- Well I did it guys. I played Suikoden IV. What a snoozefest. Thankfully I hear this is the lowest point of Suikoden so it's only up from here!!
" The fourth game in Konami's console-style role-playing series is a prequel rather than a sequel, set a century and a half before the events of the original 1996 PlayStation game. Players take the role of a young, would-be hero, who will come to carry an item called the Rune of Punishment. Like all runes, this one is powerful, but it is also very dangerous, for it damages its wielder when it's used. Like earlier Suikoden games, this fourth edition also involves gathering the "Stars of Destiny," which are 108 people from all walks of life who can be teamed together to accomplish great deeds.
As the game begins, the player's character is just finishing his training at a naval academy, and being prepared for his first real battles. Because this game plays out across a string of mysterious islands, sea combat can be a regular occurrence, so the hero's training should serve him well. Much of the adventure still involves exploring the game world's various land masses, however, engaging in small-party turn-based battles and coaxing clues from other characters. Though the game's artwork remains notably stylized, characters have a more realistic (less anime-inspired) look than those of earlier Suikoden titles."

Thank you all for being so supportive and understanding of my break. ^_^ I figured I'd come back strong! This video was finished I think December-ish. And was released early for Patrons! So perhaps consider joining to get early access or even join the discord! www.patreon.com/PelvicGaming
Quality videos are always worth the wait.
@@Lazrael32 I appreciate that. Thank you
Pelvic Gaming, please tell me your ethnicity. I’ve always wanted to know. Black/Spanish right???
You mentioned at the end that you won't be doing a Suikoden 5 review due to the game not being available on PSN. Is this just because of recording quality concerns with playing it on PS2?
@@Julford well yes and no. I just dont have a way of playing it and I don't care for emulation
I love how much effort you put into your videos, keep it up!
Agreed!
Lady Pelvic giving us that PRODUCTION 👏🏻 VALUE 👏🏻
"Snowe is as dead to me as the Suikoden series is to Konami."
And Metal Gear Solid. And Silent Hill. And Konami itself before long LOL
Silent Hill makes me sad
Silent Hill was, is and will be my favorite series of all time.
RIP.
At least MGS is getting another remake. Here's hoping they keep Kojima away from it before he Death Strandings all over it.
@@AngryCosmonaut Is there proof anywhere of this remake? All I've seen are rumors.
But konami is still milking out suikoden franchise thru pachinko. Its really running well for them
I totally feel you on the silent protagonist. Nowadays, when your game is fully voice acted, it feels like everyone is just talking past you.
Idk man FO4 proved that adding voices to silent protags doesn't always work, especially when said VA has poor voice direction.
Persona 5 also proved that you can have a silent protag that doesn't feel like idk why you said this but "people aren't talking past you."
@@sokumotanaka9271 my most recently example of this is from Dragon Quest 11. The entire game, it feels like you are the side character. Everyone else makes choices and decisions for you, like you are the only child at a table full of adults
@@sokumotanaka9271 because you have some dialogue choices. A lot of these silent protag games don’t even have that. People talk to you and it’s awkward silence then a response. And persona’s way of doing it is not great either. Would still be improved with voice acting.
@@SrGigglesandlaughs Yeah, as much as I love Persona and think they did an ok job with the choices they give you, I'd much rather have a voiced protagonist. But unfortunately I don't think silent protagonists are going to disappear anytime soon for the same reason almost every RPG protagonist is a child or a teen, which is, Japan can be very set in it's ways.
I really liked and laughed at the beach live action stuff. You're really putting an amazing effort!
This will always be one of my favourite games in the series regardless of what people say. Yeah it has some shortcomings but people overblow its flaws and forget about the things that it actually did right. Also it's highly recommended that you play Suikoden Tactics as well, even though it's in a different style, it adds a lot more to the story.
It has amazing atmoshpere from what I remember. And I play these games for the atmosphere
It was the last Suikoden game I played as a wide eyed teenager.
@@matinazadeh6870 I always found IV to be the most atmospheric... if not the only atmospheric in the series.
@@mr.tomasiorubinshtein the whole series is atmospheric, my personal favs are 1 and 4
Got to be honest I click these videos so quickly. Been loving your channel for years now!
The Coconut God has blessed this video! 🥥 (I lost it at the random battles, great work Pel)
The game that many people didn't realize you could speed up your ship in.
Dude! When I FINALLY discovered that shit 😤
I figured it out quite early in the game but still have complaints about the world map that feel like big empty world with high encounter rates
That's so crazy to me that so many people missed that. Lol.
Lol, I LOVE that transition to battle! That's absolutely what happens in the game like every 3 seconds.
This was an amazing video! Agreed about the high encounter rate, the game is decent but its crazy how frequent the battles are
I am CRACKING UP 😂😂 The combat scene had me in stitches. Gotta love when Lady Pelvic blesses us with great content! 💚
Your videos are great! I never played Suikoden IV, so it's good to hear another perspective!
I'm glad you're back, I missed your reviews, also I approve of the coconut.
Glad to see you're back Pelvic 👍🏾 Another quality review 👌🏿
I have Suikoden 1to 4 plus tactics but iv not played 4.
But now you have convinced me to play it. Thank you fir another great review. Your AMAZING.
Love the skits, great review as always too
Great review! The thing with Snowe is that his arc was supposed to be of a youth that got too many expectations of success imposed on him, but he had no skill, courage or heart to be the leader or hero everyone, including his father, expected. So he had a big jeliously case on his best friend, who had all those traits, and this jeliously made he commit all kinds of threaterous acts against him, which, if you allow him to live, he admits his own weakness and how much of a jerk he was.
But I agree with you it wasn't well executed, but I think it fits the good ending, since Lazlo being so merciful with him was the reason why the Rune of Punishment entered the "Forgivness phase", because finally the rune encountered someone who showed mercy while bearing the rune to so many people.
sweet intro! That random encounter bit was great lol
This is a great video!!! Well done
Subbed! Love the effort you put into this game I spent so much of my childhood playing
Thank you so much!!
I played this in college. Suikoden 2 was legendary in my high school. suikoden 3 looked so good, and the castle was incredible. 4 and 5 were both fun, but didn't reach the peaks of 2 & 3. great vid! really brought me back 👴
Truly enjoy the review, I remembered the random combat was too often too.
This is one of my favorite games of all time! Thanks for covering it!
I love the work you put into this game!!! I appreciate it a lot
you are one of the most creative and charming presences on youtubeeeee
Never played Suikoden but I want to because of this vid.
Go for it! The first four are available on PSN.
It's an amazing series, do it!
The first 2 are pretty fast paced RPGs as well. 15-25 hours each.
Yes! Please do!
Suikoden 1 is good and fun, but outdated
Suikoden 2 is one of the greatest RPGs of all time.
Suikoden 3 is a somewhat great but also flawed attempt to experiment with and subvert the series.
Suikoden 4 is...actually a really chill, charming, and understated game. Kinda feels like a return to 1 in aesthetics and design...but also the flawed mechanics and janky outdated design (as Lady Pelvic pointed out with the silent protagonist in an otherwise voice acted game.)
Suikoden 5 is aight, but it's ending and otherwise being a try-hard Suikoden 2 ripoff ruined it for me.
Great review! Love the location change.
Loved the video! Keep up the phenomenal work! =)
That intro was awesome, you'd make a good main character for an rpg. Great review.
first video ive seen from you and between the suikoden love and that hair ill be back for more
Loved the skits throughout, that ending XD
Top notch video. You’re going to love Suikoden V.
I lucked out in a weird way, in that this was my first Suikoden game and really enjoyed it since I didn't have any other reference to compare it to. Having since played 2 and 5 though, I'm not going back anytime soon.
Solid review, and +1 for the irl battle scene!
I really enjoyed your review lady pelvic
I would die for that coconut, best party member of 2021. Great video as always 👍🏾😁
Good job , thank you so much can’t wait to review suikoden 5
I actually freaking adore this game yet somehow cant disagree with pretty much any of your criticisms. 😊. It definitely had way more potential.
Also, the effort you put into this review is so impressive.
Hoping you get to do Suiko 5 soon! Thanks for covering this series!
Awesome video Lady, it was complete and I laughed my ass off a lot of time too ! Haha I also want Joey the coconut as friend too ! Looks like 2021 is starting great for the Pelvic community !
I went to Va Beach (shout out to Flipper Mc'Coys) to escape my hometown snow and I wake up to a new Lady Pelvic video and it's awesome as usual but enhanced. Thank you for going the extra mile. It's well appreciated. 👁️
The random battles bit was funny and charming. Especially love the posing.
Look at you coming back with a bang, welcome back!!! I loved this review and my god your production value here is soooo good, seriously your hard work shows and I loved the opening and encounter gag, so excited for the rest to come girl!! (Also hope Joey comes back we love us some Joey)
Pelvic the Beach part outdoors with your friends was nice 😊😋🎮
This was my favorite video of yours I laughed pretty hard
Great video!! Loved it. You do JRPGs justice 💖☺
I enjoyed this video so much, thank you pelvic🌸
I'm glad to hear it. Thank you! ♡
Great review!
Thanks for inspiring me to give suikuden a go
Snarky reviews sustain me and this was a feast. LOL. Thank you so much. This was delightful. All hail coconut Joey.
So many savage 1-liners in this review lmao. Excellent content.
I’m so happy to subscribe to you’re channel. 😂❤️
Welcome Back! I definitely don't miss high encounter rates.
I very much enjoyed the video! I definitely agree with all of your review. Played the game maybe 3 times now since I was little and the lack of character arcs/high encounter rate/endless sailing were annoying lol. Since we’re talking Suikoden though, this makes me super excited for the new spiritual successor to the game that’s in the works!!
Damn that sweet battle transition.
Holy shit this is my new favorite channel!
Yass queen giving us BIG BUDGET with that intro!!
This is fantastically made! It was nice to see an in-depth review instead of a "This game sucks." 4 was my first, and it got me into the series. Even though it's really rushed, it still has a place in my hear- *encounter theme plays, battle starts*
Thank you.
I pride myself in explaining my point of view. Even if people disagree. We don't have to like the same things!
@@PelvicGaming Hell yeah! That's what got me to subscribe! You state when you don't like something, and I really appreciate that when it comes to retrospective content like this! All your vids I've seen so far are fantastic, so keep at it!
The way you put this 1 together took me back to when I used to watch x-play..good shit! You mos def gonna do something big entertainment wise 1 day.
I can only look at this game with nostalgia from the better days when Konami was still a gaming company. Right now, I struggle to even define what Konami is tbh... Bad things aside, I kinda understand how people think this game is the worst mainline Suikoden in the bunch, but it was a very tall order to outdo the original and especially Suikoden II. Can't speak about Suikoden III or V because I never had the chance to play them.
To me, it was still a very good experience after two playthroughs. Yes, random encounters suck, but it was the norm back in the day. I didn't care much about it at the time but, right now, I can see myself rolling my eyes as well when it starts to get repetitive. It's a consequence of almost 20 years of innovation on this matter.
Congratulations on your video, it shows you've put a lot of effort into it! Love it! : )
Great job, funny as hell skits!
You did such an awesome job with this. The random battle sequence really got me good xD
I love that Pelvic had a max HP of 69 ;D
This is actually the first Suikoden game that I ever had, I haven't beaten it because I didn't know about Suikoden and had no idea what to do. I really do want to dive back into it sometime soon
Post credits scene was gold!
Welcome back sempai!
The high encounter rate was what turned me off to this game. I loved it though, besides that! Thanks for a great honest review! Much love! Also, having your friends help you with the live action recreations of the battles is hilarious and genius! Thank you!
Haha thank you! Appreciate you watching!!
The coconut is a party member?!love it.😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Me gustan mucho la forma en como presentas tus videos. La verdad éste tipo de juegos se me hacen muy lentos y me llegan a aburrir rápido. De cualquier manera, me encantó tu vídeo. ☺
Really appreciate you putting so much effort into reviewing these old JRPGs. You touch on every aspect worth mentioning about Suikoden IV - good and bad - so I'd say this is the definitive review of the game. Your cute girlfriend doesn't hurt either.
Welcome back!!
One of your best videos! I hope you find a way to play Suikoden V eventually. It has the best story of any Suikoden game, and really makes up for SIV.
I'll never play this, but awesome video!
Suikoden 4 was my third favorite due to ship battles. Great Video
This was great!! I really like his game. Actually one of my favorite. You did really well with the ridiculous encounter rate our at sea. I like the battle animation a lot.
Thank you so much!!
Welcome back!
I just started playing it on my old Sony Trinatron Thanks for the video and tell your pirate friends Thanks for being in the video they were really cute ☺️
Now I am hoping that you do a live action JRPG series, after this video. I am really feeling it, Lady.
"I named this coconut Joey cuz I'm lonely..."
Relatable.
Why does everyone hear Joey? I think the name is Jowy, as a nod to Suikoden 2.
@@armorvil she's saying Jowy, but Jowy of suikoden 2's name is pronounced as Joey, just like Pohl is pronounced as Paul, Mathiu is Matthew. It's the classic 90s Japanese video game spellings and mistranslations
Funnily enough, while 4 isn't my favorite Suikoden I liked it enough, where I regard it up there as great. (I just abhorred that naval traversing mechanic) oh...and Snowe.....the less said about him the better xD. Also that intro is a banger. Dope vid fellow RPG aficionado.
This is a strong comeback video! The random battles got me 😄 HP 69? Did the coconut change names? I loved it thanks Pelvic!
Welcome back 🙌
The rant alone about Snowe @ 4:15 earned you a sub as it echoed my thoughts when I played the game back in 2018 and posted of him on Gamefaqs:
So after 5 hours into the game, I felt compelled to post the following thoughts on Snowe (who I hoped would get killed off more than once during various cut scenes over the course of those 5 hours):
1. He gets easily boarded/taken by Commander Glen's ship* shortly after the starting ship-vs-ship battle (rebuked by Glen, but okay; he's still "in-training", so I'll give him a pass; however, this should have been a warning to all concerned that he wasn't quite ready to graduate [esp. into a captain's position]).
*No one in the crow's nest...?
2. He then freaks out in battle during the escort mission when he is attacked suddenly by pirates* and bails on his crew claiming a serious injury to his arm and is once again rebuked by Glen; yet, not striped of his rank, even at risking his subordinates lives and failing in his command. (Not only that, but how could you row a dinghy with a severely injured arm...???).
*Who is in the crow's nest...?!
3. Following being able to keep his rank as a captain from that, he once again as captain leads his ship solo after fleeing enemy vessels, disregardful of both the actions of his allies/peers and the concerns of his crew, again risking said crew unnecessarily, and also once again being reprimanded by Glen (and STILL keeping the rank of captain...)
So at this point, before the hero is exiled I am told that Snowe has been promoted now to Commander...No, I'm sorry; I'm done.
(And, yes; I know that he is the son of upper nobility which may have had to do with Glen allowing him to remain as a captain; however, enough is enough, esp. when there are not even scenes to reflect his father trying to convince Glen to allow him to remain in his position, leaving such to be left up to the player's assumption).
In my headcanon, the coconuts are Charl's siblings, who do twitch streams of obscure RPG's on Thursdays, and an irregularly scheduled Magic: The Gathering podcast every now and then.
I love your video!!
This was the first main title Suikoden game I played (in order to get all of the characters in Suikoden Tactics) so it introduced me to the series. I subsequently played Suikoden 5, 1, and then 2. Maybe because it's the first one I played, but I really enjoyed this game and have played through it multiple times back in the day. Now that I've played most of the series, I can see why this game is so poorly received by fans but I don't think it's nearly as bad as people say that it is.
Loved the pirate skit.
"He's dead to me like Suikoden is dead to Konami"
OOOOOOOOOOF
Love the effort here.,
Flying around the ship in skies of Arcadia getting lost having to fight all those random battles was equally annoying
AWESOME!!! I've been wondering if you were going to continue with the Suikoden series.I played this one when I was 11 but only got nearly less than an hour into it, so now I can see if I missed anything
PS Love the intro. You deserve so many more subs
I can't wait for you to review Suikoden 5. I think it's one of the best jrpg ever.
I Can't stop laughing. Freaking amazing review.. so much effort and love put into this
Hope that you will review Eiyuuden Chronicle when it comes out.
PS: I really agree that Suikoden 4 has so much potential, and despite the negative comments from other players, I do like the game a lot. And yes, I REALLY DON'T LIKE SNOWE either. The Rune of Punishment is probably my 2nd favorite rune next to Soul Eater too.
This brought back all of the good...and bad...memories of Suikoden 4. I wasn't a fan of the reduced party amount and overall bland characters. The biggest draw for me of the series are the wide array of character choices you have for your party! Suikoden 2 and 3 had some of the best, most memorable characters to date. I don't recall ANY from Suikoden 4 :(
Can't wait for the Suikoden V playthrough! Gonna be a super long one I think but it is my second fave after S2.
Haha whenever Konami decides to port it...
@@PelvicGaming Oh damn didn't realize it sells for over 200 dollars nowadays. I still have mine from way back when it first came out.
Loved the creative way you criticized the encounter rate. Good job!
It's interesting that you mention Snowe having no redemption arc. I felt the same way. I didn't really like him, but many people praise Konami for him being well written. Like... how? I sure as heck don't see it. In fact, it was IGN that praised him as a character. Um...
I liked some of the things that Suikoden IV tried to do, but sadly it was just a good idea with bad execution. If you go on to play Suikoden Tactics, the story of IV is continued there, and some of the problems are remedied (like how the characters recruited in Razril at the end are basically useless because they join too late in the game. In Tactics, those characters join first).
haha that intro ... thx for a great review
Keep it up girl, love your video, now on to Suikoden 5, 5 is so similar with 2, the best in the series.
I cannot decide which is better etween Suikoden 2 or 5, I wanna see from your perspective! 😀
THE QUEEN IS BACK!!!
This and tactics will always have a special place in my heart as they are what introduced me to the series.
The ship battles IMO is probably the best in the series for the army battle segments. I took this too seriously, building the most OP ship party members and rune cannoneers. The characters according to me were some of the most fleshed out if you've also played tactics (eg. Kika)
Unpopular opinion but the moment you get to recruit Jeane and have her be used in battle was icing on the cake for me. I love playing a beautiful and voluptuous magic user ready to blast her enemies away and still look effortlessly gorgeous!
Its finally here! And its fantastic, I like this game, of course it could be better, but the setting draws me in, The rune of Punishment is cool too, almost as much like the Soul Eater rune.
