Pitch Black was a movie about opposites. When it gets dark everything that was in the light gets reversed. The man with children has none. The hero is a drug addict, the villain is the hero. The boy is a girl. The pilot who was willing to kill everyone to save herself, sacrifices herself to save everyone.
My friend’s mom worked with Vin Diesel at a gas station years before he was famous. His name was Mark and one day he came into the store, told them he was moving to Hollywood and changing his name to Vin Diesel, and that he was gonna be a famous actor. They supported his decision but they obviously didn’t believe it would actually happen. And now he’s one of the most famous actors on the entire planet.
He needs to make more Riddick video games and use stealth and dark to brutally silent kill… I bet that would be a good video game since Vin is a gamer and nerd at heart, so his last game was awesome
And you are shown that actually he is incredibly dangerous criminal. Very soon you realise that all these people are only alive because they pose no threat to Riddick. And if he needs it he could kill any of them easily.
Also the film has great character acting all around. Can we give Cole Hauser and Keith David a shout? The entire cast pretty much plays to their type wonderfully.
Pitch Black is one of the rarest cases where Horror, Mystery, Action, Adventure and Sci-fi ALL combined into one that works! One of the best original films at the time. Shame we did not see any continuation of Riddick.
@@szeltovivarsydroxan9944 It doesn't exist to me. And that third movie was pretty much a poor retread of Pitch Black. Second movie was pretty good though.
I love this movie. The scene where Riddick studies the fossils of an alien to discover a blind spot helped give him a clever vibe. Also in addition to his crazy eye sight, he also has insane smelling if he noticed Jack's period.
“You see anything out there?” Riddick: “Looks clear.” *Guy gets attacked by a demon* “WHAT THE HELL MAN I THOUGHT YOU SAID IT WAS CLEAR” “I said it looks clear.” “Well what’s it look like now?” Riddick: *Looks over the hill* “Looks clear.” One of my favorite dialogue exchanges in any movie
The thing I always loved about the Riddick movies is that he has this reputation as a crazy villain but throughout the movies he's shown to be a very reasonable person who is just used to doing whatever it takes to survive.
True story. My brother and I went to see Pitch Black when it first came out. Like 15 mins into the movie the screen fades to black but we could still hear the audio. 2 minutes into that we start to realize that it wasn’t part of the movie. Best thing of this movie, and others like it, is the fact that you never know who is gonna live or die, including the main characters. This uncertainty peaks the interest and curiosity of audiences, and I believe it's one of the reasons of a movie's success.
David Twohy was a childhood friend of my dad’s, and they still keep in touch to this day. Vin was so perfect in this movie! He was never able to find a better role and it kind of held him back. Totally holds up because of the great artstyle they filmed with.
You forgot to mention the legendary Keith David playing the Iman. This movie is so awesome. I forget her name, but the lead hero, Cole Hauser (now in Yellowstone) as Janz, the whole cast actually does quite well. It really is a charming, well thought out movie and it is easily my favorite Vin Diesel movie.
Radha Mitchell is the lead! She's in a whole lot of great little horror movies like Silent Hill, The Crazies and Rogue (which is a great giant crocodile creature feature from Australia :) )
Not only is the character Riddick and the films awesome but the game, "Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay" was an absolute banger. It wasn't a huge known title but man was it one hell of a great game. And to make it even better, Vin did the voice for the character.

My dad told me at the end of the week it was time to go back to the video store to return all the tapes we rented. Out of all the details you mentioned, the idea of explaining how the monsters aren't just "evil towards our heroes" or "towards humans" but also cannibalize each other, is actually really interesting! Sells them as an indiscriminate force of nature.
All things you said, I 100% agree with, but what has always made Pitch Black one of my favorites of all time is the pure chemistry both Radha and Diesel bring to their characters. There is so much tension between both the characters, it absolutely MAKES it for me.
Its hilarious to me that Vin wanted the rights for this franchise and Universal said no. Then, Universal wanted Vin Diesel so desperately back for a cameo in fast and Furious Tokyo Drift and for a 4th fast and furious and he said "You know what i want"
Little disappointed Chris didn't spend a couple minutes on the other characters. The cop w/ a habit, the out of her depth protagonist, Keith Frigging David for goodness sakes, they contributed to the characterization of Riddick. That ending was gut wrenching.
The creatures, called bioraptors, obsessed me when I saw the movie as a teen. Such a cool and fearsome look they had ! They were designed by the one and only Patrick Tatopoulos who designed so many iconic movie monsters !
I absolutely love this movie and franchise. The Chronicles of Riddick is what I got onto first. It was a pretty fun movie as a kid but I didn’t know much about it. I then saw Pitch Black a few years after and REALLY liked it. Then in 2013 Riddick is what got me on and I just watched the movies ever since. They are fun movies. I really want another one to come out.
It was absolutely an underdog movie. It was a February movie, the type that the trailer only started popping up on tv 2 weeks before it released. It was absolutely worth watching it in a theater. For context, the Matrix had just blown up the summer before, so it was probably a blessing that Pitch Black got held to February.
I saw this movie in the theater with my dad when I was 12. I remember feeling like we were being blinded because it was so bright in the beginning. What an experience. It ended up being one of our all time favorite movies and such a special memory for me❤️
This is one of the best. Nostalgia may play a roll. I was in love with this entire series. Can’t wait for them to build up on what they’ve done. I wonder how many more riddicks are left? Wrinkle riddick let’s go!
Pitch Black was one of my favourite horror movies growing up. I'm so glad to see you review it. Next do Event Horizon, and do your best impression of "Where We're Going, We Won't Need Eyes To See!" :D
One visual I want to highlight is the brief renaissance painting that was the "I was supposed to die it France." scene where it's revealed he was surrounded the entire time. That was a masterclass in revealing the monster, its scary stealth abilities and en masse, as well as the visual itself which could've been painting on a cathedral ceiling on some other planet.
One of my favorite parts of the movie is Riddicks talk with the holy man about God and hating him and Riddick not understanding how this man can still have faith after the kids he came with died yet towards the end of the film when Riddick has a change of heart and goes back to save the holy man and jack the holy man says “That is my God Mr Riddick”
Great review Chris, this was a fun one to watch. By chance, if you're taking any potential Halloween suggestions - I'd love to recommend "Wait Until Dark." I am not sure if you've seen this movie, but I think it would be a fun one to review that is not quite like other Halloween themed movies you usually review. Just including Audrey Hepburn in a movie review of yours I think would be spectacular! Anyway, just a suggestion from a fan of yours. Keep it up with the special!
Saw this movie as a teenager and loved every minute of it! Rewatched it many times since. It hits all the right beats of horror, sci-fi and action. The second one gets a lot of negative reviews but I really love how it expanded the universe. The third one was accused of being a rehash of the first but hey, it was still great fun - and, it had Katie Sackhoff!
I love Pitch Black. The way they did his eyes and the backstory around them was cool and added a nice little detail, which other filmmakers might not have included. It's also got Keith David in it, enough said.
My brother that passed away used to LOVE this movie. i remember him showing it to me and telling me how cool Vin Diesel was. I sometimes watch it on his anniversary. It’s nice to see that other people like it too, and it’s not just nostalgia for me. :)
I watched it at the $1 theater and was very impressed! It was tense, you didn't know who would survive, twists, great creatures, Vin Diesel, and a great story.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! one of my childhood favorites. The eclipse scene, when all the monsters comes out, is one of my favourite in Sci-fi. If only the other stuff in the franchise have been on the same level. Let's hope for another proper Riddick movie in the future, maybe Fury Road-style? i can only hope.
Ooh, kind of an unusual pick for Halloween films, but very much appreciated! Also, I love your comparison to this with Silence of the Lambs. Never thought of it that way before, but it makes sense.
I love this movie! It holds up well, and the effects are great given the lower budget. Chronicles of Riddick was an ambitious sequel, but would have worked better as a standalone film. The third movie was a letdown. I was hoping for more of the Chronicles storyline. This was like the Alien franchise with a solid first movie, a sequel that expanded the universe of the story, and a third movie that pulled it back into a claustrophobic retread of the first movie.
Film is a great example of Ebert’s line, “It ain’t what it’s about it’s how it’s about it,” We’ve seen this kind of movie a million times before - but through strong characters, well written dynamics between them, & snappy pacing, it’s an engaging movie.
"He did not know who he was fuckin with" My favorite line from that film. After you watched Pitch Black and Saving Private Ryan you just knew Vin Diesel would be a star. You just wanted to see more and more of that guy on screen. Pitch Black has always been one of my favorite films. I'm shocked more people haven't seen it.
I will always remember that image of the gas giant moving in front of the sun, bringing about the endless night. Because there are definitely places out there somewhere where you can see that exact same view.
My favorite thing about Riddick is the tapetum lucidum they gave him, the reflective eyes. Imho It's a stroke of genius, making him look both scary and cool.
This turned out to be way more than just another sci-fi horror thriller. It has great character arcs and twists. The movie is half over before you even realize who the main characters are and who you should be rooting for
Pitch Black was one of the first rated R films I saw as a kid. I don’t personally believe it’s aged very well but it is certainly very special for it’s time. And I’ll readily admit that it was my first ‘alien’ experience.
I had no idea who Vin Diesel was when I first saw this movie. I always try to put myself in that mindset when I rewatch it. He truly seemed scary with that voice and the way he was hidden in the shadows.
Your point about the lore/biology of the animals is exactly why I loved this movie, and other movies that do the same thing. It doesn't have to be a in-your-face exposition, but it should be there.
At the start, I see Pitch Black right next to Tremors. I used to watch Tremors with my brother a lot because it was on cable all the time. I watched it again last week because I hadn't seen it in years, and it holds up so well that I had to watch it a few times. It's so well-written, and the characters are fun and endearing. On the other hand, I've never seen Halloween, so maybe this is the year to fix that.
Hey Chris I hope you see this because 5 years ago tomorrow was the first time i ever watched one of your videos and made me laugh my head of and you got me and I’m sure a fuck tone of others through a lot of shit with your hilariocitys and just thank you so much man.Happy Halloween (in 20 days).
This is one of my favorite franchise of all time. Between the movies and games there is still so much untapped potential. Yes its a big ego stroking passion projects by Vin but I appreciate how unforgiving and creative it is.
I haven’t seen Pitch Black in a minute. I think out of all three movies, Riddrick is my favorite and turned me around on this franchise. Vin Diesel been teasing a new movie is in the works.
I rewatched all three Riddick movies earlier this year. I love all three of them. Pitch black is definitely the best, but I have a soft spot for chronicles
I was around 15 when I saw this movie in theaters, and the xenobiologist in me has always wondered how this situation on the planet came to be. The Darkons (my nickname for these things, based on an alien from the Men in Black animated series) can be seriously injured and even killed by something as mundane as a flashlight, yet live in the cave systems of a world with 3 suns that almost never experiences a period of night time. Furthermore this planet is totally barren, BUT the skeletal remains of indigenous life forms can be found in the desert sands, suggesting recent habitation. This leads me to believe the Darkons are an invasive species, brought to this world relatively recently, possibly for research as a biological weapon like the xenomorphs from the Aliens franchise. Perhaps it was thought that since this planet had no night time they would remain in whatever containment was set up, but the eclipse event allowed them to run havok and destroy whatever native life lived there. Such ravenous and effective hunters simply overwhelmed the native life the same way dogs and rats did to various island species like the Dodo or Stilt Legged Owl. I speculate this because if they were actually native to this world then the other life forms would be acclimated to them, perhaps with bio-luminescence (like the darkon's larva) or some other defense mechanism.
For me as a kid, this was one of those movies you watch every single day for a month. it still holds a special place in my mind along with both of the Ace Ventura movies. I knew all the lines in those movies and was probably awfully annoying with how much I used to say "aaaaaaallrighty then"
The chronicles of RIDDICK was one of the first movie that got me into science fiction overall, it and pitch black really sucked me into the story and world unlike any other movie i saw before it. I hope we get a new RIDDICK movie
One of my favorite movies and it was filmed outside my hometown coober pedy the ship that the characters crash lands in is in the middle of town and still there to this day but it's sadly withered away from being outside
Chris doesn't mention it but the sound in this movie is intriguing and really adds to the atmosphere. Strange atmospheric sounds in the background you don't hear in other movies that make this one stand out for me.
For some reason, I love David Twohy sci-fi films. The Arrival is great, and Pitch Black will always be fun. However, The Chronicles of Riddick will *always* be a favorite. Love it.
The first time I watched this movie was at home in the evening. Funny thing is the dusk and night was synchronized with the movie, so it was a perfect ambient for the movie. A whole experience.
Thanks for the Vid! Remember going to see it when it came out and raving about it! The Sequels aren't half bad too, especially Riddick, probably a tad underrated trilogy 😮
Surprisingly, the two Riddick video games are fantastic. They respect the source material and expand the Riddick lore. It’s too bad they are not available in current generation consoles.

It ended up being one of our all time favorite movies and such a special memory for me❤️
Who else loves Chris’s laugh? It’s my favorite part of his reviews😄
Having reviewes on older movies is so nice to have.
One of my favorites. Loved when they put out the 4k.
This one is at the top of my Best First 10 Minutes list. The ramping up of the tension leading up to the crash is superb!
Love your reviews and can’t wait for Shelby Oaks. I would love to see you review Session #9 .
Saw this opening weekend, still one of my favorite movies of all time!
Great pick Chris. Saw this in the theater during its original release. Still love it.
I love all these movies! Can’t wait for the next one
If they ever make it. Vin always just seems to focus on F&F.
It's already in production@@loventheclub2346
such a great film, it knew what it was and didn't give any less. The 4k bluray also looks incredible!
My brother that passed away used to LOVE this movie. i remember him showing it to me and telling me how cool Vin Diesel was. I sometimes watch it on his anniversary. It’s nice to see that other people like it too, and it’s not just nostalgia for me. :)
My little sister and I saw this at the movies. Once we got past the silliness of the crash, we were all in. One of my faves
Love this movie and love that you spent time to make this video 🙂 this has always been one of my underrated favorite sci-fi horror movies 🤘🕷️💀
I watched it at the $1 theater and was very impressed! It was tense, you didn't know who would survive, twists, great creatures, Vin Diesel, and a great story.
I would love to see you rewatch and review more movies from the late 90s early 2000s
My friend and I have the running gag that Pitch Black and Ninja Assassin are the best movies ever made. We forgot how that gag even started.
Was actually thinking about this one yesterday and how I need to rewatch it . Thanks Chris for reconfirming that I need to now lol
Now we need a Chronicles of Riddick review. Loved that movie.
Film is a great example of Ebert’s line, “It ain’t what it’s about it’s how it’s about it,”
We’ve seen this kind of movie a million times before - but through strong characters, well written dynamics between them, & snappy pacing, it’s an engaging movie.
"He did not know who he was fuckin with"
My favorite line from that film.
Of the three, The Chronicles of Riddick is my personal favorite. It's sort of my guilty pleasure film.
A pitch black review?! It’s a good birthday
The timing on this one, I’ve been wanting to rewatch the riddick movies lately!
I seen this movie when it came out and loved it ever since. The second and third movie were just icing on the cake.
Hey Chris you ever think about reviewing Banjo Kazooie? Would be a fun Halloween or Fall review!! Definitely recognize that opening ambience
Charlie sheen's The Arrival is nothing short of Masterpiece. Its more scary than alot of horror movies.
This still one of my go to favorites for rewatching!
Love it.
One of my personal favorites.
Also one off the most underrated games off all time in my opinion. Both the first game and sequel
The first time I watched this movie was at home in the evening. Funny thing is the dusk and night was synchronized with the movie, so it was a perfect ambient for the movie. A whole experience.
Pitch Black is my 2nd favorite Vin Diesel film behind Saving Private Ryan.
Thanks for the Vid! Remember going to see it when it came out and raving about it! The Sequels aren't half bad too, especially Riddick, probably a tad underrated trilogy 😮
Looking forward to your review of "Decision to leave".
Surprisingly, the two Riddick video games are fantastic. They respect the source material and expand the Riddick lore. It’s too bad they are not available in current generation consoles.
Pitch Black was so great and Riddick is one of my favorite characters and easily Vin Diesels best! Thank you for great reminder video!
