Iron Lung mod showcase: Seeing outside mod
Vložit
- čas přidán 15. 05. 2022
- This is a quick mod showcase showing off a mod for the game Iron Lung, which is a game revolving around the idea of not being able to see.
You operate a submarine blindly, as the front window is sealed off.
With this mod, the front window is instead opened, allowing you to see outside and view your surroundings.
The mod adds a real time render of the world outside through the window, with proper depth perception based on where the player is standing in relation to the window, the lighting outside, and other stuff like that which I forgot I added
The mod also features some enhancements to make the game easier for exploration, such as a marker on the game's map, showing where you are located, to help with navigation.
The mod also features a toggle to change how the view outside of the submarine looks, if it has all of the vanilla filters applied to it which the submarines camera has. With it on, the game looks a lot more authentic, however it is a bit difficult to see, so toggling the filters off lets you see a clear image of the world around you.
The real purpose of this mod is more for exploration of the game's map on a second play-through, rather than something you should install and use on your first time playing.
Since the game revolves around the idea of not being able to see your surroundings, giving the ability to see takes a lot away from the games premise and can make it a lot less scary. And of course, it's rather cheat-y as you are much better equipped to complete the mission.
But of course, it's up to your discretion how you use the mod! :)
Use it how you feel fit.
The download link to the mod is:
cdn.discordapp.com/attachment...
You install the mod by placing this file into the folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Iron Lung\Iron Lung_Data\Managed
Make sure to replace the original Assembly-CSharp.dll that is in there. (Make a backup beforehand if you wish).
To uninstall the mod, you can make use of Steam's "Verify Game Integrity" button in the games properties in your steam library, or you can make use of a backed up copy of the dll file.
A reddit post has also been made for this mod with more detailed instructions below:
/ mod_that_lets_you_see_...
Hope you enjoy the mod! :)
Feel free to contact me on Discord if you have any trouble using or installing the mod, my @ is:

I originally thought that when the window closes, the outside stops existing, and the photos are just 3d renders of what is "happening outside", it's incredible how the dev went all out in creating an entire 3d landscape just for us to only see it in pictures
Yeah it's awesome, makes it way more creepy when there's an actual world out there to explore
What did you expect them to do, have preset images for the camera? People would notice almost immediately, it wouldn't be very believable. If anything, modeling the entire environment was the quickest and smartest way to handle the camera.
just to show that doing the whole "youre in a submarine and you cant see the outside" is not out of laziness
They did make an entire landscape, but the sub is not in it. It’s way out in the void of the workplace ( map ) and the buttons control a tiny camera inside of the model ocean they made. So when you get a photo, it’s what the camera sees. Not what’s right outside the sub. Though it feels that way obviously by game design.

Man Iron Lung is such an amazing game. Hands down one of the best horror games ever; perfectly utilizing the medium’s ability to really put you in it’s world.
Only nitpick I have is the creature design; which just looks like a scary fish. Because of the premise of the story (the wholw “blood ocean” stuff and all), I expected something more uncanny & unexplainable. Like maybe a creature that looks like it’s smiling, or has human-like teeth, or something like that.
While the game is... fine... I wouldn't say it's it's BEST horror game ever. The game gets repetitive, there's not a lot of replayability, there aren't that many scary events (and the ones that are there are highly scripted), and the ending is kinda abrupt and unsatisfying.
If a sequel answered some of these problems and expanded more on the "blood Ocean exploration" aspect I see a lot of potential
I'm pretty new to the horror game segment, so from all the games I've played, Iron Lung is probably the best scary game as far as I'm concerned lol
Just knowing that the threat you see in the camera is actually centimeters from you, with only this metal wall of a sub seperating you from it, you are entirely vunerable to it, cannot see it, and the photo was taken seconds ago, so it could be anywhere now. That gets me big time lol
There's definitively not much replayability, but that's kinda why I made the mod, for a second playthrough for exploring what else there is to see, once you've been adequately spooked
it actually adds for me, in the end, you weren’t important enough for the monsters to kill.
I feel like the devs tried to make it more like a fish to make you feel like your in a ocean of some sort.
For me, the whole monster looking like an angler fish works perfectly. If it were something outlandish, or like you said, looks like it's smiling or had human-like teeth, that would pull me out of the experience, as that would make me feel like that planet was made for the player in some out-of-universe way. The monster looking like a large Earth angler fish gives me the feeling the universe doesn't care. That you're insignificant on yet another planet.
The main problem with this mod, is that you have to look down to push the buttons and you can't really SEE the window while the sub is moving other than a little bit after you let off the button and hurry up and look up. A mod to let you use the arrow keys to move the sub would have worked wonders here.
That's an excellent point, I'll probably implement something like this if I make a mod update
In a way that could actually add to the scare factor, looking down to move, something moves in front of the window, and you look up to see it and boom it’s gone. It’d get so many ppl riled up I imagine
@@RUNDEN_ maybe using the arrow keys as submarine controls instead???
The problem is, one of the main points of atmosphere in the game is that you’re not controlling the submarine, you’re controlling a _person_ controlling it. It feels different because it envelops you more into the experience of actually having to manually move the ship.
NO, THE ARROWS TO MOVE THE SUB WILL RUIN THE GAME
The lore fascinates me. Especially the anomaly and the Quiet Rapture. I hope to see it be fleshed out more in the near future.
I'd love to see it fleshed out through other games, but I hope it doesn't go too overboard. I want to feel like there are mysteries that we shouldn't solve, mysteries that let the imagination run wild!
Even without the FOV restrictions and the fuzzy photo filter, this game and the environment makes you feel so uneasy. All from a paragraph or two of preamble. Bravo to the developer. Are you listening, AAA industry? Take notes!
I think the problem with the AAA "industry" is that they hire story writers not game devs, which leads to what is essentially a minimally interactive movie, following someone else with an on-rails pacing, rather than a fully interactive experience that makes the player feel like they *are* the protagonist.

This mod actually only changes the window being open, besides that the ocean is actually already physically there in this form but it just cannot be seen by the player
I love how developer deadass designed an entire ocean just to only show it through 144p low quality camera
@@he3004 i mean the map is really low quality, and doing it any other way would be ridiculously hard
Its somewhat ingenious how effective the simple camera filter is at making the enviornment feel so believable
That's the best bit. The devs didn't cop out on this!
Ugh no. Watch some out of bounds videos. As a, former creator of games myself I can say that making either submarine moving or environment around it it's literally worst imaginable idea for indie game.
Basically you move the camera not the iron lung itself.
Even if you remove window without camera manipulation and etc(like this mod did) you'll just see green "fog" Of the "water"
In IRON LUNG 2 ... you will need to exit the sub in Bioshock suit frequently to open up big steel gate locks to proceed with the sub further.
Man, having to exit the sub
that's a terrifying thought
@@RUNDEN_ what the most terrifying is the "ocean" that you're in is mostly blood. Imagine how it would be if we exit the rusty sub

Great video! Though I would have appreciated the text being on for much longer because reading it is confusing when they suddenly switch places with other text so quickly
Oh yeah that's definitively not ideal, sorry about that.
I recorded this with my voice originally, but I'm far too self conscious and socially awkward to be able to live with myself leaving my voice in, so I muted that audio track and replaced everything I was saying with text instead. I didn't think of the timing so much, it was just showing when I was saying it, which probably doesn't translate well to reading rather than listening, sorry about that
Thanks for the kind words though!
Then pause.
@@desertsane What a wonderous Idea! How have I not thought of it before!?
@@desertsane It shouldn't be expected of viewers to have to pause the content to watch it, this is simply fault of the video creator doing a poor job, rather than a fault of the viewer, please don't take it out on them for complaining, as they have every right to complain. It's me who messed up lol
This is beyond awesome. It actually makes things a bit creepier (though maybe not as suspenseful). Has David seen this yet?
David hasn't seen this no, not to my knowledge anyway, but I believe there's a far more popular video of someone doing a live modification to achieve the same thing, which they're far more likely to see
@@RUNDEN_ got a link for that?
@@eduardolindner9333 i mean you literally just look up “iron lung” and it’s like the 4th one down. It’s even before this video. But here; czcams.com/video/QhGOrIjgD7E/video.html
@@RUNDEN_ here’s a link to the more popular video czcams.com/video/iUr3ZB3kLbI/video.html
That is very impressive! It’s interesting how there is an actual landscape out there
This is some much more interesting programming then I think most people realize. The submarine actually never moves throughout the entire game, and it doesn't need to given that through the lens of the camera you can only see still images, keeping the illusion of movement airtight. I assume you used something like a render texture taken from a camera that moves in the faraway environment corresponding to the quote on quote "coordinates" of the submarine?
I thought there was a camera thats moving in the map and the photos we see come from that?
It's actually something that even much more high-budget games do. Because simulating physics reliably in a moving body is quite difficult, and if it doesn't have any effect on the gameplay, might as well do a workaround. Right of the top of my head, Warframe does this with the Railjack spaceships. There is an actual spaceship floating through space, but the interior of the ship is separate static instance with "screens" for windows.
Players: "What's the LORE!?"
Dev: "Bruh. Idfk. It's just a game I whip out for 3 to 5 months on Unity..."
The stars are dying, the humans on the spaceship are the only ones left, sailing the ever more dimming cosmos. They found an alien moon covered in a sea of blood and they send a convict to check it out and they can't be bothered to provide a good submarine for him due to "lack of resources."
this is what happened when the window can withstand the water pressure
"Pizza sauce melon burger analyzer machine thing"
Incredible
Only the best naming here
when does it say that?
@@billcipher7292 look at the top left
It's pretty interesting considering that the game originally doesn't have anything around you actually there and the whole time you're just piloting a camera and taking the pictures, having the triggers activated by this camera to make them affect the ship back out of bounds
Yeah it's really interesting to see how the game was made and how it's all like
separated like this
This makes me wonder if the the outside of the iron lung sub is actually modeled or not.
Unfortunately it's not, the interior is the only model
If you check out some of the far better videos on this game where they use the unity editor and take the camera outside the sub, you can see there's nothing there
The actual map is invisible to players but if u enable it you see it
@@RUNDEN_ that’s not entirely true, the actual map is modeled but you have to use mods I think and make visible to see it, but it’s far out from the sub.
Oh I thought you meant the hull of the submarine itself
..
Wait so
Huh??
Of course the outside exists
..thats what you're looking at in the whole video
@@RUNDEN_ no I mean you know on the pictures? Which the walls and stuff? The map for that is modeled and is the same as the map you use for your current location with coordinates. It’s just invisible if you use mods to fly out the sub, and it’s far away from the sub.
Iron Lung if the submarine was actually good
psshhh the iron lung is the best submarine, who needs to be able to see
Since the last fish is just a flat image and you can push through it, and you showed that it doesn’t appear if you’re pointed to the west, does that mean you can take the last picture without triggering the jump scare?
Unfortunatly no, the game will always give you a jumpscare before the final picture, even if you play it backwards
If you mean the jump scare of the eye appearing on the screen and making the blood rise, then yeah! You can completely avoid that, you'll just have the right side sensor beeping like crazy permanently, and won't be able to take photos facing the right lol
The ending hull intrusion will still happen before you take the last photo tho
This is awesome! It will be even better with a blood red filter because its grey on the photos but its supposed to be a blood ocean at first!
What's to say it isn't a greyscale camera?

I need to make that part of the mod lol
I like how they can achieve literal space travel but still can’t travel the depths of the ocean
Same in real life lmao
Well, spaceships are not designed to handle many atmospheres of pressure. It's mostly for an atmosphere between 0 and 1.

This is interesting because I saw a video running through how this game works and technically the sub is located in a void outside the map, not physically in the world as you move around, so seeing it work like this is so cool
very cool video! so much more in depth (ha ha underwater joke) than i expected

Seems the remaining space fleet don't want to give convicts fancy SM-8 subs ;-;
Wow,it's awsome! Thanks for your effort! I love little games like this. It seems pretty simple and easy. But in-game.. Its not.
Also, this actually makes the game more creepy, like something can jump to your camera at any point.
Like,knowing you're on a blood ocean.
The requirements for the game are low. Game looks pretty old. But the feeling it gives is actually something i didn't really get from any other horror game.
Thanks for the mod again!
Heh yeah it can become more scary, but in different ways
I think not being able to see what's lurking only centimetres away from you through these thin metal walls, being trapped in this tiny capsule not able to know what horrors are around you is its own kind of fear
Being able to see makes it more of that traditional type of fear , like fear of the dark / fear of the unknown
But yeah it is certainly still scary!
Glad you enjoy the mod :)
Imagine that creature chasing you while you can clearly see him getting closer and closer.
This is sick, great for a second playthrough
This feels more like an Update to the game than a Mod which is pretty good
I had no idea there was a structure at the end that could be seen, I just got the spook. Excellent mod!
Interesting how putting the screen to the side could actually be a deliberate choice to disorient the player. With no other visual reference point some might start to treat the screen as a window, at least i did. Now that i saw how the view outside the front window and the image on the screen is the same, it makes sense to put the camera on the sub's nose and not its side. But i never thought of that...
Yeah that's an interesting thought, I was thinking it was to make it more scary - you could press the button to see what's in front of the sub, while having to look away from the front of the sub
You then see a threat in the photo, and then turn back to the front, where what's on the screen is just inches away through the metal
The exterior view should've been given a red tint. It's an ocean made of blood....
That's a very good point! That would make sense, though in practice it just doesn't look quite right
The rocks and details are what becomes red, not the dark expanse of actual blood - I'm not sure, but it didn't look good to me.
And anyway, the camera seems to be able to take photos outside the sub in what I had thought would be a congealed opaque liquid lel
@@RUNDEN_
I'm not a modder so I'm completely ignorant when it comes to this stuff; I just felt a need to point it out under the impression in which it would've been easy.
@@doctoramelioration7971 Sorry I didn't mean to give the impression that it's hard necessarily, more so that it just doesn't look right, or satisfying when the outside view is tinted red
Maybe a videographer with better photography skills or whatever it is would know the right artistic balance, but I tried several different tints and tint methods on the image to give that red blood look, none of which gave particularly good results. I just thought that since the submarines camera seems to take photos without any red tint too, that it probably is best to leave it as is - perhaps being submersed in blood under significant depth drowns the colour out of the blood if it were real anyway lol
@@RUNDEN_ what about adding a semi transparent red wall between the outside and the port hole, like the eye monster thing that gets anchored to you
@@tricksor6589 Oh, it's not a technical issue with doing it, I was able to tint the rendertexture and such, it was just that I couldn't get it to easily look the way I hoped it would, it just looks like a black and white image that's been tinted red, rather than a photo from a blood ocean
So many attraction behind this game began

The thing is, you shouldn't be able to see the world outside the window because the submarine isn't inside the world. The submarine isn't going anywhere, let alone on the map. You're actually controlling the camera as you navigate using the control panel. So props to the modders for pulling this off.
It's been so long but just in case, for those who don't get it, the "teleport" is suposed to be the fish creature pushing the submarine.

How I believe this works (correct me if I'm wrong) is that the iron lung you play in is in the void, while the 3d environment you take pictures of is fully modeled out, with the camera being separate from the sub itself. For this mod, all it does is it puts a screen of the camera's view in front of the porthole, giving the illusion of moving through the actual game world
Pretty much yeah, this is a pretty unimpressive mod when you think about it like that, it's not really doing anything lol
@@RUNDEN_ I wouldn't say that, it's still cool to actually see where you're moving

INSANE
Can you perhaps add a red tint to the window because you are in a blood ocean. I think everything is grey just because it makes the pictures look greyscale
Could you maybe make it so when you walk backwards, the camera stays in place. Because I noticed when you walk backwards to go to the camera button, the view outside the window moves forwards so the image looks zoomed in
Its probably because the submarine is still locked in place but the camera is moving. The image is only rendered on the outside of the window via a plane, kinda like a projector.
