  • In this video we take a ride on my 2000 Road King Classic and talk about touring on this or any older bike. I am considering taking my Road King touring in the next week and wonder if it is a great idea since I have a newer motorcycle. Highway touring or back roads better on an older motorcycle or Road King. Let's talk Touring on a Road King - Good or Bad Idea

Hell, go for it. Your first reaction to a plan is usually the right one. Your buddies want to see the King, they’ve seen all the 24 RGs on CZcams that they care to. Personally, I’d throw a window on the forks, a net cord in the saddlebag and haul ass.

If your having reservations. Mount your windshield. Enjoy. I love riding the back roads. Interstate travel sucks. Unless your truckin. But on your bike, live a little.

Ive road the Pacific coast highway (650ish) miles 6 times in my life. Last time was on my 03 roadking. I enjoyed it more than doing the ride on my 22RG. Just something about them older roadkings. The sounds. the smells. its awesome

I rode an 883 Sporty all OVER this country in the 80s a d early 90s. My 1998 Road King had 155k on it when i foolishly got rid of it. My 2007 Road King just crossed 60k miles. In between i put 35k miles on a 2017 M8 Limited when my wife wanted to ride with me for a few years. When she quit, i had zero issues going back to the 2007 RK. Full size touring frame, easy to ride all day, days on end. I run 16 inch bars and Rhinehart's and no windshield... it's a fantastic touring machine without all the added doo dads that i personally didn't care for on the tip of the line M8 Limited. #1 bike in the world for touring...serious, this is true... it's a Honda Cub 125. People travel the entire globe on those things... if it moves ya and moves your soul...it's perfect.

It is the same bike. It's just that the Road-Glide has a fairing. Honestly, for an overnight trip, Road King is perfect. For a few nights or longer, I use my Electra-Glide Ultra Classic (with matching trailer)
Tip: Quick release windscreen, if winfld buffeting might be an issue for a frail old man like yourself
    Happy trails, Cowpoke

Do it on the King only suggestion would be to throw the windshield back on to the bike for longer trips. My windshield has the bag attached to it so it gives you some extra storage for some of the smaller items which comes in handy for the longer trips.

I rode coast to coast TWICE on my Road King in 2012 & 2013, my King was a 2007 model and I did the trip 2 up.
    First trip was Tampa-Nashville-Chicago- Route 66-LA ...
Flew home, back 6 months later for second trip
    Second Trip: LA-Vegas-Zion-Bryce-Monument Valley-4 Corners-Million Dollar Hwy-Pikes Peak-Amerillo-Memphis-Nashville-Tail of the Dragon-Tampa
Both trips NO interstate...NO GPS..NO Phone directions...yes we got lost a few times but it was a blast

I loved my 2005 Road King Classic. It wasn’t quick as a bunny, but definitely cool as a cucumber. That big ole’ headlight was awesome. I had fishtail exhaust tips that bought out that nostalgic look. I wish I didn’t trade that bike in, it was definitely my favorite of all my Harley’s. Take the King! 😊

Also numerous rides back to Iowa from Va. so yes it’s more than capable so when you say it’s not a true touring bike you my friend are wrong!!! Oh and I forgot trips down to Mississippi as well so you must not ride long distances.

My 2007 Road King was a great Touring Bike until a little old lady turned left in front of me and killed my beautiful King and damaged me pretty good too. However I personally would have taken that bike anywhere, coast to coast, north to south. Even with the windshield, I was pretty tired at the end of a day. If I were in your shoes and wanted to take the King, I would do it on a trip that I wasn’t worried about keeping up with the boys. You have a choice and my choice would be the 24 in this situation. Just my thoughts and opinion.

Its not a big deal. I have a 2005 Road King, TC 88 with a 6 speed box (thank god). I rode it out to sturgis and back 2 summers ago and did all the rides people talk about. Rode into wyoming and montana. last summer i rode it out to and all around colorado and back from ohio. I must admit that on the interstate I have to run wide open all day long to keep up with my buddies who have much newer milwaukee 8s so the lack of power can be frustrating, i guess. And I have a stock saddle which is pretty brutal. I use one of those air cushions. and yes, of course, the stock suspension is terrible. But my bike has held up, and it is a rebuilt, salvage title road king. The only problem I had on those trips was a snapped return throttle cable. I work hard at keeping my bike maintained, especially before trips. I go over everything. You are gonna put a windscreen on it, though, right? That'd be a deal breaker for me. Ive gotta have that windscreen for those long miles. Now, having said all of this....man...if i had a new road glide in my garage, or my personal fave, an ultra limited, I doubt im taking the king on any more long trips. Im 56. im gonna take comfort where I can find it

I had a 2000 Road King Classic, too. Loved that bike, and toured all over the U.S. on it. Spun up 75,000 miles before giving it to my nephew, who still rides it. The only problem was that the TC 88, and I punched mine out to 95, wasn't powerful enough for back-to-back, all day, high-speed cruising out West. Interstate speed limits are 75 to 85 miles an hour in many places, and I was beating the heck out of the engine keeping up with guys with newer touring bikes. But other than that type of touring, my 2000 Road King Classic was a beautiful and fun bike to ride.
