I was struggling to figure out how that was a checkmate until I realized the pawn king is in fact just a pawn, not a king, and thus can't take the rook.
That confused me for a moment too, until I thought back to the description. It's a true pawn, like in normal rules, so yeah it had literally nowhere it could move. That makes the "King" exceptionally weak in this variant.
@@person8064 I'm still wondering with such a weak "king", why are the rooks start the game staring at the kings instead of each other like normal chess? At least make it harder to suddenly nuke the king this way.
@@themobius5798 probably because the logic of whoever created this variant was - queen too op, 2 rooks too op, lets just nerf the queen to a rook, and the rooks to bishops.
Quite funny that the biggest bozo of the village is the king. In normal chess at least it's capable of taking attackers or evading checks but here it's literally standing like a statue and cant even protect itself.
The way I think of it, it’s not a king. This game isn’t about two powerful armies fighting each other, it’s about villagers trying to institute their own king. We even see that in how their tactics are far more simple (attacking forward) but bc of that they don’t defend each other, bc they’re not an organized army in the same way the normal chess pieces are. And that’s why we don’t have a queen. If your villagers and pieces can escort their claimaint to the other side of the board, then you can promote them to king and they can claim their rightful place
clarification for how the new pieces work the sargent doesn't move like a king, but rather is a pawn variant that can move/capture both forward/diagonally (some call it an omnipawn because of this) the soldier, as simp said, moves and captures only forward both the sargent and soldier can promote like a regular pawn
@@pythagmathcat not quite because a combination of pawn and soldier wouldn't be able to move diagonally w/o captures while the sargent can move forward or diagonally regardless of whether it can capture or not

For those confused on how its a checkmate, thats a normal pawn, not another Soldier, so his king equivalent can only take diagonally

I was wondering why they didn't just use a king piece instead since it's been used in other variants before even as not a check-able piece
So can sargents and soldiers promote to kings as well?
