Unlocking the New Testament Part 26 - James 2

  • David Pawson says that, although written to dispersed Jews, the book of James is very applicable to Christians today. It is a very practical word for our everyday lives. James was not focusing on doctrine or faith but was giving Christian advice to counter poor attitudes. As many of his readers were businesspeople intent on money making, James warns against neglecting God and the poor. He covers greed, envy, selfish ambition, pride, boasting, presumption, impatience, anger, arguments, gossip and litigation. If you’re not careful, money comes in and God goes out. James says we need to be alongside people but not to be infected by worldly attitudes. He encourages joy in the face of testing. He shows that we can get wisdom from above right away by asking for it without doublemindedness, without doubting. This is a very helpful book though some find it objectionable that it focusses on human activity, but David points out that James’ reason for writing explains why this is so. “Legalism says we’re saved by our good deeds; license says we’re saved without good deeds; but liberty says we’re saved for good deeds.”

That was great. I hadn't realised that the 2 audiences were so different that they needed different treatment coming from different angles. I had kind of understood it, but it is much clearer now. Thank you to David's family for allowing his teaching to be so freely available to so many.

I agree completely about faith and works . James doesnt say we are saved by works , he says , " Show me your faith by your works " . Who can disagree with that . ? God does help us not to sin , He gives us a way out and the strength not to give in to temptation. K

26:22 I have been there. Two times in the last 3 months. There were no visible solutions, and in fact, it was a miracle from God on both occasions. I can say, God listens to your prayers every time. But don't forget to be very thankful after.

Martin Luther over-corrected. We all do that in a way. I have too. Over-correction caused a friend of mine to die. She ran off the road one day and swerved quickly in the opposite direction to get back on the road and got hit by an oncoming car. Correction is good, but over-correction is sometimes worse than the original mistake.

I’m really having trouble with this one. David (and James) says it takes both faith and action (deeds/works). If this is guidance about how to best live that makes sense. If however, it is how we will be judged - then it’s the same as being judged by our works alone. That’s because as soon as we are judged by our works - in addition to anything else - being sinners, we will always fall short and that would send us to hell. This is in the same theme as Pawson’s questioning of the once save always saved doctrine. I get it that one can’t “get saved” and then act as though you have a free pass to heaven and do whatever from them on. But when people start talking about how we will be judged by every word we’ve ever said or even thought - how can we possibly make it through. Jesus said as much too. Oh well I reckon I’ll keep reading, listening, and trying….

Eph 2:8 - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast, For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus "to do good works", which God prepared in advance for us to do.
So we are not saved "by" works - Ephesians is clear but we are saved 'for' works which is where James also states that faith without works is a dead faith ...its faith and remaining faithful where the focus must be
......... its not about perfection, Gods Grace covers our inperfection, but it is about "remaining" faithful
Something that is lost in English translation - Greek action words have a present but also continous expectaion
      - ask......means to ask and carry on asking
      - believe means to carry on believing ...."those who believe, and carry on believing, in him "will be" saved" (- future )
It is about repentance and baporitsm for teh forgiveness of our sins ....., changing, away from, ..... BUT If we carry on deliberately sinning after we have receved the knowledge of truth - no sacrifice is left Hebrews 10:26 works is the visible outward sign on an inward faith - its the faith and remaining faithful that results in salvation ....not the evidence

God Does NOT test or tempt anyone! James 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man. Tempted and Test mean the same thing!

Vanessa Audain God does not tempt but He most certainly tests, or entrusts us. Temptation is being enticed or allured to sin; testing is God trusting us to make the right choice. They don’t mean “the same thing”.
