The beach you saw in Chicago is the shore of Lake Michigan, one of the Great Lakes.
The five Great Lakes are Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario and they are in general on or near the Canada-United States border. They are large interconnected freshwater lakes in the east-central interior of North America that connect to the Atlantic Ocean via the Saint Lawrence River.
Lake Michigan is land locked within the United States. (Michigan; Indiana; Illinois and Wisconsin.)

The Great Lakes are all interconnected. Although the Great Lakes don’t physically touch one another, their waters all flow together in one big system. The Great Lakes are connected by close to 5,000 tributaries: a series of smaller lakes, rivers, streams, and straits flowing into larger bodies of water. The flow of water in the Great Lakes system move from one lake to another eastward, ultimately flowing into the Atlantic Ocean.
From Lake Superior, water drains into the St. Mary's River and flows into Lake Huron. Lake Huron and Lake Michigan are connected directly by the Straits of Mackinac. Lake Huron waters flow into the St. Clair River, which drains into Lake St. Clair. Lake St. Clair, in turn, drains into the Detroit River, and empties into Lake Erie. At the eastern end of Lake Erie, water flows into the Niagara River, dropping 52 meters (170 ft) as it flows over Niagara Falls and into Lake Ontario. From Lake Ontario, water flows into the St. Lawrence River and ultimately runs into the Atlantic Ocean.
In the mid 20th century, construction of the Saint Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes Waterway opened the Great Lakes to ocean-going vessels.
In addition, Lake Michigan is connected by the Illinois Waterway to the Gulf of Mexico via the Illinois River and the Mississippi River.
Commercial tug-and-barge traffic on these waterways is heavy. Pleasure boats can enter or exit the Great Lakes by way of the Erie Canal and Hudson River in New York.
Funny thing about that is that Michigan/Huron is in reality a single lake, but the early explorers didn't completely map it/them out to know that, so they named each lobe separately and now we still traditionally say it's 2 different lakes despite knowing better.

I’m a Chicago native, born and raised. Currently living in Florida, but I’m telling yall… I miss my city, it’s a world class food spot and a city with a lot of history and even with all its issues, all it’s troubles, home will always be home.
That being said. Definitely, Chicago is a food destination one shouldn’t miss when visiting America!
The Italian Beef is literally Chicago's greatest mystery as to who invented it and Chicago's most Iconic food.

The dip talked about for the Italian Beef is because it is dipped in the "gravy". Extra dip means it is dipped more than once. This make the Italian Beefs taste so very good. Come visit Chicago and enjoy these foods. Chicago is the "Windy City" because of Chicago Politics and Politicians not because of winds blowing through the city.
Well, it does have wind too off the lakes and Canada. I never thought about the political aspect, but it makes sense.
I'd say it's both the weather and the politicians.
Italian Beef is dipped in more of a beef jus than a gravy. I always use a fork when eating it because I like mine dipped. It was one of my favorites when I was pregnant with my last child and I ate it with cheese fries! Talk about eating lunch for 2! 😂
By the way, it is not called the windy city because of wind. There are places like Wyoming that are far windier at times. Yeah, Chicago can get some wind though, but the nickname came from all the long winded politicians in the area. A reporter first used it in 1876 to reference to the speakers of the time being "full of wind". The nickname stuck after that.
Chicago Style Dogs with everything on them are ordered as "gimmie a dog and Run it through the garden". The Beef sandwich is fully prepared and then Dipped again as a whole sandwich in the Au Jus .. what we call "Gimmie a Beef, Dipped" and the Maxwell Street Polish is iconic as well with the caramelized onions. All of the messy foods were served at counters so that created "The Chicago Lean" to plant both elbows on the counter...lea in with your feet planted and dig in so you didn't wear the sandwich. Leading me to the pizza... you really canot go wrong with a local pizza place anywhere n the city or the burbs. As long as you stay away from any chain place they are all a little different but the Deep dish is a meal and the pub style is for watching a Blackhawks Game drinking a few pitchers of beer with the guys.
They have to understand what giardiniera and sport peppers taste like..... It makes the sandmich and dog.... most people in the states don't know what those two things are

Chicago is really a thin crust pub/tavern style pizza cut in squares town. And some places will refuse to put ketchup on your hotdog. Italian beef with au jus is soooo good!

I live within 10 miles from Lake Michigan, but in Indiana. Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin all border Lake Michigan as well. This lake is like a fresh water sea. It's huge. It gets ocean going barges in it that bring in commodities from overseas and shipments out of Chicago as well. If you're going to Chicago, you'll want to go to one of the beaches and check it out. Maybe Navy Pier would be your best bet to see the lake.
This video made me so happy. I grew up in Chicago and lived there until I was 17. Moving to California. I’m only 21 now, But seeing people learn about some of the food of Chicago makes me happy.
I grew up in NYC and love our pizza!! But, I also lived in Chicago and I love deep dish pizza too! They're BOTH great and different. Need to eat both in your life. There's no competition with good food. Need to eat it all!

Agree. Both pizzas are good. Green peppers are not spicy! It's the huge Michigan Lake you see. Yes beaches. Yes swimming. It's way cool and fun.
As a native Chicagoland man, I can confirm; deep dish is for tourists and when family comes to visit. Day to day we are eating that delicious tavern style! Vito & Nicks (the spot he went in this video) is a great place if you're on the south side. My favorite Chicago food is the italian beef though, I always order it with sweet pepper and, of course, dipped (they dunk the whole sandwich in the jus). Al's Beef is my favorite spot.

1/2 hot, 1/2 sweet, 1/2 dipped = perfect. (fyi - 1/2 hot -- ain't chicago w/o a bit of giardiniera) I prefer Johnnie's beef. Al's is too much cinnamon for my taste.

When we were kids, living in Adison, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago) my twin brother & I used to volunteer to help our mom with the weekly laundry. Only because there was a Hot Dog Stand right next door to the Laundromat called Dog & Suds (we called it Puppies & Bubbles) because they had Great good Hot Dogs and excellent Polish Sausages and we fell in love with their Polish & Kraut w/ Mustard and an Ice Cold Mug of Root Beer which mom was happy to buy for us just for helping her with the families laundry!
We had Dog & Suds in the northern suburbs too. We called it Arf & Barf, maybe because we ate and drank too much of that good food?

As someone who grew up in Chicago this food is my childhood. I dont live there anymore and I can tell you first thing I do when I get there to see family is a Hot Dog, Italian Beef, Pizza, Maxwel Street Polish, and a Gyro. And be clear, Deep Dish pizza is for tourists. The locals eat the thin crust tavern style almost eclusively, which is also called St. Louis style haha. The sport peppers on Hot dogs are spicy but more vinegary but not bad, less than a jalapeno. The green peppers are sweet. When you get an italian beef and you got hots, you will get a spicy pepper salad, its not bad either.
Green bell peppers are in the same family as red, yellow, orange, and more rarely purple bell peppers. They are considered a sweet pepper and have zero heat. Red, orange, and yellow are the sweetest, followed by the purple and then green pepper 😊 They are very good and are a great sauteed with sweet onions and used with sausage commonly. Italian, polish, Andouille, etc. here in the States as well as Fajita filling with chicken, pork, or beef.
The title of "Windy City" comes, not from the weather conditions, but from some of the past local politicians, who were widely regarded as exceptionally "windy gasbags".
BTW, Gino's East is my fav deep dish pizza; their corn meal crust is unique, & the recipe used to be a closely guarded secret ( now on the internet ).
Gino's East is my favorite also. The interior is full of character too.

@@briankirchhoefer yeah, back in the early thru mid 70's, I worked just several doors to the east from Gino's ( 222 E. Superior). Back then, I could put away a small deep disher all by myself, but fortunately, usually had the company of a secretary from one of the Dr's. offices to help me not be such a pig. Great memories, along w/ heading over to Earl's ( Earl of Old Town ) to hear the likes of Bonnie Koloc, John Prine, & Steve Goodman, or going across Wells street to the Second City to see /hear Akroyd, Belushi, & Bill Murray before they went to SNL. Other than 'Nam still raging on, it was a pretty good time. -- I'd go back to it in a second, if I could.
I live in Illinois, not Chicago but still.... the 'peppers' are pepperoncini peppers. They aren't as much hot as they are vinegary. Really compliments, pizza, hot dogs, sausage links etc. The body of water is Lake Michigan of the Great Lakes. The tallest skyskapers outside of NYC are in Chicago. There are fantastic museums in Chicago as well. Unfortunately, Chicago has a very high crime rate. Stay in the downtown area if you ever visit! Chicago really is full of good food, culture and sports! I love to watch your family explore the USA through your videos and hope you have the time of your life visiting! ❤
I do live in Chicago. Visit the neighborhoods surrounding the city. Downtown is fun for architecture etc but the neighborhoods are where you find different cultures, foods, etc.
China Town is a must visit neighborhood.
Chicago style hot dog is all beef frank (Chicago was where the trains for cattle ended and the butchers were ready), pickles, neon green relish, tomato, maybe peppers depending on if you like them, all topped with celery salt (salt with celery seed in there). It’s known as being dragged through the garden as so much fresh produce is on there. Chicago is known as the second city full of hard working people shouldering the burden of carrying the country forward. The legendary poem is written about the city and really highlights how hardworking these people are. The city of broad shoulders. The people have to eat hardy food to keep on working and keep the cold weather from getting to them. Most of Chicago comes from Irish folks and some Scandinavian countries where they had no choice but to work hard to make something of themselves. It’s no different now as people work for what they have.

The Chicago hot dog with all the fixings became popular during the depression because there were so many toppings it became a full meal for very little money.

Green bell peppers are not spicy, but are used a lot in Italian foods like sauces and on sandwiches. They give me heart burn so I avoid them. I do love red, orange, and yellow bell peppers though. They tend to be more sweet and savory on sandwiches or in stir fry food. 💙
If bell peppers make you have heartburn be careful with using the seasoning Paprika. Paprika is normally made from Bell or Sweet peppers.

All the same pepper, just different levels of ripeness. I'm not sure why one gives you more problems than the other. Green bell peppers taste soapy to me, but not like cilantro.
The tavern-style checkerboard cut for pizza actually is ideal for sharing- You get way more slices which are smaller than normal, just like 2 or 3 bites each
Plus if someone doesn’t want crust, most slices won’t have it

Hi NZ Family. The beach that you saw is Lake Michigan along with the other 4 great lakes they contain over 20% of the world fresh water supply. I love on the other side of lake Michigan and a really clear evenings from the Michigan sand dunes you can just make out the tops of the Willis Tower, former Sears Tower and the John Hancock building. It is neat as it is 60 miles away straight across lake Michigan. Wishing you all safe and enjoyable travels to Europe and the US, can't wait to see some postings of your time here.
The Italian beef sandwich and a French dip are similar, but different. An Italian beef, the beef is usually marinated for hours, and has sweet or hot peppers in the sandwich. With the au jus you can either dip it like a French dip. Or you pour it all over the sandwich, or have the sandwich it’s self fully dipped into the pot of au jus.
only way to have a beef sandmich is with giardiniera... And the dog only wat to have with sport peppers

If I remember correctly, y'all said you were going to NYC during your trip. There are lots of Jewish delis there. Do yourselves a favor and get a corned beef Reuben sandwich on rye bread, and grab some of the celery sodas. You read that right - celery soda. I had to try one when I went there, and I couldn't believe how good they were. I never in a million years would have thought to make a celery soda, but it's actually so good. So get your corned beef + sauerkraut on rye and a celery soda at a Jewish deli. It's SO good.
Don’t pass on an authentic New York egg cream as well. Verify it’s made with U-bett’s chocolate syrup. At a drug store soda fountain counter is the best, but most kosher-style delis make them as well.
Chicago native here! I stand by all these food. Portillos is a restuarant that I love their Italian beef but any small town spot in the city of Chicago is always better. My favorite deep dish pizza place in the city is Pequods but lous is classic but tavern style is truly the classic and u can't beat it. Lake michigan is amazing and north avenue beach is the place to go in the summer
I love a good Chicago dog. But I beg to differ about Portillo's. Been there one time, and it amazed me that I could have a sandwich so dry with such a soggy bun.
spend a few days in Chicago, then travel north along the Lake through Wisconsin. Go across the upper Peninsula of Michigan and then south along the coast. You will see a little bit about America and love it.
Yes, if it's in our summer they would love Mackinac and the Upper Peninsula! Some beautiful beaches up there along Highway 2
On the Jibarito sandwich, it's not a banana, but a starchy cousin of the banana called a plantain. By the way, Chicago has 18 miles of beaches. One quibble is that of all the iconic foods all these videos mention, they always leave out Chicken Vesuvio, invented at the Italian Village restaurant.
The Chicago hotdog is AMAZING! And let's not even address how awesome their pizza is. OMG! You guys are in for a treat if you go to Chicago.
Hi. They cut the pizza in squares for when you are having a party. More people can eat and you can mix or match what you're eating without taking a whole triangle piece. When I was a kid, we would order a couple large pizzas with different toppings on each. That way everyone could get what they like and squares made them easier to share. Great show!
Sweet home Chicago! I loved Anne Slater cinnamon rolls but the foods I miss most are polish sausages and hot dogs that were sold on Maxwell street. When I lived in Japan, the first thing I did when I came back for a visit was go out to get a polish sausage.They sell them where I live now but they're not really the same. And what he calls "Tavern style pizza" (never heard that name before!) is just pizza to me: sausage, green peppers (aka bell peppers and not hot/spicy), onions, and mushrooms. Deep dish (cut in triangles) was for special occasions and date night. But pizza was for everyday -- and yes it's easier to handle -- especially piping hot! -- when cut in small squares rather than triangles. Triangular cuts we called New York style.
I went to a place called Fat Tommy’s on the south side of the city. Got a hot dog with everything, and I asked for ketchup on the side for my fries. They gave me some ketchup but in my basket of fries was a small note that said there was a link between using ketchup and a lack of intelligence. I was friggin hilarious. Also, they left out the world class steak houses.
😂 gotta have a smidget of ketchup.
When I was a penniless student in Chicago (gasp!) 50 years ago (gasp!), I was surprised by how many great eateries the city has. I ate at the original Numero Uno Pizzeria at 29 East Ohio Street with friends, whenever I could afford it. The place had about 7 tables, and they were just opening Numero Due, a block north. Now Numero Uno is a national chain.
And through the haze of nostalgia, I remember waiters dancing on the tables at a little restaurant in Greektown. Then there was the chain eatery "Dog And Suds," which sounds like a pet care facility but served massive, grease-laden Polish sausages and beer, among other things. Of course, in those days I could eat anything and not gain weight....
I grew up in Chicago and the Italian Beef sandwich, dipped in it's juices, is one of the best things on this planet. I like mine spicy.

For sure, you all need to get the Chicago-style hot dog, italian beef (dipped), deep dish pizza, and garrets popcorn for a snack. The other items on the video are fine if you have extra meals for it.
Tavern Style Pizza is cut into small squares, because originally it was free or relatively cheaply sold by the slice as a handheld food in taverns around the city. This was one of those things bars would do to get people to buy more drinks.
As for Garrett's, it is caramel and cheddar popcorn in the same bag. Garrett's has a big presence at O'Hare International Airport and I take advantage of that when invariably I have to connect planes. Also, Atlanta was right. when ordering the Italian beef sandwich, the extra dip is indeed the jus that the sandwich is originally dipped in. It's more dip on the side. The beach is from Lake Michigan.
giardiniera peppers is what is on the beef sandwich and sport peppers are on the hot dog. The city has the Chicago river going through it with Lake Michigan on its East border. I grew up there and blame it for gaining me so much weight...lol

The Great Lakes are HUGE 🙂 I live in the Twin Ports of Duluth, Minnesota/Superior, Wisconsin on the western tip of Lake Superior. When you drive north on Highway 61 you get to see how big the lake is because it goes to the horizon.
When you order food here you choose your toppings. So when you come just order it the way you want it. Plus at most places even if you want something that is not on the menu, but they have the ingredients they will make it. 😊
There's also great pizza in the south suburbs, Aurelio's Pizza is one of my faves for tavern style pizza. The Chicago dog and Italian beef sandwiches were also very big in the suburbs. BTW that was a pepperacini pepper on that polish sausage. Those peppers were real popular on the Italian beef sandwich as well. It's kind of sweet/spicy with a tangy bite.

I just happened to be in Chicago last weekend and stopped at Harold's Chicken #88, and hands down was some of the best chicken I've ever had and also awesome customer service.

The address is 134 E. 35th St.(north side of the street, in between Michigan Ave. and Indiana Ave., a half block east of Chicago Police & Fire Dept. Headquarters now called City of Chicago Public Safety Headquarters). Harold's #88 is about a half mile east of I-90/I-94 (Dan Ryan Expressway) and the White Sox Baseball field.
The bread at any restaurant in CHicago is the best I have eaten anywhere. The famous deep dish pizzas are lengendary.
Your standard sliced pizza typically yields 8-12 slices depending on it's size, which is great if you're eating with family or a few friends and everyone can have a couple slices and call it dinner. Tavern style pizza is the type of pizza you share at a bar/tavern or party and is cut into those squares because you get more of them. A person might order a tavern pizza to share at a sports bar while watching a football game and have 12+ people snacking on it while drinking beers and eating buffalo wings or sliders. It's also cut like that because the crust is cracker thin and crispy and trying to cut pie wedges out of it would blow out the entire center but cutting it in squares leaves all corners in tact.

It all looks amazing!! Chicago deep-dish yes, all manner of dogs & polish yes, and man that fried chicken looked freaking amazing!!! One bone to pick though - I'm sure that select tacos in Chicago are great, but taco capital of the world (really, over any Mexican city)? Not even taco capital of the US - San Diego, Los Angeles, border towns in AZ, NM & Texas all have authentic and outstanding tacos served everywhere from trucks and stands, to sit-down restaurants. So many, many amazing taco options that if you don't serve a fantastic taco you won't survive for long.

Yep. I live on the Central Coast in California. Within a half-mile of where I'm sitting there are 3 taco trucks, 4 taquerias and 1 sit-down restaurant.
Do not discount Chicago's Mexican scene...a third of the population of Chicago is Hispanic...so nearly 1 million...and that is not counting probably close to a million more in the suburbs..
We got San Antonio, Austin, Houston, Dallas and Mexicans make up almost half the population

Many do not realize there is and has been a large Hispanic presence in the midwest dating back to when Spain controlled nearly half of what is now the United States. Mexicans be came more prominent, especially during World War 1 and World War 2(See Bracero Program). My maternal Family side is from Nebraska. As a child in the 1960's I recall my aunts Making tortillas from scratch. An Aunt and Uncle use to own a Mexican restaurant beginning in the 1950's.
Visiting Chicago from May through September is just so amazing. Really sad you guys will miss it on your trip 😢
Had deep dish in the 70’s. When I finally moved to Chicago and lived there for many years, only had tavern style…which is more common with the locals !
Great reaction! The water at the beach is Lake Michigan, which is about 300 miles north to south, and is about 120 miles east to west. The green peppers are bell peppers, which are not spicy, but have a good flavor. Here they are referred to as "sweet peppers". The tavern style pizza cut is that way since it is meant to have with beer. They will cut it in a traditional slice if you request it that way. I always do.
I grew up close enough to the lake, Lake Michigan, one of the Great Lakes, that it was the summertime hangout from age thirteen. The lake is large enough that you cannot see the other side like an ocean. Our beach was part of a Chicago park with softball, football, basketball, tennis, and handball, fields and courts. It was half a mile long and a quarter mile wide. In the winter we used the huge parking lot to practice donuts on the snow with our cars.
I’m a native and current Detroiter. I have been going to Chicago, since 1982, at the age of 11. My sister also went to Northwestern University, outside of Chicago, and lived in Chicago for 14 years. The best Chicago pizza, is Geno’s East, and Garrett’s popcorn is amazing. When I would visit Chicago, my mother would always make me stand in line, outside of Garrett’s, so I could bring back some for my stepdad - it was his favorite. The wait was always at least an hour long.
I was just there for Brickworld Chicago. I like the Schaumburg - Lou Malnati's Pizzeria best. You absolutely need a Chocolate Cake Shake from Portillo's & get a Lemon Cake Shake too.

ive lived all over the us and i can truly say chicago stands out head and shoulders from other places when it comes to food. even just some random joint you stop into makes some delicious food. you can basically just randomly pick a place and be treated to gourmet meal.
the water is lake michigan and its the windy city because the wind come in off the lake with crazy intensity. there were days were i could lean into it and still stand.
The City sits on the edge of Lake Michigan which is one of the Great Lakes and IT IS HUGE (over 300 Miles Long and about 180 miles wide at it widest points) so you DID see a beach...there is ALSO a river that runs through Chicago as well.
The "extra dip" is the juice or au jus, that the beef sits in prior to serving. The pepper you mentioned you saw on the polish and the beef is a pepperoncini and they are delicious!
Cinnamon rolls are a breakfast item. Also, if you want ketchup on your hot dog go ahead, who cares what others think. Green peppers are not hot at all. Kind of have a tangy taste to them. They are used in a lot of dishes like pizza, sandwiches, salads, and so on.
Exactly! I'm so sick of hearing on these channels were people try to dictate what somebody's going to put on a hot dog. Like they have nothing better to do with their lives then complain about that!

That is one of the Great Lakes, Lake Michigan. It is an inland sea with connections all the way to the Atlantic, or via small ships through rivers to the Gulf of Mexico. I miss my home town and all its great food. I have everything except the Jibarito Sandwich, and that sandwich from Mr. Beef. I have had food from Mr. Beef though. Also, I always use ketchup on my hotdogs! Here's the amazing thing, this list only scratches the surface of really great foods in Chicago. I especially love the Greek Food. If you go there, go the the Psistaria in Lincolnwood, IL just on the north border of Chicago, or the Greek Islands in Greek Town. Peace
I’ve lived in Chicago for 25 years the food is amazing, another perk is you can get all these foods delivered any time, day or night. You can even get booze delivered. I think you all will also find that ours is the cleanest big cry in the USA

I grew up in Illinois. I used to think to get great food you had to go to Europe or Japan or Brazil. I don’t think that way anymore. Chicago is a top five foodie heaven… one of the great food cities in the world. You wouldn’t think it by default but just go and eat. You’ll see. I’d suggest: 1) Polish sausage, 2) then Mexican (Chicago has killer Mexican spots), 3) pizza, 4) Thai. There’s waaaaay more so leave room in your tummy.
Chicago!!!!!! if you can, definitely try and make it to a Cubs game. Wrigley field is awesome.
Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, these are all definately foods that represent the city. I've been in the city many times for Chicago Bears games and have had some of the places listed in that video, most notably Garrett's Popcorn and Lou Malnati's.

Willis Tower (everyone still calls it by its former name, the Sears Tower)

Fun fact, we also house some of the oldest national sports teams including the Chicago Bears (NFL), Chicago Blackhawks (NHL), and Chicago Cubs (MLB), as well as a couple of their respective stadiums, Soldier Field (Chicago Beads) and Wrigley Field (Chicago Cubs). I'd recommend walking by these stadiums to see some of our sports history.
Tavern style square cut pizza is just next level. The crust is thin crunchy and flakey. OMGoodness yum! Green bell peppers are not spicy but have a nice flavor. They also come in orange, yellow and red.
Something you may notice about the big cities you're visiting is that they are quite dirty in some areas, and there may be a ton of homeless people. I won't get into the politics of it, but be safe and please remember most of America isn't like that. I hope on your next American visit you'll be able to visit some smaller towns and get a better feel for the backbone of America. Most Americans are nice people for the most part, no matter where you go, though, so hopefully the citizens won't let you down and will help make your visit wonderful and memorable!

Chicago has such a variety of flavors. Whatever you fancy, you can find world class food all over the city. With that being said, Pequod's has the best Deep Dish, Al's Beef is the best place for a beef sandwich (in my opinion of course) and I feel like this video left out some of our burger places. Can't miss with an Au Cheval/Small Cheval burger... It's worth the wait I promise!
Peppers are actually native to the Americas and so yes you tend to find them across multiple cuisines here. We all use peppers in some varient in the States. Cajun, Mexican, Italian, Cuban, Soul Food, Chinese, Korean, right on down to the fried foods with fried cream cheese filled Jalapeno poppers. lol.
Some peppers are spicier than others. A lot of times they just bring a good pepper flavor to the food. For example, the pepperoncini peppers that go on an Italian Beef are a milder pepper. Their taste is hint of sweet and tangy but with a little heat. They are certainly not for hot sauces but their flavor on the beef for the sandwiches is phenomenal. You DEFINITELY need to try an italian beef in Chicago from either Mr. Beef or Al's Beef. Both are excellent choices.
I'm from the Chicago area! All of these foods are amazing and my favorites, you guys gotta make sure you try one or two when you come through. There's so much more culture surrounding this amazing city so make sure you check it out!
You need to try Giordano's Pizzeria for sure. Their medium stuffed crust deep dish pizzas are like 7 or 8 pounds
ETA: Lou Malnati's is good but they are way more expensive than Giordano's. Uno's is also expensive as well as requiring a long wait.

Another place to go is Portillo's. They have both Italian Beef and Chicago style Hotdogs. One other thing they have is THE BEST chocolate cake. AND (I haven't tried this myself) watch the video below. A chocolate cake shake. Literally they use a piece of this chocolate cake, to make the shake.

Correct! Portillo's is a great spot for visiting tourists because you can get several iconic Chicago foods in one place! Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian Beef sandwiches, Polish Sausage sandwiches, Chicago-style BBQ ribs and of course Portillo's Chocolate Cake made with mayonnaise 😉

Dipped means that the beef and bread is dipped in the juice that the beef is cooked in. Extra dipped means that it's dipped at least twice. This helps to make the bread a bit soggy and easier to eat, but that beef flavor from the juice permeates into the bread by dipping it.
The Chicago Mix on the popcorn is both the caramel and cheese in the same bag.

If you visit Chicago, make sure you visit Navy Pier, Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, the Art Institute Michigan Avenue, the Shops at North Bridge and there are too many AMAZING places to eat to list. Just go. It’s 100% worth it. 💖

The architecture of The Shedd Aquarium is reason enough to visit there, not to mention the great aquatic displays. It's my favorite building in Chicago. The Field Museum and Art Museum are great places to visit as well. The Museum of Science and Industry and Adler Planetarium were fun field trips in my school days. The Morton Arboretum is lovely.
Brookfield Zoo and Lincoln Park Zoo are nice, but San Diego Zoo in California and Fort Worth Zoo in Texas are the best. Also, Balboa Park in San Diego, California, and the Botanic Gardens in Fort Worth, Texas, are beautiful and nice respites from the noise and bustle of other attractions.
I do hope you enjoy your visit and are able to come back soon to see more of what the USA has to offer. Perhaps a month long trip around many of our National Parks. Have fun!

The 5 Great Lakes account for 21% of all the fresh water in the world. Only Lake Michigan is completely within the United States, the other four we share with Canada. They are Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario.
The French Dip and the Chicago Style Italian Beef are similar, but not the same. A French Dip is a thinly sliced roast beef sandwich on French bread with a side of jous. A Chicago Style Italian beef is Italian seasoned roast beef thinly sliced and marinated in jous on an Italian roll with sweet peppers and/or giardinera (spicy Italian pickled veggie mix). You can get it dipped in jous. It could also come with melted provolone or mozzarella and with or without a grilled Italian sausage. So, while similar, the Chicago Style Italian Beef is much more complex.
Chicago really does have excellent Mexican food. I really think it's better than what you get in California or Texas. The Mexican population in Chicago are mostly fairly recent immigrants, so the food is very authentic.
You can get food from pretty much every international cuisine in Chicago, and it's all very good. There's excellent Greek, Indian, Caribbean, Korean, and African restaurants, and also lots of good old American food.
I dunno... I lived on the border in El Paso, TX and the food there really couldn't be beat. I live in Seattle now and have yet to find any really good Mexican food... but I ditched my car which means I'm limited to transit spots... I probably need to venture further afield. Chicago has such great food options, though!

I love my city...he is not wrong...great food everywhere. The population of Chicago is around 30% Mexican so there are a LOT of great Mexican restaurants. If you ever visit Chicago please plan the trip for the summer months...there is no better city that celebrates summer like Chicago. The Italian beef is sort of similar to a French dip except much more seasoned and the entire sandwich is dipped in an Italian au jus...messy but delicious.

Ummmm No... Latino yes.. 27%.. but you call a Guatemalan a Mexican.. or a Puerto Rican a Mexican or a Cuban a Mexican and you will have a fight on your hands bubosso.. What Americans call green peppers are green, unripe bell peppers. Bell peppers are what are called "capsicums" in Australian, New Zealand and Indian English. They are not hot. They are sometimes also called sweet peppers in America.
I was born in Chicago (shih kahhh go The middle syllable is exaggerated by real Chikahhhgoans.) but I was forced to leave before I was two because I refuse to eat a hot dog without ketchup.

I'm with you, Denz! Everybody is always crazy for super hot super spicy these days, the hotter the better. But I'm a firm believer in the actual tastes and flavors of the actual foods without the singed tongue and indigestion afterward. The real test to me is how does it stand up without all that spiciness to hide behind? Great video, guys.
I don't mind a little spicy now and then, but I can't have much of it due to gastric problems. Besides, as you said, I like to actually taste and enjoy what I am eating, not fighting off waves of burning pain.
Same here. I find it hard to eat out as almost everyplace is putting some kind of hot pepper/spice into the ingredients. Some Caribbean place I went to eat, specifically asked not to have spice. I don’t think they knew the meaning of no spice :(. I can see why there are ambulances at restaurants sometimes.
There is a river that flows through Chicago (the Chicago River), but it's on the shore of Lake Michigan one of the largest lakes in the world. It has several beaches along the shore.
Chicago runs along a portion of Lake Michigan. At a certain point, Chicago's leaders decided to keep the land along the lake open as park, trails and higher learning institutions (museums, arboretum, aquarium, etc...), and Lake Shore Drive runs parallel to the lakefront. If you are looking for something to do just head toward the lake. A lot of stuff is within walking distance near the lake (well if you are in generally good health) and anything else can be reached by train (the El) or by cab. They didn't even touch on the large Irish, Polish, German, and Greek (to name a few) communities with their unique Chicago flavors. The Taste of Chicago is a great way to try a wide variety of restaurants. It's basically a food festival in Grant Park with music and local restaurants and activities throughout.
As a Chicagoan I eat my hotdogs with ketchup mustard and relish.

Lived here all my life and love ketchup on hot dogs & brats. I don't really like mustard. Just ask for ketchup for your fries.

I lived in Chicago for nine years and they do have a wonderful variety of great food and some of the best pizza in the world!! The best hot dog I've ever had was tbe Chicago Dog I had in the Sears (Willis) Tower around 1990. It was unforgettable.
