Uhhh this was the most trench sounding track of all 3??? Literal Morph vibes, but a bit more lofi. And saying that Next Semester is trench vibes is criminal, as it the least sounding trench single of the 3 so far. In fact, although it is a great track absolutely love it, apart from the ukele part at the end, Next Semester is the least 21 pilots sounding song I can think of. You can't be begging for trench songs and then give a meh and bad score for the 2 songs that literally sound like trench, but love the one that doesn't. Reeks of inconsistency.

I'm struggling to understand his comments on Backslide.
1. Instrumentally this track is the closest sounding to Trench so far. Meanwhile, the song he loved-Next Semester-is the furthest sounding from Trench.
2. He credits Next Semester for the lyricism when Backslide is almost a direct continuation from that song. The song talks about being trapped in a cycle by personal failures. At the end of the chorus he tells the person trying to help him to let go because he feels to far gone-"You should let go, it's over my head". He literally cannot "start fresh next semester".
3. It seems like he tunnel visioned so hard on the verses that he didn't even take the chorus into account. Imo Backslide has one of the most "rocking" choruses in their entire discography. There's a great instrumental buildup, and you can even hear some screamed backing vocals in the latter half.
4. While I don't think the rapping was stellar it was far from offensive-Really it felt more like singing than rapping. I think the second verse was the worst part of the song(the delivery/rhythm was weird at points), but even then the song is like 10% rapping, 90% singing. Most of this song is the chorus-which is not rapping.
Again, I think he tunnel visioned incredibly hard on the verses.
Saw that he put Twenty One Pilots as the first worst track of the week and exited the video
Was with you on Overcompensate and Next Semester, but personally think Backslide is a fantastic track. That chorus is superb. It does feel like a bit more close to their older stuff so not surprised you didn't like it. To each their own, but I'd assume you would also agree it comes with a catchy hook
think there's a ton to like about the track even if I can get why some stuff about the verses can take you out of the song- but thought it was tasteful enough personally and paved way for a nice contrast from the big booming hook

Backslide doesn't deserve that placement, I didn't dig it on first listen but the second time it clicked perfectly and I really got into. The lyrics are very sweet too. It's that chorus that really shines though, "I should've loved you better. Do you think that now's the time?"

Nah, Backslide is my favourite from the upcoming album so far, and my favourite video also, such a powerful concept and great execution
Even though the rapping part may sound a bit clunky but I think it fits Tyler's character quite well
And I like the crescendo to the chorus so much, just shows how the thought of backsliding is coming back and occupying the whole brain

I don't get what makes him such a big deal among his fanbase and the electronic/indie community in general🤔 But don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to shat on his face or anything here.
I get the appeal of his music and I think he made some pretty good stuff from what I've heard so far. What I don't really understand is the frequent talks and admirations he got from both the music community and critic consensus alike in general.
I mean for an artist whose musical appeal came from its own passion in Japanese pop culture, I feel like he may be getting a tad too much credit for what he's doing. More than he deserves imo.
It's not because his music isn't good enough to warrant that recognition, but because his fame seems to obscure more similar Japanese artists and groups at home from getting the same level of recognition as he did.

The rapping in Backslide came out as boring in a meh beat, has a few points in the song where you feel it's about to pick up but for me it never does. I appreciate the lyrics in backslide but I appreciate my hearing experience first.
