About the album 'Eternally Yours':
Alphaville, Germany’s biggest synth-pop export and creator of the legendary 80s anthems “Big in Japan”, “Sounds like a Melody” and “Forever Young”, has decided to go symphonic. The band is doing things on the grand scale and catapulting the band’s 40 years of greatest hits out of the orbit of synthesizers and rhythm machines into the world of the human sound machine, the symphony orchestra. “Eternally Yours” is more, much more, than a mere translation of the songs into the sound spectrum of a great orchestra. What it amounts to, rather, is a symbiosis of Marian Gold’s unique vocal capacities, the original Alphaville sound and the majestic power and rich timbres of the concert-hall-sized German Film Orchestra of Babelsberg.
“Eternally Yours” is about the everlasting theme of endurance and evanescence. The lyrics of songs from the past four decades were written predominantly by Gold himself. One central theme for Alphaville and Gold has always been the dream: “We really get around quite a lot, we’ve played almost everywhere, in our heads and out of our heads. All that goes into our music, into the idea of what Alphaville could be. It is like a never-ending dream. Those who hear our music hear fragments of this dream.” The title-track, specifically written for this event comes across like an amorous farewell letter. “I didn't write a single line of my own for this song. All the words and all the ideas come from Shakespeare's Sonnetts. All I did was recompile and minimally adjust them, so as to make them more singable for me.”
“All 23 musical pieces on this album have been essentially clarified by their arrangement, they’re stripped clean, released, set free. Their true nature has been revealed.” Gold and his two arrangers Max Knoth and Christian Lohr have given this album the sonic ambience that matches the musical content of its songs. The songs don’t sound overblown, either, they’re not pushed beyond their limits - on the contrary, the album has such natural, warm, even familiar tones that listening to it, you wonder why there haven’t been more symphonic arrangements of Alphaville songs in the past. Gold goes so far as to say: “When I hear it, ‘Eternally Yours’ really does sound as if it were actually the first Alphaville album - except that for forty years, it lay unreleased. We simply didn’t have access to an orchestra in those days.”

“The video for ‘Forever Young’ was shot somewhere in the outskirts of London inside an abandoned building that was once used as a lunatic asylum. It was planned the video would take place in the setting of a bunker with a couple of survivors from World War III. I remember me walking through the rotten corridors of the location during a shooting break. In one of the deserted wings, the floors were covered with paper-sheets containing medical reports of former patients. I couldn’t help but reading some of them and it was a weird sensation being confronted with these intimate tragedies while we were performing the end of the world next door. And then a thought hit me: Maybe I’m just imagining all this. What if the next document bears my name? What if I’m not a pop star? What if I’m just mad…?”

It is hard to tell, but I am 100% positive sure, this is my favorite song, ever. I have been saying this since the 80's.
He first sang this song mournfully at the age of 30 when he felt that his youth was gone. Now he sings it at 68 with what seems to be hope in his eyes and voice.

This is not just a song, it's an anthem. I've already asked my family to play this song at my funeral.
My father died 4 weeks ago. It was one of his favorite songs. The song was played at the end of the funeral when the urn was buried. Nobody could hold back the emotions that were released. Dad I love you forever and I hope that someday we will see together and be reunited again ❤️😥🙏🕯️

Красивая, легендарная, незабываемая, узнаваемая, на все времена песня FOREVER YOUNG от группы ALPHAVILLE. Всё тот же узнаваемый, неповторимый голос, спустя десятилетия. Когда я услышал песню forever young в новой версии 2022 года в сопровождении симфонического оркестра, у меня аж мурашки по всему телу побежали. Настолько я впечатлён голосом солиста этой группы Хартвигом Ширбаумом, что на меня накатила скупая, мужская слеза от восхищения.

Ah wie geil. Eine der Hymnen meiner Jugend. Ich habe ab 1985 eine Ausbildung zum Werkstoffprüfer gemacht. Berufsschule war in Hagen. Da habe ich mir seinerzeit die LP gekauft. Riesen Plattenladen, Name leider vergessen. Auf einem hart ersparten Thorens TD320 abgespielt mit Quadral Boxen. Habe beides noch. Funktioniert Dank guter Pflege alles noch einwandfrei. Beste Zeit ever. Musikalisch, aber auch in meinem Leben.

I was first played Alphaville’s music by an ex boyfriend and his favourite song was Forever Young. Sadly he died in his 20’s, in a senseless, tragic accident and so in my mind, he will always be Forever Young.

WOW, I had forgotten all about this song! Yeah, it takes me right back to the 80s. But for me, those memories can be very bittersweet. The 80s were a decade of loss - losing so many wonderful friends to AIDS. Wishing to be forever young is excrutatingly poignant. Luckily I came across a song from the new ABBA Voyage - I Still Have Faith in You. I listen to it when I'm depressed and sad and thinking I've wasted my life.

It's saddening how relevant that first verse remains. I was born 12 years after this song originally released and once again the question pops up: are you gonna drop the bomb or not?
Only difference is there are no leaders worthy of anyone's praise, no matter at what side of the aisle or in what hemisphere you're looking. Ah well. Expecting the worst, but hoping for the best. Best to just live and not think about what's out of one's hands.

Thank you Alphaville for doing these versions. The originals are still fantastic. However, I feel the passage of time adds a certain beautiful poignant edge to Marian's vocals and adds, for me, extra layers; even a more philosophical depth to the song. Questions asked by the younger, naïve student being answered by the older, wiser teacher. Questions we have asked ourselves, and still do. The answers are all there in the song. If we're lucky, we'll get old. Many people do not get that privilege. Cherish youth, not your own, but the young people who are here now, and the generations to come. Let us leave them something worth being nostalgic about too. Alphaville have created a legacy that we know transcends generations. Let us all be like Alphaville. Love to all!
