I Hacked Iron Lung Again To Create The Ultimate Exploration Mod

- When Iron Lung's anniversary came up a few weeks ago, I decided to jump back in to the game again. But this time around, I didn't want to just show off the map. Instead, I wanted to create the ultimate exploration mod for anyone to play themselves. Here's what happened.

I had to hold off on releasing this video because I was waiting for Iron Lung to get approved on Nexus Mods first. Now that the mod is out there, you can grab it here: www.nexusmods.com/ironlung/mods/1 or check out some more clips and stuff on my Twitter: twitter.com/entropy_phi
Enjoy!
Judging by the comments on twitter and my last video, there are quite a lot of people that just want to explore the game. This isn't a replacement for the original experience, it's a bonus for those who have already played it. It's not for new players and it's not meant to be scary. Some people just want to see how it all works.
I think something that may help a bit with some horror aspects is to periodically have optional 'electrical blackouts' near the later areas of the game where the cameras begin to bug out then shut off periodically or becoming unreliable (static filters when facing towards points of interest, inverting which screen is using what camera), and also periodically shutting off with the lights as well. It's only a suggestion I offer because it could still provide some similar horror elements while still allowing exploration.
Also, it's an ambitious and unrealistic suggestion I make for nothing more than just silly fun to do it.
@@TabiTheCat This is for playing the game *after* the first playthrough, if you play the game again, it's not going to be as scary anyways, so why not go all in and see all the stuff you missed, and get a clearer view of all the cool stuff David put in the game unhindered. If you think this is made for a first playthrough, I think you misunderstand the point of the mod, did EphiTV hack the game to enable the hidden screen on their *first* playthrough? I don't think so, they only do it *after* playing the game normally.
its the first mod on there! nice work.
@@TabiTheCat if you don't like the thing the mod is doing, then don't play it. Some people may thing it's still scary.
Now it would be cool if you got the terminals to slowly break down over the playthrough until you have to take pictures to see.
I'd say make it so the terminals fault during the first fish sighting, the eye, and the final jumpscare. That keeps the illusion of the horror.
Finally, have the light point deactivate all but the middle terminal once the screen starts jittering/distorting.
I think the terminals should be a little grainier.
@@kevinmoore2474or start a sequence where you have to escape with no tvs. turn it into a fucking scary chase sequence until your monitors turn back on (but one of them is broken now) and you continue on like normal
I don't think all the monitors should have a full keyboard. Maybe just the one in the middle keeps the keyboard and the rest just having a on/off button or something.
@@Adriethyl
I think that's a side effect from using the terminal already in the game. Maybe they could lower the screens until the keyboards clip through the sub and appear hidden though.

This Mod feels like it could be the SM-8. The submarine that was meant to come back, better equipped and actually designed for the job.
It just need a coat of paint and more spacious!
That's an interesting idea there.
the only thing left to add is less rusty walls
It could be a follow up mission where the new sub tries to recover the footage
I was gonna say exactly that.
Sure it breaks the original purpose but...this game took over the WORLD in your own words, more than a year ago. Everyone who got something out of it...well, got something out of it already.
It is now time for the artist's drive to FUCK AROUND to kick in.
I feel like instead of treating this mod as being an expanded version of the intended experience of the original, it's better to see this mod as like, an alternate way of experiencing the game and its world. It can even be explained with some lore about this sub not being the SM-13, but a sub similar to the SM-8, which would explain why it's outfitted with better tools like cameras. Sort of like the way some video games have different player characters depending on the campaign or game mode you were playing.
The original purpose felt boring and monotonous
This is so neat. I love how much you've been able to play around with this game.
Says something about the game that despite it not being very replayable it still keeps drawing me back.
@@EphiTV you could say it has hidden depths!
I'll see myself out.
lmao yeah the Iron Lung main scene is an absolute mess. I didn't think I'd need to mess with it again.
But I don't have a good excuse for the computer object name. I knew by that point that people were diving into the game files and I still did that lol
Lol yeah I can resonate with the "I'm never touching this code again so whatever". I mean I hardcoded a bunch of references in the mod too just because it's quick and easy. But it's cool that the game blew up to the point that people were craving all the expanded lore and stuff. Looking forward to whatever wild projects you come up with next!
Damn David himself commented
I think best win is Dave admiring mod himself. I loved his reaction to it on Twitter, couldn't be better advertisement for a mod than game's creator talking about it in a positive way.
If you wanna reason this mod into the lore, you could say this is the scientist’s sub instead of the prisoner’s sub
I think the 5 monitor idea would work nicely if over time, the screens started to die so the last markers require blind navigating still.
Agreed
Dope idea!
That sounds awesome!
Wish other creator's put this level of efffort into the content they put out

they're always been a strange case to me.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. David struck gold with Iron Lung. I think he could make a fully fleshed out game with its premise, one with a massive map and procedural generation, a wider variety of anomalies, encounters, and dangers with lore behind them, more things to have to do around the sub in case of damage sustained as a way to encourage players to be much more cautious as to not lose precious oxygen, and an actual purpose for depth. The end goal would be to get as many pictures taken as you can and survive the expedition, with lore being the cherry on top.
He'd probably need either several years or a fully-fledged team tho...
Subnautica already exists
@@somerandomgadzo4778 thats nothing like subnautica?

I know that you want to make the tech talk light for non-programmers, but every time it's mentioned; I silently say to myself. Dang...
I try to find a balance where even if some topics might not make sense to everyone, the big picture is still understandable enough. Although I'm always working on improving those sections.
@@EphiTV it might make sense to release an additional video where you go into deeper technical details
I kinda wish there was an alternate version of this mod that just "keeps the sub window open", showing a projection of the outside through that little porthole.
I tried this first and it was very hard to navigate or see much with it. The window is small and not in a very good spot when you're constantly looking down at the controls.
@@EphiTV even still I think it'd be cool for emersion
Turns out, that does exist: czcams.com/video/0g6DO0nVcaI/video.html
There's a cheat code that does that
There is a mod for that already.
8:28 Lmao as someone who does a lot of Unity stuff I immediately guessed it was gonna be called something like "Cube (x)" or something along those lines.
Yeah I don't mind leaving (x) objects in my scenes, but not if they're sharing names with completely different objects. Especially for important things you interact with, like that terminal. But to each their own.
I hope this video blows up. Super sick mod. It’ll give a lot of people a reason to do another playthrough
This is great potential for a prequel where you play as a team of scientists who explore the blood ocean first with better submarine.
@@horohousuno, prequel is correct. The scientist exploration happened before the player’s exploration
shrek crashing through never fails to make me laugh
Very cool. I think adding a few things such as making the fish properly appear behind the sub, or just starting it further back so you can see it approaching on the screen, would've been a very in-spirit change to the game for this mod, but it works as you did it too. Unfortunately, the game just wasn't meant to be like this so parts like the many scares with the fish being 'close to you' on the sensors and so forth lose their edge when there's literally nothing there.. though it could always just be in your blind spots, I suppose. Quite interesting, and the mod is a simple yet great addition to the game and certainly nice for finding all those little unmarked ruins.
Yeah, I opted not to change it so that people can see a little bit of how it works behind the scenes. Like you mentioned there isn't anything there a lot of the time. But sometimes there's some interesting things to see, like the fish eye popping up briefly while you take a photo. Actually putting in stuff to make it look like it "should" be would be a much bigger project.
Funny, now there's a movie both staring and directed by Markiplier
Yeah, it's awesome to see the game continue to grow even more.
I am deeply scarred by the noise of the submarine's hull collapsing on itself due to intense pressure.
Imagine drowning in a literall sea of blood probably hundereds of meters below the surface.
I don't think I'd want to drown in a sea of water either. Maybe Dr Pepper.
@@looker999997 imagine the carbonation though
you'd probably die from the pressure and/or the monster before you could drown though, so at least it might be quick? not that that's much better, though, admittedly....
Don’t worry you wouldn’t drown. Your demise would instantaneous. You would be popped like a zit from the pressure! once the iron lung collapses.
aged like milk
For The jumpscare have the back camera Blue screen when the Eye jump scares you. To preserve realism like the intro.

While both Published by New Blood, they're entirely different.
Sorry I never got interested in dusk and I didn't know much about it
@@midway8612 don’t worry that seems to be the notion everyone else has.
Which is both funny and sad considering David Szymanski was so proud of making it with just wanting people to play it to show off the work and nobody remembered. Yet the small short horror game boomed in popularity.
It's really good, but I do think having a lot of noise, like how the photos are, may make it feel more spooky.
Yeah I could've taken it further to really mimic the in-game camera but it does get harder to see things clearly. I opted for a more exploration-friendly experience, at the expense of some horror.
@@EphiTV I think it would be good just to have an option to choose between spooktacular mode and explorer mode, for those of us who are in it for the nightmares

Now just give it a torpedo launcher, a happy ending and a bobblehead on the dash. And turn the sea into baked beans in the lore as well, gotta stay advertiser safe for CZcams!
I thought a periscope would make more sense, something you'd have to pull down and have the left/right controls on it to actively look around, would add more to the immersion.

In short, he effectively upgraded the SM-13 to the SM-08 before it's collision
A CEO played this game just above the Titanic Wreck, then after the jumpscare moment, he never came back.
Small recommendation: perhaps you could modify the computer screens to make the surroundings a dark red, given were in a blood ocean and all. I think it would look cool.
you shold have designed the cocpit of the ocean gate titan
To be honest, this version of the game would certainly be more stressful and terrifying to play

I appreciate you making time to create these videos. I know you are busy fighting crime and doing photos for the Daily Bugle, so it's just that much more impressive.
Time for a "Titanic" mod, lul.
Someone should make a movie based on this game.
Guess what
There's a man named Mark...
and his second name is plier...
So glad they added quality of life features to the sub you're design to die in!
Joking aside, this is really cool!
I feel like the bathroom example at 9:58 only applies to specifically people that sleep far away from their bathroom.
Since most people's are usually either as a side room in their room, across the hallway from their room,
or an illegal U-turn sha boing-boing from their room.
This is so cool. It would completely ruin a first playthrough, but when you've already played once or even a few times, it's really interesting to see everything in "real time" like this.

I'm just losing my mind right now because I took classes in Computer Programming, Game Development, Digital Media, and Graphic Design while I was in High School so all of this is just really exciting to find out! :D
Much appreciated! These projects are a lot of fun, although they probably take a little too long for the usual youtube cycle. Still pretty interesting to dig in to games like this every now and then.
@@EphiTV I bet they are! Too bad I can't remember all that I learned exactly due to my lack of proper equipment to practice. But, hey, if something that has taken a really long time to do and you deem it worthy to be uploaded, GO FOR IT! Keep up the great content man!
This would probably be more akin to what the SM-8 would’ve been like
I think what would’ve really been cool would be if when you take the picture that the fish shows up in the screens and the light in the sub shut off for a few seconds like it’s having an electrical problem, then when the screens and light come back on there’s nothing out there but you still get the giant fish in the picture
11:58 that god damn smirk 😂
I think it would be cool to have events that make each camera gradually get shattered and stop working as you progress. so by the end you will be completely in the dark, like the game is normally.
can you make a mod where you find the titanic instead of the monster ?
my only criticism is that the depth and oxygen meters are covered up by the monitors, though it does kind of add to the whole "makeshift deathtrap submarine" vibe
imagine a mod for iron lung like this, but it has all the things occurring ingame actually occurring outside the sub too
for example: the portal looking more wonky & actually being able to see the blood boiling around it
or seeing the fauna of the blood ocean stalking you from a distance
or noticing something is following you in the dark...
I think you should lower the "hertz" of the display to something like 12/15, change it so that it occasionally changes to static for a few seconds too or possibly have the it so that the player would need to turn off and the display for it work again. It might also help the illusion to lower the resolution of the screens.
The screens should also occasionally flicker.
@@Bacony_Cakes Or even better..
The screens are delayed, so you aren't seeing anything in real time
it would be better if the cameras had low franerate, like making it take pictures for example 24 times a second to give it 24 fps view but you will he in 60, it will make it more immersive, and wil give off that crt feeling.
Would be really cool if the monster would be actually moving around and taking photos would flash the monster to delay him
I'm so excited to watch new video about Iron Lungs
Nice vid mate!
Titan submarine experience:
It is never funny to joke about the ways real peiple have died. 😡
It blew up in june because of Nexpo's video about how terrifying the ocean is.
He did a big part about Iron Lung and how terrifying it is.
A small suggestion is that maybe you could place the SubCamera at the top of the trench map, just so you can't see the top of it, and right before the window closes, make the screens turn on, and have the SubCamera lower down to the it's original height, it would be a cool effect
Someone else mentioned this too. Would be a nice effect, but the trench is pretty short. You'd still see a black screen for 90% of the intro because there's nothing to render on the way down.
Bowl cut is crazy, but good video!
That is super neat. I don't have a computer so I'll just enjoy it here.
Impressive stuff! What a brilliant young man. I bet your parents are very proud of you.
It would probably take a lot of extra work and probably require some development but it would be really cool if you could see the creature in glimpses in the back window or have the cameras shut off temporarily when hitting something or being hit by the creature. Keep the whole “moments from collapse” feel of the sub even with the cameras
your voice is so calm bro, i love it👍
Great video but man, you got the Henry V haircut lol
Might just slip in my experience here, theres another game that uses similar mechanics and the elements of "youre alone but not really" kinda gameplay, called Voices of The Void, both are rather simple games but caused so much dread and primal fear
Im really happy that these types of games are booming lately :)
Haven't heard of that one before. Yeah it's cool to see indie horror try out some new things now that the jump-scare craze is dying down.
The Coalition of Iron if it had enough resources and gave enough of a stink to make an actually decent and functional submarine:
aint no way this man just made the first ever mod for iron lung.
It's a really cool mod but if the focus is about the cameras, i think it could be improved. I think one way of doing this is adding some artifacts in the screen, like a glitch effect, or the screen turning black for a second or maybe the screen turning into a black and white radio noise thing, like in old tvs. Another thing would work well is adjusting the display's framerate, maybe you could cap it at a low framerate and or make it fluctuate. You could also make the images a bit more low res at a farther distance maybe. You could also give the display a more fish eye camera warping effect
You look like someone who would skate board to the candy store. This is a compliment. Your shirt makes it better.
one thing i would have liked is when you get the pic of the fish's face is it's not there in the camera but when you take the pic it is and when you look back you can see like the back of it or something move off screen
You are a condemned prisoner, locked in a *totally radical sub* 💥💥🔥🤙🤙🤙🤙💯💯
Its called Cube (3) because thats the automatically generated name in unity for making a 3rd duplicate of a cube.
It could be that D.S. used a cube as a base for some random model like a pipe or a fire extinguisher, and then duplicated it and changed the position and model for it, and never bothered to rename it.
I know, it's just funny that an important unique object has a default name shared with like 20 other things in the game.
@@EphiTV Yeah- that F2 key loses value when you are trying to quickly make a lore update to hook people before attention fades
I would love to see a 3rd-person mod for Infliction by Caustic Reality; I really think it'd be fun to play from a different perspective & see some of the effects/character deaths from a new angle!
Fwiw I only found out about the game cause your video, and fell in love with it haha
Got algorithm'd in the best way
Funnily enough, I did actually think "cube" before you said it at 8:33. No parentheses, but I figures it would be an asset that they simply hadn't gone to the bother of naming. Was a bit surprised to see that I was right for the most part.
If you remastered this, I would recommend trying or using a free model with the creatures head so it doesn’t just look like a flat surface. Also if possible I would recommend making a black-and-white in the camera modes
the back camera could be slightly above the front cameras in middle , it would definitely be useful and more coinvent that away
I feel like only having one terminal camera would add to the atmosphere more. (as well as making the terminal display darker.)
Honestly love your haircut you look like tobey maguire's illegitimate kid
