    00:00 Style & Combine an Overcoat Introduction
    So, basically you just put on your overcoat and you go, right? Not quite! An overcoat is an integral part of a classic gentleman's wardrobe but it requires a little bit of thought about your outfit.
    00:45 So how should you choose an overcoat for your outfit?
    As a core principle, it should ideally contrast other elements in your wardrobe. So if you have lots of dark elements in your wardrobe such as gloves, hats or pants; I suggest you go with a light overcoat. Vice versa, if you have lighter accessories and pants, a darker overcoat is better because you always want it to contrast. If you have lots of solids in your wardrobe you can either go with a solid overcoat or with a patterned overcoat. If you go for a solid I suggest to go with an interesting texture, maybe a tweed, maybe a bold weave in a solid color because that makes just all the more useful because you can combine it with different shades of colors but also more interesting and it provides a certain amount of contrast from your otherwise solid pants.
    02:19 So how do you style certain overcoat colors?
    First, let's talk about navy because I think a navy overcoat is perfect as the first overcoat in your collection because you can wear it with formal outfits. You can wear it in the evening as well as informal outfits if you choose the right texture of the fabric.
    So let's say you don't wear suits to the office. A great first overcoat would be one in a solid tan color such as the one I'm wearing here right now or in a different color. In terms of color, they go with any winter color and in general with almost any color out there.
    Now, apart from solid overcoats some of the most popular ones out there are herringbone overcoats. Herringbone is a very classic menswear pattern. It's timeless but for overcoats, you want to make sure that it's over-scaled and large, unlike with suits or sport coats where it can be smaller.
    If you're more at home in a traditional white-collar environment you want to invest in an overcoat that's either gray or charcoal or something that combines all those colors.
    09:16 Now, how do you style bolder colored overcoats?
    First of all let me say I don't think it's a wise idea to invest in a really bold overcoat in yellow, red or maybe green early on because it's just a very narrow field where you can wear it and the cost per wear will be quite high. It's also quite a statement piece and because of that, I think it's only suited to someone who really knows what they're doing and who has an advance closets where all the basics are already covered.
    Now overcoats are not cheap and most men have just one or two. In order to not keep it boring and to create different looks, I suggest really pay attention to your accessories.

      Tip 2: when walking in snow make sure you lift your foot over the snow to prevent snow build up on the shoe because snow doesn't get your feet wet, snow stuck to your shoe that melt from the het of you foot wet you feet
      Tip 3: when you get to a part with sallower snow tap the tip of the shoe on the ground to get of the snow bulid up

    This question is off topic. For the last week I've watched perhaps 20 of your videos for the purpose of gaining insight/direction in shopping for my sons-in-law and grandson (almost 8 years old). I need to select a tie to complement a Black Watch Tartan dress shirt which I bought at Christmas for one of my sons-in-law - it'll be a birthday present for him. Should I stick with a solid color tie? I was looking at your Fort Belvedere silk knit ties and thought a medium blue or green would suit his casual style; he wears a uniform at work (pilot) and has no need of nor interest in dressing as dapper gentleman. I'd like him to have options for church, though, and I'd appreciate your guidance.

    Is interesting I can't seem to find a video on what does a gentleman use to keep his ears covered and warm on a -20 Celsius cold day/night, and keep the ears intact and unfrozen, without ultimately having them fall off after spending 8 our work day at such cold weather. the thing is I have to attend formal occasions even though the weather is really cold, which are usually held outside.

  • @christopherlagasse5363
    @christopherlagasse5363 Před 6 lety +3

    I liked the video. My only problem was this: "it's not something elegant men would've worn 100 years ago. Stylish men back then and today would wear different colors". These statements are difficult to prove. And also seeing as though gloves are a more minor part of a man's wardrobe, a man who chooses not to pay much attention to his gloves can still be very stylish in my opinion.

      I been looking for a new overcoat this year and the choices I seen in all the shops have been plain awful. We had way too skinny lapels, sewn in bibs, ultra short coats, and for the most part rather thin wool. It been quite disappointing. Hopefully next year they will return to a more classic style that doesn't look like the geeky picked on brother of the late 80s fashion.

    Sven, what headdress would you suggest to wear with a formal overcoat if it’s -20°C outside? Fedora and flat cap doesn’t close the ears, so it’s not suitable.

    • @gentlemansgazette
      @gentlemansgazette  Před 6 lety +2

      It all depends on how long you stay outside. It gets colder than -20°C where I live and dropping off my daughter at daycare by foot doesn't require me to get anything other than a fedora or a flat cap. A beanie would keep you warmer, but I do not like the look. Fur or ear muffs, you have to figure out what works for you.

    • @MiniPaintAdventurer
      @MiniPaintAdventurer Před 6 lety +2

      Make sure you are getting a thick felt fedora and not one of those cheapy ones. Also you can combine it with earmuffs that go around the back of your head instead of over. There are even fedoras that have ear protection built in.
