Tip from a long term sufferer of GOUT. Treat gout as a food allergy. Keep a diary of everything you eat and identify what foods are your triggers. I found my main culprit was ''wholemeal products.'' Examples are wholemeal bread/biscuits/cookies/pasta and meat products that bulk out with bread crumbs - such as burgers and sausages. I eliminated these from my diet and have been attack free for over two years. I am no expert, just a fellow sufferer and this worked for me. Stay safe and well people.

Dehydration is my most common trigger, which no one really talks about. Advice from my doctor is to drink plenty of water to dilute and flush out the uric acid to prevent built-up. If I go through a few days when I am not drinking enough fluid, a flare up usually follows.

Good point. I don't drink a lot of pure water, mostly green tea and mint and I'm wondering if that's the root of my problems. Everybody seems to talk about sugar and that doesn't help me - I never liked anything with sugar, not a fan of fruit either.

True enough. My doctor talks about Summer being "Gout season". People don't drink enough and lose fluid through sweating. I know I'm guilty of it. My warning sign now is dark urine: When I see that it's time to drink loads of water and make sure that my Arcoxia is still in date 😉

This is informative. I'm 28-years-old and was recently told my uric acid levels are high. I'm still kind of in shock, since I've had a few blood tests over the past 2 years and only recently has this been brought to my attention. I used to have a drinking problem from Jan 2019 to June 2019, stopped drinking every day and only drank maybe once every 2 weeks, until I fully started binging in January 2020. Went to the hospital because the withdrawal symptoms were extremely terrifying. Replased again in March for a few weeks, but then I stopped drinking completely a year ago today. 1 months ago I was told of the high uric acid, so I've been trying my best to avoid seafood, mushrooms, and red meats; I've also been trying to hydrate more as well as take vitamin C supplements. Honestly, this is pretty scary.

While in the hospital being treated for suspected kidney disease and heart issues, my Dad had an extreme flare up of gout in the knees. He was so weak and the staff constantly tried to take him to physical therapy. He’d scream and howl anytime someone tried to move his legs. It was very unlike him, so I imagine the pain was unbearable. None of the doctors could correctly diagnose his pain. My Mom went home, Googled the symptoms, and came back and informed the nurses that, “Hey, I thinks it’s gout!” He was an alcoholic, smoker, and had heart disease and most likely kidney disease, but he refused the tests. It puzzles me why none of the various specialists had a clue about this. For this reason and others, he refused to go back to the hospital and spent the remaining months at home before his passing.

I'd like to offer something that has saved me a lot of discomfort for almost two years; since April 2019. This is admittedly anecdotal information, I discussed with my family doctor. His response was if I think it's helping, keep doing it. I don't drink alcohol nor do I smoke. I'm about 10 pounds overweight and 75 YOA. I'm active; fishing, kayaking, yard work and bicycling. I eat very little red meats, more chicken and occasional fish and sea food (I do live in Florida, after all). My gout usually presented in the ball of my foot.
I was diagnosed in the late 80's while still on active duty with the USAF. I was in my early 40's. I was given Indocin and took it, as needed, for occasional flairs until about 1.5 (now almost 2) years ago; so 20 years or so. My current doctor recommended I take large doses of Naproxen instead of the Indocin. In short, he explained that Indocin was bad for me but the Naproxen wasn't quite as bad. That sure made me feel good. It did work, but I still had occasional flairs if I drank too much caffeine or ate too much fried food, the two things that caused me problems. I was having a flair, enough to cause a limp, about 4-5 times a year, and an occasional achy foot at least once a month. My uric acid was always a bit high.
During a flair, I happened to see an East Indian acquaintance at his place of business (Indian Market and Restaurant). He asked about my limp and I explained. He told me about himself and his father's experience with chronic arthritis. His father, and he, used Methe (Fenugreek) seeds daily to control arthritis and said that the seeds were also effective to treat gout. I asked the obvious questions. I was somewhat familiar because my wife uses the seeds in Indian dishes. He said to eat a small amount (NFI) daily and I wouldn't have the problem. He told me to soak the seeds in water to soften them if I wished.
When I returned home, I looked them up on-line and asked about them in two health-food stores. The information was positive...”it couldn't hurt!”
For over a year (now almost 2) I've taken a rounded 1/2 teaspoon of softened (soaked) Fenugreek seeds every day (pretty much) with other meds that old men take. I've had no real attacks of gout since. Seems like I may have had an ache or two right after I started, but nothing like I had before. I have a plastic dry container (sealed), I soak the seeds overnight and, then I pour the softened seeds into a glass, and put another amount (1/2 teaspoon) into a small glass bowl with water to soak for a day. I drink the liquid and the seeds. No bad taste and my blood tests haven't changed and uric acid is in normal range.
I've passed this info to a number of gout sufferers. I don't know if the info is common knowledge, this side of India, that is, but I'm convinced! The seeds are cheap and available on-line and cheaper in Indian or Asian food stores. My doctor said he was going to research it, but never mentioned it again. I'd be interested if you've heard of it before.

Got misdiagnosed as it was arthritis and stopped working as a boiler maker. Had I had a blood test done the ph would have shown what was up. Ten years later a old doctor just looked at my swelling above the knee and asked were you jogging yesterday? He said you got gout. Prescribed colchicine and said drink more water. Oh and the don't drink coffee is bull. I drink black coffee. All day. Caffeine is a different kind of purine so is aspirin. Cola ( CokE, PEPsi) is not good, it dehydrates you. The thirst quenchers actually increases your thirst.

@ Garry Anderson. True colchicine has become extremely expensive. It used to be a cheap generic that has been around for many, many years. The FDA changed its rules so that medications that were not approved because they were around before the FDA and had been grandfathered in , had to submit for approval. Only one company did this in the US and they have exclusive use for a while. They can basically charge what they want because there is no competition. Colchicine is available in Mexico and other countries for literally pennies. This is unfortunate because it works very well for an acute flare up of gout

Had severe pain for 20yrs+ big toes, carpel tunnel, 15yrs tennis elbows and then 2yrs of 1 knee ridiculously swollen. I cut coffee out just because I was drinking a stupid amount everyday, also my son kept telling me I only 'need' coffee because I drink coffee. HE'S RIGHT!
Not sure how long it took for symptoms to disappear because I hadn't considered I was doing anything but saving some money. All symptoms completely disappeared. I have started drinking coffee again just to confirm link. It's been 9mnths and everything bar swollen knee have returned and progressively getting worse. No other diet or lifestyle changes have been made at all.

Many comments by others, but gout is mainly caused and triggered by the type of food and drinks that you consume. Change in diet will more than likely be required to stop flare ups. Or just eat and drink in moderation. In many cases there may be certain foods that trigger flare ups... ie meat, seafood, beans...etc. Sugary drinks, should be moderated (ie Soda, Beer, Wine, Sport Drinks...) Don’t need to stop cold turkey on certain food and drinks but moderate the intake. Gout can flare in any joint, such as the big toe... but it can also flare in a larger joint such as the knee which is extremely painful and debilitating.

It can take a real long time to normalize uric acid levels using allopurinol. So it’s not used for an “acute” attack. Basically it won’t make things better during acute phase. Colchicine will help acutely. Steroids more long term also but can start to help alleviate symptoms.

Taking allopurinol can make the flareup feel worse at first, which is why it is not recommended to start once the attack has started. But if you were already on it PRIOR to the attack, then you should continue. However, some rheumatologists believe that you should be on allopurinol regardless. I had an attack, was not on any meds and my doctor prescribed allopurinol, along with 3 other meds right away. It did not get better right away but instead took about 2 weeks for the pain threshold to go down from 10 to 5. You should talk to your doctor, but I like the idea of taking it regardless.

Medications exaggerate the condition . I've experimented with this 'purine' theory ,and found it has no effect on gout . I think you'd have to eat massive amounts. Branston pickle , shop bought coleslaw , and Marmite , caught me unawares and gave me unexpected attacks . I've told my doctors . Their lack of interest was not a surprise.
