  • Final assembly. The making of a intercooler and the piping between the turbo and the intake manifold. Testrun and the sunking feeling that the gearbox isnt holding up the power even a little bit.

    I know your video is 3yrs old but im fixing to rebuild my om603 and i really like your video series on this. Im from missouri USA. Great video, hope the motor is still going strong. I also have a dieselmeken pump with 7.5mm. Mine will have a jeep rubicon 5 speed transmission behind it.

      Hello timeckenrode , when i see videos that are 3 years old i think to myself "well thats not that long ago" and when i watch my own videos that are that age it feels like 10-15 years! 😁😁 The mercedes still runs , i just moved it today actually. You didnt mention on what car you where setting up the OM603 in? I would guess a jeep of some sort?
      In that case one of my newer videos showcase a Willys FC150 with a Volvo B23 engine.

      Actually just a little old ford ranger.
      Glad to know your car is still moving.
      Im in missouri usa and rangers are everywhere. I even have 1 in my back lot, its the only 1993 in America that i know of thats been converted to Right Hand Drive cuz i converted it.
      This new version will sport 2017 ford raptor fiberglass, 15x14 wheels, 35 mud tires and 9" of lift just to name a few.
      Theres a guy in mexico that has a om603 in a grand cherokee on youtube. He rock crawls his.

      Hey thanks Ross, i dont think the W116 ever came with anything else than gasoline-engines here in europe, same thing with the W126models. I am not a traveling man but ive actually been to the states once. A few years ago i went to Anchorage Alaska, rented a pickup truck and toured the small villages around there.

      That sounds like it was a fun trip. You're always welcome to visit me in the state of Maine. I live in the country, it looks a lot like your beautiful country in the videos. I'm a retired (70 year old) engine and transmission swap specialist. I may be able to help you with your slipping transmission for no cost over this winter . I have a turbo om 606 engine that I'm planning on adapting to a Volvo 960 automatic (AW 30-40) that I'll eventually swap into my 82 Mercedes 380sl. I'd be glad to share with you my patterns for the adapter plate. The aw-30 40 (also known as the a340) is a super strong automatic also used behind the turbo supras. It can be rewired for full manual control, no ECU needed.

      ​@@rossconverse7038 Thanks Ross, but as it is now i am loking into swaping the old gearbox with the newer ones from the OM606 (called 722 i think?) , i bought a kit from Ofgear in denmark. Standalone system but yet with automatic gearshifting (if you want to) at some point i also want to swap bellhousing from on a manual bmw ZF gearbox to a mercedes . Lots of plans but now its winter so ill be back in spring 2021 and maybe with new plans and videos. You should document and try to upload your projects to youtube.

      @@Foffe2000 Hi, yes I'm familiar with that transmission controller, I saw you mentioned that in the comments, I didn't realize you bought one already.
      My thinking is if my adapter works to the 960 bell housing, one could use the M90 Volvo transmission that was used behind the 960 for the OM 603.
      I plan to document how I made the adapter plate and share it on the forums.

      Yeah, i think this setup got potential when i fix all small stuff. In the spring of 2021 a new gearbox will be fitted.

    Happy New Year. I tore my OM 603 down a couple of weeks ago and it spun #2 connecting rod bearing and the crankshaft is messed up.See you in the spring when you are thawed out again.

      Happy new year Cullen. If it spun the bearing on the connecting rod bearing theres still a chance that the block and its crancshaft bearing surfaces are salvageable? Maybe its time to go big and try to get a stroker crancshaft? there is one that will give you a 3,5 liter engine.

      @@Foffe2000 It's already the 3.5 liter engine. OM 603.971. Unfortunately, not very common in the US. The crank would have to be machined. The crank is heat treated and I'm not sure if it can be machined. The block is perfect. No wear in the cylinder bores and still has a cross hatch pattern. Looking forward to all your projects for 21.

      @@cullenmiller8170 then i say the crankshaft is a gonner , you better just send it to me in Sweden =) There are 3,5L engines here to but i have never seen one with my own eyes. Joking aside, i think all crankshafts are heat-treated? and the heat treatment should go deep enough that you should be able to go OD within whatever OD-bearings aviable, The machine shop tools should be able to knock of the worn out parts without creating heat and leave a good surface.

      The plan is actually to mount a newer gearbox from the W210 and get it running on a stand-alone gearbox computer from ofgear in denmark. But during the winter i might change plans, well see .. and the insurance on these cars are actually peanut-money here in sweden. And it got M.O.T until nex year and no road-tax on these. But i didnt want to go to the administrative part of getting it street legal just for an hours testing on the road.

      Hello , i would love one of those Jerico gearboxes that you just lift from the gaspedal and bangshift into next gear. But the plan now is a modern 5speed automatic trasnmission from a W210, but sometime during my lifetime i hope to own a Jerico or simular gearbox. The turbo is a Holset HX40 with the 16 exhaust and internal wastegate.

      @@heavy_low_n_slow well with the tranmission the way it is now its hard to tell, but i dont think its that crazy laging if the transmission wouldnt be slipping as bad. But thats me guessing.

    Nice project. How much horse power do you think you have with this setup? I’m wondering how much horsepower the stock engine would support. I know you upgraded the rods since those are the weakest link in the 603 engine. I have 62,000 miles on a rebuilt engine in my S350. It is all stock, but does have the #22 head. I saw a video by Luke from DPUK where he tuned a stock 603 with 6mm elements that did. quite well.

      My estimate , pump tuned to 130cc right now (capable of 180cc on the adjuster if i remember correct) and the holset wastegate is tuned to 1,7 bars as it is now .. so maybe 200-250 horses? Google knows this better than me so give it a shot.

      @@Foffe2000 dieselmeken is building me a injector for my 603 and they estimated 270hp for my 7.5mm elements set at 90cc. They say with the Alda it's adjustable all the way up to 160cc

    How much rpm do you need for full boost of the HX40? I'm thinking of going with the HX35 as I'm driving my '91 Benz daily... Great videos and channel btw! Marlon

      its a bit sluggish on the spoolup , you can choose different exhaust sizes (beside the compressor-size witch in this case is a HX40) but i am still a bit on the lean side when it comes to fueling , more fuel makes for hotter exhaust-gases that drives the turbo. So i might try to give it a little bit more fuel if the (pump isnt bottomed out yet) There is newer videos than this one where i make pulls where you can hear the reving of the engine, and hopefully get and idea on the power it makes and how the spool-up is.
      Look for some video on a manual transmission swap "ZF-swap" video i made on this car i think it was one or two years ago, should be on my channel here somewhere ..

      you are thinking about the dump-sound? i only got holset wastegate on this system, the actuator is directly on the pressure-side of the turbo, The sound is more like it would be with a blow-off valve on the pressure side of the system but i guess it sounds like this on the wastegate to (espessially without a exhaust-system)

      Hello, i actually prefer these older cars. And as you can se its very rough around the edges and therefore i dont have to take care of it as well as if i would build on a nice W124 chassie.

      I dont really get the question, but yeah its possible? if its a diesel its pretty straight forward, if its a gasoline you ned to consider ring gap on the pistons and the compression-rate on the stroke, and you need a good engine management system thats built to handle engines with turbo.

      I dont know, your guess is as good as mine. Got almost 2 bars of boost and a 7,5mm dieselmeken pump. What i do know is that i cant get it to the ground as it is now, i dont even get the turbo to spool upp efficently because the gearbox slips and i got high revs and no torque-load on the engine, then the turbo dont spool up as it could (like if you rev the engine on a standstill you want make much if any boost but if you floor it on asphalt and get good grip it spools up fast)

      Almost, if you look at some of my olders videos you will see what i exchanged on the engine, It got new (stock) pistonrings , crank and block bearings and some aftermarket H-profile rods. The block allready had the extra squirters to cool down the upper rod-bearings.

      Turbo ca 6 tkr , dieselmekenpump ca 11 tkr , intercoolern hade jag på hyllan sen gammalt så den vet jag inte priset på. Motorn har även kostats på nya H-profil stakar vilket inte är ett måste direkt. Dom landade på ca 8 tkr. Sen är det säkert 10tkr till på diverse smågrejjor här å där under byggets gång.

      Hello Hameed, if your engine is a stock turbo you are allready better of than me since i started with N/A. I would recomend you to start looking into intercooling the air even before changing out the turbo. Maybe you or some owner before you have uped the turbopressure a bit by alterning the wastegate, and if so its time to look into the cooling of charged air. If intercooling doesent make the car go any better, at least you have just done one of the steps you would have to do anyhow if you want to get a bigger turbo.

      @@Foffe2000 another question how can I make my stock fuel pump push more fuel and can I add a second battery to the car by just wiring it to the stock battery wires will it cause any problems or anything because I have had issues with it starting a lot

      @@hameedsrt9095 You can gain a little bit of power from the stock injection pump by adjusting up the rack-travel of the injection pump. There is a cover on the back side of the pump and under it its the lower left bolt to adjust counter clockwise for greater rack travel, you will have to lower the idle rpm accordently. But its no big gain in power on a stock injection pump, i would recomend just getting another second hand pump and let a diesel work shop check it over and tune it in for you.
      Two batteries are no problem and common on some more luxurius cars, you wire plus to plus and minus to minus and there you go

      @@hameedsrt9095 Intake is original N/A , plenum home made. The 2.5 (om602) and 3.0 (om603) are the same engine but different numbers of cylinders. There are a video where i mount a newly refurbished injection pump, but dont got any where i adjust the rack-travel no.

      i dissagree! you can talk back and forth all day about how the dragster-car who run the quarter mile do smoke at the same time as they make alot of power. But heres my take on it. For street use (even hotroding and making crazy power) that black smoke is an indication on that your air to fuel mixture is wrong and that you are causing great thermic stress on the engine parts (the engine gets super hot) while doing so. On a Gasonline car you should be around 14:1 air fuel mixture, a diesel engine runs good at the same ratio. But where the gasoline car is a bit safer on the fat side of 14:1 you are destroying the engine on a diesel by doing so (and make alot of black smoke). And that is what i think people get wrong about black smoking diesels .. its not as with gasoline cars a good thing. You can run a Diesel car as lean as 60:1 air to fuel mixture (!!) so from 60:1 - 14:1 ratio is okey and the engine holds up. But as i said in the begingin .. if you run a truck at the quarter-mile you rather want to be fat side (to win the race) than on the lean side, Never mind the 1300F EGT you are causing the engine since its over in the quarter mile and then the engine can cool down for the next lap. Jeff Hartman talks about "hotroding" diesels in his "Turbocharging Performance Handbook" wich i can recomend since its alot of great info there about things like above.

      @@Foffe2000 i know the basics, just saying that with stock injection pump (5.5mm elements) would get you 150hp max. Even with 2 bar. 6mm elements could get you somewhere between 250-300hp. I have built a om602 with 6mm pump and it pulls like a train with Variable geometry and 1.7 bar on 900kg car. Turning up the boost without fuel will not make more power. Besides my respect against your fabrication skills, can you answer my question - what elements are in your pump?

      Hey Oskar, This isnt a "kit" just the turbo is bought and intake and exhaust manifolds, intercooler etc ive made myself. And the OM606 and OM603 shares the same bottom end (with some small differences/upgraders) but the heads on each engine are different so if you get a 603 kit it wont fit your 606 engine.

      @@oscarbrsting954 Mercedes are very organisted when it comes to their labeling (chassie models engine models etc) the OM603 is the six cylinder diesel engine with 2 valves per cylinder, The OM606 is a modern version of the old engine where they went with same bottom end but 4 valves per cylinder instead. The last one is the more desirable version.

      @@oscarbrsting954 i am not sure here, but the OM606 NA (naturaly aspirated meaning no turbo) came in the W124 from about -93 to -95 and the OM606 turbo came in the W210 chassie -96 to -98. I would recomend to just google it so you will get the right information.

      Det är en icke turbo som turligt nog redan var utrustad med oljesprutade/oljekylda vevstakar såsom turbon hade. Och vevstakarna har bytts mot H-profil. Finns i tidigiare videor hur motorn plockas isär och renoveras.

    Haha this is crazy cool! In the Netherlands where i live you couldn't be street legal with an exhaustpipe sticking trough the hood. They would be moaning about sharp metall that could potential hurt pedestrians. May i ask in which county in Zweden you live? Because you said something about snow in september. Must be up north then. Lately i'm looking a bit on hemnet for maybe a fritidsboende or a cheap villa med ladugård in Värmland or Dalarnas län. But as i can't speak Swedish (only a few words but sometimes it looks a lot like dutch) it would be hard buying something there as i can't really read a contract at the mäklaren. They could sell me their old grandma instead of the house haha!
    I've got an old project '81 300GD and i really like to drive that trough Sweden one Day.

      Well its not legal to have a hood-pipe in sweden (on a veichle registered as a car) either, but as you might see there are very few cars out and it can be months between the times you se a cop-car, never the less its just test-drives and i wont be using that setup if i plan to use the car as a daily driver. Good luck landing a house in sweden, i would say that all swedes younger than 80 can speak somewhat english and you can probebly ask easaly get a real estate agent that speaks fluent english no problem

      Hej Kent, Jag har inga planer på att sälja den utan det blir fortsatt byggande på den under våren 2021. Men liknande W116 (i bättre skick) dyker upp på blocket lite då och då, så bara att sätta in en bevakning där.

      it is a Holset HX40 with internal wastegate

      Why? the black smoke just indicates wrong air to fuel ratio. This ones run on 7,5mm Dieselmeken pump that is good for at least 350hp wich i sure dont run now. So i rather run to rich right now rather than to lean but hopefully the outside alda keep it on a safe level

      ställ inte på det max bara. provade köra så typ 3 månader, den växlade nå förjävulskt snabbt och hårt men tillslut så gick något sönder i lådan hehe.

      @@MyBlablablablablabl Jag saknar helt vakuum-styrning på denna låda, det enda som finns kvar är länkaget för att den skall känna av gaspedalens läge (kickdown stag) Allt annat är bortplockat. Och den växlade ganska hårt vid original motoreffekt så jag tror inte det är något mer att göra nått åt. Och jag har redan två nyare lådor och eftermarknads-styrning till dessa. Då får jag även femväxlad automat så det blir nog det jag siktar på nästkommande sommar.

      @@Foffe2000 det är bara 1 vakuum slang till modulatorn. du kan ju också dra en laddtrycks slang dit bara så blir det mera tryck. men ska du byta låda så spelar det väll endå ingen roll. min slirade ingenting efter 47000 mil med bra växlingar.
