Unlocking the New Testament Part 13 - Galatians 1

  • David Pawson says of Galatians, that it is the Magna Carta of Christian Liberty. It wrestles with issues caused by the differences between Judaism and Christianity in the early church. It came to a head with the issue of whether a person is saved by faith or by works. The Judaisers were saying that they needed to start with faith and then go on to keep the Law. So Paul asked the Galatians: having started in the Spirit, are you going to continue in the flesh? Paul was fighting for ‘faith alone’ as the means of salvation. He emphasized the need to ‘go on believing’. David says to introduce the Law at any stage is to put believers under a curse because the only pass mark Jesus would accept for the Law is 100%. Galatians explains why God gave the Law. In speaking on the 3 themes of the book, David says that Legalism is an enemy of Liberty but what people don’t always realize is that License is too. It is a delicate edge we walk in the Liberty of the Spirit. It’s so easy to slip either into Legalism or into License. Real freedom is the freedom not to sin.

David Pawson says from 2:10 onwards that John Wesley felt his heart strangely warmed when someone was reading Luther's commentary on Galatians. We always believed that it was the reading of Luther's preface to ROMANS that JW felt his heart strangely warmed. In fact, we read in JW's journal, "In the evening I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate Street, where one was reading Luther’s preface to the Epistle to the Romans. About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone, for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death."

      Hi Satish
I have looked further into this and sought the advice of a member of our team who studied at the London Bible School. I am informed that there is evidence both Charles and John Wesley were impacted by Luthers commentary of Galatians. There is testimony that Charles Wesley's conversion in particular was linked to the reading of Luthers commentary on Galatians, just 3 days before his brother John's Aldersgate experience.
I also understand there is an academic paper that questioned whether what was read at Aldersgate was in fact Luthers commentary on Galatians and not, as generally indicated in his journals, the commentary on Romans. What is certain is that both John and Charles were impacted by Luthers Commentaries .
Following on in both his Fathers and Grandfathers footsteps David was well versed in the Wesley brothers

David recorded many series on the 4 key steps to becoming a Christian
Firstly whilst we were still sinners Christ died for us and paid the price for our sins - he did everything required for us to be reconciled with God
But we have a part to play in response
The book of Acts teaches there are 4 key steps, Sometimes all 4 steps are recorded, other times the writer focusses on one specific step to emphasise a key step but all 4 are covered in the Book of Acts
Repent, believe, be baptised in water , receive the Holy Spirit
"Repentance and Water Baptism are for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the Holy Spirit ...... Acts 2:36

Hi Monica if you can give me the timing reference I can comment more accurately, but if it is the reference to the Church in Corinth then their church meetings had got a bit out of control
with everyone speaking in other languages with no interpretation.
      tongues
      tonguesgift
thelanguagesongues, when here is no interpretation only benefits the person praying. In fact displaying the gift of tongues in public without interpretation can do more harm than good as it potentially creates confusion and division, ie those who can speak in tongues and those who cannot. In contrast the use of prophecy provides the opportunity for unbelievers to hear from GOD , to be convicted of sin and come to faith in Christ and genuine worship.
Gift of the Holy Spirit were given for the edification of others not oneself and if an unbeliever is present when someone speaks in tongues with no interpretation - it just emphasises different and is of not blessing to the unbeliever present, nor other believers unless it is interpreted, Tongues that are not interpreted can only benefits oneself.

I like Pawson but he has this habit of miss quoting scripture and just drops it in loosely. At about 9 mins 20 he just drops in the sabbath calling it secondary and makes the first thing God personally claimed for himself in scripture seem like a common thing. Something jesus claimed to be lord of. Scripture says do not call my ways a common thing.
The verse he quotes saying Paul says Sunday. A subtle change it would seem. Be careful if this type of thing. If you know your bible you would know Paul doesn't speak of the name of the day but says the sabbath. I believe Pawson is quoting Colossians 2:16 Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day- it doesn't say Sunday as he should fully know, the sabbath that was kept by Jesus, as was his tradition. Jesus the one we are to follow (not preachers), also Paul, the new church kept the sabbath. Doesn't he know the Sabbath has always been on God's appointed day - Saturday. Which we here in Scotland kept until around 1100 a.d.
We need to ask ourselves who are these people who are judging new converts? We can't just assume they must be Jews. The church of Colossi is in Turkey!
So investigate Colossians 2 to find out more, don't just assume anything with the bible.
Colossians 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the TRADITIONS OF MEN, according to the ELEMENTARY principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. - EXACTLY WHAT PAWSON IS DOING HERE.
Ask yourself this, is the Sabbath (Saturday) a tradition of men. Dare we call God's ways common?
These people who are judging them delight in self abasement and worship angels (satanic worship) according to verse 19. Does that sound like the Jews? Doesn't Paul say there is benefit in being a Jew as they are entrusted with the words of God. I've never heard of practising Jews involved in self abasement or worshipping angels
So if the judgers were actually locals who were pagans possibly Muslim then Paul's telling them not to allow them to judge them for keeping the apponted sabbaths and feasts of God.
ASSUME NOTHING EVEN IF A CONFIDENT MAN LIKE PAWSON TELLS YOU IT IS SO

Correct, we are not suppose to impose any day on anyone but God can. The ONLY day He has ever commanded to keep, has ever blessed or sanctified, is the 7th day Sabbath. No where in scripture is Sunday ever blessed or made holy. Christ never declared it holy nor a Sabbath nor a new Sabbath. It's not part of the New Covenant. It is a man's commandment.

I think so. I'm still learning, a lot. I am what the Bible calls a suckling, trying to become a babe in Christ, so don't take my word for it.... But, I think they are two different sets of rules. I also think that the commandments that we are suppose to be following now aren't the ten commandments, but are the commandments that Jesus Christ gave us Himself, through parables and the commandments that His disciples give us through out the new testament. Some people still try to live by the ten commandments and do so by the letter of the law, even though we have been told that if we live by the law, we will be judged by the law. Someone really should take the time to sit and read through the new testament and write down every commandment that they come across and then publish the new commandments given to us after Christ came. He didn't come to abolish the ten commandments, he fulfilled the scriptures. And gave new insight on what we were to do from then on. Anyway, don't take my word for it, as I've said... just read the new testament and while you do so, read it with the intention to discover our new commandments. Once you do, if you do, please share your find with me. I will do the same and I will share my find with you. That way you can give me what I missed and hopefully, I can give you what you missed.

First mistake ALL evangelicals make. Mix the Ten Commandments in with the laws of Moses. That is a grievous error. Moses DID NOT WRITE the Ten Commandments. God wrote the Ten Commandments with His own finger and spoke them with His own voice! They are the law of God, not Moses. The Law ofnGod was kept INSIDE the ark of the Covenant, the Laws of Moses were kept BESIDE the ark of the covenant. God Himself made it very clear that they were NOT THE SAME. THIS entire message is premised on an erroneous concept of the law. It can only lead to more error. How horrifying that he refused to preach in the presence of the Eternal Law of God. ITS WHAT ALL THE BIBLE IS BASED ON.
