  • Amy Mihaljevic, known to her parents and various schoolmates as a sparkling young girl to their family and loving neighbourhood, was an adventurous and outgoing resident of Bay Village, Ohio. Her passion for the natural world and promising athletic talents were cut short by an unexplainable, unsolved death in late October of 1989, leaving all who knew her across the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio and later the entire country grasping for answers in a sea of evidence that drowned us all in doubt…
As a hope to provide more substantial reasoning built upon observable evidence and situational analysis, this is an examination of Amy Hihaljevic’s kidnapping and murder, and the mystery of the manhunt for a Lake Erie (eerie) predator... This is Cold Case Detective.

I would disagree that the killer had to have intimate knowledge of the Mihaljavec family and Amy’s “deep rooted connection to her mother.” He may indeed have had this knowledge, but it is just as likely that he didn’t. He made similar phone calls to other girls who didn’t fall into the trap. Obviously his knowledge of them was not that intimate and Amy could have simply been the next name on his list.

    • @awkwardautistic
      @awkwardautistic Před rokem

He knew where her mother worked.

    • @godwarrior3403
      @godwarrior3403 Před rokem +15

I agree. Intimate knowledge isn't really needed to see if someone's home or not. All he'd have to do is ask "Okay when are your parents home? We don't want them seeing you go off to get the gift." It honestly seems like she's just one who took the bait. He probably was a resident though so likely would have had knowledge of the area. Not that you need it to dump a body on a road.
To be honest, I usually don't know about many things I hear covered in true crime cases, so when they say stuff like that I just accept it. But almost every time I do know about something involved, they seem to make more of it than there likely is or they're just flat out wrong. For example on Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries, the woman who apparently committed suicide that they suspect was foul play. They say she used a 9mm, a big heavy one, and describe it as a powerful round with a big recoil so the gun should have flown out of her hand. But I'm a gun guy. Any gun person can and will tell you the 9mm is famously clowned for being a weak round, and a heavier gun means less recoil. And either way there's no reason to think a 9mm would have enough recoil to launch out of your hand. It absolutely doesn't. I think investigators sometimes say an inaccurate opinion and it makes them get caught on unnecessary details. Probably sometimes to the detriment of the case.

The suspect supposedly worked at a camp where all the girls he called attended. There was a person who was deeply invested in this story who did more investigating than any cop. Everything about the guy lead anyone with half a brain to know he did it. Now, I’m not for persecution without a fair trial but he did live near the body, moved after, worked at the camp where all the girls attended. He then would’ve had intimate knowledge.

If it were something like an accident, or natural disaster, or illness, it would have been equally traumatic; nevertheless, at least there would have been closure. Thank you for covering this case- I’ve always hoped you would. This case is very close to home for me as well, as I grew up in a neighboring town and my mother told me about her and her case as a way to warn and teach me about never going anywhere with strangers. I also grew up visiting the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center, and even volunteered there when I was 20-21 years old. There is a memorial plaque for Amy inside. The center underwent a nearly complete renovation and expansion sometime in the early 2000’s I believe, but I still have memories of the way it was before, and as how it would have been for Amy.
I read James Renners Book and reached out to him to thank him for his in-depth research in this case in 2010 and we had a brief correspondence. I also have ties to a former classmate of Amy’s and a detective on her case.
I desperately want this case solved and I thank you again for continuing to keep her in people’s thoughts.

The saddest part of cases like this is that children like Amy who are bright and curious about the world around them. Who love and accept every living thing should be rewarded for these things.
The murder of children is disgusting, disturbing, messed up and should never happen to begin with.
Worse, if everyone was like Amy these kinds of crimes would never happen.

I have read the book by James Renner, on this Amy Mihajevic case, and it's very
likely that it's Dean Runcle, that was Amy's killer. He was one messed up guy, and
wrote love letters to a 10 year old boy. Also he went to the Lake Erie Nature
Center where all the young kids left their phone numbers, names and addresses.
He was a teacher at the same school Amy went too, and when advised that all
teachers would be fingerprinted for ID purposes in the future, he immediately
packed up and left the State, "leaving 20 years of his pension " behind. He then
ran away to Florida, and ended up in a homeless shelter for quite some time,
before finding work at a Wendy's restaurant. Talk about a guy running scared,
      I'd say it's Dean Runkle.
He's a dead ringer for the sketch that was released by Police, which was drawn
from eye witness accounts from people that saw the killer pick up Amy at the
shopping center. Because there is no real DNA evidence, they should bring this
case to court on "circumstantial evidence" which I believe would find Dean Runkle
as Amy's killer. They better do this fast, as most suspects will be dead in 10 years.

Similar if the person made a call in the afternoon and a child answered most kids would, at least back then, politely answer to when they are expected home if a grown up asked to speak to the parent. They had some suspects of such nature, so it's perhaps not neccesarily someone someone close specifically to the family, but in a position to pick up such information, perhaps in a cadual context when parents drop off and pick up their kids at the activity?

He could have gleaned his potential victim pool from the log book, and cross referenced the girls with any of their parents that worked in the businesses he cleaned/maintained/landscaped, etc.

Too true (or if not executed, at least kept in prison permanently & not in 'protective custody'. And of all the sexual predators, those who prey on children have _by far_ the highest recidivism rate, so much so that it's almost shocking if they _don't_ reoffend... & it seems it never stops until they're either:
      a) In prison
      b) Suffering some health issue that prevents them from being able to act on their urges
      c) Dead.
I've seen stories about 70/80-something year old men _still_ riding around in vans scouting possible targets. Just... It's awful. I was almost snatched from a mall department store when I was 5...I was incredibly lucky he seemed to be inexperienced & acting on impulse/opportunity after I wandered away from my Mom in the clothes aisle. He got me as far as the door with me thrown over his shoulder before he was spooked by the employees at the help desk right in front of the door to the parking lot. He dropped me like a sack of potatoes & sprinted out to his car. We never could identify him & I always wondered if someone else who ran into him wasn't as lucky as I was
Seeing what others have gone through when I was somehow spared... This predilection is just so dangerous & none of them should _ever_ get the chance to do it again. If we're worried about 'overcrowding', then we should start paroling those with non-violent crime convictions (like drugs, etc) to make room for the monsters who need that space more. /rant

I'm from America and I grew up under a very strict household. We grew up under middle class not rich, not poor, but in the middle some what. My parents were really young when they had us. 3 girls. They built a small 3 bedroom house. And took extra care of us especially since we were girls. We were not allowed to go anywhere with friends. I mean no where. We were considered a bit odd cuz we were the only ones who couldn't go to sleep overs or party's. Nor couldn't have are friends over 2 spend the nite. We could only be friends in school that was it. It was actually okay with us cuz we had girl cousins that we were best friends with and were able to have them over with us. Not really us go spend the nite at their house. My mom also took us to the mall and to movies. She was not that older then us. Strangers thought she was a Older sister. My father took us to his grandparents ranch and taught us lots of different things. We were also really close to are grandparents. Long story short, we are so proud that we grew up in a very strict manner cuz we did not have the same outcome as alot of are childhood friends. We got to enjoy are selves and finish school. Get married to wonder men. And have beautiful family. It all depends how u are rooted. Sometimes it doesn't matter how strict parents were. Evil is everywhere and evil doesn't sleep.

But in a nutshell There was a 21 yr old male walking around our high school pretending to be a fellow 16 yr old student.
He targeted me and several other girls.
We had no idea he was a grown ass adult pretending to be a student there.

The use of phones is strikingly unique. Luring Amy to meet in public, Amy calling her mom at work to lie about where she was. And when she called (police?) saying she was in Maine. Which could have been pre-recorded.
And the many calls to children trying to lure them with the same pretext. (In another program) Sisters sensed they were being watched around when the calls came.
I don’t know what telecom technology was like in that area at that time but the killer was very confident (ie knowledgable) in telecommunications.
He targeted kids who’s mothers worked and called between the end of school and when the parents returned. And he knew the phone calls couldn’t be traced back to him.
He was also good at talking to kids. Engaging them without scaring them. Could be someone who worked around schools and was tech savvy especially with phones.
It’s terrible they got away with Amy’s murder and likely many others if the Lake Erie Murder series is correct, which seems likely.)

This happened before cellphones so the caller would have to know when to call so the parents weren't home. The other girls probably refused because their parents had talks with them about not going anywhere with an adult without their permission.

about the hair color, in regards to dean -- hair color can appear to change according to the lighting. also, dirty blonde and dark brown hair can get mixed up in peoples' memories, or one person may see some one and to them, that other person's hair may appear darker, while to another person, the hair may appear lighter. hair can appear darker in-doors, depending on the lighting, while out-doors hair can appear lighter. so i wouldn't put too much stock in that aspect in regards to dean or to any other individual suspected of a crime. again, when it comes to hair color, it can appear to change depending on the lighting, whether one is in-doors or out-doors and simply the perception of other people.
