Rib knitting is perfect for projects that need stretch. Think: the brim of a hat; sleeve, sock and mitten cuffs; and even the collars around sweaters. When you need stretch, look to rib knitting!
In this video I'll walk you through the two most popular rib stitches: the 1x1 rib and the 2x2 rib.
Both these rib stitches use knits and purls to make a very stretchy rib. Both are also perfect for beginners who are just getting used to knitting and purling.
Master rib knitting, and you'll have a really useful knitting technique for all your future projects.

After watching this I realised what I was doing wrong, while I could knit and purl easily by themselves. I completely didn’t realise that when doing a knitting pattern you had to bring the yarn to the front/back before knitting/purling if it wasn’t already, makes so much sense and also means you don’t get a load of extra stitches that are all weird and crisscrossing, thankyou :)
I’m glad this video has been helpful! I remember being like you when I started out knitting. I couldn’t figure how to transition from a knit to a purl and there was a ton of criss crossing!
Me too! I could not figure out why my stuff was looking so wrong. This video was a life saver!
Same! This one fact has changed my whole experience of knitting!
This is what I was doing wrong too!
I was exactly the same! This is why I find learning from videos so much easier than written instructions 😅
This video taught me something I hadn't seen explained before - how to switch from knit to purl. I had tried to do some ribbed knitting before and ended up adding stitches like crazy because I wasn't moving the yarn from back to front between knit and purl (I think). Watching the motions you used should get me back on track. Thanks!
Manuel McLure
oh!! it's so relieving to see someone else was having the same issue.
Omg me too!!!!! I had to simply practice and repeat to get a nice looking garter and stocking, so I thought I simply needed practice!!! You don't want to know how many times I tried to rib before I watched this and realized I wasn't wrapping the yarn back around to set up the switch. It results in a random distribution of stitches around the needle rather than a nice row.
That's exactly the same thing I was doing wrong, I'd suddenly jumped from 30 stitches to line 46
Same!! I actually slowed down the playback speed to 0.25x. 😂 I think I get it now!
I was trying it out without watching tutorials, i went from 18 stitches to 24 and i was like "wait, thats illegal"
I’m immunocompromized and my mom has cancer, so I’m basically in lockdown until a vaccine is ready or the virus gets me. These videos help quite a bit. I may not be able to be as productive, but I can knit. I can donate some winterwear and someone somewhere will not be as cold. It gives me time to improve as well!
I kept having an issue with this. I was getting two strands of yarn over the needle as the stitch for my knit stitches. Thanks to your presentation I realized my mistake.
People mention how you move the yarn forward for the purl stitch. But they don’t usually say, “for knit stitch, you move it BACK.” So I was wrapping an extra half rotation without realizing it. Because it’s just purls and knits, many people kind of fly by the demo, assuming since you know how to do both if you attempt this, that the details of what exactly is going on aren’t important.
Things like that are often what trip me up. I have no one to teach me, no family to get help from, no knitting group, nothing. Just videos. And they tend to leave out things that are easily explained, in person. Little details can derail the whole thing. But they’re important. Things like this, or not being able to start purling if you do a quick cast on, they can make people so frustrated that they give up. It’s not that they suck, but that their info... it’s not wrong, but it’s incomplete.
Thank you for SHOWING what you’re doing, and doing so slowly. It’s much appreciated.
I hope you are still living and living well. ❤
@@micha2761Yes! Next week is my second wedding anniversary! And we had a handfasting featuring a scarf I had knit my husband.
My mother passed away not long after I wrote this comment. But I’m finally not alone anymore, which she had been very concerned about. Even bad days can be made bright by my husband. ☺️
@AmaraJordanMusic
Thank you for responding. This made my day 🥰 I am so happy for you, Happy that you've found true companionship!
Sorry you lost your mum, I know that pain. I pray you and your husband have a long and healthy life with one another. ❤️
Davina, you're absolutely phenomenal!!! I'm a new knitter, and I have actually joined a local knitting class at my alma mater. Our instructor is actually using your CZcams videos as part of teaching the aspects of knitting to our class. I stumbled on your videos before the class started so I was the wiser. I have watched many of your videos! You are so pleasant and very easy to follow! You're second to none. Thanks for all you do!!!
My God, you are the answer to my prayers! Been trying to learn all these crazy cast ons, while the entire time it was as simple as moving the yarn front to back. I love you and your videos! May you make millions on CZcams!
Aww thank you!! 🤗
Thank you oodles for this Tutorial! I am a crocheter and just for shits and giggles and I decided that I was going to learn how to knit this week and within 24 hours I was knitting but for some odd reason I could not get the alternating knit and purl stitch down........ But because your tutorial was so clear and simple it allowed me to watch your hands and I noticed that I was not switching the yarn back-and-forth between alternating stitches so my working yard I was just keeping it where it was AnyWho thank you so much now I have the ribs stitch down
I haven't knit in awhile, and I'm watching tutorials to get back into the swing of things. Even for things I already know, your videos always have little tips I find useful! Thank you so much!
Awesome! I'm glad to be part of your knitting journey. Welcome back to knitting!
AH that quick explanation on what knit and purl look like on the needle saved me from my stupid 1x1 problem
Finally learnt this rib stitch and had nailed it.🎉
Thank you for this!! I just started knitting and couldn't figure out how to alternate between stitches! Very clear instructions, you are a very good teacher :)
Thank you - that was really helpful. Doing 2 x 2 rib for the first time and was a bit confused until I saw your video. Really appreciate it :-)
I love the way you hold the yarn, your knitting style is nice to watch
Thank you for this . Your videos are akways so cheery and helpful ! I also love the image of a valley !🤩
Hi thank you for this video it was very helpful, I know how to knit and purl but didn’t know how to get the rib effect, your instructions are very clear and easy to follow and the camera view of the knitting is perfect, I can only knit basic things like scarfs at the moment I am doing one all knit but wanted my next one to have a different pattern so I will do the 2x2 rib knit, looking forward to starting it now thanks for your help ❤️
This made me realise that I have a high tension and need chunky yarnwhrn starting out. Thanks so much for helping me out :)
Thank you! You make it easy to understand and follow!! 💞💞
Great video and THANK YOU FOR THE CC!!🥰
This was so incredibly helpful! Could you possibly do videos like this for more basic stitch patterns? Especially the multiples needed to cast on, I get so confused!
The best explaining vibeo about riding. Thank you and kisses from Greece 💕 💗💖

Thank you. This was really helpful!
Perfect, thank you for this!
Beautiful yarn.good video
It took me four tries but I finally got it! Hooray! ☺
Wow thank you so much! this was so helpful!
Really love you video so easy to follow you Thanks 😊
Oh yikes, I've been moving between the knits and purls totally wrong! That explains why the pattern looks so weird! Thanks for the video, I'm going to unravel my wool and restart :)
My tutorial said “bring it to front/back so it doesn’t tangle” and I thought it wasn’t tangling so I was doing fine. Turns out the lumpy mess I created was totally tangled.
Oh my goodness thank you for this
Your so amazing,explaining this❤
Brilliant!
I couldn't understand where the extra stitches came from and why it just looked a mess.
This videos was a massive help!
I just need to keep count of the rib stich rows, as I'm not sure of an easy way to count it 😅
this really helped thank you so much!!
So helpful!! thank you :)
I’m glad ur back I’m a beginner and I love how to teach I’m actually making a scarf 🧣 watching your video... so thank u

@@sheepandstitch Can't wait to see it!!!
Thanks so helpful
Love the yarn you’re using!
I have a question (I'm absolutely new to knitting) - I'm knitting a scarf and was wondering if I can switch from 4x4 rib (about 60 rows of rib knit) to another stitch (2x2 rib, seed stitch or stockinette) for 30 rows and then back to the 4x4 rib stitch? Is it possible to do that without ruining the scarf i.e having a wider middle part than the ends?
Thank u a lot ❤
I NEED TO TELL YOU MY MISTAKE WHILE LEARNING 1X1 RIB STITCH LIKE A FEW MONTHS AGO
So I'm still new to knitting but I successfully made a bag with 3 patterns sew together which is purse stitch, "1X1 rib stitch" and a moss stitch(handle is just english knit)
SO I LEARNT ALL OF THIS FROM YOUR CHANNEL IS SO HELPFUL
so I was doing as you said row 1 perfect nothings go wrong
But BEGAN WITH ROW 2 AND SO ON I hear you said *knit the knits, purl the purls*
So I thought "maybe she meant when you knit in the first row you knit it and purl the ones you purled" SO I DID THAT
And when I was learning moss stitches,I thought "why does this look familiar when you also show me the seed stitches"
RN I JUST REALIZED "OH CRAP I JUST ACCIDENTALLY LEARNT SEED STITCH BECUZ OF THAT MISTAKE"
So that's why when I said 1X1 rib stitch I putted " on it becuz its an accidental seed stitch I mistakenly learnt
And yes I was using another yarn to check if its really a wrong stitch patterns
Becuz when I knit it I was saying *but mine isn't stretching*
Thank you very much
does the ribbing only go up? as in you start with the length that you want and increase the hieght? or will the ribbing still work if i alernate knit and purl rows because im planning to make a jacket and the ribbing would need to be pretty long so it doesnt make sense ot have thart long needles
Beautiful knitting and with wonderful video steps. Could you show us the double increases and double decreases too?
Hello just starting knitting...
Thank you soooooo much for your videos and explanations!!!
Thank youu !
Thank youu!
Thank you !!!!!
Aww, you're so welcome! What would you like to learn or to knit? (I'm doing some informal research to figure out what new knitters are interested in!)
Can this be done the other way round, i.e. purl then knit? Will there be any difference?
(sorry I'm a beginner)
Hi! What yarn did you use in this tutorial? I love it!
Very helpful. Luvin your channel. 💙
great video .we enjoyed watching it super liked!!!
i was making a beanie and was confused about why my ribbing wasn't looking like in the video and then 10 rows in i realised i had been doing it all wrong... this video helped a lot tho thank you!
I'm confused, when you finish round 1 you end with a purl. Then as you begin round 2 you point to the first stitch and say "this is a knit stitch". Isn't the first stitch of round 2 the same as the last stitch made in round 1? Are they two different takes?
The back of a knit is a purl and vice versa, so she purled the last 2 on the first row and then turned it around and that purl is a knit on the other side, which means you knit those first 2.
@@gabriellemacready4223 OH MY GOD i only just realised what i was doing wrong from this comment you are an actual lifesaver
@@gabriellemacready4223 i’ve been trying for hours and it wasn’t working and i’ve only just managed to do it right because of you THANK YOU 😭😭
I was just coming to make this comment! I was so confused
Hi. I am re-learning knitting. When doing a rib stitch and using a selvage do you do 2 knits and then a purl or 1 knit 1 purl and end with a selvage knit however it counts? Arlene M
I need help! I'm confused with this pattern that has 38 stitches per row, with a 2x2 rib. when I knit, I don't see any knit stitches even though I know I have knit. But this means at the end of the row, I have to knit 2 since 38 isn't divisible by four. I don't know why I can't see the knits, can any one help?
Hey I'm trying 2x2 but when i trun aroud my work i got purl stitches please let me know what I'm doing worng
I struggled following this until I realized I was using a different cast on method where you only loop the working yarn over the needle. It worked for basic knit stitch/purl stitch/stockinette on every row but when I tried ribbing, the last row of the stitch wouldn't tighten on itself so I ended up with a very loose thread when I purl/knit the last row. Would love an explanation on how the cast on affect the knitting.
I have no idea what I am doing wrong. Mine looks like a big mess.... I'll keep trying
Don't give up! I cannot tell you how many times I have frogged my knitting! I finally can knit & purl after 9 years of looking at pictures, trying again & again. Yea You Tube! :)
Mine too, my ribs are extremely messy...
Another home run video Davina! Keep em coming!
Thanks Kim! I love your cheerleading!
@@sheepandstitch You're very welcome! Just wanted to send some encouragement your way hon!

Thanks for the tutorial! 2 questions: I'm knitting ribbing on magic loop right now and my knits on the RS are "open". On the WS, they are just fine. When I knit ribbing in flat and round, my knits are just fine on both sides, but for some reason my knits are open on the RS of magic loop, any idea why that might be happening? And also, what is the blue yarn you're using in the beginning?
:0 i was being stupid and didnt think 4 went into 100, so i started freaking out thinking i had to cast on more to do the 2x2 rib on my dpns. this is my first project im making a beanie♡♡♡
What's the size of the needle in the first example? I'm struggling to do knits so tight
Can i just knit with double pointed needles
Can you keep other stiches which is related to knitting like seed stich, etc . Please
hello! do you need to use double sided needles for this or can you use straight ones too?
You can use any kind of needles, straight or double pointed, to knit a rib. Hope that helps!
How do you count the numbers of rows and stitches in ribbing?
How is the K1P1 for 1x1 rib any different than odd seed stitch (aside from the last stitch being a knit in seed stitch)? But from what I understand it becomes different with what you do in the second row?
from what I can tell, with seed, you knit the purls and purl the knits, with rib it's viceversa. I'm doing a seed stitch project now so that's what I've noticed.
You say knit the knits and purl the purls for the 2×2 rib, but another tutorial I watched said purl the knits and knit the purls. Don't know what to do now 😅😭
For any rib stitch (1x1 or 2x2), you knit the knits and purl the purls. For a stitch like seed stitch you would knit the purls and purl the knits. So whether you knit or purl really depends on the stitch pattern you’re trying to knit! Hope that helps!
Is it really necessary to cast an even number of stitches for 2x2 flat rib? Couldn't you continue knitting the knits and purling the purls? I guess you would just have an odd one last stitch on each row. Does that make any difference?
Why do some videos say that for ribbing when in the wrong side you have to purl the knit and knit the purl? It's like they switch for the second row. I'm so confused
I saw that you purled the last loop on the first row and then you said it was a knit when you came back around for row 2. I have been confused as to how that is so?
its so confusing
@@vorribleperson3731 so I figured it out. Do the opposite of what you just ended with. When you reach the bottom of your needle and do a purl then when you go back to the top for the next row do a knit and vice versa
@@ParisAbigailMoore thank uu!!
I was knitting the purls and purling the knits😂😂😂
Davina did you study fibers in university? You make it look so easy, I’m jealous. Would this stitch work with larger gauge needles? Or is it best on such fine ones? I’m a beginner so maybe I don’t even belong looking at this just yet but it’s so pretty, I love the 2X2! 💓
If you use bigger needles, then the pattern is just enlarged and is more visible!
i literally cannot figure this out!! why is it so hard for me haha
I actually tried 1×1 rib but ended having seed stitch..... i am so confused.... then i saw your tutorial for seed stitch the first method seems the same... but when you do it looks different.... is rib 1×1 and seed stitch the same?? Or am i doing something wrong ??
Thank you for the tutorial. I'd like to know for 2 x 2 rib knitting in the round, if the last stitch on one needle is the 1st knit, then would the 1st stitch on the ensuing needle the 2nd knit? Thank you in advance for your help
Excellence
Which size that needles and yarn on 5:53 did you use ?
Hi! If I remember correctly, it's Madelintosh Twist Light in glazed pecan, which I got on loveknitting here: bit.ly/2TlUXh7 Hope that helps!
No matter how many times I've tried I always mess it up somehow. I know what I need to do but I just somehow can't do it. Maybe I just need some more practice obviously this is a great tutorial but I just suck lol
i still don;t know why my rib stitch is looking like a seed stitch. Please help!
Can we have continental style 1x1 ? I don't understand english style at all
Purl is basically the half double of knitting
what yarn are you using for the 1x1? It's gorgeous!
how to you put it on the stitch?
Can you do 1 x 1 rib but 2 color? how? tia
Once the project starts to get larger, do the edges curl?
Nope! Rib stitch shouldn’t curl
I was also trying this after cast off I ended up being a bead💎 upside down
Tutorial nya tapi dan bening....
i know this is an old video, but i'm looking at some instructions from weareknitters and this is what it says for 1x1 rib.
Work rows 1 to 8 in 1 x 1 rib
stitch, this means:
Odd rows: knit 1, purl 1*. Repeat
until the end of the row.
Even rows: purl 1, knit 1*. Repeat
until the end of the row.
but in your tutorial, you say to do knit-purl-knit-purl for all rows... are there just two different ways of doing 1x1 rib?
I'm only a novice knitter but I believe alternating turns it into seed stitch.
I'm so happy I came across this video! It finally makes sense how to knit one, purl one without my stitches getting all weird 🫠😂 thank you - I'm a grateful beginner!
i have no idea why it doesn't look like a ribbed stitch, i have markers for every 2x2, i'm following the pattern, but when i look at the my rows, they just look like a bunch of nonsense stitches
I still don't know what I'm doing wrong cos mines going diagonal despite following the knit the knits and purl the purls 😭
Ah I was missing the step of brining the yarn over for the pearl stitch before knitting it. It resulted it crossed stretches that made no sense when getting to the second row. That’s fit clarifying this.
I have tried this pattern I don’t know how many times! It never turns out. As far as I know I do all the stitches correct but I never get the ribbed look? I took a photo but can’t figure out how to attach it.
Are you knitting the knits and purling the purls? That’s the most common mistake
I’m confused about the difference between 1 by 1 rib and moss stitch..?
I am very new to knitting! I’ve been trying out new stitches but I can’t get down these rib stitches. Yours looks so nice and put together. Mine looks so lose and wonky. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong ? Any help?
I’m not dropping stitches or anything, could I be not knitting tight enough?
Hey! I would try using a smaller sized needle (maybe try going down one size). Tightening up the tension will tighten up the stitches, making them less loose and wonky. That usually works for me. Good luck!
What I don’t understand is that when she turns her needle around to start the second row, she has the same stitch that she started with. But every time I start with one, I turn it around and it looks like the opposite stitch. So what do I do then?
I cast on an even number of stitches, so my last stitch is a purl stitch. When I turn my needle around it is a knit stitch (because the back of a purl is a knit and vice versa). I’ll guess that you have an odd number of stitches. This is ok! Just follow the instructions and knit the knits and purl the purls after knitting your first row. If you start with a purl stitch, that’s ok. Just purl it. If you start with a knit stitch, then knit it. I hope that makes sense!
I do the same and I end up having seed stitch!! 😮 where am I going wrong!?
I been knitting a hat 92 stitches single rib, I like to used knit 2 purl 2, do I used less stitches ? I am not sure and be so grateful of your help
1*1 rib is same as seed knit !! Since I did this knit and I am getting a seed pattern. When I checked your seed knit video it's the exact same knitting. I am confused.
Love your work. For us neurodivergent knitters, please could you not use background music in your videos. Your beautiful voice alone is perfect. ✨️
My 2x2 has no ribs, what now?
im so confused bc when i do this is just becomes seed stitch
