      Except what's funny is that when lighter loads were used the GM smoked the other two. Ram and Ford just arbitrarily make up a big tow number. I bet GM would do better than both the Ford and Ram with 30k behind it.

      Whit Kern Funny thing is the GM’s are not rated as high as the Ford and Ram for weight.. it’s not a made up number that number has to be accurate, it is used for licensing/permits as well as they are mostly used commercially.

      that's a common misconception because you can tune either of those with full emissions intact and get 500hp no problem. Swap the turbos out or add a turbo and guys are getting over 600hp on the Ram. Emissions only hurts fuel economy in the Ford and Chevy. RAM pretty much stays the same when deleted.

      Eddeville303 if you remove some of those luxury features and think of this as a commercial vehicle test, ram won with slightly better mpg and the air bag suspension to level out the back. If your reason to purchase one of these and your choice is 100% work related then Yeah the ram. But if those luxury features are important, the Ford. I love a good competition. However if you need to haul 30klb daily I wonder if a class 4 truck would be better. *shrugs*

    Hey fellas, I love these head to head tests y'all do. Always answer 90% of my questions, at least. Just a couple points I found annoying and thought I'd mention.
    1 - DEF does not give you power, guys. It doesn't even go through the engine. These trucks use what's called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to control NOx emissions. This is achieved by spraying DEF in the exhaust where it will react in the catalyst.
    2 - The exhaust brakes on these trucks are one and the same with the turbo. Nowadays, they all use Variable Geometry Turbos.
    To achieve braking, they close the vanes which also increases exhaust volume as it spools up the turbo.
    Last, if I buy a RAM, I'll be looking into the Pacbrake Load Leash. Pretty cool stuff. Probably would decend super Ike with no brakes because it changes the valve timing to maximize the effect of the exhaust brake.

Multiple test drives of all three and looking over the options, power, and accessories landed me on the Ford. Chevy wasn’t even in the running but Ram gave the Ford a good run for its money. Just had to go with what I felt was the better truck. And after owning the Ford F-250 for just a few months and pulling trailers constantly....I am NOT disappointed. Incredible truck.

    I had a 1994 Ford F-350 Dually with the new power stroke diesel. I was a flooring contractor at the time. I had a 36' flat bed goose neck trailer. Doing schools at the time. Two trucks showed up with two schools of flooring. Dropped them both at the one school. Not only was my truck a diesel but also had a 2000k lbs western hauler bed on it and it was a standard transmission. We loaded that second truck on my flat bed at a total gross of 38,900 lbs. Let out the clutch and she took off. Never even knew it was back there till I tried to stop. I pulled over 20k all the time at 75-80 mph down I20. She never bucked at all. Ford back then was awesome

    Just watched the new super Ike gauntlet. Great video but 2 points of contention are that on my 2017 f350 the second air brake setting seems to keep my fifth wheel from gaining speed better than the first setting and the sound from my double moonroof is noticeably louder when the fabric is retracted. My buddy has a 2017 ram 3500 and I think the moonroof size comes into play when there is that much glass exposed for sound testing due to the Fords bigger size. Keep up the great work!

    Bought a 18 ram 3500, coming from the legendary 7.3. I've always driven Ford's. 7 main bearings on the Cummins vs 5 on the powerstroke. One main bearing sits between each connecting rod. Tons of grunts, with fewer moving parts. I drive the Cummins. It's going to outlast the stroker hands down. Look under the hood. The Ford looks like a rat's nest. The Cummins is clean and easy to work on without pulling the cab. That's the seller for me.

      Good choice. When I parted ways with my 7.3, I went to Dodge. So many times over the years, I have thought about how much of a disaster it would have been if I had gotten into the 6.0 and 6.4 Powerjokes. But that Navistar 7.3 was a great mill, that's for sure. My only gripe back than, was the fact that I hated the soft Ford chassis. Back then I wished I could have had a 7.3 in a GMC. But for me, it's Ram going forward.

      @alexsmba Před 6 lety +6

      js9234 it doesn’t matter, they don’t perform anywhere near as well as the automatics. Diesels do really well with automatics. If you are driving it empty, you will use 2nd to get going, then 4 slow long shifts to get to 6th (compared to a car) and you will be in 6th by 35mph (unlike a car). Anything over that, and definitely over 40mph, there are no more gear shifts. Then you’re doing higher rpm on the highway, when you wish the rpms would drop like the automatic. So it’s way slower accelerating. Not as nice on the highway, and you don’t really get the opportunity to enjoy shifting like you do with a sports car, through the corners because you won’t be downshifting on those roads.

    I agree that the RAM is a better truck. I drive a 2007 3500 and added air ride suspension to level the ride (I bought the truck used), and I also added an exhaust brake. I find that the breaking on a steep downhill is not excessive, and it also extends brake lining life. Because the RAM came with a standard 35 gal fuel tank, I added an auxiliary tank (50 gals) and tripled the distance between fuel stops.

All these manufacturers have stepped up their power to semi-like levels, but still run 11.8-12" ring gears, and these diffs get HOT! Oil goes into thermal runaway. Not sure how you couldn’t thumbs up this, a hell of a production to put these head to head fully loaded. This is so much harder to prep and film than it looks.

    powerstroke has all that extra horse power yet still can't out pull a cummins. Both are good trucks but looks like neither can tow 30k

    • @cumminspower2473
      @cumminspower2473 Před 6 lety +1

      can someone explain how that's possible not only does it have more power it also spanked the cummins in a drag race yet you put weight on it and it's not as fast . also neither one of these trucks "can" tow as much as they say hell you can't even do the speed limit

    • @fruitmonsta1809

      Cummins Power 247 Horsepower doesn’t play as big of a factor as torque does while towing. I’m a Ford fan but that the straight six is best suited for heavy towing. They’re much “torqier” by nature whereas the V8 is made to rev higher which produces more HP.

    • @cumminspower2473
      @cumminspower2473 Před 6 lety +1

      I understand that but either way you look the Ford has more torque hence should pull better apparently the ram just puts more power down regardless of the rating

    The truck driver came out of Mr.Truck even being a Ford guy. The Straight 6 is king for towing heavy loads period......😊 Great review. I knew who the winner would be when it got to maxing out the trucks capacities.

      I6 vs V8, the V8 always wins in the speed department is equally powerful and stock, because the I6 doesen't rev as high. But im a Cummins guy. When they pull lighter trailers the Ford always wins, because it can go faster in the same gear.

      @michaelking1869 Před 6 lety +2

      I'm not sure what the hell you're talking about. They stated that they were wide open. There was no lugging the motor or turning the fan on. The fan comes on when the computer that Ford programmed tells it to. As for lugging it, they were wide open and again the computer that Ford programmed choses the gear and lockup settings. The Ford should have done better and it also isn't because it's a V8. The I6 has a slight advantage with heat, but that is really about it. Under normal towing that isn't a huge grade and for that amount of time the Ford would likely do better, but it didn't.

    People liked diesels because of:
    1. Power
    2. Fuel Efficiency
    3. Reliability
    4. Longevity
    They're pretty much all gone now except power. A semi truck can haul more than double what these trucks can and get about the same fuel mileage... there's something not quite adding up here.

      That’s why I stick with the pre emissions trucks,a lot more reliable. My 02 7.3 F350 gets just as good mileage as our ‘12 does. I’m still getting 18-20mpg even weighing 7,000lbs of solid American steel. May not match the power outputs,but she’ll outlast any new truck with less problems,guarantee it

    Curious why you guys don’t do the actual fill up to measure fuel mileage like on other tests. As you have shown before, some computers are more conservative than others.

    • @benjaminwayneb
      @benjaminwayneb Před 6 lety +2

      The way they fill the vehicles isn't accurate, the air chamber and filler neck in all vehicles reacts differently. When you watch when they do the second click there is a huge difference in how much fuel is pumped between vehicles. Even on a 100 mile loop a 1/2 gallon can make a few miles per gallon difference.

    • @therealjohnsmith4811
      @therealjohnsmith4811 Před 6 lety +1

      benjaminwayneb I agree. I think the actual fill up at least verifies what the computer says.

    • @chevyon37s
      @chevyon37s Před 6 lety

      benjaminwayneb the way they fill is as accurate as you can do at the pump. Plus they fill the same way before and after the test so your "air chamber in the filler neck" theory doesn't matter.

    I have owned owned both f350 and ram 3500 and I like them both. They both have done their job. I am pushing 26,000 when I am on the road and I am looking at getting a new one here in a few months and not sure how I am going this time. On the f350 I have to put air bags on to carry my camper and pull are big horse trailer. The ram has the air system already but its going to come down to who going to give me the best deal.
