- Monterey Car Week is always full of surprises and this definitely tops off the list of experiences from 2019. The Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT is a GT1 classed race car and is only 1 of 9 in existence, this being the Krohn-Barbour Racing R-GT that raced in the 2004 American Le Mans Series. This was the first time the car has been publicly shown as well since after it completed its racing program in 2004. It was shown at The Quail among so many other hypercars it would make you dizzy. Regardless the Murcielago R-GT attracted so much attention from the die hard car enthusiasts.
Since 2004 the car was in California for a few years before ending up in Asia where the livery was removed and the car was parked not to be driven again until my friend Jordan Roddy from Bespoke Motor Cars in Australia bought the car. He meticulously went over the car visually and mechanically restoring it and ended up giving the R-GT a new life as if it were rolling out of the factory for the first time. Also the car looks identical to how it raced in 2004!
I bet this is the first time you are learning about the Murcielago R-GT GT1 race car and it is the ultimate Murcielago, sorry LP670 SV! My dream garage would consist of a R-GT, LP670 SV, and a LP640 Roadster though.

What's more raw this or the MC12 you rode in?
That's a really tough question, the MC12 Corsa is brutal and off the charts without a doubt but is nowhere near the R-GT. The R-GT is a full on GT1 race car where the Corsa although developed directly from the MC12 GT1 is a bit more 'friendly' as it's a trackday toy for the wealthy feels like it is softened up a bit where I'm sure the MC12 GT1 is on par with the R-GT GT1. The production numbers between the R-GT and MC12 Corsa are actually very very close! I'll make it a goal to get one of each together and compared side by side seeing how they are so similar in many ways.

I saw the Krohn Lambo race in person a couple times in 2004. Mid Ohio and Road Atlanta (Petit Le Mans).
Of all the V12 GTs of that era, this one sounded the best BY FAR from my vantage point. This includes Ferrari 575Ms, Maserati MC12 and Aston Martin DBR9.
The lambo just had a much fuller bodied wail to it. Super unique and I could pick that noise out from halfway around a track. Gave me chills whenever it would go by, would shoot flames out of the exhaust on overrun after a rev-matched downshift.
It was glorious. It also was horribly uncompetitive in the GTS (later called GT1) class. But that didn't stop it from becoming a personal favorite of mine just for the unique wedge shape and for having the best engine note on the track.
Hell of a ride! My long torso probably wouldn't even fit in the car.
Amazing car, was blessed with the opportunity to film it at it's only shakedown. That sound! 😱
One of my favourite Lambos and cars in general. Especially with those wheels.

I was properly strapped down and had pads, etc for protection. If you know anything about a Ferrari 333SP look at the passenger side in those or watch the video of Jeremy Clarkson driving a F1 car with no seat and see how he is protected 👍🏻

saw this car running 15 year ago during a test and tune. the gearbox was acting up so it kept popping off the rev limiter. it was the greatest thing i have ever heard.

can someone, please, explain to me the dealer plate thing ? this US stuff is confusing
A dealer plate is a special license plate usually used by car dealers for test drives it allows you to throw it on a car that isn't insured and registered and allows you to drive it because the plate has its own insurance and registration that covers the car.Im not 100%sure but it's something like that.Their not cheap or easy to get but very cool and convenient to have
Such a cool car. It is a shame that it wasn't any good when it was racing. Its just like the Zonda that raced in ALMS a year earlier, cool car but not even close to being on pace with its class.
The R-SV was competitive, probably the driver was the problem. 🤷🏻♂️
