  • I have been meaning to try out some medium-format glass on my Fujifilm system for quite a while. Specifically my Mamiya RB67 glass. I decided to start a little smaller (and less expensive) adapting my Mamiya 645 lenses first to see how they perform. The lenses were actually pretty rad. Sharp and very few noticeable flaws.

What sets it apart: In my experience Background perspective gets (attractively) weird when extra glass like a reducer or a front teleconverter comes into play. beyond the focal plane, I see kinda uncanny 3D looks. Your composition accentuates this--the shot looking down from the dune at the girl in the orange sarong plays this. there's another shot at the start of the video where you're shooting over a pool, the plants in the distance have a similarly uncanny vanishing point look.
Sharpness feels fine for human narrative stuff. Kinda on the edge of unusable for stuff centering on nature, where the detail or movement of leaves, sand, the tidepool goop feels a little troubled in terms of sharpness.
The Kipon reducer our other commenter friend remarked upon was what I was looking at.
These lenses are in the back of my head for putting on GFX cameras, If I ever get my own (Sub 10 grand) humble version of big boy DP money, I'd want to try faking arri 65 looks with GFX. medium format field of view just feels so critical to the look of outdoor filmmaking in the genres I want to photograph--westerns, naval, war movies.

Umm interesting way of looking at it with the 3D bit. It is interesting looking for sure but not crazy or overly exaggerated as I mentioned like some lenses. For sure there are few vintage lenses (at least budget friendly) that are tack sharp for things you mentioned. I think vintage glass most often is best at human narrative where a bit softer skins etc are better. In that aspect they are sharp but yeah wouldn’t compare them with modern for those things.

Dude, try the Mamiya Sekor Z 140mm macro on portraits.
