Boxing made its Olympic debut at the 1904 Games in St Louis, since then boxing has been staged at each edition of the Games, except in 1912 in Stockholm, owing to Swedish law, which forbade the practice.
The rules have evolved since the 1980s: 1984 in Los Angeles: protective helmet obligatory; 1992 in Barcelona: set-up of an electronic scoring system to strengthen the objectivity of refereeing; 2007: standardised point scoring. Women's boxing made its debut at the 2012 London Games in London.

she worked so hard for this moment.. thousands of hours in the gym training and sparring.. she deserved the gold.. a true champion
I remember I was 14 when I saw this fight ( now 23). Katie was an up and coming boxer. I watched it with my dad and mam. My dad is a tough person and I've only ever seen him cry when he buried his dad. He cried floods when she won and the flag raised for Ireland. It just goes to show how much it means to a small island with so much pride.

The occasion and result FABULOUS, the fight itself, more dancing than boxing, not a great advert for womenâs boxing, but fast forward Katie Taylor is a true champion, and technician in the art of boxing.

Ian kings.., long time since your post but Iâve only just saw this âfightâ for the first time and couldnât agree more with your comments, it was just like watching two string puppets and I personally had the Russian girl edging an awful contest but no way was she going to get a decision with all the support Katie had. The difference in the fighter Taylor became is night and day to this showing.
