I think it's not only Stadler who deserves a praise for the interior, but SBB too. They were the ones who checked everything on the option list probably.

I'll also add the tray tables are narrow and not long enough. I wouldn't have cost anymore money to have large functionnal tray tables. Otherwise, I'm impressed with what I can see in this video. I'd enjoy commuting aboard them.

Stadler trains are really nice! With the KISSes, FLIRTs, their amazing locomotives (eurodual's are great!), and, perhaps some Stadler-built unpowered coaches for these locos, these trains can easily transform a railroad into world class!

Once took the "IC" towards Düsseldorf in the morning from Trier what is only a prolonged RE and didn't feel to comfy. The only comforts were less stops and travelling through to Cologne, but the interior is not designed for long distance services.

I go to school in Oerlikon now, so I often take these from Oerlikon to Zürich HB on the IR36, I really like them, but I have 2 complaints:
    - The seats are quite hard and not fluffy, I suspect they'll get less hard over time, but I would prefer a more fluffy cover, like on the RABe 511 or the Traverso
    - I wish the livery had a bit more black on the bottom, more like the IC 2020, as well as black window bands on the mid-level, it just feels a bit empty right now.
But apart from that these are still exceptional trains, which I appreciate every time I ride one, just like the RABe 511 that sometimes run on my line to Zürich (S7).

It`s always a pleasure to see those trains. I live near Schaffhausen, seeing them every day passing through my home town. Before those trains were fully introduced on the Re48 they sometimes replaced the older Re450 with their DPZ (so the one you arrived with in Schaffhausen) on the S9-Line which was really cool to see them stop. Sometimes they get replaced by the RABe 511, but currently the 511 get replaced sometimes by RABe 514 (the Simens which can be seen on the other side of the Rhine River while passing the Rhine Falls)
But you`re definitely right, they are amazing and Stadler just showed their outstanding quality again after introducing the Giruno

Enjoyable video as always - thank Thibault. We love holidaying in Switzerland (a bit expensive but well worth it for the scenery) and buy a Swiss Passport allowing travel on most trains, buses, trams and lake steamers. Seating in most 2nd class SBB trains is firm, but unless you’re travelling on a very busy service it really isn’t worth upgrading to first class.

    • @Fan652w
      @Fan652w Před 4 měsíci +1

I largely agree with your comment, except that when I buy a Swiss Travel Pass (the correct name) I do think it is worth upgrading to first class. Almost all Swiss trains (including the S-bahns) have first class. Perhaps more importantly, on the lake boats the UPPER deck is first class only, and this is rigidly enforced.

There seems to be quite a few more differences vs RABe 511. On the upper deck, in the 2nd class, they lost the single window non-facing seats (they actually lost that small window all together) - guessing there's more spacing between seats now, but you have no choice but to seat facing someone. They retained that single non-facing config in the 1st class though.

Thanks for the review and your visit to Switzerland! I really like the design of the train. The carpet in second class and plug sockets as well as bins at the seat are nice! However, why did they have to choose so hard seats and almost unpadded armrests? I wish SBB would fit their new trains with the same seats as in their eurocity coaches, which are very well padded and have a recline even in second class. I also miss footrests on the airplane style seats in first class and more bike storage. Four spaces just isn't enough in my opinion. And another small thing that bothers me in a lot of trains: why are there no cup holders on the outside of the folding table in the face-to-face seats? I don't always want to fold open the table just to prevent my bottle from sliding away😂

Thank you for an excellent video which gave me a splendid introduction to a type of train I hope to travel on in my next Swiss holiday this April. But a graphic at the beginning regarding fares is misleading. You quote the single fare for 45 kms as 24.20 CHFR. As is always the case on Swiss Public Transport hardly anybody will be paying the full single fare. Regular travelers will have some kind of season ticket ('Abonnement'). Less regular travelers will have a 'Halb-Taxe Abonnement' giving 50% discount. Well-advised tourists will have a Swiss Travel Pass for the duration of their stay entitling them to free travel on all Swiss public transport except purely tourist mountain lines.

You are indeed right......If you are a regular traveler on the Swiss Railway network which is the case for a vast majority of the Swiss people, it is far more economical to have the 50% discount abo without mentioning the discounted fares on top for a given destination if the ticket is booked few days in advance. the Swiss Railway network is certainly one of the best (if not the best) railway network in the world together with the Japanese railway network.

    Miss the loc hauling trains.
The seats in this new EMU are quite hard. Where are the comfy chairs like in the orange coloured EUROFIMA cars of the 1980s? Pure nostalgia! They should be the inspiration for the train building companies and not the spartan models of today. But when engineers use every where the same computer models, they become cost reducing formated brains and everyone builds the same stuff. Sad. Cost reducing is one thing, but quality could be realised in the past, why not now?

Regional/commuter trains usually don't have a cafe/restaurant car, including in the US. That said, in some places in the US what you might call "regional" will be considered inter city/long distance in other places so a service like the Amtrak NEC regional where some routs can take almost 8h you're likely to have a cafe car. Switzerland is a small country (about 16,000 sq. mi) so on most trips you won't have one but most IntrCity (IC) and EuroCity (EC)will have one (very good but pretty expensive).
Generally speeking amd depending on the country regional/commuter won't have a cafe car, medium distance might have and long distance/high speed usually has one and in some places tje hiest class will include a meal served tonyour seat.

(and that's in "coach") All that and a very large seat pitch with a dining car with full meals to boot! We're supposed to get new equipment due to a federal funding bill soon. It will be interesting to see if that new equipment equals the existing 20 plus year old train sets. I suspect they will be more "modern" eg more like those rotten versions of "so-called" seats on aircraft. Time will tell.

This is a train operating every 30 minutes, on an 28 miles long track with multiple stops, taking less than 40 minutes. Show me any medium distance commuter train in America sporting a dinning car. Regular long distance train in Europe also have a dining car. A train journey upwards of 90 minutes would be considered long distance in Switzerland.
