  • The U.S. Navy just commissioned the future USS Cooperstown LCS-23 as the newest Independence-variant littoral combat ship, or LCS, on May 8 in New York City. This accomplishment places the ship that the Lockheed Martin-led team built into active service with the U.S. Navy.
Cooperstown is the first naval ship named after Cooperstown, New York and honours the 70 Hall of Famers who served the United States during wartime in various conflicts spanning the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War.

Mr. Browning was a genius, his work with firearms was unusual considering he was a lifelong Mormon, a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints! Of course they were NOT against warfare, since California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico are part of the USA due to the efforts of the Mormon Battalion, about 2000 men HIRED by the U.S. Goverment as mercenaries to fight against Mexico during the Mexican War! This was the ONLY incident in American History of a Contract with a Church to provide soldiers for the U.S. Government!@@TheFlutecart

What they are not keeping are supposed to be sold off and replaced by the larger Constellation class frigates.
They'll keep some for fighting Piracy in the Persian Gulf and Drug interdiction in the Gulf of Mexico.
They're both too small to really contribute in a pier war.

Last of its kinda, almost retired. Now used as a research vessel. Its modular design was a failure. It had both hull cracking and motor issues which caused it to be stuck in the sea needing a tug boat. I really don't see this ship as being success. It does seem good as a launchpad for hypersonics but so can submarines. This ship... nice ship in design but not one in reality

It already comes with a defect in the electrical system, in the transmission, from the factory, if it goes beyond 8 knots, you can call the tugboat. If someone throws stones, it already causes serious damage to the hull.

2 months later us navy decommissioned new ship!

Meanwhile in the time it took to build this, China probably built about 30 or 40 new navy ships. The USA needs to re-up its domestic shipbuilding capacity (both naval and merchant to be honest) which has whithered on the vine over the past few decades, while China has surged ahead.

The Littoral ship designs, along with their originally intended purpose have been deemed a failure, with many already being de-commissioned. No disrespect to the gallant people who serve on them, they always have my support. Building more just begs the question - why?

Money was already paid and hulls were already laid. Better to keep the dockyards working than to cancel the project. Even being a failure the hulls have provided a fair bit of knowledge for future ships.

@@timbrwolf1121 True enough, and the knowledge of what not to do in the future is quite valuable. Congress has often appropriated money for a ship. Watched the keel get laid, and in some cases the hull and decking built, and then cancelled them.

With all due respect ...heard that the freedom class is unreliable & that the navy department worried because something is wrong with section of its gear box & that was founded to be very costly to repaired , now if succeded to repaired it then i don't know , if had been all right & decent & if its recorded been cleared i don't know although must been reported that the navy department didn't wanted them & trying to replaced them sometime ago means too much to been desired !!!
