This video, and all of the reaction videos on this channel, transform the original material from entertainment into a commentary, educational and/or opinion expressing video. The original content that is “reacted” to is analyzed by professional commentators and podcasters, who use the performance to highlight instrumental technique and further discuss song structure etc. In addition, musical theory and style choices are also often analyzed and discussed.
While the video does use the entire song (as things such as instrumental performance and song structure must also be considered), there are many pauses. In addition, often the parts of the original content are played multiple times to examine a particular element of the song being reacted to. During pauses, reactors go into detail on the emotions that are invoked by the song or content, and why or why not they are good, or if they’re particularly difficult. The pauses often last a long time, so much so that this video cannot be considered a replacement for the original material. A link to the original video is always placed in the about section, and viewers are encouraged to watch it without pauses and commentary.

The best reaction on Ashen, guys! It's always a pleasure to listen to you discussing HLB because imo you have a perfect taste you understand the beauty of the experi.ental music, what it consists of, you see all those layers and you approve it, you even know that it's really complicated stuff, it's an insane mixture, but still you like it! I'm saying this because I'm a newborn in metall and Instill was that guiding star to bring me here and I'm so fcking happy I gave it a chance! So I should admit that yeah actually after the first listening I was like wtf was that? It was obviously just stunning but the sound remained too messy for me. And I listened to it again and again and so on till the flower blossomed and I've heard like a completely different song, gorgeous and pretty melodic, well, within the genre of course, I knew I was dealing with metall which I hated for my whole life ngl. And then I realized that it was something a bit off the genre. Something... experimental. And omg I'm a woman of art and if there's one thing I'm really acquainted with, that would definitely be the whole experimental layer of whatever type of art it was. So it was pretty easy for me to fall in love with every new single and Ashen in general. But I've heard opinions like wtf was that what a mess why they use this why they do that and etc. And those ppl were mature metall lovers not just some randoms. They didn't get the point of experimental subgenre. Too oldschool I guess can't really blame them. And ppl that were really excited about that same Instill and the whole album appeared to be pretty new to metall as well. It's more a matter of music taste and open-mindedness in general I mean that's what exactly helps ppl to understand this new sound of HLB. Some metalheads are too conservative I assume to bear with Ashen. So once again it was such a cool reaction! I love your thoughtfulness and dope sense of humor btw) Thank you guys! You have all my respect! 🙏

Thank you so much for this. It really motivates us when we share the experience with other people, such as yourself. This album is just the embodiment of beautiful chaos and is definitely my (Sunny) AOTY, and it's not even close! If you're looking for some other albums that are life changing, here are some I would suggest...

This is heaviness on a whole new scale of Metal. It is brutal with lyrical content, tone, production, guitars, etc. it is so dynamic in all the ways I mentioned. HLB never disappoints!! 🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻 great review!

Gah this album is so heavy, and i totally agree with what you guys said at the end of this video, this is probably going to blow over some peoples heads because you have to have a certain kind of appreciation to really enjoy this music, oh well, sucks for them! This year has been amazing for music, and we got more to look forward too, like Indistinct, No Oath, TesseracT, Vildhjarta, Coldblood Supplicant, they have all hinted that they will be releasing new music soon, this is amazing :)

Absolutely stunning album. Totally agree about what you said about the sound penetrating your brain haha. If I have one criticism and it is slight, is that a lot of the nuance of the experience is lost if not wearing headphones. In the car it wasn't as fulfilling. Not sure if anyone agrees?

Guys! We're here. This is a moment in metal and in music in general. Labyrinthian was awesome, but when Instill came out... I fucking knew something was off. Linger was ok, but then Passage totally had me convinced this album was going to be like nothing else people had ever heard before. AOTY is not even a question. AOTY 2024 also, hear me now, quote me later. This was probably my 4th listen of the whole album and here's what's weird. I don't know if it's really true, but this album feels like it's mostly heavy, groovy, crooked, ominous ambiance. How is that even possible? There's very few riff riffs, but they are all absolutely devastating.
Since you guys seem to like Instill, let me sweeten the deal for ya. I'm actually Bulgarian. When I first heard the track I thought they used a sample from this choir performance.
    czcams.com/video/YwxCaJCwgr0/video.html
    (visuals are suspicious, hail riivata)
However, it's actually this one singer's layered vocals.
    czcams.com/video/M7XFyNtyk6U/video.html
She's not Bulgarian and I guess she's just singing a few misheard words, but it sounds awesome. Here's a few more examples of what this is. It's called "двуглас", which means "two voices" or "double voice".
    czcams.com/video/TeFkHvIMnig/video.html
    czcams.com/video/PU0pCQgiBmQ/video.html
    czcams.com/video/9BtYrAYzdoE/video.html
One voice is a drone, singing just a single note all the time or making small movements, while the other voice is singing a melody around the drone and there are some very close and dissonant intervals that are formed between the two. I love dissonance. I've always thought this had to have a place in metal somehow and these fuckers did it. Mad respect. A lot of Bulgarian artists have tried to incorporate our folk music into something more modern, but it's always felt awkward. People just don't seem to know what to do with it, because it's become a relic of the past and very few people are interested to learn it. Even then, most of the new output is basically just covers or different arrangements of old folk songs.
Actually, at 19:29 and 21:40, the outro of Instill, the high melody sounds a bit like Bulgarian bagpipes. I might be imagining things, but it kinda has the same vibe, right?
    czcams.com/video/z271RfrrB_k/video.html
The bagpipe also has a drone tone produced by the longer pipe that hangs down and the melody is played around it.
Also. Yeah. This album is going over a lot of metal lovers' heads. It totally is a Meshuggah scale disturbance in the metal scene. Fuck me. I can't believe HLB only have 30k subscribers to their channel after all these years. This was a lot of text for a youtube comment, but I'm hyped as fuck!
BTW, subbed til death do us part. You guys are sincere. Keep doing what you're doing.

I've just been doing the rounds to see where peoples' views on this album fell and its funny because I just came from a review where the guy talked about how this album is too compressed and the distortion clipped too much. Then you guys talk about how it might get lost on some people haha... I feel like you can't know Buster's work and ability with mixing, then listen to this and think that he doesn't know exactly how it sounds... like yeah it does sound like the distortion is... distorting in a few places (Blood Spilled, the opening track, is a good example). But we've heard so much of Buster doing amazing mixing that I have to assume that's how he wanted it to sound and its a deliberate choice to experiment with this sound... even if not, tbh I don't care - it sounds wild and I'm here for it haha. That said - I can understand why it might not be for everyone - because this album is oppressive af. Easy AOTY, hell, easily one of the best albums I've ever heard period. Days later and I still cannot get enough of it haha. Keep up the good work :)

Thank you for checking us out we appreciate it! Also I do hear that clipping that you're talking about, and it's definitely more noticeable on higher end systems, and I've said this before, that Buster is methodical with his writing and mastering, that it's hard to chalk things like that up as a mistake. Regardless, this is easily AOTY, and I can already sense that people are gonna start hating on it for ridiculous reasons.

@@SuperMetalBrosPodcasti watched so much videos of him mixing, especially on the nail the mix site, and can 100% confirm that the distortion is completely on purpose ahaha he loves his distortions, but this time he really pushed it hard on some parts to match the destruction he wanted us to feel. And to be honnest you need big balls to do that and step away from the "rules" that kinda exist in production and mixing.😅
