1000 Views and I'll play Suikoden Tactics as everyone in the comments is saying it's quite good.
It's ok
Haven’t played Suikoden IV yet but tbh the fact that everyone says it’s so short makes it more appealing to me. I wish more Jrpgs were under 20 hrs.
Fair
Yeah, when you compare it to Suikoden 3 or Suikoden 5, Suikoden 4 is like a one shot D&D campaign. Because the stars weren't so spread out, and there wasn't as many "chore" stars to obtain, you'd end the game quickly with the whole roster. Compare that to the trinity system where some chapters were literally three hours long and there were several chapters, spread across three main characters, plus a few side chapters for other characters... Yeah, it was a long game. Suikoden 5 was similar. I'd argue even Suikoden 2 was drastically longer than this game on my first playthrough. Suikoden 4 is arguably close to the length of Suikoden 1 which is another game that (rng permitting on a few drops) can be finished in under twenty hours of play.
I did the brillant move (by accident) by having no clue what Suikoden was and this being my first Suikoden game. It blew me away, and boy was I in for a suprise when I tried the rest of the series. It is not as good as the rest of them but it is stll one of my favourites : )
I would highly recommend playing the companion game Tactics if you haven't. It makes me like this game a bit more. Also there's save data carryover. It really makes IV seem like a full game if you play the two together. It's also a quality game and actually represents that there was still some talent left at Konami at this point.
I mostly agree with your analysis of forgettable characters in IV, with a few exceptions. Kika I found was decently fleshed out as well. Elenor Silverburg was outstanding and is probably one of the most interesting characters in the entire series.
Also with all the talk of the curse of the Rune of Punishment I thought it was a incredibly cool callback for Kawano to bring back Ted and show part of his cursed journey with the Soul Eater. Also the small fanservice with the MushroomVMint battles was funny to see.
I do wish Suikoden IV got a Windwaker HD fixed version with better in game art for the characters (Portraits were spot on) and rebalancing of the random encounters and sped up ship portions. I think that'd bring it to a passable game.
The catalyst of Suikoden IV's story being mostly bad is Yoshitaka Murayama not being with Konami any more after being burnt out after 3 and Konami's general mismanaging of their talent. Without his knowledge of the Suikoden world they spent the rest of the series in the past (And then after . Maybe they were hoping they'd get him back eventually to continue the series. Even with Eiyuden happening he's not completly against the idea of Suikoden continuing just like pretty much everyone else doesn't want to work at Konami.
Can't blame them after reading reports like this. www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2015/08/03/scathing-konami-report-alleges-cruel-and-unusual-employee-practices/?sh=4d44224f408b
Agreed with your assessment 100%. Thanks for checking out the video!!
I can beat Suikoden 1 in about 15 hours, so the short game play length of Suikoden 4 never really bothered me.
Understandable.
Suikoden 4 is indeed a short RPG, but somehow it feels more complete after playing Suikoden Tactics.
I’ll have to check it out.
short... it was long or I thought it was too long. I guess I wished it was shorter 🤣
I didn't really notice much of the common complaints about S4 as I was such a huge fan boy and just really glad to be able to witness additional lore within suikoverse, but then again I was kinda autopiloting 3 to 5. One obvious issue with 4 though is the travel by sea thingy. Also, I agree with how gloomy looking it was everywhere. Don't remember much of the plot too lol
Good OST, good mini-games, and good spin-off (Tactics, at least for its gameplay mechanics)
That seems to be the most common feedback im getting that Suikoden Tactics makes this experience so much better.
I played the series a little bit older in life. Suikoden 4 has major flaws, but I did not think it was as bad as people say, for me at least, it's the definition of fine. I will say, Snowe is a great character, quite annoying, but so real, my inly complaint is how far we get him into the party and he has no time to develop his relation with Lazlo. But I kinda like the game, I think it's charming, even with it's flaws. I also played Suikoden 2, and while I do agree it's a lot better than 4, I hated the true ending, the main character and Jowy kinda ruined for me, and I was left with a bitter taste in my mouth, even though the game is really good. But I honestly think nostalgia kicks in when judging 4, cause it's not as bad as I read people's comments
I think you misunderstood the death of Troy.
That's actually how a captain of a ship should die, and he's dying in honor by staying at his sinking ship and refuse the help of his foe.
I hope they remaster it. :( I loved this game as I kid, I wonder if they'll bring it back. And how were you able to play it?.
Emulator. PCSx2
@@LC356 I gotta get a pc :/
@@LC356 I bet you play dragon ball z on there
Ya know its funny. Suikoden 4 was the game that got me interested the series
i think this game deserves a remake, because the main ship is cool it's like warships from WW2 (they're big and strong but easy target so they have to manuver it strategically) and the rune of punishment is such a cool rune it deserves the spotlight, i think if they remake this they should make the formula like they did all of suikoden and that is 6-man formation battle, then give more island so that the map isn't a huge waste of blue and lastly more ships (because the fleet is so small)
please game developers remake flaws of a game series not just the popular ones
Suikoden IV is really a black sheep...
the story is medicore and the encounter rate is frikkin high..
but aside that problem, its still suikoden game..
It could’ve been so much more but it was clearly scrapped together with minimal resources and this is the outcome
I recently played S4 again and whilst I still enjoyed it, compared to the other games it just doesn't stand. The encounter rate was my main issue and I ended up emulating the game with gameshark just to have a skip encounter switch so I could enjoy it. I think it had potential but lacked heart. It's obvious that the team behind this game were not the same people who made the first 2.
Exactly it feels like a husk of it's former glory tbh
Personally suikoden 4 was fantastic....but it was hella short. Having the new game+ was cool though
I dig New Game+ also
So there is an explanation for the tree boss. In one of the old books they describe how the recruitable character Warlock summoned a creature from another dimension and that its seeds held tremendous and volatile runic magic. Every rune shell in every ship is a seed from that tree monster. The reason why Warlock is in hiding and assassinated after the game is because of the dangers he unleashed.
All of that is really cool lore but the game is harmed by the fact that that information is hidden in a missable lore book most people won't read.
I just finished Suikoden 4 as in today. I'd be honest saying that Suikoden 4 is better than Suikoden 3.
edited - the only thing I hated in this game is the travelling via boats
I love the Suikoden series but this game was so bad to me I had to force myself to beat it.
I've been having dreams on this game for years. I guess my mind wanted more content than what it had in store. Nonetheless, it helped me learn English maybe more than school probably did. By the way I really enjoyed some of the music and discovering un-inhibited islands. I agree about the unacceptable encounter rate but as a child I didn't know better, so I just accepted it. I've watched the other Suikoden games but for some reason this one feels the most immersive to me, both back then and even today; Perhaps it's only because of the camera being in third (or first) person. If I'm not mistaken you can't control the camera in the previous title.
To this day my mom remembers the theme of Middleport and Base 2 by heart, lol.
Just got done with Suikoden V and Suikoden IV is just weird by comparison
the pirate one.. that's how I remembered it. I remembered it being super long 🤔 but I played it until I beat it. I barely remembered it. I probably didn't wanted it too be shorter. I haven't played it in a long time. 14 years or something
I remembered the boat battles 🤔 boat vs boat. Was that a thing or was that in a different game? I didn't hate the game because I played it all the way through. Something had my intention. Maybe the combat because I never run from a fight in a rpg. I have games I love & never bloody finish them. So it had to be something. I forgot about the tree boss 🤣
*reads the title* Hmmm... nope, wouldn't call this one something that ruined the franchise... but it does rate lowest of them all.
I haven’t played it yet, but I’ve never once seen someone that was a diehard “Suikoden IV” fan. At most, the best I’ve heard is: “It’s not that bad.”. LOL. (But at least we got “Suikoden V”, one of the best JRPG’s of all time.).
Konami must remake it.totally sure it will great with little bit improvement
Hopefully yes
i play 4 .....when i high enough
LMAOOO
This is the only game in the series that I gave up on mostly due to the high encounter rate and the much more bland looking characters that never hooked me like the other main characters. The subplots of your "best friend" really tested the forgiveness versus punishment theme and the king never figuring out his relationship to the main character was entertaining.
I agree the Snowe x Hero relationship was pretty well done. A part of me felt King Lino could've easily been the main character.
@@LC356 He certainly had more personality. I saw that you started playing V; it is a very slow start but it is my favorite.
I do like witnessing the might of the soul eater, kinda liked the rune of punishment, but the damn story was shorttttt compared to 3 lol
Yes indeed
The bot was not better
The Ocean.....
I'd say 3 ruined the franchise well before this.
I like that one the must 🤷🏾
Haha this game made me hate voice acting, I still turn it off any chance I'm given. And it was just bad. Very.. drab. Five was a bit better, thankfully.
Facts.
