As a person who loves navy, I already knew about this for a couple months. Still excited about the video.
It's good against AI because they have bad light cruisers which lack of much light attack and speed. Moreover they use destroyers for screening. Destroyers are only good for torpedoes in a fleet or anti sub warfare. Maximum armor on their cruisers is often only one so Light guns 2 can easily penetrate. And some of their cruisers even use only light guns one which can't penetrate light armor 2 on your cruisers. It's also good against players if they are obsessed with capitals and don't care about screening. Maybe it would be helpful to add a bunch of cruisers with a lot of torpedoes later to sink capitals when the light attack cruisers sank the enemies screens
Wish there would be a mod which would make the Ai build better ship designs. If you want to dominate the sea in multiplayer I would recommend beginning with building fast light cruisers with tons of light attack. Speed of the whole fleet should be ~38 knots. Then add heavy cruisers or battlecruisers (battle cruisers only with heavy guns one for more speed) as fast as the light cruisers( 1 BC/CA on 5 CL). After that add some light cruisers with lots of torpedoes(1 on 1 CA/BC). If the fleet should be used far away from the coast add aircraft carriers (1 CV on 2 BC/CA). This fleet should be able to outrun everything which is to armoured to sink it after dealing huge damage to their screens. By not having destroyers in your fleet the fleet can remain small and therefore positioning is much better.
Can CL take dual purpose batteries or is that just DD's? If so, I'm curious if it's even worth it given that planes from carriers or the shore might not even matter with the current meta anyhow.
@@Sigmagnat650 Yes they can. But I would recommend only secondary dual purpose armament. Because dual purpose main battery piercing is too low. Against ships with a lot of anti air you will need a good aircraft design. You will still lose many aircrafts but I would say that it's worth it since it's cheaper to produce a ton of aircraft instead of ships

Only build subs with at least 30 and later 60 torpedo attack (insta kills convoys).
Build naval bombers to destroy the AI's navy.
Done!
(the more ships you build or research, the more you waste on things that'll get bombed by the AI)
This looks weirdly like every playthrough I do :P - Recon planes can really help with detection at sea too. Great video though, glad to see naval play getting more eyes!
yes, navy is way too fun to completely ignore it. i dread the games where players just double down on having a massive airforce to shred the navy and ignore theirs.
some armor, some detection, one torp and good high frequency light attack .. and your cruisers shred sooo much .. even in way smaller fleets than 30 40 CL .. (played iran and took on the greek, japanese, frensh and british navy with 9 CL ..without losing one ship (ofc many fights and many retreats but each fight was very costly for them)
From here on now whenever i wanna build some kind of a navy i will always do this strategy with light cruisers

i've unlocked that one achievement where as Netherlands where you have to destroy all british capitals by using only light cruisers. So yeah if even i can exploit it, it is broken.
I used Sub 3's with Sub 4 engines but this strat looks way easier. Wish I knew about it lol

My grandfather served on a light cruiser during the war (USS Oakland). IRL my understanding is that they were bristling with AA and that was their primary role
Yes LC IRL primaly was aa and as escort sometimes destroyer leader.

But I did know that they're the only ships that you can build before the war is over, and that also have enough HP that you can usually get them repaired instead of immediately-sunk 🙃
And with depth charges, light attack, and torpedoes, one ship design can counter everything, which is nice.

Every time I play hoi4 I always either struggle or am just confused with the navy and how it all works. Because of this, I've always been utilizing your strategy for the naval game which has usually been bathtub submarines or some variation of it. Next time I will have to try this out.
Surface raiding is pretty great. Subs do take a lot of time stalking and firing torpedoes- surface ships just roll up and BAM-BAM convoys get deleted.

I love navy stuff in Hoi4. I understand the Subs are meta, so thanks a lot for doing this video! Loved it! I did a germany focused on aircraft carriers myself. It wasn't broken but I did win in the end :-)
One of my favorite things to do on HOI4 to this day is rush Torpedo Cruisers as Japan and absolutely DEMOLISH the entire world's navy. They just can't deal with that much torpedoes. So satisfying.
I often go for torpedo destroyers because they're nice and cheap but I'm going to try this out too :)

This will work against AI but in MP my fleet will eat these up, the real meta is heavy cruiser with as much light attack as possible (one medium battery, rest light guns), that will kill all the enemy screens and not get killed on its own
@Лана О'нил once you kill the screens the rest of fleet goes down with it. Carriers are still the best but for countries that don't have them and have to research them it's just not worth in it in MP. I've also looked at my ships too and I've found my battleships even sinking screens too just refit the fleet (do not change armor/engine) and you can clap anyone unless they know to refit then it might be a challenge
@Лана О'нил never converted but never change engine or armor, if you, you might aswell just build it brand new, 1936 carriers are just fine and cheap to make usually takes a year to build one
Heavy cruisers with all light guns and 1 medium gun are still better than light cruisers though. They don't get targeted by screens, they dodge heavy attack, and get a 40% accuracy bonus for being fully screened, while having almost as much light attack - which is still more effective due to the 40% extra accuracy.

I like to mix in heavy cruisers so I can have a good pride of the fleet and get massive heavy attack with medium battery as well, melts the capitals and carriers even before screens are dead but it’s expensive
I just tried this build in Kaissereich as South America facing all of Europe west of Russia and Canada. I utterly crushed them with minimum losses. Thank you for this strat! (it also kind of worked in HoI2)
I recall Dave did a similar run as Japan using Torpedo light cruiser spam as well, that was fun and this is cool !
I hate naval management, so I always focus only on subs 😂
It’s painful to get a hang of it, the AI is a potato when it comes to navies, and few players want to spend time and resources on the navy.
But if you got a dedicated naval co-op vs another player who is also a dedicated naval co-op. The game gets fun as hell.
@@arkad6329 I once played as the UK in a competitive game where every US player left EXEPT the naval coop, he agreed to just solo the US and it was kinda funny because he clapped on the sea and taught me US naval meta.
As a navy freak, i can say that armor on LC is useless, without it your cruiser cost will fall of and insted of one you will be able to produce 3-4 cruisers, the speed will increas eaven more and depth chargers on raiding cruisers are just a waste of space insted of them place AA,scout planes or light guns. OFC this build needs a little bit more micro, you need to control the engagements but they will be extremly lethal
I like adding 1 torp for capital ships. That way i sunk BB and CA witch easy

I like to make 2 types of Light Cruisers.
Spotter, 2 or 3 Guns and 3 Catapult Planes set to Patrol.
Attacker, 3 Guns and 2 or 3 Torpedo set to Strike or Raid.
Works pretty good.

I always liked using no armor on cruisers, since it bumps their speed way up. In huge fleet battles (aka, versus the Royal Navy or US Navy), you may use one or two cruisers, but they sink absolutely everything (I swap the armor for medium guns. Also, I usually rush Dual Purpose Batteries and use these instead of AA. Seems to be more cost efficient, but it does hamper your tech in the early game. On the other hand, since all you need for the AI is 7-2 divisions...
If you want a little diversity, Destroyers with no armor, max engines, Dual Purpose and two torpedo tubes do quite a number on enemy capitals as well. Not sure if the no armor thing has changed, but it makes the ships faster, better evasive and cheaper to build.

Feedback you can push that soft attack even higher with improved fire control modules, a refit should take roughly one month
At the end I added them gave them +15 light attack. I ended up cutting it outta the video

You got the right idea, but light attack CAs are much better than CLs. They have 40% more targetting. Just slap them a cheap heavy gun and remove their armor, since as screened capitals they won't get hit by light attack.
Cruisers have been the meta since or shortly after MtG.
It helps that the AI doesn't acually upgrade their ships
I just played a game when Germany spammed out these cruisers. I saw his tinplate and it was nothing but dual purpose batteries. They tore apart my escort destroyer fleets. I was Canada, so I didn’t have the dockyards to keep up. But I’m just wondering, wouldn’t submarines on convoy escort counter that? Those cruisers don’t have enough ASW to fend off 1940 subs.
If you add some destroyers with max torpedoes I think it is even more efficient at destroying heavy ships.

Honestly, this game is sooo cheesable. I mean the AI will not just use hundreds of naval bombers to get rid of any CL, they will just sit there and get consumed. Let alone the fact that Germany somehow has fuel for over 60 CLs...

This is pretty close to the light cruiser setup i tend to use they are rather broken in the base game. I prefer to fit the 3 tier 3 secondaries on the ship but i never put on depth charges or spotter planes and just use radar. You can easily get 70 light attck per light cruiser.
One slot of depth charges is kinda vital to not get nuked by enemy subs though
@@MrNicoJac naw you just build a few naval bombers or tacticals. Or you can build a few destoyers with atleast 3 torp tubes and 1 depth charge i find that you want a few of those when you run into lots of captials they can run away from the light cruisers too easily.

There is actually an even better strategy then this, if you add one medium battery to the cruiser it will be counted as a heavy ship, and it will be shielded by the destroyers
