For what it's worth. Yes, Korra made some horrible decisions here, but I don't think she actually went on a date with Bolin to make Mako jealous, or to get back at him. It definitely seems like she was feeling down on herself, and Bolin made her feel special for a second, so she wanted to keep that going. It is slimy behaviour though, because it's clear that Bolin is into her, and she doesn't feel the same way.

Bolin is the sweetest boy. He deserves all the love and affection. He just rarely gets it from anyone besides Mako.. Idk I think he'd be pretty healthy for Korra. But obviously it's complicated. As many teen romances are
I know that a lot of people aren't huge fans of the love square that happens in LOK, but I think it's really realistic for a group of beautiful young adults/teens going through their first loves/relationships. And I love how the show still showcases how strong the brother dynamic is between Mako and Bolin and how much they really defend, protect, and care about one another. The sibling dynamics in ATLA and LOK are so good!
That's the thing. Korra is very new to it all. And while it's clear Mako has some experience prior most likely, he's been hurt in the past by life making him emotionally unstable too. Bolin on the other hand is pretty innocent and most direct. He's probably about as expirenced in dating as Korra though. Makes for some very hard and messy situations.
It just felt far off from the original Avatar. Yeah, the original one had relationships, but it wasn’t nearly as focused on as you see in Korra, especially so early on in the show
@@alexanderrose1071 That’s the problem, too many people want this to be like the first show, but it’s in a new age with new people of a different age group from very different lives.

For some reason it was this episode that really got me onboard with LoK, probably because I've been in Bolin's shoes (especially at that time). It always breaks my heart when the camera pans over to him after Korra and Mako kiss! I'm glad that they do eventually move away from the love triangle stuff, but it's fun in short bursts
Asami always gets flak from reactors. It's a shame because she's so sweet and genuine.

I think it's cause the first season feels so rushed so she's really pushed into the story and everything advances quickly, so people are generally skeptical of her.

She is also one of the baddest fighters in the show because she never takes a hit when fighting.
I love how later seasons handle the triangle relationship in a very mature way

To be fair Korra has been secluded nearly all her life. Shes 17 years old here so limited social interaction with little knowledge of romance... I can't blame her but still that was painful to watch

He's arguably the most mature and well meaning out of all three of them too. Well Asami too. But out of the three here it's Bolin too. Always is the best meaning ones with the best intentions that get hurt the most
whenever I see this episode I'm reminded of that cosplaying couple who were obsessed with Korra and Tahno, the girl would dress up as Korra the guy would dress up as Tahno, it was the weirdest ship ever. Anyone else remember this? they used to do livestreams and everything.
Toss asami into the mix get a full polycule going, nothing like a good luck orgy before the finals.

Season 1 Bolin is the BEST character if you ask me. He's the most sincere and honest, and is the only team member who doesn't hurt someone else. He's impressionable and can be manipulated, unfortunately. But his heart is pure.
I’m convinced the main gripe people have with this show is that it isn’t ATLA, which imo is a good thing. The world has changed, the characters are way different with way more emotional and mental struggles, relating to the real world with rapid technological advancement and our inability to keep up emotionally and relationship wise. If people bothered to consider the context, the things they hate actually make sense and are real things that happen with people.

This was the episode where I genuinely sighed and said dang, I really miss ATLA. The love triangle stuff feels really forced, like the writers were really trying to spin some needless drama to interest teens at the time. Wanted an avatar gang adventure traveling the world and mastering the elements, and we got this. 🙄
I felt the same at the time but I don't hate it now. I enjoy how messy it is and they're young and stupid and aren't on the run from an invading country, so they have the luxury of having love spats. And this episode has some of my favorite Bolin scenes.
@@Renoistic It might be cute to look back on, but just taking it in comparatively to the series as a whole, it's still the weakest portion that just drags on too long and distracts from the central plot with repetitive writing.

@@hellogoodbyeandallinbetween Negatory, and to be honest, you might be the first time I've ever heard anyone dislike Aang and Katara's relationship. Remember, it's not just about the content or intent - it's the execution.
The idea that Korra has romantic interests in a show about teenagers is fine. That can be done well. It just wasn't executed well by delving into a cliche and uncommitted love triangle (if you include Bolin, a love square briefly) over 2 seasons long that dragged on longer than it needed to.
Aang and Katara developing was a perfect cute reflection on Aang's innocence as a young boy - it contrasted him NOT wanting to be the Avatar and instead just wanting to have a fun childhood, a direct conflict to his main arc becoming the Avatar. They sprinkled brief moments of it slowly through the 3 books. Even when they had romantic drama (like with Jet or Zuko in the mix), it was always brief and reflected Aang's insecurity. Not Katara's.
In Korra, it would've been less repetitive if it focused on Korra's love journey. Instead, it was a complete entanglement going back and forth between Korra's own journey, Mako's journey, etc. It rarely had anything to do with her main character arc as well - it was drama for the sake of drama.
Honestly if they had picked one character for Korra to be with, they could've developed it smoothly over 4 books instead of having an aimless winding drama fest.
@@thewrongvine I don't disagree that romance could have been handled better in Korra, but it's also unlikely that a person only dates one individual in their lifetime. Bolin and Sokka's experiences with romance are more realistic.
I've never seen Katara and Aang as a good match during atla, and no I am not a Katara and Zuko shipper. It makes me uncomfortable that Aang is 12 and thinks about romance so much, and that there is all this discourse about who Katara should have ended up with. She's 14, and doesn't have to be forced into a choice like that.
Later in life, sure! Katara and Aang coming back together after learning about themselves post war and having time to enjoy life, sure! But the way they develop it makes Katara seem like a reward for Aang's success, like romance is the ultimate goal. We had enough romantic relationships in the show that worked well, the main character doesn't always need one too.
Also, Aang didn't get jealous of Jet, which was very strange, as Katara was clearly enamoured by him, and Aang had already shown that he liked her. On top of this, I would prefer that the whole new family that Aang thinks of and can't let go of during his Chakra sessions with the guru weren't just focused on Katara, what about Sokka and Toph? Romantic relationships are not the only family kind.

I think I know why this series doesn't hold up to the original. It's still good, but Aangs story was a journey. Almost every episode was a different location. This is the same city over and over.
I think it holds up rather well. I just believe that most people don’t understand why and how people behave the way they do, because they don’t care to consider the context of their lives, mental illness and how confusing and awkward it is being this age.

@@hellogoodbyeandallinbetween idk, it was more contained in that, I really didn't like the Jet episodes, and I get what you're saying, but in ATLA it just was different, but in TLOK it feels so Highschool, I was like in the original it felt like aang and katara were going to be together, and what we were watching was their growth into it, in TLOK they rush the romances to clear the way for Asami and Kora, and that also feels like them just trying to be different for the sake of being different, don't get me wrong I like them, but it just feels all rushed and unearned, in my opinion, but it has been a long time since I watched the whole series, maybe I am wrong.

The love triangle stuff is imo slightly toned down and eventually ended in season 2 and season 3 and 4 are far better off not only because of that but in general too, especially season 3, honestly its peak of all of avatar right now.

I'm not really a shipper: most relationship attempts in media, especially with young people, tend not to be written very well or are just mediocre, just pushing two attractive people together. My least favorite part of this show, but they tone it back later which helps
As a not-so-attractive young person (and writer) who's had some good relationships and some quite bad relationships, I really can't grasp the obsession for a lot of writers with pairing two generically attractive people together and strangleholding all other possible avenues and chemistry in order to justify pairing them together. This episode had the chance to subvert the whole "girl uses a rebound to get back at the guy she really has feelings for" trope and have Korra sincerely like Bo Lin for their compatible personalities for a little bit (and maybe not even in a solely romantic way; this crass, goofy friendship she has with Bo Lin doesn't really get any more attention for the entire rest of the series.) But instead they just took the path of most resistance to direct her back towards Mako, which is frustrating to say the least. It doesn't matter how attractive two people are; if they have nothing in common, they're not going to vibe.

Ah, you've watched what's generally considered the worst episode/chapter of Book 1. Unlike a lot of fans, though, you girls don't seem to hate the romance angles so far.
This was also the point where some fans were starting to tire of the pro-bending story for some reason. Like me, though, you girls seemed to still be enjoying it.

Thank goodness they devote most of this season to teenage love triangle drama bs instead of actually fleshing out the themes they introduced with the equalists. I think that's my main gripe with this series, they set up all these interesting ideas, but then waste so much run time on the dumbest, most trite "drama for drama's sake" nonsense. I can't understand why they decided to go that route.

I don't really like this episode, it's too awkward. I'm okay with a little goof-off filler before the heavy drama, but it's just about stupid teenagers acting like stupid teenagers (not Bolin, he was perfect), and not in a funny way. I like Korra and Bolin spending time together though, but she definitely didn't think it was a real date.
It's called character building. For better or worse.
