James, PLEASE get a blood test done for your kidney function once a year. There are very few physical signs that something is wrong until it is almost too late. My wife only found out that she has chronic kidney disease when it had already progressed to stage 4. Good luck to you too - we love your videos. Dave from Cape Town

About the Portuguese language: read ALOUD 1 page a day from a book in Portuguese and because your wife is Portuguese you can get immediate feedback.
If you do this I guarantee that in 3 months of continuous reading 5 minutes a day ALOUD you'll see a huge progress. I speak 5 languages so I know what I am talking about. Please try it.
Good idea! Although I’m quite good reading but I find the pronunciation difficult. It’s a tongue twister. Unlike Cristina who speaks several languages.
@@The-Quinta that's why reading ALOUD is a game changer because if you record yourself you can immediately improve on the go, bit by bit. Also the brain will get used with proper language structure that is grammatically sound, and what amazing about it, after 2-3 months of daily reading these language rules will become second nature for the subconscious and you'll just wake up speaking with more and more confidence

I know I’m late to the party, but I agree 100%. In my case it was English, Spanish and French. All were learned in old-fashioned schooling systems where we stood up one by one and read a paragraph aloud.

I'm in the United States and I speak Portuguese, I'm Brazilian, it's not easy, I'm still learning the English language, but it's workable, I also understand the content of the conversation but when it comes to speaking I have difficulty! But I believe that language is not a barrier that cannot be crossed. Happy Sunday everyone!

My brother in law deals with kidney stones. Has had several surgeries over the years and they are still a problem. Extremely painful. I so enjoy your channel.

Lovely hearing some of your backstory. You naturally come over as very real honest people in your videos and this just reinforces that. Life throws up challenges and you work through them without complaining, too much 😉 We have just moved out, near the centre of the country, and just find the people, country and life embraces you. Frustrated occasionally when things take a little longer to happen. You just have to relax, go for a walk, have a glass of wine and it all works out. Magical really 😍

OMG! Can you actually walk to the beach from the house? Now, that's what I call heaven. If I was younger by a few years, I would love to move to Portugal, but I am not at this point in a position to do that: looking after my Mother for quite a number of years, while working full time, getting sick myself, etc, but I'm OK now, at least. I do live in Nova Scotia. It is for the most part a very good place to live, and you don't have to go that far to the hiking, cycling trails and the beach, provincial parks, national parks. We have beautiful summers and the mildest winters in Canada. So I guess it could be worse. Chow for now!🙂👍👍🇨🇦

Hi Deborah, no we drive to the beach as Marilyn pointed out.we have some of the best beach down here in the algarve, plus the scenery around us is just beautiful. I too left London in my mid 40's, married at the time, hubby and l travelled from Barcelona to Palermo along the coast to find our spot, and settled in Nice.
Re health l was riddled with inflammation mid 50s and since going on Keto (good for Kidney stones too) by watching Dr Berg on utube l'm 100% in control of my health. Good health & sunshine 😎🌞

Really enjoyed your story. As we get older we want life to slow. We moved from the city to a small town 15 yrs ago. My parents moved first, then husband and I came a year later. The next year my brother and his family moved here. We all lived 2 houses from each other. Then our 2 oldest daughters and their husband's moved here. So it's been very nice and parents, husband and I retired. We just, to quote John Lennon, "sit watching the wheels go round and round. No longer on that merry go round!" Thank you for taking your time and sharing with us. 🇺🇸

Wow, what a backdrop to the latter part of the video. When you were giving reasons on why you moved to the Algarve I just looked over your shoulder and one of many many reasons was there, the views are immense. The peace and tranquility is amazing. You did hit a nerve for me talking about the children and grandchildren and I could feel it for you but you have a wonderful life and the family get to enjoy it as well. Wonderfull to hear about your story! So many questions have been answered...and what courage you had to take on that new journey. It is said...that it takes a life changing experience to get you to make think about what road you need to take! The fact that you and Cristina went to Portugal to be with her parents...that set the new course for your future! Yes, there were a few hiccups along the road and you had to go another route...but ultimately you looked ahead and forged on. Look at where you are today... achieving that dream.🙏 would be lovely to hear what inland area of the Algarve or village you are situated. Seems out the way of the maddening crowds and such a restful community. Thank you for this lovely video.

Life changing for us, but we’ve not looked back! There were some ups and downs, but we keep going and appreciate each day! We’re very blessed here in central Algarve. 😊
Thank you Christina and James. I loved the scenery and your story. I am watching all the videos of the quinta and Christina Makes and your brother's channels as well as a bunch of other Portugal expat folks videos because I am trying to see if I can maybe make the move to Portugal myself. I hiked the El Camino across Spain in 2016 and the people culture and land were amazing. The Spanish people were just so kind, patient, welcoming and tolerant. I grew up on a dairy farm in Maine, but have lived the last 30 years in Arizona in a city.
I watch all these videos of folks living on the edge of small villages among nature and I really am trying to boost myself onto a plane to go explore and see whether I can find a supportive community to share the next stage of life. Thanks again for your videos and I wish you the best on your channels:)

This is the video I needed, still scared but looking at properties on line, son getting married in a couple of months but we have to see in which direction that they both go in, i think the move will come but not for a couple of years, I’m sure having skills of being a qualified bricklayer and a highly skilled specialist welder would be helpful!

It always annoys me a bit when people here in France tell my husband how good his French is -- they don't seem to realize that it's his native language!! But the subtext is (or I always feel it is) that my French, on the other hand... 🙄
I find it quite comical. Apparently the reason is because Cristina thinks in English and therefore when speaking portuguese she’s polite. An example is portuguese say give me! Cristina says please may I have.

A propósito dos algarvios falarem bem inglês. Sou portuguesa, alta lora e olhos claros. No Algarve nas lojas falam- me em inglês. Eu costumo perguntar em inglês se falam português. Irrita- me a subserviência de falarem no nosso país primeiro em inglês. Já me aconteceu também na Madeira e no Alentejo. Sou mais do norte
