Last Action Hero! Arnold Schwarzenegger's best action film, because it parodies all his other action films. It's the story of young Danny Madigan getting sucked into the fictional Jack Slater films using a magic movie ticket. Agreed wholeheartedly! I watched in theaters and thought it was ok. 20 years later I watched it again and was blown away by how good this movie is.

Fun fact: Charles Dance (actor for Benedict) was hired for the role after Alan Rickman turned it down as not paying enough. Upon finding this out Mr Dance wore a t-shirt on set that read "Cheaper than Alan Rickman".
Total legend. As much as I love Alan Rickman he doesn't do simmering threat half as well as Dance - he's a tad more foppish.
Another fun fact, somehow many critics at the time didn't realise the film was a genre parody and criticised it's tone. Seriously, go and read reviews from the time for a masterclass in missing the point.
One of the weirdest Charles Dance performances is in "Space Truckers."

He was perfect in this movie. He's a great movie villain period. He would have been a good Count Dooku if Christopher Lee hadn't been available.

Back then, Arnold's line speaking to himself "you brought me nothing but pain" really hit me.
It felt like the movie makers clearly were hinting the audience at the fact that all we do is watching violence to entertain ourself and that we should be aware of it. Arnold did the same with the movie running man (like, in your face).
I love the police station scene with all the cameos... you see Sharon Stone from Basic Instinct and Robert Patrick as the T-1000 walk through the lobby,

I think a lot of people just didn't "get" this movie. It's a movie about movies, and it's one of the best, right up there with Ed Wood and The Player.
Also one of the movies where it opens to you more and more when you re-watch it. You start to see the finer nuances. Also one of the movies which entertain you in a different way depending your age. Just like Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Robocop and such.
Just like Demolition Man, it's a movie that's much smarter than it initially appears.

You guys forget that when The Rock was in the move The Rundown, Arnold did a cameo where he flat out said "Have Fun" which seems like a blessing or a passing of the torch to me. And this was right before his Bid for Governor, so it seemed like he wanted The Rock to knock em dead

If the Rock would stop making super-generic PG-13 movies, he might start climbing the ladder. He has the look and charisma, but I can't think of a single Rock movie that was in the same universe as Terminator, or Commando, or Predator.

You're forgetting the scene in (It think it was) TWINS when Arnold sees the poster for Rambo and flexes his own arm and then brushes it off as "naw, Stallones muscles aren't nearly as big as mine." hahaha
Also, on things similar to things discussed in the vid, I'm surprised that Arnie's other music video appearance in the 90's wasn't brought up. That was, of course, "You Could Be Mine" by Guns N' Roses for T2 where he, as the Terminator, determines through his tech that Axl Rose would be a waste of ammo.

I think the meaning of the film was very straight forward. It's beyond me as well..how people missed it. It's a very cool movie.

The odds of spotting a four-leaf clover are pretty darn small-about 1 in 10,000, actually. Chalk that up to the fact that the appearance of extra leaves is the result of a genetic mutation.

@@nthgth Somewhat relevant, there might have been some "fertilizer" spilled in the area she picked them. Don't ask me what might have been in their yard but I spilled a small amount of Diesel fuel on my lawn a few years ago and now that it grew back, there's purple clover in that small patch of grass and that's the only place where it is in the back yard.
The clover in their yard are likely related and carry a predisposition to having 4 leaves. That's all I got.
I had a GF that could spot them while we took walks outside. Always thought it was a weird gift lol. She could see them 8 yo 10 feet away!

I think Last Action Hero was one of the few movies which explored the self - awareness of the characters in the movie; definitely breaking through the 4th wall. It was such a refreshing point of view during the action movie era. Great review guys, well thought out.

twins :) 1 of the BEST ever comedies ...Arnie proved his versatility with that role! he was probably the only action actor of his generation/genre to be able to pull off comedy without being cheezy

I remember watching it as a kid and not liking it as much as the other Arnold movies.
The kid going to the theatre and learning about "cinematic magic" was really great too.
Also class that there was that AC/DC "Big Gun" music video tie-in with it!
It was expected to be the number one blockbuster that year with Jurassic Park a close second. In the end, Last Action Hero was too postmodern for the mass audience. It also didn’t help that it was marketed more as an action comedy than a knowing parody. At the time, both films disappointed me but I’ve revised those opinions since then.

Always fun to watch you guys on Rental Reviews. I remember seeing "The Last Action Hero" when it came out in theaters and believe it or not, I completely misinterpreted its sense of humor. I thought the film was making fun of action movie fans, just because it was so silly and over the top. I get the satire now, but man, I don't know what I was thinking that night in 1993. To add to the irony, I saw "Demolition Man" a couple of months later and loved it.

@To La The emphasis changes the point of reference for the character in a way, and that's the point.
To make it more obvious, think of it not as "Last Action Hero or Last Action Hero," but as "Last Action Hero or Last Actionhero." By changing where the emphasis lies in the phrase, it gives a different connotation to the title as a whole.
James and his friends got this, there just wasn't a good way of expressing the dichotomy in the video without going well off topic, especially since the parody nature of the subject matter means that the distinction is, in the end, irrelevant and in no way affects one's interpretation of the film itself.

oh yeah, i loved that film too. been quite a while since i watched it, but i always laugh my ass off with it.
I still remember seeing this in theatre in a theatre near Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rico and years later I heard people hating on it and wondered if they had seen the right movie. If this movie came out today I think it would be more appreciated and people might get what a parody it is. In 1993 or whatever it was people didn’t have as much insight, or at least most of us didn’t.

Really digging how you guys brought up the awesome soundtrack to this underrated flick because it reminds me of other flicks that didn't do so well at the box office that had killer soundtracks that deserve mentioning. Those soundtracks include Judgement Night, Street Fighter and Scott Pilgrim vs The World. If you haven't gave those a listen definitely do so when the time finds you. Peace!
Great review! Definitely need to revisit this film. Saw it on VHS at my cousin's house back in 1994. Also, couldn't stop watching the Japanese Spiderman in the background!!
