Notice the detail on how Korra takes down the thugs. She utilizes the philosophy of each of the elements she uses. When fighting the water guy, she taunts him to make the first move and immediately turns her defense into offense. When fighting the earth guy, she waits and listens for him to make a move and strikes at the appropriate moment. When fighting the fire guy, she drills into him with everything she got and breaks his balance.

Tenzin might be my favorite character on this show, JK Simmons does such a great job voicing him. And I just love how he wants to be a calm spiritual guide like his father, but he clearly inherited his mother's temperament.

The issue with Korra is her crew, Bolin feels like a subpar version of Sokka, Mako is boring in a way Katara or Zuko who he shares similarities with never were and while Asami has the best story of the three, she lacks people to bounce off of beside Korra. They sometimes have cool interactions but they're too few. I love Korra herself but the other three are flawed. The adult characters though, they're almost universally great and Tenzin in particular is the best of them all.

@@Arkayjiya i love both korra and atla and i often disagree with a lot of the qualms that tlok dislikers have but i gotta say i agree with the unanimous decision that the The Krew is overall worse than The Gaang. Not necessarily in terms of bending ability but the dynamic and chemistry between characters just isn't there the way it was for the gaang (and part of that could probably be bc they wasted so much time on pointless romance plots). It's sad. And as for asami, i absolutely adore her, but i just wish she was consistently more involved with the story. She barely had any role in season 2 and starting showing up a little more in season 3, but she was mostly major for only 1 and 4.

Keep in mind that the Fire Nation was already well into the industrial revolution in the original show. That would have put them well into the 19th century in our time. Then add Aang's remaining living years plus Korra being in her late teens adds almost another twenty years. It makes perfect sense that it would be around the 1920s in our time now.

Aang and Katara's 3 kids' names all have a meaning:
Bumi, the eldest, is named after King Bumi of Omashu, one of the few friends Aang had who was still alive after 100 years.
Kya, the middle daughter, is named after Katara and Sokka's mother and we all know how much she meant to her.
Tenzin, the youngest, is not as obvious, but it is once you know that the name of the current Dalai Lama, leader of the Tibetan Buddhists, the culture that inspired the Air Nomads, is Tenzin Gyatso. Which is also the origin of Monk Gyatso, Aang's caretaker and closest friend among the airbenders.

Even in ATLA, the Fire Nation was very industrialized because of their bending and inventions (the tanks, the drill, war balloons, etc.). This rapid industrialization in the world is probably because with the end of the war and unification of the nations, everyone could participate and share in the benefits of each nation's bending.

  • @Flamefox20

So a couple of things. LoK takes place 70 years after AtlA. As for the technology, remember that the Fire Nation where actually the first to create a giant zeppelin like what the police force used. They even had the tanks that they used and the Earth Kingdom had those tank like vehicles during the invasion. So they were already making some tech leaps back in AtlA.
Just something to kind of keep in mind, Nickelodeon had a lot of issues at the start of production for this. They didn't really know if they were going to be able to continue after season 1 or not.
Lastly, this is Legend of Korra and NOT Avatar the Last Airbender. I feel that a lot of people hated LoK because they heard squeal and went into thinking that it was going to be exactly like AtlA. It's different, but that doesn't make it bad. It follows not only a whole different person but also a whole different Avatar journey. Aang came into a world at war, Korra came into a world at peace. Or at least general peace. The themes in LoK are a little more adult than AtlA as well. I'm really hoping you two stick with it. Found you guys through your AtlA watch through and hoping to join you on your journey through LoK!

In regards to your comment about how small the Fire Nation is in comparison to how much land they took over, the Fire Nation is highly based off Imperial Japan, who took over almost all of East Asia and pretty much the entire South Pacific, despite geographically not being that large a country. Japan was able to successfully invade the much larger China due to its more advanced military, just like how the Fire Nation occupied the much larger Earth Kingdom (which is very much based off of Chinese culture).

I agree and disagree. I do think that the bar for ATLA was really high so comparing Korra to it isn't exactly all that fair. But I do find that some of the themes explored in Korra are mature, like you said, but the followup discussion afterwards kind of just, doesn't exist. For example, the equalists after finding their ring leader was a bender suddenly stopped being a thing. Zaheer's idea of anarchy seemed like a watered down version of what anarchists think. That being said, I put most of the blame on Nickelodeon. Had they just been upfront about how many seasons, and how many episodes, and didn't treat the series like trash, I think Korra had the potential to be up there with ATLA. Although it might've still been hard without Aaron Eashz

I understand your points about industry, I prefer fantasy over steampunk, and this show is definitely steampunk.
Something to keep in mind, which other people may have already mentioned, LoK does not have a single storyline throughout, it has distinct seasons that each have their own story. This was because initially there was supposed to be only one season, but then they got renewed for another season. Then another two, and the show was moved from TV to online only halfway through the final season. So this has caused some disjointed storytelling, the seasons aren't as connected as they could have been, and this means you have a completely rounded out story each season.
Halfway through the final season not only was LoK moved online, but their funding got cut by an episode. The writers wanted the finale to be good, so they ended up having to choose between not paying the animators for one episode at all, or have one lower quality episode. They went with the latter option. When you get there you'll understand which episode that is. It sucks, that they had to make that choice.
All that said, I still like LoK a lot, it has a lot of interesting things to say, and Korra is the kind of protagonist who has a lot of character growth to do. Some people dislike that, but I enjoy it.

I would say about 70 years, from about 1858 to 1928, ish. Remember, the fire nation already had metal war ships in Avatars, and airships had just been invented.
Avatar pets NEVER survive the Avatar. Remember when the previous Fire avatar died? His pet dragon surrounded him to try to protect him at the last second, giving up his life to die with his master when he could have fled.

A lot of people say this isn't as good as Avatar - I disagree, it's not the same but I found it every bit as good. I do like the later seasons more than the earlier ones but part of that is because on both the first and second season the writers didn't know if they were going to get canceled or not so that cramped their writing style. Still, there is a lot that is different from Avatar, but that's not a bad thing. Each is very good in their own way. I hope you find this series as good as I did, but to each their own. Either way, I hope you find it good enough to watch it all and I look forward to seeing your reactions to it.

@@CrazeeAdam I agree totally. Now, personally I think if the writers had been assured that they were going to have several seasons then season 1 would have been better because I think they had to condense the story a bit to make sure they got it all told - I wish the first 2 seasons had been done over 3 season or even 4, but 3 would have been enough to improve it all. That said, I felt they did a great job nonetheless. My general feeling is that the whole thing is really good, but season 2 was better than season 1 - though season 1 was top notch as far as villain writing goes, and season 3 was better than 2 and season 4 was at least as good, maybe a bit better, but an excellent conclusion.
There are things I would have done different in each season, but nothing that disappointed me.

Same here. ATLA debuted when I was 12 and it was one of my all-time favorite shows growing up. My cousin and I recorded the finale when it premiered so that once we finished it we immediately watched it again. It is a very emotional show for me.
When I first heard of TLoK I was not interested. I never actually checked it out until like a year or two after the series ended and was predisposed to dislike it. Imagine my surprise when I fell in love with it.
This show is very different and has some weak moments but I stand by the statement that this show is every bit as good as ATLA.

Plus Book 2 gave us Varrick and Nuktuk. That alone makes me fond of it.

Call me crazy, but I vastly preferred Unalaq (at least early Unalaq) as a villain to Vaatu. And I thought the question of who's really in the right during the whole North-South conflict was really interesting, and unfortunately got completely abandoned mid-season.

And finally Tenzin named after Monk Gyatso because Monk Gyatso was named after an actual Buddhist monk (I believe) named Tenzin Gyatso. Korra has its ups and downs but I think it’s a genuinely enjoyable show overall as long as you don’t expect it to be exactly the same as ATLA. I get that a lot of people dislike the technological advances and find the changes shocking, but it makes sense from a world building perspective when you consider that 70 years have passed and the Fire Nation was already undergoing an industrial revolution during the war. Korra also came out 5 years after ATLA’s finale, which gave fans plenty of time to not only start craving new content but also detach themselves a bit from the previous setting. This why I always encourage people to wait a while before starting this series after finishing ATLA.

You are forgetting that in the first show, the Fire Nation already had coal-powered steel battleships, rigid airships like Zeppelins, and tanks. And Earth Benders already had tanks as well as public transportation. And sokka's Invasion Fleet had submarines. Avatar The Last Airbender is firmly in the steampunk genre when it comes to technology, but team Avatar spends most of its time in rural pastoral areas where that level of development hasn't arrived yet, the only exceptions being Ba Sing Se, the Northern Air Temple, and briefly during The Invasion, the Fire Nation. The fact that Legend of Korra is only at late 1920s, early 1930s level technology means that they progressed much much slower than our own history, because avatar The Last Airbender had technology equivalent to early World War 1, and Legend of Korra is 70 years later, so if they were being really realistic, they could have 1980s level technology

If you really think about it, the industrial revelation started in the last air bender. The fire nation army was using coal and steam powered military grade ships. The blimps, the zeppelins, the tanks, the train-tank hybrid Azula was using to chase the avatar. The fire nation was so over powering with innovation which is true to real life colonialism as well.
The same inventor also created the first submarines for the water tribe in the invasion into the fire nation. They also used those armored caterpillar like things for the earth benders during the invasion. So it makes sense how industrial legend of Korra is because the proto-industrial revolution started while Aang was in a block of ice.

when you actually think about it, the jump in technology of the world makes sense in aspects of this world, not just being true to our world. the setting of this series is basically steam punk and considering steam punk was used a lot in the fire nation, ig makes sense that when Zuko redeems the fire nation he would share that technology with the world. and since the war is over and a lot of the technology isn't used for war ships, war tanks (which makes the invention of cars a lot more believable imo), and all that; they can use it on other aspects in the world. and, another thing, there's electricity now. which for most of the previous years in the ATLA world lightning generation was kept a secret (from what i can remember on the spot, i could be wrong) and kept in the royal family. so a lot of firebenders working in factories to produce electricity makes total sense, in the aspect that Zuko would make it well know that lighting generation exists and can be achieved.
but i can agree that this huge change can be jarring for most people, since your expectations with other fantasy stories don't change the aesthetic that much, and Korra kinda pulls the rug from underneath your feet. i, personally didn't have that much of a big deal with it. the big thing i care about in a story is the characters, and Korra questioning the role of her job in an ever changing world, made me appreciate the change even more. if the next Earth Avatar series is a cyberpunk, i would not care so long as it has... bending and great martial arts, a powerful score, crazy visuals and animation, awesome story, and important of all... compelling characters that are dealing with the problems in this new setting of the world.

You can really tell the difference (imho) and not in a good way lol. Studio Pierrot doesn't seem to do well with intricate details and body movements, especially when characters speak. This show doesn't deserve the grief that it gets.
The major problem with this show is that the creators thought each session was going to be the last. That was the fault of the executives, not the show creators. Because of that, each season is self-contained, and there is no overarching plot that weaves through the entire series like we got with the previous series.
Other than that, this series actually exceeds the previous one in a lot of ways. Both the text and subtext are more complex and mature. The character development is better in my opinion. The action sequences are amazing. And the third season introduces one of the greatest villains in any TV show ever, voiced by a famous punk rock singer (brilliant casting choice).
