- Cheryl Gene Grimmer was last seen at the shower block on Fairy Meadow Beach, New South Wales, on January 1st, 1970. She was just 3-years-old at the time of her disappearance and was 3ft tall with blonde hair and blue eyes. One distinguishing physical characteristic of Cheryl is that she has a navel which protrudes one centimetre due to a medical condition. She was last seen wearing a royal blue swimming suit with net panelling and carrying a white towel. There is currently a one million dollar reward available in her case. I could never have done that with my own children but as the oldest out of a family of 8, I was looking after my siblings, albeit mainly in the home, at 3/4 years old!
That was the way it was in the 1960s/70s and before so it wasn’t unusual.
There was always some punishment if my siblings cried (as all babies do!) so to look after 2/3 crying sibling at 4 years old was a hard task.
Even today the sound of a baby crying brings back the dread and fear I felt then.
But yes poor Ricky to have to live with that all his life.

@@m.y.o.b.724 absolute nonsense. It wasn't different back then. That's what people love to say on all the videos of the murders of children back then. Their murders prove it absolutely wasn't different. Parents were lazy and neglectful. Yet they love to criticise parents now.
Kids weren't coddled as much back then, and most parents weren't hovering over their children 24/7. Of course, a lot of bad stuff happened to kids too. People may've been more trusting and, without social media, not as aware. I spent most of my childhood and part of my teenage years in the 70s and it was a lot different from how my own kids grew up.
This is so sad. I feel for the brother. Even though it’s not his fault I’m sure it weighs heavy on him. 😢

@SugarShane It’s not his fault at all. His actions partially attributed to it happening, but the fault lies in one person only. He was a child in the 70s in Australia which is an overwhelmingly safe country, and also extremely hot. So kids would go to the beach by themselves. They’d play outside all day climbing trees. They play footy in the park. Kids were outside more than they were inside. He couldn’t ever have predicted that his sister would be abducted in 2 minutes at a public beach. The 70s in every country was an entirely different atmosphere to today’s constant 24/7 news cycle spreading fear and creating helicopter parents and mass surveillance. Even in the 80s me and my friends would travel to different suburbs on our own. We’d have 60 cents for the bus down to Bondi beach, and $1 for a pie, and we’d spend all day there alone with just us kids swimming and catching waves. Sure, crime still happened back then, but attitudes about safety were much more lax than today. You learned how to look after yourself. We actually did have this pedo try to say some really sick stuff to us once, but we chased him down and jumped him ourselves. 5 kids all under 13 bashing a grown man in the street lol. Police came and arrested him after an older guy held him down when we told him why we did it. It was a different world back then.

He was evil at the time yes however as time passes the evil that once was could feel both remorse & repentant.
Most predators go on to commit other crimes, often becoming more violent. They must be reported to be stopped.
Even if the offender is sorry, they should be stopped from further crimes.

But even if there is a chance such a person could be rehabilitated , society should not take the risk. Someone who takes an innocent life, whatever their age, forfeits their rights to be given the same consideration as other human beings. Our focus should be on protecting the innocent . Do what is best for society at large, not for one sick individual who might have reformed.

Confusing a seven year old for an adult man is simply impossible. A toddler asking for water repeatedly from a fountain is a scenario every parent has experienced.
Not really--it would be something they weren't really paying attention to. Think of it as something you see out of the corner of your eye when you're doing all the usual stuff at a beach when the weather suddenly turns. Your focus is on your family and your belongings. Also, people are very susceptible to suggestion when they want to help in a panicked situation. If an officer innocently says, 'What did the man look like?,' many people's mind will fill in the gaps with an adult male. It's one of several reasons why eyewitness testimony based on brief encounters is increasingly seen as unreliable.
People imagine all kinds of things, especially when you wouldn’t have understood the significance of the time.

It is not impossible. Jim Morrison lead singer of the doors was attested as many eye witnesses swore they saw him take his pants off on stage. When they examined a video of the event, it was discovered that he had only unbuttoned his pants and never removed them. And while it is highly likely that the audience was under the influence of drugs, this is also true for other cases too. Memories are not as iron clad as we would like to believe
Why keep the killer's name out of the media when he's 60 years old? Aussie law is so stupid, as are their cops who can't catch a murderer even when he comes right out to them and confesses.

Because he was a minor at the time of the crime. Laws apply to the person's age when the crime was committed, not how old they are now. By your logic, if a person committed a crime when they were 13, then the prosecution waited until they were 18, they would be tried as an adult for the crime they did when they were a minor.
I live in Europe. Listening to how "the law" works in other countries makes me truly wonder. Obvious or logical evidence gets often dismissed when there is no confession of the suspect or worse - no body is found. For me the problem is "the jury". I dont understand how people with no education in forensics or psychology are allowed to "declair someone innocent or guilty" of a crime. I thought thats the job of the judge? In Europe a judge - who studied hard for years - is the only one who is allowed to look at evidence during court session and gives the "thumbs up" or "thumbs down". I also feel like obvious (evidence or) logic is enough in Europe to convict someone for murder, and thats a good thing in my eyes.
@@lotuspocus76312 We kind of use “European” law. Australia’s law uses commonwealth law, which is based off British law. It’s extremely similar in many ways, but not all.

After watching this video, I would recommend watching the 60 Minutes Australia piece about this case. It includes interviews with Cheryl's brothers, and it's heartbreaking what they have endured all these years - the oldest brother in particular. It wasn't your fault!
I would subscribe to the 60 minutes Australia but you can't comment they turned off the section and so does a huge number of channels here.
He said he shouldn't have left her. But did she speak to him, when she, as he said, "refused to leave", or was she already gone by then?
I have never heard of this case before, so I have no idea. But if she didn't hear her voice and he just thought she refused to leave, but in reality she was already gone, then him leaving made no difference.
Either way, it's horrible to have to beat yourself up your entire life over something you did as a seven year old, losing your baby sister, and it really wasn't his fault.

Feel the moms pain. It is even to an adult is difficult to take care and watch 3 small kids age 3,4,5 and put that responibility to a 7 year old. You must admit that till a certain age, you just can not leave ur kids alone.
Dont bring 3 kids to the beach if you cant cope. This happened after the Beaumont kids. I am taken aback this kid was still left alone like that
@@lindc1070 That is so easy to say!! Even a mom of 2 kids, going out can 't possibly keep her eyes on the kids every second! It sometimes only takes a very short time and the right circumstances for something unexpected to happen!!

Cheryls parents broke up shortly after she disappeared but both parents always blamed the oldest brother for her disappearance and the break down of the family and the problems that ensued...😞😞😞 The oldest brother even to this day always carries that burden and pain..😞😞😞

In a case like this you have to wonder how many more bodies whoever did this has on their record.

This is so tragic. It is obvious the police had the right man until the judge threw out their case. The police bungled it to start with by disregarding the confession. My heart goes out to her brothers. I hope her parents and she now RIP.
I don’t think it’s obvious at all TBH. He had previously made another false confession about killing a guard, and there’s not a shred of proof that his story is true. There’s also no body where he said he left it. You can very easily describe somewhere if you’ve been there before, so him knowing what the place looked like isn’t proof of anything. People make false confessions all the time. Some cases have dozens of false confessions. I don’t think there was enough evidence to find him guilty. He was a mentally ill man with a low intellect. Sure, he could have done it, but you also can’t prove it in any way.

An unpopular opinion: For me, it's 50:50 on whether or not he did it. He has borderline intelligence and a history of other false murder confessions. Even if they had allowed the confession at trial, it would have been easily discredited by the mountain of mainstream research about how easily a teenager like him would be talked into a false confession EVEN IF the cops were doing their best to be "fair' as it was understood at the time. I'm not usually the biggest reasonable doubt guy, but this case just reeks of it.
I feel so awful for the oldest son. To me, the underappreciated villain in the story is the farm owner (or his son if it turns out the son was wrong about how the farm looked at the time). The whole case is just a sh**show.

Need I point out it wasn’t necessary, at the time, for a parent, guardian or a lawyer to be present when police interred the suspect. The police acted with the law. Next time listen and learn.
I don't understand why his identity is still a secret i mean he may have been a minor when he commited the crime but he's an adult now so why hasn't his identity been uncovered it makes no sense to me I mean even those who were children when they murdered their victims later had their names identified so why not this guy what's different about his case
If you commit a crime as a juvenile, then privacy laws forbid your name being public. The large majority of cases, the law is a good thing. You don’t want to publicly humiliate a child who might not even be guilty. It’s extremely rare for a juvenile offender to commit such a heinous act and not be arrested until he’s 70, so you’d have to amend the law if you wanted to change it, but it would never get used anyway. It also wouldn’t apply to him anyway, as you can’t just invent or amend laws to retroactively enforce them. That’s a power you don’t want your government having. People need to be held under the laws that exist at the time, or the government will just make laws up to lock people up whenever they deem necessary.

There sure are a lot of beach incidents in "Straya". The Somerton Man, the Beaumont children, the Wanda Beach murders, and now this one. And who knows how many more.

What is super alarming to me is while someone actually committed a crime like this, others claimed they did for attention.. You can understand how and why that poor brother has spent his life feeling guilty for what happened. His feelings are completely understandable. I have an enormous regret in my life, admittedly nothing as serious or devastating as this case, but nevertheless something I have spent the last 20 years regretting, wishing I could turn back the clock, wishing I'd made a completely different decision. Quite simply, it's like calling heads when everything was telling me to call tails. I know I probably shouldn't blame myself, but I do. And I'm right to do so. But that aside, I feel for the whole family, her parents and of course poor little Cheryl.
Sometimes you just have to accept what has happened. Hopefully you can reassure yourself your decision at the time was made with good intentions. If so, you should forgive yourself and not hold it as a grudge against yourself. If you made a decision with dishonourable intentions learn from it and the consequences and try to make it right over the years, or make up for it by being the best form of yourself you can be.

It was nothing illegal, nobody got hurt or anything like that, just something that had an enduring, significant and detrimental affect on our lives. Because the landowner said none of the story added up, and they were building on the site so they couldn't just start digging to see if they could find a body. Awful situation either way, and these older cases are often full of shoddy handling.
Because even with the confession there was no direct evidence that he was at the actual location.

On 60 Minutes Australia, there is a high budget documentary of this case, (Cheryl Gene Grimmer) including interviews with the brothers and their father who was so distraught after the fact that he couldn't forgive his family for losing his daughter. There is a clearly confessed killer who has been walked for technicality only. It's such a horrible crime now 53+ years on. R.I.P Cheryl Gene.

I am certain that the property owner who denied the confessor's details about the property did it on purpose, so as not to reduce his property's 'value' due to an active disappearance/homicide investigation. 😡
That’s absurd. You would have to be American with such a weird opinion. Only an American would assume that other people value property value more than life. Property values back then were extremely low. It would have been a cheap fibro building. And nobody is going to lie about the death of a child just to maintain 20% more value of your small farm. The most likely answer is that the father did know exactly what was on his property because he built it himself. He knows his land. The kid couldn’t possibly know more accurate information about when a fence was put up than his father who built it, and many decades later at that. My bet is that he and the police just wanted it to be true so he told them what they both wanted to be true so they could close the case. People make false confessions all the time. Some famous cases have had dozens of false confessions. There’s not a single shred of evidence that he did it, apart from his confession getting some details correct, but we haven’t heard a recording so we don’t even know if he was lead or coerced. It’s extremely suspicious, but remember he had actually falsely confessed to another crime before that too, and was mentally ill with a low intellect. No evidence, let alone a body was even found on his property either.

@@Bella.Parabellum I think it’s much more likely for a person to want to help the investigation, than someone else purposely lying about it to throw off the investigation simply because of property values that barely existed in the 70s. A house in Sydney was 15,000 at that time. A house in Illawarra was like 10,000. Americans are insane. You actually think that it’s normal for a person to worry about the value of their property when a child has gone missing? This is why your country is falling apart. You hold the most extreme views and have no trust in anybody else because you think they think like you. That’s not a normal thought to have.
Yeah, with the property in the middle of development, the cost that an investigation would cause and the loss in value of the property and delays for development would be reason enough to lie.

My parents and I immigrated to 🇦🇺 in 1969, I was 6, and to this day murderer's are rarely given long sentences let alone they seem to Keep them anonymous 😡. We only lived in NSW a yr then Adelaide where I was victim of attempted abduction. Our UK relative's couldn't believe the crime rates already here.

Yes, the 60s and 70s were dangerous in Australia for young kids, I agree. I too was almost abducted by an experienced criminal who I am sure would have killed me. Lucky I was already reading true crime at age 7 (!! I don’t why my parents let me but it saved my life). As a result I was aware of these paedophiles and did not go with him.
The property owner lied to the police because he didn't want them to halt his development whilst they looked for the little girls body. The police messed up by not corroborating the info the property owner gave them. The police
had their man and let him walk. The Judge let him walk. What a complete cockup by every one in charge of solving this case.
This is a tough one. I’m not 100% convinced it is that guy. Crazy people give false confessions all the time. I’m not sure he is innocent, but I’m not as convinced of his guilt as some of these other commenters.
It’s heartbreaking that they have not been able to find any forensic or trace evidence at all. I fear this one won’t ever be solved unless the killer, be it this guy or someone else, confesses and leads cops to the body or some piece of evidence like the girl’s clothes.
It’s terrible to think of what she went through and the way it tore this family apart.

No sane teenager would turn themselves in to the police, confess to a murder, and give a full account of said murder. That alone should have made detectives *extremely* suspicious.

This happened 4 years after the Beaumont kids disappeared from Glenelg. It seems not all parents in Australia were guarded enough even after this. I think the mum couldnt cope keeping an eye on all the kids

The property owner didnt wanted his property to lose value because a crime happened there...thats why he lied I guess.

Shame on the prosecutors and solicitors who let the guilty party free. They had their man twice and bungled it both times. It seems that U.K. and Australian legal systems care more about the criminals than the victims. Shameful.

Some of the pronunciations are a bit off. Wollongong is pronounced wool-on-Gong and Bulli is pronounced Bull-eye. You could have googled them very easily.

I think he must be pronouncing some numbers wrong, too. Every video he makes, he gives a phone number that is number-number-trouble-number-number-trouble-number-number-trouble... I don't remember what numbers he's saying, but the phone numbers always have "trouble" in them, and I can't figure out what number could be mispronounced as "trouble", unless maybe the phone numbers have the word trouble spelled out in them several times? But then that would be just plain annoying to have to dial all those letters.
