"Quis hic locus?, quae regio?, quae mundi plaga?"
Vanessa Redgrave quoting Seneca just fits PERFECTLY in this scene!
Definitely one of my favs from this movie. Thanx for posting ; )

What I like is that in the scene we are given her "diagnosis," yet, not her fate. In fact, we mistakenly think of "diagnosis" as a sentence, a fate, an inescapable truth, which is exactly the opposite of what a diagnosis is. Diagnosis tells us what "is," in some terms. It tells us nothing of what "may become." This scene rightly restores this meaning while the Dr. suggests her patient deals with questions yet to be answered.

I am facing this same question right now and it terrifies me! I am so afraid that I will slip into insanity. Such a powerful scene and spot on for those who are coming to the realization of their prognosis.

One of the best scenes in the movies! I cried when I saw this part. What she was saying spoke to me. *I am Suzanna...*

Dr Wick is so manipulative in this scene. It’s a perfect example of the power held by psychiatrists in 1967… judge and jury. Susanna is clearly not insane the way Daisy with her chickens is insane yet Dr Wick abuses her power and keeps Susanna for not much more than so-called promiscuity as defined by this strict and harsh era that began in the late 19th century and continues to this day: the use of psychiatry in similar ways to the secret police in totalitarian regimes.
The quote from Seneca the Younger is a power play too I think. She understands Susanna’s intelligence and knows she will understand how this quote is used as an overly dramatic 1967-ish prelude to a threat…a direct threat viz. “if you indulge [your flaws]” ie keep sleeping with men… “will you commit yourself to hospital for life?”
“What world is this? What kingdom?” Well in 1967 and today it’s the sort of world and kingdom in which people born with certain body parts are expected to behave in particular ways and it’s been made to appear natural that the body parts one is born with do (and should) dictate the kinds of behaviours those people are allowed to exhibit. And this is policed with intensity.
