Episode 112
Dragon Spirit: The New Legend is one of the most exciting vertical shoot 'em up games for the NES! It was originally an arcade game developed by Namco, but the NES version isn't just a copy of the arcade experience, its a new game that plays like a remixed version of the original!
So how did this game get made, and how is it related to Adventure Island II? In today's episode we'll find out, then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* The best way to complete EVERY AREA!
* How to win using the GOLD or BLUE Dragon!
* Secret Codes for extra lives or a Stage Select!
* Where to find hidden 1-UPs!
* How to make all SIX Maidens appear!
* What do all of these power-ups do? We'll find out!
* How to defeat EVERY BOSS, with or without full power... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

Nothing like waking up early with a cup of coffee and watching some classic games, kinda reminds me of when I was a kid waking up early on the weekend before anyone else and firing up the old Super Nintendo and start playing away. When times we’re simpler
played this at a friends house in the early 90s. very cool
I watch these after work, very relaxing to just kick back and watch someone jam these old games. Thanks mate.
Hands down one of the finest soundtracks on the NES. I remember one NES buyer's guide that rated every aspect of a game on a 1 to 10 scale (graphics, music, gameplay, etc) and Dragon Spirit was one of the few games to rate a 10 out of 10 soundtrack.
It is good!
It's because the original arcade game had a sick soundtrack to begin with, and the NES port team did a good job making it sound great on the NES hardware despite the limits. Some tracks are completely "different" despite being the same basic tune as they found ways to make it sound particularly good NES style. I actually like some tracks better on this game vs the original.
I love both the arcade game and the NES version. Great music, it has such a good soundtrack.
Dragon Spirit was a 'budget title'. I had it because it was affordable for my family, it was a great game and I loved it. Thanks for the upload~!
This is by far one of my favorite schmups for the NES. You get to fly around as a dragon and blast things with fire breath! And there are even different dragon types, too.
I love how the bad ending low-key implies you're a big baby who needed to be read a beddie-bye stowy before going to bed. Even when they were being nice, old school Nintendo hard games knew how to rub salt in the wound.
I dont know how your able to be so consistent with how you do these videos but hats off to you and your production and schedule.
Its incredible how consistent YCBVG is with its content. Not to how many games on this channel have an extreme difficulty curve. I am very cursious if we will ever transition into the Playstation/GameCube/Xbox/Dreamcast Generation? Not that there isn't a ton Retro content from this Generation left to cover.
@alexkeeton5624 I would place ps1,saturn and dreamcas as retro. I would be all for a full video on Tales of destiny or castlevania symphony of the night.
You started posting videos to this channel on almost the same month when I first moved into my new house, it's been an unusual (and cool) way for me to keep track of time passing... Normally, I have real difficulty keeping track of events but with your memorable weekly submissions, it's been a great way for me to compensate. A bit unintentional, but you have my gratitude all the same.
I remember this game from back in the NES era. I rented it all the time, and only recently found it at a gaming store. Good time!
Thanks for the video!
The only downside is the music. It's fantastic, but sadly it made me realize I never made up that tune I was thinking of it from this game.
One of my favorite NES games. I had this one as a kid. I have it via Xbox today.
As far as I am concerned? This is the best shooter on the NES. The perfect combination of story and gameplay and balanced difficulty. I asked for one thing when I was 6 and got this instead. I'm so grateful. Why does this game not get any attention? I don't get it!
Love you shows, my favorite part is seeing games like this that I never heard of back in the day
I LOVED this game back in the day!!!
This video is fantastic, what an amazing and thorough walkthrough! This has been one of my favorite games and soundtracks since I was 5 years old and have played it quite a bit over the past 30+ years. Thank you for explaining how to get the maidens at the end of each level, I get so mad every time I get a shadow and now I finally understand!
-Cast
this soundtrack was crazy good. the jungle theme is one of my alltime fav video game musics
You should ABSOLUTELY do the Capcom classic: Legendary Wings.
I doubt you'll tell me anything I don't already know about playing that game. Unlike this game, where I watched this vid just to learn all the stuff I couldn't figure out. Because I got this game years after I had time to figure it all out for myself. Thank you! But really, Legendary Wings is an A+ game imo. Not too long but great replay value. Love your channel. Keep on ROCKIN'!!!
I remember getting two copies of this for a birthday, so one of the gifters exchanged it for Crystalis. Definitely a double win for me!
Thats a solid Bday
Man what an awesome channel. I grew up in the age of the Snes first so many aspects of NES don't appeal to me, but it's really nice to watch a super chill flawless walk-through lol. Feels satisfying.
I owned Dragon Spirit for the Turbo Grafx 16 I didn’t know the NES had a version! Glad I found this channel recently it is already one of my favorites!
This is one of my favourites, thank you!!
Good guide! Im a fan of both Nes and Arcade Dragon Spirit.
Not lying at all but this was my most played game when I was a kid. The music just felt so wonderful to fly around in.
This just brought back a buried memory. My mother bought this for me when it came out. I was one of those who thought it was an RPG, but it will still really fun. It was one of the first games I ever finished
My father showed me xevious in 96. It’s now my character name in most games i play. Which led me to love dragon spirits playstyle.
one of my most favorite games I had as a kid growing up. My mom still has an illustrated "book" I wrote for school about Dragon Spirit. The music was probably the most memorable part for me.
I remember sitting in Walmart wanting a new game. I begged for the cheapest game and promised to clean my room before playing it. My parents caved and Dragon Spirit was mine. It turned out to be one of my dad's favorite games. Best deal he ever made.
We did beat it when I was a kid. Recently, I pulled it back out and had a perfect game (didn't get hit).
Nice! Definitely one of the hardest shooters (for me, at least) that I remember playing as a kid, especially in the arcade.
The NES version is tricky, but the arcade version is crazy-difficult.
Both the arcade version of Dragon Spirit and its sequel, Dragon Saber, were rereleased on PS4 and switch as part of the Arcade Archives series
I once had this game CIB sealed, and actually only played my friend's game. It's also a fun arcade game as well!
59:20 Wow... I did NOT see that coming! Why in the world would someone allow that function on a wholesome ending, I will never know.
That is not a face a dragon should make when it's their sister... >.>
I had NO idea this was available on the Switch - THANK YOU for this! I bought the original arcade version of it, which I never played before, but I wanted to play this version and I've been using an emulator. The Switch port is smooth as butter in comparison, and that makes it a bit easier to play.
Your so skilled at these games it's awesome, question?? How long does it take you to get a game down or mastered? just curious...
Werewolf: The Last Warrior please🙏
How did i not see this 😳
59:11 Lol the dragon also gets anime happy eyes and starts drooling too…. Along with the wind blowing up the chicks dress.
I loved this game as a kid it's nice to see it getting this kind of attention. I beat it with the gold dragon a lot and while I got close I could never beat it with the blue dragon.
This was the first game I ever remember seeing a commercial for, and might also be the first game I ever beat... as the gold dragon, but still. I've played through this a ton of times, but this is the first I've ever seen the exclamation point power-up; you always managed to teach me something new!
This game rules. Glad to see you covering it!
I had this game and played through is so many times. Great fun!
I found this channel with maybe only five or six videos on it and I've been in love with it since then keep up the great work.
I know you might not see this now but you are the only thing to make traffic barrable, I just have to open the app, pull up the playlist and just hit somewhere all your walkthroughs are gems
I got this game back in 1989 when it came out. I got it for a Christmas Present back then. I was only in 7th Grade in Middle School at the time. (This game was one of the few Christmas Presents that I found hidden away in my parent's bedroom before Christmas. The game was sitting right there on a top shelf in a closet for anyone to see. I knew what I was going to get for that Christmas about a month or 2 before December 25th).
Anyways, I have a lot of great memories with this game. I can not even tell you how much 80's Metal I listened to when I was playing this game in the late 80's on the NES? I had a stereo system right beside the TV. So when playing this game, I would put on Iron Maiden, early Def Leppard, or some other Metal band. It added to the intensity of the gameplay.
This game is really going to test your dodging skills. A lot of enemy fire is going to come at you fast. It is not quite a bullet hell game, but at times it is not far from it. Challenging but fair. A lot will be coming at you, especially on the 4th level / The Graveyard around at the end before you get to the skeleton dragon boss. Although in this game, there are about 3 or 4 places in this game that are very hard if you do not know what to do. Reminds me of the later vertical levels in Lifeforce. Especially that 8th level of flying in the dark. The entire screen goes dark and you can not see anything in front of you at all. It is too easy to ram into something. The 6th level has an ice field that will speed up when you first enter it. You will be going very fast and you have to burn any and all ice crystals in your way. If not, it is a quick game over. The 5th Level / The Spider Cave has a few very tight passageways to barely move in. Too easy to hit the sides of the sharp rocks. Another very quick game over. The 3rd level / The Jungle has about 10 thorn bushes that will come after you and chase you all over the entire screen if you do not destroy them as soon as they show up. Make sure to always have at least the white dragon or the green dragon. Best weapons in the game. Also be sure to have at least 2 or 3 heads when flying around as well. A lot of enemies will come at you fast. Without good flames, you are a sitting duck. There are a lot of weapon powerups. They come constantly throughout the whole game. The only problem with this game is that there is little or no health items. If you get hit about 3 times it is a fast game over. Each level stage does not renew your health. You go into each stage with the same health that you had from the previous stage. Basically if it moves on the screen, burn it with fire. Some people have said over the years that this game is Gun-Nac with dragons. Gun-Nac put to Dungeons & Dragons. I can somewhat see that.
I played this game a lot in the late 80's on NES. Usually on The Gold Dragon mode / the easy mode with limited levels. The Blue Dragon mode / the full game was much harder. Now these days, this same NES game is on Nintendo Switch in the Namco Museum vol. 1 game.
allllright - love the mario paint into rough rough rough rough rough rough rough meow - as always - keep it going - congrats on the new website too :)
Always makes my day better to see a new ycbvg video
It's so fun to watch cause they come out on Saturday or Sunday usually so I always eat lunch while watching one of these vids
The same vibes in the Amiga classic Apidya. The hero in that one transforms into a hornet for a scrolling shmup. And that box cover features him as a sword weilding warrior set on an action/adventure type quest.
I love all of your videos. I don't know how long I'm going to be around for, but if I stop liking these vids it's not because I stopped liking your vids. I love all of these walk-throughs, thank you so much for your work.
Ayyy on a Sunday? This is going to get me through work today
Thank you for your work mate I look forward to these so much I will be joining the patron asap
One of my favorite games for the NES
Nice video. Very beautiful game
You are the Bob Ross of retro games!
Great job
I was just thinking of this game from my childhood and thought, 'This was a pretty tough game. I wonder if I could beat it today...' Thanks for the vid!
Bro, your content is excelent. I know there is a Discord community and a Patreon Membership to chose your next videos. But I would really love to see some content about Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior IV. It is one of my favourite games on the NES. By the way, you are amazing, greetings from Argentina!
He has done the first three, so the fourth one is coming. In his Patreon video, he showed a vote that included Dragon Warrior IV.
@@jeremiahthomas8140 Oh, that's good news. Thanks!
In Area 7 you can shoot those 2. Look at my gameplay of the game. And you can use the upgrade with the 2 little dragons by your side too. They don't have a hit box so no damage for them.
Made my day this game and Mike Tyson's punch out where the first nes games my parents bought me good time s
Love the music in this
Nice video! Never heard of this one before, but I always appreciate a shooter that opts for a non-sci-setting. Sometimes needing to not be in full-powered condition to get some of the maidens sounds like a pretty interesting idea.
I absolutely love this game!
Oh awesome! I'm awake for the release time for once! :D And it's a game I don't know and have never heard of. Funky! Time for a midnight snack and a new UCBVG video! XD
What part of the world do you live in
@@connaoconna4720 Australia my lad. It's now 2:13 am as I'm writing this (aprox an hour after you posted your comment).
London 4-20
Where do you think he is
And what a great channel
Where do you think he is
And what a great channel
@@connaoconna4720 EDIT: Ment to ask, thats 4:20 PM on Sunday tho, yeah? Cos it's Monday Morning here in Australia right now. :)
He's not in Australia if I had to guess, due to him always releasing between 12am and 6am my time. Where exactly? *shrug* Dunno, I'm sure if I wasn't so tired I could figure it out somehow, but sleep is defiantly needed.
I was lucky enough to catch this channel on it's first, maybe 2nd released video ever. It's cool for me too, cos I wake up most Monday mornings and get to catch the new episode, like when I used to get up for the early morning cartoons in the 90's. :D
Time to take my insomniac ass too bed finally. G'night mate. Pleasure talking with you. :)
I love you for this one.
This was probably my favorite NES top down shooter when I was a little kid, haha. Awesome seeing this.
Gun Nac for me! Both Are great
You answered the one and only one question I ever had about this game - what causes maidens to appear or not appear. I knew the first one always did, and it makes sense regarding the two that are RNG, but the ones where they only show up if you're not maxed? Holy shit. I never saw that anywhere else I looked. Thank you.
28:13 Oh, gracious! I don't want that.
Wow, I'm on time for this :)
Awesome!😊
Never even heard of this game, looks cool though and somewhat familiar. I think I saw something like this in an Arcade once.
I really loved this game
Chévere. Gracias por el video.
Lots of good memories playing this one. Never got passed level 6.
Still blows me away how fast dogs get big
The NES version is the best version. It’s hands down one of the top 10 games of all time. The OST alone is among top 5.
Shining Force would be an amazing video!!!!!!
This is my favorite NES games ever! I liked it better than SMB 3!
Milon’s Secret Castle next please
Maybe I should give it a try on the Namco Museum Archives! (I got both entries)
And a correction - Dragon Saber can be played on the Arcade Archives via PS4 or Nintendo Switch!
man you make it look so easy :D
that was awesome and it was nice to see my name in the video
Playing this as a kid I could never figure out why it was gold sometimes and blue others! Thanks for the info!!
Amazing ost
I played this game SO much as a kid, absolutely loving how wild I could make my dragon look with three heads and so on. But I was also so young that the idea of facing that final boss frightened me, haha. I also thought the gold dragon was cooler, because it was gold, but of course powerups would turn it white or green anyway.
Ahh, I was hoping it’d be the TG16 port! 😅
Jackie Chan and Adventure Island 3 were both in the Big20 last month!
This was one of the only NES games me and my sister could beat when we were kids. The others were double dragon 2 and turtles 2 the arcade. I got to the final stage in the original Mario bros but, never beat it. It's kind of a tragic story why I didn't beat mario
This was such an under rated game back in the day!
This game was running on the underpower hardware of the NES, if it would of released with the Genesis the title would of held truer to the arcade and had been on the radar for a greater acceptance. That is why it considered TRASH, blame the loyalist of Nintendo for this monstrosity. This game is nothing compared to the purist of the arcade.
Hey my friend thank you for playing theses games, a lot of your videos have enlightened me on concepts and tricks. Could you try Super SpyHunter for the NES. please. I got to level 4 and got stuck. Thank you for listening. Peace out dog lol
I remember when my dad bought this game for me I thought it was going suck, turns out it became one of my favorites.
This was my first game along with bionic commando
G.U.N.S.M.O.K.E.
gunsmoke is awesome
I never hear anyone shout out Gunsmoke, yooo in my top 5 games, I play Gunsmoke at least once a week, I still can't beat it without turbo
He did gunsmoke I believe
He done did it, son.
I've been watching ucbvg for quite some time but I don't remember a G.U.N.S.M.O.K.E. episode, I searched and didn't see it either. But I could be wrong, I would love a link to that!
I know you mainly do NES stuff, but I’d love to see you do Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
For me, it’s one of the greatest games of that generation. I put it on the same shelf with Terranigma for ‘Amazing Games Few Have Played’
Never played it but it looks like fun
Do recca next hehe
I had this game! I remember the game over screens and music used to creep me out...
Dragon Spirit and Legendary Wings were my go-to shooters on the NES, Not as good as Gradius or Life Force but they had character.
There’s a namco machine that has this game where I work and I’ve been playing on my breaks after hours.
Why did I NEVER hear about this game or come across this in my 40 years of NES adventuring?!?😮
Dragons and dinosaurs?!?
Queue meme of little kid screaming "F**K YEAAAAH!"
Of of my favorite games as a kid. Thanks for the member berries.
doggo goes mew :D
Underrated soundtrack
