Genius - sliding out grate and ash pan for the hot coal dump! Excellent technique Sir! We just got our LSG 20 x 36 offset this past Friday. We'll be firing it up for seasoning and the first cook this week. Can't wait! We're subscribed now - great channel!
Thank you so much.. and welcome to the LSG family! Burn that sucker in and let’s see some cooks. You are gonna love it. I appreciate you checking out my channel and thanks for the sub!
@@GrumpusOnFire The least we could do. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your methods!
Yeah....cleaning these monsters can be an event (before the event).
I deep clean mine a day or two after each cook and respray with canola oil....I always allow two hours for my process.
Enjoyed your video as always Grumpus...Every time I roll smoke on my LSG I think of you and all the other CZcamsrs who helped me make the decision to purchase one of these fantastic pieces of cooking equipment.
Thanks for watching John. I’m happy to know I somehow made your decision a little easier.
Thanks for the video. My LSG vertical offset should be arriving by months end, so I appreciate the how do guide. You and a few other CZcamsrs have made this long wait bearable.
Welcome to the LSG family Eric! I remember that seemingly unbearable wait. But you should be getting “the Call” anytime now. I hope I have been a good diversion while you wait… Keep us updated.
Very helpful! Mine was just delivered today and I was able to complete the initial burn in process and got it seasoned
Fantastic JD! Welcome to the LG family! I hope my videos helped get you jump started with your new smoker. Owned mine for four years now and still get excited every time I fire it up!
@@GrumpusOnFire I’m loving it! Smoked 4 Turkeys on it this past Thanksgiving 😂
@@DevotedtoTruth That is awesome JD. Happy Holidays to you and your family!
About those grates. I started using a “grill badger” on my Yoder. Love it. It’s perfect for the expanded medal and the older they are the better. The grease they collect helps coat the grates with a layer of grease as you clean.
I’ve seen those Rick. I remember now… those folks were going to send me one to check out quite awhile back. I forgot about them… guess they forgot me too! Thanks for watching Rick.
@@GrumpusOnFire you can get similar in any restaurant supply. Cheaper.
Awesome video Grumpus. Loved it. Hope all is well and good seeing you my friend.
Thanks J.P. It’s good seeing your hard work with your channel paying off. Thanks for stopping by J.P.
Man you gotta make more videos if you can. Great work sir.
I’m trying to get my butt in gear Adam. Thanks for your encouragement!
Cream in coffee...? come on Grumpus... Great start up routine Grumpus. Although you made it look easy in a 13 minute video folks won't truly appreciate it until they try it themselves. Take care Grumpus!
Yo Johnny! Now that’s funny! At my age, if I want coffee in the morning, my tummy requires a bit of cream. 😉 If I made start up look easy… mission accomplished! 😁
Great how to, Grumpus.
Thanks Kory!
Waiting impatiently for my new LSG. This is the best video I have seen on fire management and getting the smoker up to temp!
Welcome to the LSG family! Exciting times for sure, William. I remember that wait… seemed like forever. I nearly drove the wife nuts! I posted a video a couple of years back on fire management, where I detail in depth on managing the long fires for low and slow cooks. Check it out while you wait for your new smoker… czcams.com/video/cPmz2c_cSsc/video.html . Thanks for your comment, and thanks for watching. Cheers… 🍻
Perfect demonstration Grumpus! Love that starting up process! Thanks for the video, loved it! cheers Grumpus
Thank you Marky! Cheers buddy! 🍻🍻🍻
Well done Grumpus ! You may need to move to a nicer neighborhood or do I need to come back down for a visit and talk to that neighbor? Your process looks as good as your pit ! Great job my friend!
Thanks Kent. Definitely yes! Your size and stature would be a tremendous help when having the “talk” with my neighbors. I’ll just stand behind you… and make faces! 😂😂😂
I clean in a similar way. The only difference is that I dip my wire brush in soapy water. After that I rinse with water to remove the soap. Like you, my firebox grate is rusted but smoking chamber grates look new!
Just got a LSG basket and using it for the first time on a brisket cook today!
Thanks for the video!👍
Hey Berry. I love that basket. I wish I had gotten it sooner… maybe I wouldn’t have blistered my paint so bad. I seldom use the grate in the fire box, maybe for searing a steak once in a while. Thanks for watching.
I wish they had one that was about 16 1/2 inches. I wish they offered an in-between size. 12 is a tad small and 19 is just a wee much.
Hey Daniel! Thanks for stopping buy to check out my channel. LSG started as a custom fabrication shop. You’ve got nothing to loose if you give Chris a call. Maybe on his next run of baskets he can chop one down to the size you need. Thanks for watching…
Good vibes on a Friday. Feels like I need to do a comp session with my ole hickory pit
If the sun’s a shining… it’s time…!
Hey Grump.
So glad to see ya. Thanks for taking the time to make this.
Would you consider making a up to date video on how the LGS is maintaining? Pro’s and con’s?
Agreed. Looks like some of the paint is a little worse for wear on the fire box. Be nice to see how it's doing overall.
Hey Travis! You are welcome, and thanks for watching and commenting. Yeah… I’ve abused my fire box quite a bit. The rest of the pit is still holding up nicely. I’m planning on doing a three-year review of my smoker, sometime in May, I think. Stay tuned!
This was a great video Grumpus especially for someone like me that has absolutely no idea!!!! Wonderful stuff my friend I hope that you have a great weekend!!!
Thanks. You too Patrick! Once you get a routine down for your pit, it really is easy.
Hey Grumpus
Finally had the money saved up and got mine ordered in Jan and should be here and of May timeframe. I can't wait to get it. Now I need to get serious about finding lots of wood. Take care.
Congratulations Dave! Welcome to the LSG family. Ten more weeks is going to seem like forever 😄… but the wait is worth it! Yup, get your wood now so it can be drying. Be sure to keep us all updated when you fire that baby up!
1:25 - Is nothing sacred anymore?
Excellent video Grumpus! 👍
LMAO Everett! I’m such a shameless fan boy… ya got me! 😂😂😂 Thanks for checking out the video.
As usual great video
I appreciate that Anthony!
Enjoyed this one brother. Gotta love LSG!
Thanks for checking in Alton. Nearly three years and I still love that smoker! 😍
Fantastic video, I'm with ya on cleaning the grates. I've got a kettle that's outside all the time with a castiron grate that doesn't rust cause its well oiled from the last cook.
Hey, thanks for stopping by Lee! It doesn’t take much oil to keep the rust down, and, the high heat is going to kill any concerns from the last cook. See ya in the chats my friend… 🍻
Great explanation Grumpus and I love how you cleaned off the grates!! That is a beautiful LSG and one of these days I will have an offset from them!! Just built with quality in mind all the time!! Have a great weekend brother!!
Thanks Ricer. I’m still loving my LSG after all this time.
Good video to watch on a Friday!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it XaViEr!
Been missing your videos, thanks for sharing and I have a neighbor like yours lol.
Hahaha David. I was sure I got up early enough to get started in peace… but, nope… not today! 😬
Thanks for showing and explaining your process. 👍 It will help many with these larger Heavy Pits. Love that \🔥/ Basket! 👍
Metal On My Brother! \🔥/
Thanks Ken. Man, I love that basket!
I watched your fire start up again and was wondering where you got those long handled cleaning brushes, both wire and fiber ?
Carl
Hello Carl. The brushes shown in the video were purchased at Lowe’s.
Great instructions👍
Thanks Bobbi 👍!
Cool vid Grumpus, I’m getting one of these smokers one day. How long have you had yours? I’ve noticed you have quite a bit of rusting, are you planning to touch up the paint?
Micah, I’ve had my smoker almost three-years now. I plan on doing a three-year review in the next couple months. I’ll address the rust and repair process then. Thanks for watching…
Good stuff as usual. Noticed u have some paint coming off of the firebox. I’m guessing that’s normal bc of the heat? I suspect the heat compromised even the high heat paint on the LSG over
time. Will u touch it up? Worried about that at all?
Hey Elliot! I have abused my fire box a lot (no fault of LSG, but all me 😬). I’ve blistered the paint in places, but it is superficial... so, no, I'm not worried. I’ll do a pit review in May. You’ll see that the rest of the smoker (paint) is holding up nicely. I may even do a video of the repair process if there is any viewer interest. 🤔
@@GrumpusOnFire consider yourself having received interest. I’d love to see a repair video. That way I can be super smart when I finally have enough pennies saved up to get my own LSG.
Great information, thank you. 1 question though, how long did it take for the rust to appear? I know they all do it. Do you cover ? Just so on the fence about what Lonestargrillz I will purchase. So many awesome cooking machines I can't make up my mind.
Thank you.
Rick! I’ll have had my smoker three years, come May. I do not cover it. I’ve abused the fire box with some hellacious fires at times. So, it is showing some blistering and rust. The rest of the pit paint is holding up very well. I can’t put this on Lone Star, it’s all me! I plan to repair and repaint this summer… so stay tuned. I don’t think you will regret whatever Lone Star Grillz product you decide on…
@@GrumpusOnFire totally understand, I was up in north Idaho for 10 yrs . The bigger fires to fight the sometimes sub zero temps, and every now and then not covered after a long cook it was beat up a bit, but after the roll I've been searching for a few years and Chris looks like he knocked it out of the park. He's got 3 I'm really looking hard. Thank for sharing, making it harder to chose lol... have a good one sir and keep on chugging!
Why so much rust on your LSG... is the rust only on the fire box?
Nice video Grumpus,
FYI, just ordered the thermoworks pen that you had listed in your description from your link. I’m assuming it’s pretty good since you have it down there in your description. LOL
Thanks, and thanks, Deshawn! Which ever Thermapen you purchased… you won’t be sorry. These eliminate the guess work and will improve the quality of the food you serve. Thanks for using the link… every little bit helps. 👍
Where are you, Grumpus? It's been 5 months!
Great video and I love my LSG. I see some rust on your smoker and recommend some food grade Mineral Oil and water mixed in a spray to help prevent the rust. Spray canola oil on all of your grates and inside the smoker to prevent rust. Do you preheat your logs before putting them on the smoker?
Yup, Four Press. I’ve pushed my fires beyond what’s reasonable. My fire box is showing the results of that abuse. It’s all cosmetic, so no worries here. I do preheat my wood most of the time. I’ll set them off to the side, inside the box.
Great video, I’m sure this video will help many.....I noticed paint and rust on your pit do you keep it covered. I find it odd that Lonestargrillz pits has paint problems. I use 2to1 canola oil and water after every cook and no paint or rust issues....are you going to repaint?
Hello Robert. Yeah… I’ve beat up my fire box pretty good. Lone Star Grillz doesn’t have a paint problem… they’ve got a "Grumpus" problem 😂!!! I use my fire box for grilling… A LOT! I’ve had some pretty excessive fires in that baby. I also do not keep any cover on it. It’s all cosmetic at this point. But I will be addressing the repair soon.
@@GrumpusOnFire A wise decision....you don’t have a charcoal grill or a combo charcoal wood grill?
No sir. I have limited space in the backyard, so this is my only cooker (well, I gotta gasser😮). I have kind of made it my “thing” to see how many ways I can utilize my pit to emulate other types of cookers. I’ve done several videos where I cooked on this pit in ways it wasn’t intended. I have a lot of fun doing this, but it has taken its toll on the aesthetics of my fire box. But it’s all good… a little sandpaper here, a little paint there… this pit is still gonna out last me! 😂😂😂. I appreciate your comments and questions. Cheers Robert! 🍻🍻🍻
Great video. I am looking for a good cooking wood source anywhere around The Woodlands area. Where do you buy your wood at?
Hello Paul. I found a guy that works for an arborist/tree trimmer in my area of town. He has a side hustle, cutting and splitting hard woods salvaged from his day job. I just searched for firewood in the Woodlands area and found several suppliers around you. I would also approach any tree trimmers working in the Woodlands and ask what they do with the trimmings… you might get a lucky score on the spot! Just be prepared to season it yourself.
@@GrumpusOnFire Thanks!
Good to see your video, very good how to video, Are, you using water in the smoker on the cook?
No, Al. I’ve yet to pour water in the smoker. Disposing of the water after the cook will be a real PIA for me. For now, I’ll just stick to using a water pan when needed. Thanks for commenting.
Hey Grumpus! Great job on this video! What editing software do you use? Keep up the great work!
Hey, thanks Eric! At the moment, I use Premiere Pro (CS6) to edit my videos. I have years invested in this software, so it is difficult to relearn something new. I am in the process of converting to DaVinci Resolve with the hope of using it full time by summer. Resolve is powerful, professional and FREE. If you are looking to switch software, Resolve is an excellent choice. I am not affiliated with Black Magic. It’s just impressive software! www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/
@@GrumpusOnFire I really like FREE! I use Shotcut, and it’s also free but lacks the animations on text and stuff like that. Thanks for the advise!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
