I have owned a 6.4 for 10 years. Pulled a 42' fifth all over the United States, 2 fold. 260,000 miles and deleted. Will still smoke the tires down, and has never left me stranded on the side of the road. Best truck I have ever owned. If you own a diesel, you need to be putting Lucas injection cleaner in every other fill up. Half the people that bitch about these trucks never owned one or don't know how to take care of them.

Have a 09 6.4 with over 250k miles on it with zero trouble and that is with it being 100% stock, non deleted. My thoughts, these engines can be a reliable option, if you are diligent on the maintenance. I had the advantage of knowing the maintenance on my truck, oil changed every 5k with Rotella t-4 15/40 in summer 10/30 in winter, make sure to drain the fuel/water separator w/ea. oil change and change fuel filters 2x per year. Make sure to always use Ford/Motorcraft parts and filters. Treat them well and they will usually treat you well. Every person I know that has a issue with a 6.4 either had added a tuner and/or did a poor job with maintenance, or they cant verify previous owners maintenance. BTW, they made the 6.4 for 3 years, not 2. 2008, 09, 10.

In my opinion, the people who hate on the 6.4's the most are the ones who haven't owned one and haven't driven one. Of course all these are really issues, but they can be almost completely resolved with a dpf and egr delete. I have one that I bought at 150k and it currently has 200k, and has been deleted and running a spartan tuner. Most times it stays with just a 150hp tune and it will handle a 250 perfectly fine as long as I don't bang it off the limiter constantly. So basically, a tuned 6.4 is a perfectly fine motor, and tuning one is definitely cheaper than doing a engine swap to something like a 12v with wayyyyyy less performance capabilities without heavy modifications

In our Fire Department we had 3 Rescues/Ambulances that had the 6.4L that the department bought brand new and they spent most of their lives in the shop. They had issue after issue. These types of trucks are ran hard and put away wet. It’s the nature of the business and the 6.4 did not handle it well at all. Those trucks are now long gone and have since been replaced with Cummins trucks that although don’t have the get up and go like the 6.4, have had little to no trouble and it looks like the other 16 Rescues will be changed to Cummins when the time comes. (The other trucks run Detroit Diesel engines which have also had little trouble)

The odd thing is, the 6.4 fell into the Federal Purchase year of 2008. So all the Border Protection, Forestry service, all Federal agencies and branches of the military who required and used diesels were issued Ford Superduty 6.4s. The 27th Fighter wing I was assigned to had anywhere from 150 to 230 pieces of equipment that were Ford 6.4 diesels or a configuration of from 2008 to present day. I deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq and a majority of them and other equipment came with us. I think you suffered from from bad mechanics not bad 6.4s. One of my current 6.4s was a border protection truck that I bought from them only retired because they found the raptors with the suspension they have was a better truck for their terrain. Didn't mean the 6.4s didn't protect that terrain for a decade though. Properly serviced and repaired correctly they put up with far more abuse than a fire department can give them. Seen it first hand 7 tours.

I too, as many others on this posting, have a 2008 6.4 XL Crew Cab LB. I have to say that after watching videos like this one, I get worried that I may be a victim of one of these destructive motors one day. I purchased this truck with 119,000 miles on it and it now has 170,000 miles of light towing and daily driving. I had the steering box and rear main seal replaced just after buying it and haven't had any more issues there. I change the oil and fuel filers every 7,000 mile (All Motorcraft Filters) because I use Mobile 1 Full Synthetic. Over the past year, I have been running Archoil products in the fuel and oil (Archoil AR6400-D Diesel Fuel System Cleaner every 2,000 Miles, AR6500 Diesel Treatment Every Fill-Up, & AR9100 Friction Modifier in the Oil every oil change). The engine has been deleted and tuned using SCT X4 Tuning. It has a lot of power and I haven't had any engine problems as of yet. The only real issue I had was with the brakes and vibration in the bed at certain speeds because of the long bed (common issue I found in my research). I had both front calipers seize up on me and heated the rotors and bearing up so bad that I had to replace the whole hub assembly, and of course the calibers and brake pads. I love this truck and it hasn't ever left me stranded anywhere, but I worry every time I haul something. I've thought of replacing the major failure items with aftermarket Mishimoto and Sinister Diesel Products for piece of mind and extra power. It comes down to making the hard decision: 1. Get rid of the truck while it still runs and buy a 6.7 or the new Duramax 3L 6 Cyl 2. Run it till it dies and sell for parts 3. Invest in upgrading it and hope that it gives me many more years of service.

My hottest tune got me the best fuel mileage 7-800 miles per tank when empty, not driving though mountains, and not playing. The 06 Cummins we had got close on fuel mileage but only at 55-60 mph because of the axle gears matched to the g56 for most efficient driving. It was my uncles since new and ever since I was a little kid I’ve always loved his truck and loved riding in it on vacation when I’d see him lol. it’s completely stock besides new injectors(idk when exactly but it was a few years ago). All he used it for was to tow his pontoon and a couple loads every once in a while. Garage kept, oil changed religiously, waxed twice a year, and “driven 5 times a year”, the thing is in beautiful condition. Planning on a DPF and EGR delete to get her breathing right, then a fass or AirDog. It’s my daily driver and stock Egr dpf it gets about 13.5 average😭hopefully after the delete those numbers get higher. Had a code for the turbo we thought was cause the veins in the turbo were stuck cause he never drove it. Put the pedal to the floor and it went away. Super lucky to be 18 with such a beautiful truck with lots of meaning to me.

For what I have seen and experienced the emission system malfunction issues are the real killer of the 6.4L. I think a regular maintenance the EGR and a DPF cleaning would go along way to keeping these engines alive. Removing the use of over fueling cylinder 7 & 8 for the burn off cycle and switching to system like the Duramax uses would be a big improvement if that could be done. The engine it self looks to be structurally very strong. All of the past and current light and medium duty diesel engines have their own problems you just need maintain the engines and not abuse them. Boosting the horsepower of any engine generally shortens the engine life. It does the same for any gas or diesel engine.

My brother used to have an 85 (I think) F-250 XLT Lariat 2wd with a 6.9 and a 4 speed that our dad gave him. Truck was an extended cab long bed, it rode down the road like a cloud and turned like a boat. Only bad thing about a 6.9 that I can say is they have no power. Otherwise, he usually got nearly 20 mpg out of it. Plus, they sound amazing with a straight pipe.

I did have my share of issues with my first 2 6.4s then I built one my way...so far so good ... regular maintenance Water Meth injection a nice tune ...and I get an easy 19 MPG on real punch I ran her to 14.01 1/4 mile but I spun at the line...came in at 95 MPH ... Will get into the 13's next time ... didn't have any cetane so I am not sure what the cetane was ...probably low 40's ... ohh and this is in an F450 Dually Super Duty King Ranch...I have the Track tickets to prove it... I am nervous I must say to be honest ....but this can haul! Oh I did punch out the stock Turbo and put in Whicked Wheels. and a little porting on the heads! But I did add a lot of filters Like Fass Fuel Filter, Mishimoto Coolant Filter...etc etc etc.. ...Do the Maintenance and use good oil...I like the Rotella T4 for now going to the T6 after I finish the next 2 Changes....and it Passes Emissions no problem ...although we don't need to have it done anymore...!

188k on my 6.4. No issues with it. Delete and tune, do your basic maintenance and drive it like it’s supposed to be driven and you’ll be fine. Idk why these trucks get so much hate must be the high school kids beating on them to impress there friends I have had 0 problems thus far

I currently have an ‘07 Ford Ranger, but found an ‘09 f350 dually with a 6.4 Diesel engine. If I did decide to get the f350, I wasn’t gonna use it to go pullin trailers all day everyday. I was gonna use it more as an everyday driver, as some might say, a toy. Of course I would stay on top of any and all maintenance, oil changes, any flushes, fills, and the occasional car wash. Would it still be worth it?

    Don't forget,
    - Garbage valve train
    - leaky radiators
    - cracked heads
    - back two cylinders over fueling for emissions and burning a hole through the piston and or blowing a head gasket
    - water pumps that cavitate the block
and I'm sure we're still forgetting some but they are rocket ships, when they run...

The 08-10 gasoline engines in the super duties were reliable, the 5.4l 3v V8 and 6.8l 3v V10. The 08-10 Ford super duty body style in my opinion is the best looking body style. It's like older body style meets modern body style.

I had one, 99% of the issues came from exhaust gas temps and fuel/oil filtration. I fixed both of these areas and it ran great, albeit I did detune it to the same spec as the 7.3, 275hp. I liked it, but that being said I wasn't looking to build huge power with it, it was a dump truck, all it needed to do was get up to 65mph.

I traded off my 2008 6.4 because I couldn't keep a radiator in it (went thru 3). It was then sold to a construction company who is still running the wheels off it today. 15 years on that bad, bad, worthless 6.4..............
