To me I think a cinema cam needs:
1. Timecode support
2. Pro internal codecs
3. pro monitoring tools (false color, gioscope, el zone, waveform, etc)
4. shutter angle
5. offspeed frame rates like 48fps
6. log or raw recording
7. not micro hdmi lol
8. not pixel binned/line skipped
To be fair Josh all I predicted was you'd get a komodo and then get rid of it immediately lol. Great podcast!
yes
TIMECODE! I forgot to mention timecode. Good call Tyler. Thanks for watching.
I’ve got a RED One from 2007. Maybe I can tell potential clients that I’ve got a RED! I’ll shoot with my FX3, but you I do technically have a RED 😉
Hahahah yeah Tom I think "technically" you can say "Shot on RED" now:)
Nice work guys, loving the podcast! These days it seams like the mirrorless cameras are becoming so powerful the need for cinema cameras are becoming less and less... I wonder how long before they will just be in the rental camera category for serious film making only??
Jason! Thanks so much man. Stoked to have you here:) It's progressing so fast.
Wait Brandon, you did a doc in HB? That’s my hood! Haha
You're in HB!? Ah man. I'll be back there son man I'll hit you up!
Just the name of the channel deserves a subscribe. great content. Thanks for doing this.
Glad you enjoy it! Happy to have you Mike
the best part about having 10bit and a log profile is the ability to color grade..grading is fun...for me that is the bottom end..internal ND filter, 6k-8k, 17 stops of dynamic range are a bonus if you have the $70k to drop on a Red...but at least 10bit and a log profile is about 90% of the way there..
A RED is no where near $70k. It's not even $35k built out.
my wife said I dont need a cinema camera so there I have my answer - I told her about shutter angle , false color and wave forms but she still said no
This is why I don't ask my wife.
I also want to add, I think a Cinema Camera, is a camera that can realistically be used to create content for the Cinema. People hate on the FX30 for it being a "cinema camera" but if that camera is used as a crash cam for the higher end sony cameras then the footage could be used in a project made for the cinema. Just my 2 cents
Thanks for watching man!
Global Shutter is pretty cool if you ask me otherwise there are movies out there like "The possession of hannah grace" that were shot on the A7SII and look gorgeous. i personally think its possible to shoot good stuff with pretty much all cameras that are out there now if the glass is good and lighting + cinematography are good. dont forget that a lot of good movies were shot with crap in the past and were hugely famous because the storytelling was on point. peace out a town
Love the global shutter!
Great to see you calling out the "no money changed hands,I just accepted a free 5 day trip to Japan for myself and one other all expenses paid, ps the camera is absolutely amazing and far better than x or y and nobody told me to said that" I love that Panasonic have discovered phase detect ten years late. They sat back and watched Sony go from joke to market leader and think people will junk their lenses and switch to a camera that just has an OK focus system . It won't matter if they do match Sony , no one will switch and they'll always be selling on price.
Perfect topic
Glad to have you bud. Always nice to see awesome creators on here.
YES YES YES YES R5 ...woohooo alright now that I got that out looking forward to new firmware and healthy discussions about it. I love my R5 but to be honest I use my R6 Mk2 more. Only use the R5 when I need more pix and reach or when I need 8K for wildlife videos or moon videos :)
Yeah I'm really excited to see what this update brings!
This was great to watch/listen to while I built out my FX3 rig for the last leg of this shoot with Levi. You fellas mention ND with cinema cameras (especially the ones where it's built-in). Levi has the PolarPro clip-on matte box with the 2-5 Mist variable ND square filter and let me tell you it...is...AWESOME. No built-in ND was my biggest concern with doc shooting on the FX3 but that Polar Pro matte box with ND took all those concerns away. Such a great accessory. One negative? You have to be careful with how far you push the ND because it can get messed up (whereas it can't with built-in ND on the FX6 or C300 MkII). Thanks for keeping me company in the hotel room while I built the rig!
I definitely am
Going to talk to you about the PolarPro base camp system.
IMO "cinema camera" more than anything means long-form reliability. Robustness of build, stout duty cycles. Basically, something made for production, not hobby. Feature sets are secondary to reliability and predictability. Film production at all levels cost a LOT of money...the camera needs to be known and needs to work.
Probably why Arri is on so many productions, that shit never fails
blessings!

If canon increased the pixels on the C70 just so you can still shoot Horizontal and crop in in post for vertical content it would be even better.
I think Black Magics next camera will probably be one of the best ones in the marker. With how they won on the compression with REDs patent I think they will kill it on their next cinema camera
“The shot on red” matters if you are going to rent the camera or sell stock footage in my experience my Red V raptor has been rented out few times already because of the vv sensor and frame rate option + codec
This my favorite show so far.
That's awesome Joe! Thanks for watching.
I'm your 600th subscriber :) great watch, may I ask what platform do you use for your video calling for recording the show?
Thank you so so much for joining! We just finished a new episode discussing this entire process!
@@16Stops sweet look forward to it :)
Great conversation. No mention of Blackmagic products (pocket 6k, URSA Mini, URSA 12K)?
We definitely mentioned black magic a few times but towards the end we talked about them quite a bit
Great episode guys! Really enjoyed it!
Thank you!
Do you guys feel camera companies using ‘ cinema ’ too loosely now? Think fx30/3 canon R5C compare to fx6/9 and C70 etc
That is a fantastic question
So here’s my take… video-centric in terms of hardware and/or software and has at least a m4/3 sensor. It’s a broad definition, but I think it has to be.
Anyway, great show. I look forward to it every week
zve 10?
@@MiguelBorgesphotography sticking a wind muff on an a6300 and calling it a vlogging camera doesn’t meet my criteria
Thanks for watching Mikey!
@@mikeyhughessays But it could. Videocentric. At least an m4/3 sensor. It's a broad definition, but I think it has to be.
I own 2x canon c100 mark II for wedding and I love this cameras I think still prefer over c70 because of the evf, I also own red v Raptor and Komodo for all the rest of the job (features films , commercial where there is a budget paired with tokina vista glasses) I have just bought RF 24/70 2.8 IS that I’m using with the Red system for now and later will upgrade the canon’s with whatever comes up in the future, right tools for the job
Those Tokina Vista's sure are beautiful! Those RF lenses are awesome on both the C70 and the komodo though. I have the 15-35 and I use it all the time on mine.
@@16Stops yes 15-35 its on my radar too IS its a great plus for video run and gun on this Red Cameras
Love the podcast. But just a quick correction. The FX6 did have a very good firmware update offering such things as 'touch tracking autofocus' (touch anything on the screen and the camera will track it and keep it in focus), cache recording (even in high frame rates like 120fps) where it will record up to 31 seconds BEFORE you hit record as well as focus breathing compensation and 'bokeh pull'. It was such a big upgrade that Philip Bloom did a 40 minute entire new video on the FX6 after the firmware update came out, even though he had already done a 42 minute review of it earlier. Because as he said, it made it a whole new camera. Which goes to prove, Sony CAN come up with nice new firmware upgrades if they want. If you are interested, the video he did for the firmware update is here:
czcams.com/video/Vy0LwZqsAws/video.html
For a little shorter version, Doug Jensen (who makes the 8-9 hour Master class training video for the FX6) also did a very good video, (which is about 12 minutes long) on all the new features in the FX6 firmware upgrade here:
czcams.com/video/VSsPs49dRuo/video.html
Just wanting to point this out......as an FX6 owner I feel it was definitely improved greatly with the firmware upgrade.
Thanks for the Correction. That is quite a big update.
@@16Stops keep the podcasts coming! Really like all of them so far!!
What's your take? What makes a Cinema Camera? And Who NEEDS one? Do CZcamsrs need them or no?
Wish you would have mentioned Fuji XH2 s
Making a vlogging camera without ibis is as sensical as going to McDonald's for a salad. Catalyst Browse is garbage and not a replacement for hardware IBIS.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
Hahahaha It was a lovely Ted Talk, and I totally agree.
I must say, the audio and visual of both your set ups is very pleasing. I have C70's and an R5c. I've seen enough compare videos to think they hold up to most anything and are far better than most. The hassles with shooting the Komodo don't out way the end product. And just the thought of possible camera damage from "how" you turn your camera on is nuts. With the long boot up times I can see forgetting the sequence... I'm sensing a better Canon Box style mini-cine coming out that's gonna kick doors open. I wouldn't be surprised if Canon bought RED down the road and became the Super Brand.
Great show fellas.
Scottie thanks for saying hi and weighing in. Such great cameras. And man Canon buying RED would be intense.
I’ve use Sony and canon autofocus also, they’re not perfect either. You can’t rely on autofocus 100% when it comes to vlogging, documentary and filmmaking.
Very true!
Hot off the presses, DPReview is kill. Amazon, their parent org, decided to pull the plug. RIP Chris and Jordan. Hope they can snag the channel
Saw the news this morning. It's a blow to the community for sure.
If you don't use the S5II you can send it to me... I'll send you an original S5 in return.. :D
Even some of the really big CZcamsrs don't need RED cameras but they own them. Would I buy a RED if I was a big channel sure why not a new toy too play with.
You’ve literally got “big” in your channel name. Haha:)
@@16Stops LOL I'm a fan of Rusty the Robot the old cartoon. The robots name is Big Guy. LOL
The term “cinema camera” in my opinions has become totally obsolete, it’s now a marketing term that camera manufacturers use to sell cameras. I’m of the opinion that a “true” cinema camera is something like the arri Alexa mini, LF, 35, Sony Venice, Red V raptor etc. Cameras that are used by the big dogs on big movies, tv series, music videos and commercials. Those cameras to me scream cinema camera. Cameras such as the fx3, fx6, c70 and red Komodo are cameras that have blurred the lines, they are capable of producing images close to the level above and are now at an accessible price for most pros. However they wouldn’t be seen anywhere near a big production unless it’s as a crash cam. So to me the term cinema camera really means cameras like Arri, Red, Sony Venice and the c70, Komodo, fx6 etc are really pro video cameras. But hey it’s 2023 so I think they can be called whatever the want to be now 😅
I'd concur with just about everything you said. Well Said. I do know the komodo is being used a lot on the big budget movies more than just as a crash cam, but They're not being used as the A cam so I'd still agree with what you're saying.
Does the world really need 65 minutes asking this question? Is the answer 'it depends'? 🙂
