Can We Make A Puncture Proof Tyre?

  • Punctures are unfortunately inevitable when mountain biking! MTB trails are scattered with sharp rocks and thorns waiting to create tiny holes in your tyres. Before tubeless this would mean taking your wheel out on the side of the trial and changing or repairing your inner tube. With the introduction of tubeless those trailside stops have reduced massively, but not entirely. Blake Samson has made it his goal to create a completely puncture-free trail experience, so no more packing spare innertubes or plugs!

      @Surestick88 They are worth it for anyone who hates sealant, never having to stop riding is a plus. My 3 top bikes all have them with Schwalbe poly tubes. I am about 190 lbs with my pack and I am not feeling increased rolling resistance. If anything there is an increase in climbing traction on less than smooth climbs and what feels like low frequency damping on the downs. They are cheap enough to try in my book.

    I've always though we should have a honeycomb or aero bar (UK chocolate) type internal to tyres, that way only the smallest section would be affected when you ride over something that would cause you a puncture. 3D printed tyres would be pricey if course, but the interval of replacement would be so greatly reduced.

  • @better.better
    @better.better Před 5 měsíci +1

    hey Blake for your THIRD attempt: with spray foam you're supposed to drill holes at regular intervals to spray the foam into the gap and ensure that it still fills the void completely. I think there's even instructions on the can for that, as well as doors and windows whose gaps are exposed with the trim removed. obviously you can't do that for the inner one without containing it somehow, maybe you could wrap it in tape that you'll be removing before you try to put it on the I'm. however aren't those liners designed to compress when you fill it with air, then fluff back up when you lose air pressure?

    • @hodgo1981
      @hodgo1981 Před 5 měsíci

      very plausible. I wonder if you could mount the tyre+liner, then use a modified Lezyne co2 Blaster with the expanding foam hooked to it instead of co2 canister. and puncture/blast foam in around the outside. Then hope that you can spray enough into the inner side via the valve... or if he really wants to sacrifice the rim, drill and mount another 1 or 2 valves into the rim.

    i have tried a tubeless insert. it was hard as a rock. felt like i had more than 100 psi. i felt every pebble on the trail. the wheel started to make a noise i didn't like. it took me to cut the solid tube out as well as cutting the tire into pieces to remove the tire and solid tube. i want to try what you did. maybe put a smaller tube on the top of the foam tube to make maybe a softer ride. i used a thick tire liner and didn't have a flat for years. i was going to visit a friend and i got a flat. the friend came and saved me. took the wheel apart and put a new tube in. i did inspect the inside of the tire to make sure there was nothing inside. put the new tube and tire back on. right away i got two more flats. took everything apart got a ride home and continued my investigation and finally determined my plastic tube save had turned hard and cracked because of the heat here in AZ and so i needed to replace the tube saver. then i saw those victoria things that you used. i really haven't done much riding since. had other problems im trying to fix now with little success. thanks for the content.

Won't turn to dust like the spray foam. Easier use. Probably use some 3m cloth spray glue to attach to the foam inserts. ***edit: typo

    This is the issue with mountain biking, the need to build more jankish and hazardous trails to prove what. Larger jumps and drops, crazer rock gardens is what kills tires, and overall, the longevity of the bike.
    For the average rider, tire punctures are not an issue at all when you run proper PSI. I have been riding MTB for 32 years and had under 10 punctures.

    Plenty of tubliss systems out the for moto enduro, all my bikes have them. So if a tyre firm like Michelin can make them already.. I'm sure they can make a compound to work for peddle bikes. I guess the only thing holding them back must be extra weight, sidewall strength and rim locks. 🤷

    as soon as you hit anything with the rear tire, the foam breaks in to smaller and smaller parts. as the foam then turns into dust, it will be uneven and not what you started out with. this is for so many reasons a bad idea

  • @simonm1447

    Forklifts often use a sort of tire which has a sort of foam inside, called Superelastic or short SE.
    However these tires are heavy as hell, and the suspension is not the same as with air filled tires. Also the rolling resistance is higher, what is not a problem in this case.
    Air tires may not be perfect, but they still offer the best suspension and you can adjust the pressure to get it harder or softer.

    • @SwordFighterPKN
      @SwordFighterPKN Před 5 měsíci

      @@Ferrari255GTO - that actually will not work since there is no way the foam would go all the way around the rim. Plus the foam dries hard and can't take any shock. Just get a Tanus insert.
