Had a next door neighbor with brown hair for a few years who moved away. A few years later, he showed up with his son, asking if they could fish in my pond. He said, "Don't you recognize me?". I didn't, until he told me his name, because he didn't have brown hair any longer. He had red hair. Turns out unbeknownst to me, when he lived next door, he dyed his hair brown, so he wouldn't get bullied for being a redhead! Apparently, in the years after he moved, the vanity & insecurity of youth grew out of him, & he didn't bother to dye it anymore. I can imagine him coming home from kindergarten, crying, from being picked on for having red hair, & his mom solving the issue by dying his hair, & he continuing to dye it into adulthood.
Red hair is probably more difficult for a boy to grow up with, than it is for a girl.

An army surgeon told me, that he didn't like operating on redheads, because they bleed a lot more than "normal" people (Also, he found no evidence, that they had souls, even when he cut them open & looked!). ...Just kidding about the souless part, but he did say; despite not being reflected in medical literature, from his experience, redheads bled significantly more during surgery.

Rusty Staub was a beloved baseball player of the 1960s-80s, known during his time playing for Montreal as Le Grande Orange. He was also greatly beloved by teammates and fans when he played for the NY Mets for several years. He is remembered as the sort of player who chatted with fans and signed autographs, and while he was a star-quality player eventually elected to the Hall Of Fame, he was always willing to play whatever position and strategy was asked of him - no ego-based objections. If they needed him to intentionally allow himself to be out for strategic reasons, he went up to bat and hit the ball exactly where asked to and, predictably, was out - this is known in baseball as a sacrifice, it's a common tactic but many star players are unwilling to do this, thinking it harms their reputation or is somehow "below" them. Instead they'll try to hit "normally" and harm the team because the better strategy at the moment... you get the idea. He took pride in executing a sacrifice successfully, as he took pride in every aspect of the game.
He left the Mets and returned, and found that his uniform had been re-assigned. So he wore a different number the second time with the team. Stars of his standing don't need to do that, they can get their number back. They are known as much by their number as their name. A great honor upon retirement, is to retire the number - never give it out to another player, forever. Rusty wasn't bothered, it was a triviality. He just needed his uniform to fit right so it didn't impede his play - all the rest was detail.
It was generally assumed that Rusty was gay. This was when athletes couldn't say so out loud, but he gave every ambiguous signal possible and he teammates had to know. He very quietly "represented" and none of his home-team fans cared, they just loved him as a player and as a person. He wasn't a "Jackie Robinson level" trailblazer, but he did more than his bit in the day.
The name nobody wants? In some circles it's a name nobody can have: it's Retired.

There's a French stage play that was adopted into a movie, and later the Germans made their own adaptation. It's about a group of friends who gather for a dinner party, and one of them "secretly" tells the rest that his girlfriend and him are having a baby and that he was thinking of calling the child Adolf, which causes outrage. The thing is that despite Adolf Hitler being such a controversial figure in Germany, you can still legally name your son Adolf. There's only one catch: you have explain your reasoning, and if the officials don't like it, they'll refuse your application.
Anyway, the play\ movie is called 'Le Prénom' in French, 'Der Vorname' in German, and 'How about Adolf?' in English.

As an ex-redhead, now grey, I can not say that I was ever bullied about it. However, my best friend always comments that the hair on my arms is decidedly ginger. He is not bullying, just fascinated that my arm hair shows no sign of greying. My cousin's granddaughter had the most amazing Titian-red hair throughout her childhood, but it darked as she grew up. It seems that a lot of red-heads experience this, so having the name Rusty when your hair has turned brown would be odd.

"Rusty" happens to be the nick-name of the protagonist (who was indeed a red-head) in the novel "A Place Called Home" by Michelle Magorian.
It is what she was called by her foster family in the US after she had been sent there by her mother from the UK during the WWII.
And in the end, she seemed to be more comfortable with her nick-name than with her real name: Virginia.
But it wasn’t easy for her when she returned to the UK after the war ended and everybody expected her to fit in and not even keep her nick-name...

Nicknames are great IMHO. Back when I was a kid anyone with a surname pronounced as ROADS was Dusty and younger brother was Rocky. Redheads were Rusty, Red, Copper Top, Carrot Top. Nicknames were not always welcomed but once a kid took ownership of it any sting was gone.

  • @ormondomaha
    @ormondomaha Před 3 měsíci +1

This video is way more relevant for the UK than it is for the USA. At least in older generations in the USA, neither Rusty nor Ginger as nicknames are associated with red hair as much as they are in Britain. I am 72 years old; I was an adult before I realized that some men called Rusty got that as a nickname from hair color. Most men I knew called Rusty were Russell on their birth certificate, and I think many Americans still primarily think of Rusty as a pet form of Russell rather than as an indication of hair color. (Note the character Rusty Griswold in the "National Lampoon Vacation" movies is officially a Russell.) The same with Ginger -- my 1987 Random House unabridged dictionary actually says Ginger as a female name is "a form of Virginia or Regina" and does not give "redhead" as one of the definitions of the word "ginger." Calling redheads "gingers" is a Britishism which has only become commonly used in the USA within the last few decades. The famous American actress Ginger Rogers was indeed "Virginia" on her birth certificate and was not a redhead but a blonde. Americans with red hair usually just get "Red" as their nickname if they get one from their hair color. So I do not think the decrease in people called Rusty or Ginger has much to do with prejudice against redheads on the western side of the Atlantic.

My dad had auburn hair, which I forgot about until seeing an old photo. That may explain why my third daughter had white-blond hair as a toddler; it’s brown now. My fourth girl was born with red hair but it changed to light brown quickly. My brother & I both have brown hair. He married a red-head & both their girls have red hair.
    I’ve known a red-haired Russell but no Rusty’s.

My paternal grandpa had red hair (his given name was Raymond, but Red was his nickname). My dad is blonde & my mom is brunette; my brother is still blonde, but my blonde hair has developed a red tint in the past 10-15 years. Even though my dad & brother are only carriers of the red hair gene, they both have traits that usually accompany red hair: mouth problems & sensitivity to sun.

I do have to poke a hole in your assertion that other hair colours don’t get names, I’m afraid. For instance, the name attributed to multiple cultures of Bruna means “brown”, Ciarán from Irish Gaelic means “dark haired”, the Roman Flavian means “yellow haired” (of course not in common use, but the above two are), and on it goes.

When I was in high school we had a red-haired Boykin Spaniel (the whole breed has the same color, auburn curly coats, I always say ours looked like Ralph from the Muppets). His name was Rusty.
We were working on something on the farm this one day, and this man walked up towards us and our hyperactive little dog started barking amd running over to him. We started calling Rusty back. The man said, "I assume you are talking to the dog. My name is Rusty, too." 😂

Rusty can be short for Russell or something similar. The late radio host Rush Limbaugh (III) went by Rusty as a kid.
Sometimes those with extremely light or dark hair get called Whitey or Blackie. E.g., the baseball pitcher Whitey Ford. Blond(e)s might be Goldie. Brown hair is too common to notice, but some get the nickname Brownie for other reasons. Tupperware saleswoman Brownie Wise was using the name she was given at birth, though.

I’ve read that the late KISS drummer Eric Carr (born Paul Caravello) had wanted to have the stage name Rusty Blade, but was nixed by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. The name was utilized later by Carr as an alias when checking into hotels when KISS was on tour.

On M-G-M Records catalog number 10061 Sam Nichols plays on side A "Red Hair And Green Eyes" with the B side "Ain't That Too Bad" from 1947 and it's pretty good and I believe it's related to the feelings of women who are "Rusty"/Red heads!! Also Blondes have Blondie and a song stemming from the French/Creole "(Our Own)Jole Blon" by Roy Acuff on Columbia Records catalog number 37287 with the B side being "Tennessee Central(Number 9)"… which if you are unaware, I have in my possession!! 😮😮😁😁
Edit: as far as my own name, Jeremiah Scott Norris… my father says he named me after "Jeremiah Johnson", my mother on the other hand said I was named after Jeremiah(The Weeping Prophet) from the Bible… Norris, I'm not sure where the surname came from, but my grandfather from my father's side of my family is from Augusta Georgia… and I never asked about my middle name… maybe I'll ask later?? 🤔🤔

At least in my experience in the US (mostly in the south) the name Rusty (which was almost always a nickname for Russell) wasn't really associated with red hair, but did tend to be associated with the more working class communities. Then again, so was the name Russell itself, thought that might have a been a thing in my area, and I think in other places, Russell is considered a fairly posh name. Eitehr was seen as kind of old-fashioned, though. (i.e., if you just said the name "Rusty" people were likely to think of an older (60-ish) working class man.)

People not wanting to be called “Rusty” might be more of a European thing, cause I feel like I've heard of a lotta Rustys here in the U.S. Which I guess is a culture difference I can understand… I know my college art history teacher taught us about how for a lot of European history, when someone was born with a disliked trait like red hair, a disability, a deformity, “weird behavior” , etc., their family tended to claim they weren't actually their child but in fact a changeling who was swapped out for their real child who was stolen away to fairyland, and used that as an excuse to even straight-up kill them without consequence; how it was literally to the point that it was a *win* when nobility & royalty started *keeping people labeled “changelings” as pets* (google the painting “Las Meninas,” where you can see two women with dwarfism who were victims of this practice), because at least they were surviving past childhood. And I know that, at least here in the U.S. & especially in the neurodivergent community, I've also seen a lot of people choosing to try and reclaim the changeling label- use it as a way to say “yeah, I'm weird/disabled/ugly/some combination thereof, and I'm effing proud of it. These people y'all labeled ‘changelings’ are *my* people and I'm *quite* happy to claim them as such.”

You actually can be named for being blond.
"Blondie" is perhaps more of a nickname, but there was that one comic character from the eponymous comic strip. Idunno if there are real people named Blondie.
Also there is Finn, a Celtic name that means blond. Presumable why the protagonist of Adventure Time was named that, he had blond hair under his silly little cap.
