    This song, M'APPARI, gives us the opportunity to compare Lanza to the great tenors of the 20th Century. This aria was sung by Gigli, De Stefano and Pavarotti and their versions are also on YT.
    Mario, you were the most sublime....thank you for leaving us with this treasure.

    This beautiful aria was sung in the Great Caruso by Mario Lanza just before he dies. Mario had dropped his two daughters off at the door of the movie theatre and were terribly upset because they thought he had actually died-a very traumatic experience for these two young girls who loved them very much. I read this in The Mario Lanza Story-there is only the third episode available now-too bad! In any case this is such a beautiful aria sung by the great Mario Lanza.!

      Quella di Mario Lanza é una storia unica e non spiegabile. La sua voce è stata tanto grande che ha suscitato invidia per tutto quello che lui rappresentava, un figlio di italiani che era riuscito ad ammaliare tanti milioni di americani col suo canto,col suo sorriso,con la sua spontaneità. L'invidia e le malignità hanno voluto spegnere quella voce magica.

    ***** Actually the last Caruso's performance was La Juive by Halevy, not Martha as in the film. The cause of his desaese was not so much Ether, but an on-stage injury: a falling pillar hit him on the back. The following bronchitis aggravated the situation & several days later he sufferd a throat hemmorage on stage in L'elisir d'amore, which was cancelled after the 1st Act. But he gave 3 more performances in December . Caruso's diagnosis was pleurisy & empyema. He underwent sev. surgical operations but his health turned to the worth & he died on August 2 1921 in Neapolis, Italy.

      I think Corelli was called The Prince of Tenors by someone. He only sang over 250 live performances of Turandot which were all very successful. It's very different than a studio recording of any one aria which can be repeated if the tenor doesn't like the results of the initial take. Corelli and other great tenors put their reputations on the critics line when appearing in live performances, where there is no forgiveness or security of the studio repeat recording if something is not right. Concerts are very enjoyable, but again there is the security of a microphone that can also make a singer feel more confident than singing an aria or an entire opera on stage. Corelli Tucker MDM Domingo Pav and many other tenors took big risks in singing live as appose to the safety and comfort of a studio.

    • @sugarbist
      @sugarbist Před 7 lety

      I have no doubt that Lanza's voice was big enough for any theater, and certainly among one of the most beautiful or the most beautiful tenor voice ever. He also had the innate ability to be intimate with his listeners. However, it takes a lot of discipline to learn and appear in a complete opera, or to sing 2 or 3 different roles in one week or even a month. Referring to the book"Tenor in Exile 1949" Callinicos claims that Lanza was irresponsible, and rather than to learn his craft referring to learning the Wolf Songs did compromise and cancel the recital turning to alcohol. Please read "Lanza Callinicos & Hugo Wolf" article by Derek McGovern. Calliicos claims that Lanza canceled 15 out out of 27 recitals. There is also evidence that Lanza was difficult student under Rosati as well. I believe that Lanza was a great talent with endless potential, but his personal problems and behavior, along with the possibility of suffering from depression, prevented him from achieving his life long dream of becoming an operatic star.

    • @sugarbist
      @sugarbist Před 7 lety

      The article written by Mc Govern states that Callinicos says that Lanza Cancelled 15 out of 27 recitals for various reasons. Yes, In one instance I read that, Lanza prepared himself both physically and musically for 6 months in preparation for his Las Vegas appearances for $50,000 a week, which was a fortune in the 1950s. He was well prepared going to Vegas , but he withdraw, initially stating that he had a sore throat and then reflecting that they would never ask Caruso to sing in Vegas so why should I? He withdrew from the appearances and had to settle another law suit. But again, a most beautiful voice that was endearing to an enormous audience and his presence on the screen is always heart felt.

    I sang Plunkett once in a concert version of Marta. I have always been surprised that this charming and very tuneful show has never really caught on in America. Another similar case is Nicolai's "Merry Wives of Windsor". Wonderful melodic and lush score but almost unknown on the great American opera stages. Sometimes I despair that opera is dying but then I get really depressed when I contemplate how much of the repertoire isn't even performed.

    To Schicoff1: were there reviews of his performance in Butterfly? Could he, do you think, have succeeded in opera? My guess is that with his incredible voice he had the ability. But maybe not the discipline??? I think I heard that he studied operatic singing seriously, so maybe. What a loss was his premature death.

      I can't find the Schicoff comment, but here goes. For anyone who knows anything about singing there is no question that he would have succeeded on the operatic stage - there wouldn't have been another tenor to touch him. The reviews of his New Orleans Butterfly performances were excellent. They wanted him back the following year for, I think, Traviata, but he was so caught up in the Hollywood publicity maw by this time that that his operatic plans had disappeared. The original generosity of his MGM contract, which was to give him six months of every year to concentrate on opera, came to nothing due to the phenomenal success of his movies which immersed him fully in the film world. He did, though, manage to continue his concert work alongside his films, and concerts always played a major part in his career. Many of the MGM directors didn't agree with Mayer's hiring of Lanza, and they expected him to be a flop and his contract quietly dropped - it probably would have been better for Lanza's operatic ambitions if that had happened. You 'think you heard' that he studied operatic singing? It's astonishing how this myth about him not having any training has persisted. He started his studies at the age of sixteen, where he lived in Philadelphia, and when he was 21 was auditioned by the conductor Serge Koussevitsky who was there for a concert performance. He said of Lanza 'such a voice only comes along once in a hundred years', and gave him a full scholarship to study at the Berkshire Music School at Tanglewood, Massachusetts. His graduation performances were hailed by those critics present, and what his next step would have been is unknown, because on his return home he received his call up papers and was drafted into the services. He continued singing while in the forces and, leaving in 1945, he immediately resumed his studies, in New York. In 1946 he began a sixteen month course of study with the famous Enrico Rosati, who had trained Gigli and James Melton, among others. Rosati said that he had been waiting for such a voice for years - another accolade. This was a final period of vocal consolidation for Lanza, who then embarked on his concert career with the Bel Canto Trio - the tour which led to his Hollywood Bowl concert, which was attended by Louis B. Mayer, who put him under the contract which could be said, with hindsight, to have put paid to his operatic ambitions. So yes, he studied operatic singing as you put it, for about ten years. I hope that has given you a bit more insight into Lanza's career.
