Mercedes Om 603 Turbodiesel

  • One of the pinnacles of Mercedes Diesel engines was built in the 80's&90's.
    In this case we'e talking about the sucessor of the OM 617.95 - The OM603 Turbodiesel straight 6 cylinder engine.
    I assembled this engine almost 5 years ago, it came from a wagon which was too bad to restore.
    The engine was torn apart until the last nut&bolt, measured , machined and reassembled with new parts.
    The "idea" behind this engine was finding a proper station wagon with a bad engine and do the swap. Never came across a decent one so now its up for sale.
    The full list:
    New Pistons&rings
    New bearings all around
    New gasket set from ELRING
    20 casting cylinder head(the ones that don't crack)
    Complete head job(skimmed, valves lapped, new seals)
    New timing chain with guides, new chain tensioner
    New oil pump sprocket&chain
    New core plugs
    New turbo
    New injection pump
    Alternator overhauled
    Vacuum pump rebuilt
    Tandem pump overhauled(not sure if it works properly though).

    This a great channel, was thinking of buying a 190D or a W124 but from what i see from your videos I'm rethinking. When I have enough money we will see...

      don't let me scare you. These are great cars. BUT with age and improper maintenance what could be a joy in your life becomes a nightmare. Take extra care when you buy. Take someone with you, preferably. Don't let these eye openers turn you off

    I really like your channel. Can you please make a video at some point, where you give information of how/ why you emmigrated to Portugal? Your passion for cars and maybe how you made your money?     Will rev to 4.5k rpm? My guy… they rev until 6k! Have one in my driftmissle and they are pretty happy up top like the 605 & 606’s as long as cooling isn’t an issue ofc 🤙🏽

    Hey, really like your channel. I’m about to buy a w124 estate with om603 non turbo. Can you tell me as iv never owned one, are they good to drive as a daily power wise? Or are they horribly slow? I’m not expecting a rocket but want it to be able to pull around fine with modern traffic. Any help much appreciated

    What a piece of art! congratulation! I think the 603 is just as good as the later engines. Recently learned that OM605/606 heads could also develop issues due to heat as i know one with bad compression on the rearmost cylinders when the engine is cold due to valve elongation and seat recession which the hydraulic lifters can't compensate for anymore. What do you think of the naturally aspirated 603? I'd like to buy a W124 again and this engine is on top of my list. Cheers.

      Thank you! The only thing that is not good on the 603 is in fact the cooling system coupled with high intake temperatures from not having an intercooler. Apart from that sturdy as they come. And all problems are avoidable if you drive sensibly. Yes the 605/606 also suffer from cracked heads, but percentage wise way lower that the 603. I They were an huge upgrade over these 603 longevity wise. The naturally aspirated 603 is bullet proof and have a lot less to go wrong with. What's not there can't fail:) They are sluggish of course but from a reliability standpoint the best you can get.

    Es gibt jede menge gut erhaltene W124 hier in Kalifornien die teilweisse noch einiger massen erschwinglich verkauft werden...have you ever considered importing a wagon from the West Coast?

      Ja die gibt es aber alle Ami Importe die ich hier zu Gesicht bekommen habe sind total "verbrannt". Rostfrei ja aber schön ist etwas anderes. Es gibt hier einige kleine shops die so etwas importieren, auch Ami Exoten. Jedem das seine:) ich stehe eher auf eu Fahrzeuge , Spanien, Portugal etc. Die sind von der Substanz wirklich gut und es gibt wenn man sucht auch wirklich schöne Fahrzeuge
