Oxidation and Reduction Reactions - Basic Introduction

- This chemistry video tutorial provides a basic introduction into oxidation reduction reactions also known as redox reactions. This video explains how to identify the substance that is oxidized and reduced. In addition, it explains how to determine which compound or element is the reducing agent and which is the oxidizing agent. Combustion reactions and single replacement reactions are always redox reactions. Double replacement reactions such as precipitation reactions and acid base neutralization reactions are never redox reactions. Combination / Synthesis and Decomposition reactions may or may not be redox reactions.

Excuse me... but why aren't there rules for types of reactions....... like the brilliant insights you have here? Like... I feel like 90% of the confusion in chemistry is the way the text arranges their information. Like, my text intro's all of the types of reactions rather than putting them in the category of Single or Double Replacement and then getting more specific. The second you did that was the second I got it. Like dang... hours upon hours of nonsensical studying.

Thank you for teaching me how this works, and crongrats on doing it 10× better than my professor, who had 3× as much time.
Observing the change in oxidation numbers / lose or gain of electrons is so much simpler . Our teacher split it to 4 sections explaining it using gain/lose of oxygen, hydrogen, oxidation numbers ,& electrons and it just made us all confuse. This is was helpful indeed .
