a menace.
That movie wouldn’t have to deal with introducing him as a villain but showing him to be an anti-hero but wait, he’s now a hero too now.
