GypsyDave, wanted to let you know that I had never heard Marcus before I saw Fil's video. He's fantastic, and that's coming from a 60 year old grandmother!! I actually downloaded his song onto my phone after hearing this. By the way, I hope that you and Fil had the chance to interact. Fil's not only great on these discussions, but he's also a fantastic guitarist, performer and songwriter. He has a great album of his music called Persistence. Anything you can do to help promote him would be greatly appreciated by Fil's fans! By the way, he has a live webchat every week on Tuesdays nights at 7 pm EST (I watch from Tennessee).

Going to see MKB this coming Sunday in Baldwinsville NY. I am so excited. Marcus is an incredible talent you should be so proud. As a veteran musician of 40 years myself this band, your son is a breath of fresh air in an other wise dismal musical landscape.

No question...he is one of the most important musicians to ever hit the scene period. Guitar, voice and song writing. Gary Clark Jr too!!!
Just discovered Marcus King late last night.
Don't even know how to describe him.
I somehow caught him in an interview. Said he'd stopped listening to other guitarists, and started listening to Coltrane instead.
And that floored me, being so into Country and bringing Jazz into Country Blues.
And so I Wikipedia him. And found out he'd abandoned recording for awhile and got a Doctorate in Jazz Theory.
Again, he's a Unicorn!
Can't wait to see how far he'll go.
I read somewhere where duane allman listened to Miles Davis daily for 2 years,no surprise that the best musicians study jazz
I just discovered Marcus last week and I've been listening to him ever since. What an amazing talent. Everything is coming to head for him right now, and he's in the process of rising to the very first tier. He's playing the Beacon Theater in NYC next week, and there are some orchestra center seats going for over $600. Whoever does the arrangements also deserves a ton of credit. On his simpler songs, he voices the sax and trumpet in a way that's reminiscent of early Van Morrison. On more complex progressions like this one, they sound like Steely Dan, and that's really saying something. As a "blues" musician this puts him totally in a league of his own.
Marcus is a breath of fresh air on the music scene, it's great to see his most recent album is getting a ton of recognition
Just found out about this band over the weekend, watched everything I could find. I just wanted to add, that's his grandfather's old Gibson. His dad plays pretty darn good too.

For me evokes Smokey Robinson. Now I don't know the "hows" and "why fors", my subconscious just knows what it knows. Which balances out my sometimes over analytical brain. Heck, I bet his papa listened to Smokey.

Marcus King has what so most wish they had (or should wish they had). He has that old school sound without a shred of pretentiousness or gimmicky nonsense. he is the kind of cat that would have made in no problem in the 60's or 70's, just raw talent. I listen to this guy and just know he is the real deal. It's too bad that this type of talent isn't respected more in mainstream music/radio. If it were, we would be hearing a lot of guys and gals that have loads more talent than what the music industry pukes out every year, because they would effectively be setting the bar for one another, just like in the 70's, where actual talent was required. These are real musicians, I could go on and on....

Really cool, what a great voice Marcus has! i love how you cant pin this band into category. They have developed their own style which is really wonderful melodically. I would love to see him live! Hi Fil! Been in the biz for a long long time and I think this may be one of the best produced live takes I've ever heard! There's a separate video from Jam in the Van on how they nailed the quality of this take, which is definitely worth checking out. All the best to you and keep up the great work!

Great video! I had the opportunity to see them live in a little music venue in Jackson, Mississippi called, Duling Hall. Seeing them live is even better! Marcus and his band have a tremendous talent! I wish them all the success!
I love this kid this is new fresh and man his voice is amazing he has the whole package I haven't seen anything like this since stevie ray but marcus's sound is like he isn't just stuck in that box.
Never heard of this guy but he, and his band, are great. Nice, original chord changes. Kind of sounds like the Allman Bros. and Steely Dan had a baby! Love the Lagunitas poster behind the drummer.

Great! Thanks, Fil! Seems i have a story about a lot of things you cover...I saw Marcus when he was 16 in Greenville, South Carolina at his 1st cd release party...was at a brewety/bar outside. We were floored! My friend invited me because he'd seen Marcus gigging around town. Marcus's dad even got on stage and played some...he's famous in his own right for blues playing . The drummer was a Bonzo clone and was great. Thanks for the mammories, Fil!

Completely agree with your comment regarding his legato. Worth mentioning is that this technique doesn't get any easier when you play 11 gauge strings as Marcus does. He has extraordinary strength in his left-hand fingers which I believe is one of the reasons he can generate a very unique sound. An amazing musician.

Your analysis is always fascinating. Others have explained and demonstrated why a guitarist "sounds a certain way" and I was wondering if you had a guitar with you , you could show/demonstrate this to the audience.
Yeah I tried that before but unfortunately I haven't got an extra input I can use, so the guitar couldn't be heard very well!

Marcus is an old soul who will keep the music going for generations to come. He's so good and so young. He's only going to get better with age. I saw the Marcus King Bands 1st NYC gig and he was better than most guys who have been playing for over 50 years. He blew the roof off the place. I bought him a soda because he was not old enough to drink yet.
I highly recommend you check out the following two bands Umphrey's McGee & Electric Octopus. Both of these bands feature some of my current favorite guitar player.
Umphrey's McGee is an American rock band originally from South Bend, Indiana. Formed by students at the University of Notre Dame in 1997, UM has continued to add members. The band experiments with many musical styles, including rock, metal, funk, jazz, blues, reggae, electronic, bluegrass, and folk. They have toured regularly and released several albums. While the band's approach shares many elements with groups such as Phish and the Grateful Dead, such as varying set lists, improvisation, and allowing fans to tape concerts, they are more influenced musically by progressive rock artists such as King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, and early Genesis, as well as heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden and Van Halen. The band also identifies The Police, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin as primary influences.
Electric Octopus are a new and exciting musical cabal from Belfast that'll take your mind on a weird and wonderful adventure. Electric Octopus do not play by the rules. Instead they plug in and jam .Every song is made up on the spot. Some songs can easily go 20+ minutes. According to the bands Facebook page Genre : Everything and anything. One minute you think you are listening to Jimi Hendrix and the next you think you are listening to Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. They mix everything from Psychedelic, Rock, Blues, Funk, Jazz and whatever else they feel like playing. Sometimes all in the same song. You never know what you’re going to get. You tune in and space out and enjoy the magical journey.

Great job, as usual, Fil! It’s cool how you explain the ways in which technique is used to convey emotion in music. Some players think it’s all about technique, but technique is just a vehicle, while emotional impact is the destination. Marcus has all that by the truck (van?) load! His latest album shows great maturity in his songwriting and when you think he’s every minute of 22 years old, imagine what lies ahead for this impressive young band and their fans! I’m hoping to catch them live at an outdoor show this summer, which would really be the cat’s ass!!

Great analysis and brilliant point about the importance of portraying a feeling with the solo. It pertains to all styles as well. It’s what separated Eddie Van Halen from all the other shredders of that time-Or Tommy Emanuel from most acoustic players. That real connection that allows the listener to feel what’s being played. Marcus is definitely at that level and I can’t wait to see what he does next. Thanks.

This one caught my eye because I so enjoyed the Billy Strings/ Marcus King one you did a while ago. (Lots of these 'Jam in the Van' videos have great players and sound. They always shoot the instruments in a nice close up fashion and The Van is solar powered, too!) Haha...thanks for stopping to define legato. I was off to Google, but didn't even need to leave. I know it's not credible, but I am so aware of how much you try to do, that I refrain from commenting on every single one that I've loved, but this was particularly awesome! Thanks for all of it. Bravo!
Saw him live dec 18 and I have seen many many immense shows but this was truly on another plane. His talent/execution is hard to put into words, the constant flow I have only heard in Hendrix and SRV. Lots of that Wynton Marsalis “some things in music you can’t put into words” stuff going on. Just other level stuff.

They're as tight as hell - the Marcus King Band is my new favorite!
Marcus appears to use only three fingers on the left hand for lead. Clapton is similar. A lot can be achieved, but using the fourth (small) finger can facilitate legato or staccato playing along the lines of Malmsteen, Van Halen, Holdsworth, Di Meola, and DeMartini. This is why I learnt major, chromatic, harmonic minor, and blues scales early on using all left hand fingers pretty much equally.
He does and all player us the first three more and i don't listen to the players you mentioned to much noodling not enough feel.
