    man i have never been a virtua fighter person out of early saturn days. When I tried this VF5 on PS5 i was directly hooked. This is the less feature-rich fighter yet the more engaged I have been with the core online experience. I sure prefer it over Tekken 7 or 8, it is just so satisfying to play.

    What's so amazing about VF is how much it puts the onus of the game back on the player. You truly feel like it's player versus player, not character versus character. If you understand the system mechanics, you understsnd Virtua Fighter. And that's when the beauty of the game truly starts to present itself.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  Před 9 měsíci +8

      That is a great summary of the game mechanics. Yes there are some sort of match up type of stuff probably, but that's so small and adjustable that essentially it's much more about you understanding the other player's preferences than what their character is up to. Since the move sets for all the characters are so fluid and adaptable.

    • @ShadowBlade79
      @ShadowBlade79 Před 9 měsíci +7

      @TheElectricUnderground And EVERY move in a character's moveset is useful and important. You don't get as much bloat as you would see in something like Tekken. It all flows and works together, which is like poetry to watch.

    I will always respect a company that fights to preserve its gameplay roots instead of selling the essence of their franchise to satisfy the masses! This game is just brilliant because I hate when you can just mash the buttons and win anyway. This game is made in a way, that you will feel a significant progress after playing it- you learn to feel the game instead of just memorising lines of input like in Tekken. When it comes to pure gameplay, this game should be celebrated as a king of all fighters because nobody realises how much work needs to be put into balancing such precise games, whereas tekken is just memorise a few long lines and that’s it. Tekken is like Two people yelling their best arguments at each other without understanding. Virtua Fighter is about two gentleman carefully listening and replying/arguing accordingly. Tekken is a circus showdance, VF is like Tango! You need to sync with this game and once you do, you won’t wanna dance anything else:)

      @@shenelljohnson74 So you claim it’s better to sacrifice game quality, depth and challenge for the sake of satisfying the masses?! I would rather be left behind with quality content then be a monkey that follows latest trends-because those are not here to challenge you, but to play with your superficial senses. Everything is about making money and people are just a product. Those who won’t see it will be the ones who kill good quality gaming. It’s like saying it’s better to have an average teacher and all students who pass with C’s than having a hard teacher who pushes even 5% to A’s but let’s part of the class fail. Obstacles help us evolve, and feeding our comfort zones just prolongs our ignorance. Which is better? I think the gaming trends are clear and I wish gaming studios went more for quality content than sales, and if this is the trend, then it’s RIP great games, and I will rather avoid modern meaningless and lazy game design and enjoy the great stuff from the past. With the trends today, new gen of lazy developers will hardly ever surpass the great designers from the past. Just look on CZcams at: Soul ve Soulless Resident Evil 4 comparison! Greatly shows how even top studios today don’t have the same touch for detail, not mentioning the lazier game design. The same can he said about Super Mario 3 vs Mario Wonder- the challenge slowly disappears and game become so superficial. I hope you can see what I mean and that more players will realize that we should voice our opinions louder to save high quality gaming- arcade design hadpurpose in balancing difficulty, which is gone today and replaced by meaningless running, expanding the world but decreasing game density, monetisation in everything, decreasing challenge so that people do t complain about difficulty-all bad marketing. Back then you had to learn,nowadays a spoiled brat will cry that a game is too hard and can create a wave of hate. Devs today are influenced by social media and their creative process is thus influenced-not in a good way. I feel now we have a decline in good gaming and it’s gonna be more and more rare to play as great games as before.

    I didn't 'get into' Virtua Fighter until 4EVO for PS2 because that training mode was mindblowing. I was a Tekken bro since part one, mowed lawns in the summer heat to save up and get a Playstation 1 so I could experience Tekken. I was pretty good. Most folks that talked shit about me playing Tekken at worst had me in a draw with them, even guys that studied frames. I didn't study a single goddamned frame situation in Tekken yet I could 'feel' the bits of the characters I played over time that just 'seemed to work' and thus you build a strategy around those moves that just seem to get away with murder in terms of priority and range.
    Virtua Fighter is just stacks and stacks and stacks of meta games of rock paper scissors and each character's tackling of those metagames is just...idk, i love games that have a simple ruleset that has infinite explorability. And to me, that's Virtua Fighter. The way I explain it to folks who ask me what I think about the two, I say Tekken is checkers. It's really fun, it can get really competitive, but Virtua Fighter is chess and between checkers and chess, only one of those games is internationally known to be taken extremely serious not only by players, but by statisticians, etc. It's that kind of game.

    What's hilarious about this is that Harada himself is one of the biggest VF fans out there, so much so that Tekken always has and will continue to be inspired by the VF series, even recently the new mechanic that was added to Tekken 7 (wall crump/stagger) and Tekken 8's new Arcade Quest are direct inspiration from VF4/Evolution.

    I had only tried the training modes and got confused before, but I gave the game another go thanks to this video and so far I LOVE IT. There's a lot of fun from just getting the basics and mashing buttons from there, but you can feel the additional depth at your fingertips waiting to be explored.
    Comparing to my experience with Tekken, there's far less character matchups I need to keep track of thanks to the smaller roster (not a popular selling point but it can make a game easier to learn). There's no required Korean back dashing. The ring-outs make sidesteps and your overall position on the stage matter beyond wall combos. And the moments you can't control your character are very short, giving you little time to think so you have to rely more on fighting with your instinct rather than planning.
    It feels great to find a 3D fighting game that I enjoy, with a community that I can still engage with.

    VF nailed the one thing every other fighting game has been trying to desperately do in the age of accessibility obsession. The concept of Complexity through simplicity. 3 button fighter, there aren't many motion inputs, the only really hard character to use is Akira which is ok if he's the sole hard character to use. Everyone has a throw game, VF doesn't have totally useless strings like in Tekken which become obsolete after the green ranks. And Side stepping actually works ladies and gentlemen! Ring outs and throws are your comeback mechanics.
    And it's actually a more aggressive game than Tekken...just saying, you don't need the developers adding a braindead mechanic like the heat system in T8 in order to force aggressive play with more moronic 50/50s.
    If VF6 had cool new edgy characters and badass character redesigns of the legacy cast then i think VF would be significantly more popular among the casual audience with the visual presentation alone.

    • @TheElectricUnderground

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  Před 9 měsíci +25

      yeah and it's not just that it's sophisticated, I think the main barrier to it being commercially viable is how fundamental it is. Like is said the key to tekken being popular (outside of stuff like presentation, which I think VF5 looks great so that's not an issue) is the amount of big sticks the game has for new players. Like in tekken, you can get stupidly far in that game just spamming moves and running a really basic set play over and over. Whereas in VF, your gonna get blown up for that, but the answers on how to play well are more overall fighting game concepts, rather than in tekken where you can just practice a 30 hit combo for 40% damage.

I'd argue Tekken 7 is harder than VF5:FS and much more complicated and yet it's been very successful. VF used to be very hard but Sega making it so much easier with the later versions hasn't changed things. There's a lot more to it.

  • @darknova7863

    VF's problem is that when its hot none of the actual VF players get a voice like we should, we need a big push for actual VF players to speak on VF. The fact that someone said it has no neutral(TK player), (anime player said) easy combos, and (typical non-VF players) try to base it off other games instead of actually learning the game. Another thing is funny how such a trash game had such an amazing GF at Evo Japan and it has no comeback mechanic something a lot of new school folks hate on. Also, we as a community are quite welcoming for the most part, are we perfect no but if you want games folks will help and you can play anyone usually as long as they are on and in the lobby folks are chill. As for someone who went to Jaan and played the Japanese VF players they are some of the most down-to-earth and kindest people ever VF is my favorite game due to the life journey I was able to embark on. I had the honor to meet a lot of Japanese players and man I am happy to have made so many friends. Also, people say they want VF6 but why most people don't play what they are given, I want VF6 BADLY but in the business sense it isn't sound to do so. Another thing I love about VF5US is that it references the Old Club Sega the replay feature on the min screen was something they did at the arcade before that closed down. I love this game so much but man I can't make already a big comment bigger. I will say I am very happy for this video and I look forward to playing you as well thanks for sharing your beloved opinion on one of our favorite games.

I am a Tekken player but tbh would prefer to jump ship to a new VF title because Tekken has strayed too far from a grounded martial arts sim to crazy anime fighter (aesthetics not mechanics).

I like Tekken also I like it a lot and even though I am better at VF my Tekken not weak I am no pro but I usually get to I am alright. overall I find it funny how a game gets so much hate but then the game you like takes from it and the creator Harada himself loves VF. TTT2 I believe he said he swapped all the stages with VF music, DOA is based off Vf, and SF legends like Fudo and Zangief got praised for their skill because of them also playing Virtua Fighter. But VF is trash guys hahahaha

      @@havocwingplzgId argue Tobal #1 did it first. Directed by the director of the first Virtua Fighter and the first Tekken (Seichi Ishii).
      He also improved the grapple function in that game over Tekken and VF.
      Only game I seen come close was Konami's Kensei: Sacred Fist (underrated game) with its grappling and reversals.
      I have no idea why Tekken remains so simplistic with theirs when Tobal wrote the blueprint almost 30 years ago
      But yeah KBD just looks goofy AF to me in Tekken. Just makes the game look choppy and glitchy. Why can't they implement smoother 3D movement it's ridiculous they're purposely keeping in archaic design.

      Oh yeah that is painful, no doubt about it. For me the improved netplay, graphics, and effects, keep US as the best, BUT, if it had a proper quest mode that would be perfect. So the game is amazing, but yes the lack of a quest mode hurts. And sadly you can't really play the quest mode of vanilla 5 either, since vanilla 5 is SO DIFFERENT from Ultimate Showdown game balance and even movement wise. Vanilla 5 is much more like VF4, so I'd just play VF4 quest mode, which is amazing.

    Yes, Soul Calibur is in the worst shape because of all the bloat. Meters, soul charge, supers, GI tied to meter, counter hits on movement, guard break attacks, guard crush, lethal hits, just guard, reversal edge... 3d fighting games are complex enough without all of this. Everything they do piles rewards on players for mindless aggression. I don't want to manage resources, I want to read and outwit the other guy. In SC2 I could block the other guy all day, it was tense and fun opening people up; now even in Tekken there's chip damage.
    I just want a pure 3d fighter to play without resources. Virtua Fighter adding meter would be pretty sad.

    Absolutely love VF, I first played the series back in 1994, there was a movie theater lobby that VF1 and man it blew my 8 year old mind. I had never seen a 3-D game before and once I played it I was instantly hooked. It’s my favorite 3-D fighting game series of all time, bar none, and one of my top 3 fighting game series overall.
    The series is so pure, no gimmicky mechanics, fireballs, lasers, or super moves, just pure hand to hand authentic martial arts with tons of depth and sophistication. I thought it was extremely weird how Tekken fanboys immediately started trying to attack VF5 US when it came out and started trying to put the game down and bury it. It pissed me off because of how much I love the series, and to see these bunch of ignorant fanboys just try to downplay the game in that way really irritated me. I’ve always liked Tekken, not nearly as much as VF, but I’ve always liked it as well, but I have to be honest and say that the Tekken community has some of the most toxic fanboys in the genre. Easily. It’s like they don’t want any other 3-D fighter besides Tekken to thrive and be played. It’s childish.
    Anyway thank you for making this video man and for sticking up for an amazing game!

      @@shenelljohnson74 Well all I know is that I prefer VF to stay VF, meaning I want it to focus on pure authentic martial arts and realism. There’s PLENTY of games out there with lasers, fireballs, comeback mechanics, armored moves, 20 hit juggle combos, flashy colorful hit sparks, etc. I don’t want VF to give into that nonsense. At that point it wouldn’t even be VF anymore and MIGHT AS WELL be dead. I don’t want them selling out to that garbage.
      I don’t care about Tekken selling its soul, it jumped that shark a long time ago, but VF, “dead” or not, has always stayed true to its roots and remained unique and kept its integrity. The gameplay is deep, fluid, realistic, and sophisticated. Thats what the series is known for, I never want it to lose that. Ever. I personally couldn’t care less about “the masses” and what they want. The “masses” want easy, flashy, fighting games with a bunch of “waifus” and other nonsense. I’m tired of fans of other games wanting VF to be more like those other games, I mean just play those games instead of trying to ruin VF. VF occupies a special place in fighting games and is a breath of fresh air. So when we get VF6 I hope that it stays true to what VF is, even at the cost of sales to “the masses”. The only thing I want from a new VF are more characters, endings, rollback, and maybe bring the quest mode back from VF4 Evo. I don’t want the gameplay touched at all outside of move additions or something like that. I would hate if they added comeback mechanics and/or super moves.

    I wholeheartedly endorse this message. I think if more FGC players went through VF4 Evo's insane training mode, they'd get just how high skill a series this is. Like, maybe the most high skill. It wants you to do things as standard that I didn't think human hands were even capable of (like buffering multiple throws in a split second). As it is too many people think it's just PPK, or Akira if you want to show off.
    I believe it was actually in an older interview you did where someone (EXA Arcadia exec?) laid out how VF 5 and its insanely expensive cabs basically destroyed the Japanese arcade industry, so it's understandable why Sega put it into cryo-freeze for a decade. That's also apparently the reason Sega weren't willing to fund a full VF6 without testing the waters first. Which led to why we didn't get rollback, they said they would have had to rebuild VF5's frame code base to make it work (but at least we know they're very aware they need it). On the plus side, those expensive arcade setups had TVs in Japanese game centres streaming matches from around the country, which is the origin of those matches you see on the idle screen.

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  Před 9 měsíci +4

      Yeah but I don't think VF5 is to blame for the fall of Japanese arcades ha, I do remember him saying that in the interview many years ago. I think what happened is the classic tale of sega projecting grown in the arcades, and then the growth didn't happen, and then they were left eating a bunch of losses. Sort of like the launch of the PS3. Overall I think that Sega are starting to finally pull themselves back together a bit (mostly because of yakuza), and so bringing VF into the yakuza engine is a very smart idea. If fighting game players knew a little more about game development other than tweeting at Harada, they hopefully would have seen the merits of this plan ha. But the idea that Sega, who have been dormant with fighting games for like a decade, should just suddenly rush out Vf6 with a new staff who have no idea what they are doing would be a disaster. I think having them work on making this remaster was the right move. It'll pay off in the end when VF6 comes out, which I think it will.

TEKKEN was in a very situation in 2017 ironically when 7 dropped. VF has to revamp their whole universe if they want consumers to care about their next release if it ever comes. They have the core gameplay that can be addicting and fun. They just have to give a fuck about the rest of the package that comes with it. So many characters and I dont know anything about them. Compared to Tekken where they at least give you a story mode and arcade intros and outros along with lore.

    Great review and justice back for that remaster ! Yes vf6 obviously won't reach the same amount of players as tekken 8 but if the game is really wellrounded and provide rollback, solid and smooth matchmaking like sf6, and at last a story fucking mode to appeal casuals, it can be the most successful virtua fighter to date, i believe. Its core gameplay and spirit make vf a good alternative to Tekken.

    It's kind of funny, when I started getting into fighting games in the early 2000s, Virtua Fighter as a franchise was highly respected and regarded as the pro-3D fighter of choice (at least in my German internet circles). Even though, yeah, Tekken was always the big boy. Tekken 3 was huge, even non-fighting fans were playing it.
    I'm not sure what hurt the franchise the most then, maybe the Dreamcast port of 3 which honestly should have been a lot better..it got overshadowed by Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive 2 as a 3D fighter on a SEGA console and I think after the importance of VF2 for Saturn, this kind of put the series in an awkward position. VF4 on PS2 came at a time when the market was oversaturated and the genre on life support. I got VF5 with my PS3 back then and this and Dead or Alive 4 on 360 were my go-to 3D fighters for some time (though truth be told, I didn't play them as much as I played games from earlier gens).
    Ultimate Shodown to me felt more like a "let's preserve this game as a high quality SEGA legacy title" than "let's bring it back big time". But I think SEGA should bring the franchise back in some way after SF6 and Tekken 8 are out. I truly believe there is a space open for a second 3D fighting franchise, especially one that feels so radically different to Tekken and with Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive also currently out of the equation.

      Same with Super SFIV and even SFxTekken on PS3.

    Nice!
    I purchased VF5 a few weeks ago. Unfortunately have only played about two hours 😅
    I think 'Tekken Bros' are indeed very superficial. This due to how the series had always been at the cutting edge ... in pure polygon count ... to awesome cutscenes etc.
    I think the critiques of VF5 are as much about a frustration of this perceived 'lack' in VF5 as it means the series won't itself be taken seriously.
    Tekken fans know what irrelevance means (when fighting games were waning, when it struggled against SFIV, Tag 2s failure). Heck the initial emergence of 3D fighters made 2D fighters somewhat irrelevant in the first place... add onto the fact that Tekken has no 3D peers (DOA = dead, SoulCaliber = dead). It has been a sad state of affairs.
    So they take it very seriously ... even if it is in some sense superficial 😢🎉

    • @TheElectricUnderground
      @TheElectricUnderground  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Yes i agree, but I think the Tekken players are far too willing to sacrifice certain aspects of 3D fighter philosophy, at least in terms of what VF values, in order to be popular. There is no doubt that Tekken 7 is popular, but that also came with some costs as well in terms of the purity of the core combat and game design. I think VF can work to be more broadly appealing, but how it is going to do that should be different than the tekken method of adding slow motion, supers, 2d characters, and come back mechanics.

    • @orlanzo2621
      @orlanzo2621 Před 9 měsíci +1

      Actually VF has always been more cutting edge in terms of graphics compared to Tekken. VF always ran on more powerful hardware. The Model 1, 2, and 3, which ran VF1, 2, and 3 respectively, the Naomi 2, which ran VF4, and the Sega Lindburg which ran VF5 absolutely ran circles around the Namco System 11 and System 12 which ran Tekken 1-3, the Namco System 246, which ran Tekken 4 and Namco System 256 which ran Tekken 5.

    Virtua Fighter already had slow mo in (VF2 and VF3 you could have replays in slow motion after each round pressing by some buttons)
    Hit sparks and galaxy explosions doesn't fit the realism and the elegance of VF. It break VF's traditions.
    Vf use to have realistic effects like Wet clothes (when you rolled into puddles or rang out into water ) steam coming out your mouth in cold stages etc.. No BS lasers and cartoonish PS1 garbage effects . 😭

You think that a 3D fighting game looses its point by adding this things? Why so? Could you explaind yourself? I'm genuinelly intriged about the subject.
    Just to clarify, i'm not saying they should add super moves or meters to the next Virtua Fighter, i'm just curious why you think that those mechanics are inherently 2D fighting games and not 3D.

    I love VF but we have to admit the graphics are quite outdated. Also, when you hit the other character, the impact isn't there. Feels like it's telling me, not showing, a character being hit. But its not a dealbreaker, just an aspect I think can be improved without changing the essence of the game.

Hell, my first fighting game was Mace: The Dark Age. The mechanics are perfect and the series doesn't need to cater to casuals but it needs a fresh coat of paint and music that's as good or better than VF2.
