An interesting piece of this theory that I've seen nobody mention is that in the book Fearless, we are introduced to Mrs. Puff's "con man" cousin Moe Blowfish. He has not appeared in the television series, however, in the original storyboard for "Lighthouse Louie," we see an old newspaper that has a photo of Mrs. Puff and it is captioned "Bobbi Blowfish." This suggests that Puff's real name is Blowfish, a name she shares with her cousin Moe (who never changed his name, despite being a con man.)
Interesting catch. Also Mrs. Puff's current full name is Poppy Puffs, and "Poppy" does sound similar to "Bobbi"
In the episode, 'Doing Time', there's another line that alludes to Mrs. Puff's criminal past. During her delusion where Spongebob and Patrick are in the chilli, Spongebob asks why Puff doesn't wanna leave prison. To which she said:
"I like it here. These are my people!" Referring to the prisoners

I have a kind of mini theory on who the old student is. I think it might be Stanley, spongebobs cousin. He's way more destructive than spongebob and probably could have caused that accident with the "lawyer" fishes family member. I also dont think the show has told us where Stanley lives so he could have lived in New Kelp City.

ok quick mini theory now that I’ve thought about this for a while: I think Bottomfeeder is working with the network broadcasting the Spongebob reality show. In the real world (our world, not the universe Spongebob takes place in), Spongebob’s boating school was added bc the Nick producers wanted school to be a main focus of the show, even though Spongebob is an adult. Therefore, in order to keep him in this very specific school environment, the producers made sure that Spongebob would never pass. In order to keep the cast consistent, they’d also make sure that his teacher (Mrs Puff) would never quit. They just so happened to find a teacher who pissed off a warden who was originally from out of town, and who would do anything to make her life a living hell. Keeping her with a student who drives her crazy for the rest of her life is the perfect way to do that. His interests align with the network, so they both play along with each other in order to both get what they want.

I have an addition/change of this theory. Everyone is missing the fact that the pictures on her wall are of loved ones. I think Mrs. Puff only changed her last name. The mysterious mustached fish may be Mrs. Puff's husband. The lighthouse filled with her stolen goods has, and Alex mentions, a ring. I think the ring belong to her husband. This makes even more sense if the warden is related to the mustached fish and that is the reason he tortures Mrs. Puff. He feels betrayed by someone he trusted with his family.
Being sick at 1:00 AM makes me overthink things.

I think this may also fit in with the TV theory. As they (the in show filmmakers) want Mrs.Puff to be a constant character and she’s very entertaining. IF the warden didn’t lose a loved one to Mrs.Puffs long lost student, could he be being payed off like Mr.Krabs?
My theory is that he was payed by the SpongeBob crew for the Krabs vs plankton episode if you hear carefully when SpongeBob mentions the driving lessons you hear he said "she" so the former warden was a female si probably the SpongeBob crew found out a way to make him the warden and he use that position to not only fulfill his revenge but to go with the shows agenda too since the prision it's a recurrent place in the show
I remember when watching the show again, 20+ age, I realized how erratic and crazy Ms Puff performance in the show actually was, didnt notice how uncomfortable to see it could be until I grew up.

I also noticed another detail that speaks for this theory. In the episode where Spongebob and Patrick got their whirly brains, there's a scene showing Mrs. Puff and Mr. Krabs going on a date. Mrs. Puff calls Mr. Krabs by his first name Eugene, but Mr. Krabs calls Mrs. Puff Mrs. Puff. Now, why would anyone call the person they are dating by their last name? That's just weird, especially since Mrs. Puff calls Krabs Eugene. That's because Mrs. Puff isn't her real name and she hasn't told Mr. Krabs her first name because she has to hide her real name. Even the people creating the SBSP wikipedia entries can't seem to agree on her real first name. Some articles say it was Poppy, other call Mrs. Puff Penelope 🤔 I'm sure this can't be a coincidence

To anyone who says his theories are overboard, I want to point out that the writers of TV shows do usually write out complete character backstories before having them interact in the episodes. It’s possible that, in this case, Mrs. Puff’s backstory was already written out, and they incorporate it into the episodes, while still having the main focus on the plot.

There was a recent episode called "Labor Day" and during it Sandy gives all of the fish some trees and Mrs. Puff got an tree. When Mrs. Puff got her tree she said "Finally someone to talk about that Kelp city thing" or something like that and then all of the owners ditch the trees and when Mrs. Puff does the tree goes a phone and calls the police saying "Hello, police? I think I got a lead on that Kelp city incident." So I think there is something else going on about it.

I once watched a theory that Patrick is actually smart and pretending to be dumb to pretend to be someone else and not to live to work etc and have freedom.
But he is hiding his past as he is sometimes shown to be more smarter than sandy and once she and others catches up on him he acts completely dumb yet again to hide the truth.

@@vlogsbycora2035 I think the “loved one” that we saw on the painting was actually the person Mrs. Puff gave the license to. He drove around recklessly, and he ended up crashing and dying. Richard was his brother/father, and he blamed Mrs. Puff for giving up on him, which led to his death. He wanted to teach her a lesson to never give up on a student, so he forced her to teach Spongebob, another “incompetent” student.

However, I never got to see all the SpongeBob episodes and even those I'd seen, they were obviously not in order. The background of the tv show always seemed to be not detailed since it only has flat colours, though as this video pointed out there are many details that associate incidents and characters. So, basically, I'm under the impression that people who haven't watched the whole thing, including me, and people who have watched it several times, didn't really know these hints and assumptions.

One thing I have never quite figured out, if Spongebob is the one who drives Mrs. Puff to go insane, who was the student who was doing the same thing in New Kelp City? Because clearly if she is running from her past there had to have been a culprit before Spongebob
following this theory, maybe the fancy guy in the photo IS the student who mrs. puff prematurely passed. I mean how could she get a photo of some random car accident victim? (unless she stole it lol) maybe he was the student she passed and he ended up dying during his reckless driving spree, and that's his license photo. this was the warden's relative and he blamed mrs. puff for that relative's death. that'd at least explain why we've never seen of that guy in the show to my knowledge besides the 1 photo

My personal SpongeBob driving theory: SpongeBob has bad eyesight. He regularly wears glasses for jellyfishing, and is also sometimes shown wearing them for reading (impairment in both close-range and distance vision is a sign of astigmatism). For some reason, he never thinks to wear the glasses for driving. In the movie, he wore contacts, which explains why he drove the Patty Wagon perfectly.

Mrs. Puff is the only SpongeBob character I'd actually want to see get a spinoff. Not a long-running show lasting multiple seasons, mind you, but just a mini-series going into her shady past (maybe even finally showing the events that led to Mr. Puff's demise).
