You Can't Build REAL Muscle as a Natural Lifter!

  • If you are a natural lifter you need to hear this. When it comes to building sizeable muscle and significant amounts of muscle mass you have likely been told that you would no longer be able to stay natty. Today, we discuss the natural limit and whether or not its possible to look great without indulging in PED’s or steroids.
    To start, whether you are a man over 40 trying to build muscle or a young kid, I want to take you back to a time when I first started lifting weights to build muscle. I was a skinny teenager training at USA Gym. There were two types of people in the gym; those that were competitive bodybuilders or at least competing in local bodybuilding shows and those that were recreational lifters.
    My guess was, if you were not competing that only 5 percent of the recreational lifters were using steriods or any type of PED.
    Today, that number is estimated to have grown to upwards of 50 percent or more. Included in this group of people using are those that are taking TRT or testosterone replacement therapy as well.
    The number of people within the group of competitive bodybuilders, athletes, actors etc that were using years ago that are using today has probably remained somewhat the same. Better drug testing practices have been implemented to perhaps decrease the number of professional athletes who use but that has likely been offset by the increased use in actors who use them to prepare for their roles.
    Either way, the most significant increase in use can be attributed to the introduction of vast amounts of fitness influencers on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, etc who likely use steroids themselves. The worst part however is that these influencers cast an unrealistic expectation upon their followers of what a “natural” lifter is supposed to look like.
    This causes those young kids who are just starting to lift to set goals and aspirations of looking like their favorite fitness influencer under the idea that they are achieving their physique naturally. Is this ok? I don’t believe so. The biggest disservice is that this sets young lifters down a path to potential health ruin as they indulge in substances without care for the potential ramifications down the road.
    The other side of this is that, in the pursuit of instant gratification, many young gym goers never even give themselves the opportunity to experience success in achieving body transformation. When one is able to put in effort and see the results for their hard work, the lessons are lifechanging and far reaching beyond just what you can do in the gym.
    People that experience the power of being able to transform their body learn the reward system of trading effort for accomplishment. This has a profound effect on what happens in other areas of their personal and professional lives.
    Now, we also have to focus on the older guys in the group who fall into one of three categories. Either you are the old gym veteran who has always been in great shape but have felt disheartened by your age related declines in muscle strength and size. Or maybe you are someone who not only wants to replace what has been lost but augment your natural testosterone stores by adding in supraphysiological doses and pass it off under the guise of TRT.
    The final group is those that are just starting out on their fitness journey in their 40’s. Getting into shape and lifting weights was never really part of their lifestyle before and they fear that they don’t have the 30 years or so necessary to put in the work to realize their gains.
    In any of the above cases, I break down the argument for why you still need to consider an alternative to PED’s or testosterone first before immediately opting to go down this latter path.
    The bottom line is, whether you are over 40 lifting weights or are a young kid hitting the gym for the very first time this week, you need to be aware of the temptations that surround you at every corner these days.

    I’ve been lifting for 25 years and the best results started to come after I turned 40. Mainly because I’m smarter about my training, nutrition and sleep.

      Also, I hear that artificial hormones can cause prostate problems. My dad has problems with his, and he's in his 80s. I definitely don't want to hasten those problems.

      Good on you man. The “optimal” workout life is usually short term and focuses on getting big in your prime. It’s a whole different gauntlet to lead a long life of fitness

    I'm 24, been training since 18 as a natural lifter. The temptation of PED's has been very high for me in the past (especially the last two years or so) but these videos and becoming educated in the risks that accompany them has steered me away.     I just turned 79, and started with weights about 4 yrs ago. I wasn't in bad shape before but wanted to face Old Age head on. I've lost 20 pounds (now 180) and my arms and chest have added a lot of definition. I feel great. I work out 3 days a week, and look forward to every session. A good trainer helps immensely.

    I'm 65. Just started lifting 1 year ago. No supps or peds. My arm size went from 12.5 to 16, and my strength has tripled. I look forward to year 2.

    Im a 40yr old woman (post 2 c-sections!) who has been hitting gym hard and naturally for 1 yr now. I am now regularly getting praise for my muscle development now from big guys in the gym and friends/work circles. People in the gym DO notice when you're working hard! You definitely can build muscle with determination! The physical improvements become motivation in themselves. I imagine a guy putting in proportionate strength training would be in impressive shape given their natural male physiological advantage.
    I've never felt better and have only ever used Jeff's guidance for every exercise and correct form. Love continually learning from your videos. Thank you for everything!

    I'm 58 and have been training since college days. I have my workout log for EVERY SINGLE DAY since 1998. Never desired to be biggest or strongest. Just desired to be fit. Looking great for 58 as I'm constantly told. All natural the whole while (started out at Lee Haney's Animal Kingdom and watched those monsters lifting). Captured my steady lifting on film since 1982. Be patient to all my young lifters. I was once you!

    Jeff and Jesse, Thank you for this valuable video.
    I want to add something that some (I hear) don’t think is possible.
    I have played around with weight training all of my life. However, I never got really serious about it until I arrived in my late 50’s. Yes, late 50’s. Now it’s for both hobby and health (mental & physical).
    I’m now 60 years old. Due to paying close attention to the guidance here at Athlean-X and a few select other sources, I self-educated myself on the best practices of strength training. I arrive to the gym with a plan, execute that plan, and then quickly leave to live life outside the gym.
    I am now following a protocol that has two main principles: Intensity & Consistency. I have a habit of going to the gym daily and for no more than 1 hour (I do a split body routine). So I am no gym-rat (insofar as spending loads of time there). I also now train in a consciously more intense manner than I ever have done before, emphasizing progressive overload and training to (or close to) muscular failure on every set.
    I have actually put on more muscle in the last 2 - 3 years than I ever did as a younger man. Frankly, it’s due to my current application of intensity, consistency, along with good nutrition, sleep, protein intake, and overall healthy life.
    When I go to the gym, as I workout and wait on all the younger men to get off their phones and off the equipment, I also watch how they train. More specifically, I watch how they don’t train. There is a conspicuous lack of training intensity with almost everyone I see at the gym. It’s clear they want more muscle, but they’re floundering through the exercises.
    It’s no wonder, then, that many of these younger men are (as Jeff highlights) looking for a hack, a shortcut, to more muscle, faster and easier. With an amateurish approach to training, they're influenced by (as Jeff & Jesse highlight here) all the shit-fluencers who explicitly or more discreetly encourage TRT/PED use.
    I’ll conclude with something I hope the younger men will read, digest, and act on. This world is in no need of more men with more muscle. Instead, this world is in need of more men with ethical strength, who are working to make this world a better, safer, saner place for all people. The degree to which strength training facilitates your growth toward a greater (ethical) strength that can actually help this world is the degree to which your trips to the gym are valuable for more than simply vanity and ego-tripping.

      I have to say that your comment about most people at the gym just going through the motions and essentially treating anything that happens in-between swiping their cards as a leisurely activity is very-very true.
      I know this because, being almost twice younger than you, I was just like this years ago when I started training. I'm just glad I never injured myself seriously or fell for PED popularity before I found this channel.
      What's somewhat hilarious is that there are people that pick heavy weights and think they lift well when both their form and, well, intention is dangerously poor.
      My heart aches each time I see a skinny kid deadlifting way above his level with a back so arched it could support a ceiling.
      But, what can you do. All you can is just make sure you do well yourself.

    Great conversation! I'm in the older starter group. 6 months in with Jeff's programs, and seeing great results. My wife says I look better than I did 10 years ago! All natural work 5 days/week. I couldn't care less what others look like, what they lift, what they take. My goal is to be a better me each day, week, month, and year. So far, so good.

      Just keep it up and trust the process. I started using some of Jeff's programs back in 2012. I now do most of my own programing but I regularly integrate recommendations from this channel into my programs and recycle exercises and strategies that Jeff posts content about or from his programs that I purchased. There will be ups and downs and I recommend you come back to these comments any time you hit a lull and need a little incentive/reminder. Don't let any plateaus discourage you. Those are milestones worth working through. Kudos on your new healthy habit!

    I'll be 51 in March. I lost 80 lb about 4 years ago. You are one of my main channels I watch. I never thought I could run and I run quite often. I have never taken any supplement or testosterone replacement. I know I need to work harder to get the things that I'm wanting and this channel I believe wholeheartedly is the one channel that's for me and many others. It puts the science and education in training.. I lost my weight simply by watching what I eat. I no longer eat processed foods.. and hitting the treadmill daily.. I give this testimony of myself with love and good energy

I’ve already achieved impressive results, and also receive positive comments from my family. I am 100% natural, and never even thought of taking any drugs. Thanks to you, you have unlocked a treasure of knowledge on how to train effectively, and most importantly, safely.     42 yr old here, never trained in my life. Worked in IT with the body to go with it. I started training seriously at 39 and figured it was my last chance to turn my life around. I couldn’t even do a single push up and now I do weighted pull ups every week. This is something I never imagined I could do. I started with bodyweight training because I was too ashamed of my body to go to the gym and didn’t feel I belonged there with all the huge guys potentially on PEDs. Now I’m doing Calisthenics and free weights. Never considered taking PEDs because it would defy the point. It was consistency and discipline that allowed me to transform my situation and build strength and muscle. Your body will adapt if you put in the work at 40, but it takes a tremendous amount of effort and discipline. If you are considering taking PEDs at 40 before ever lifting a weight, ask yourself are you going to have the grit it takes to carry you to your goal?

      I did the same exact thing except haven't reached 40 yet (38). It took about a year and a half of strength training. I went from not being able to do much and embarrassed to being able to bench 350lbs and climbing. I'm shocked at the results and it's natural. But it does take a lot of dedication.

    My greatest gift as a lifter is I go into the gym and just lose myself in the regimen. I’m so deep into the workout and the intensity is so high that everyone in the gym “disappears”. I don’t have time to compare myself to others because I’m too busy kicking my own ass from start-finish.
    However, I can sympathize for those youngsters who have been born into this comparison game

    Turned 40 this year and got back into the gym after about 15 years of not taking care of myself. I'm now in the best shape of my life and my progress and gains have been outstanding. Being more knowledgeable at this age combined with motivation and determination has led to a physique I'd be proud to have at any age.

    Body dysmorphia is very real. Over 40, natural female lifter here. I trained a bit in college but really started lifting seriously 5 years ago. For me, it's about consistent training, nutrition and making sure I get adequate rest. I lift, full body, 4 days a week and had to accept that I really need a rest day in between. I follow macros with 160g P. Very happy with the strength I've developed - DL 1/4 205, BP 2/6 115, Squat 1/4 185 and I feel fantastic. Also, I focus more on form and bracing, so my numbers are probably lower, but I am injury free which I think is an accomplishment. I lift about 12 hours a week.

      Im also a female. I was lifting regularly a few years back, 6 days a week, 2+ hours a day. I was making amazing gains but all I saw was these other women who had been training years longer.
      I felt like my stomach was still too fat, and my butt/legs were too small...
      Then I got pregnant, had a ton of complications and injuries, and lost nearly all my progress. Now I look back at my photos that I took when I THOUGHT I was fat, and I realize how distorted my eyes were.

    From the UK.
    I turn 50 next year and been away from the gym for 5 years. I returned to the gym this June after 2 years of sorrow which included losing someone very close to me.
    I lift naturally and feel stronger than anytime before. I also combine this with taking care of my joints and making sure I am injury free.
    I train 3 to 5 times a week depending on my work shifts. I train no matter my state of being.
    Sleep quality is also key and I am not afraid to say sometimes this does slip.
    Nutrition is the next barrier for me to break through.
    I train for myself and no one else 😎🖖

      @@LMF5000 I don't do any thing fancy to take care of my joints. It's about awareness and carrying out gentle movements and stretches beforehand. My left shoulder is a weakness from a childhood injury. So I am very conscious of that. I also research different exercise practices regarding movement and motion. I then try them out to see if there's any benefit for me.

    I am 67 - have lifted off and since mid 40's. I have been more dedicated over the last 18 months and working to overcome many old injuries which I am delighted to say can be done. I have regained my physical confidence. I have put on visible muscle, improved posture, mobility and sexual desire. Not only am I increasing my strength but my entire physique and mental state is improving. If you want to reverse aging - lift, using high intensity.

      I work the muscle group involved even, if there is a tendon tear, directly to just below damage level. Its hard to identify the actual muscle but as you work it you also use whatever manipulation to stimulate repair - massage like deep and intense with massage guns or wall mounted massage aids or direct with pros. Even joints like a knee which had ACL replacement 20 years ago plus lots of medial damage. I am using direct movement - like squats lunges and also backward sled drags and forward sled pushes. After decades of pain when hiking and so on the pain is diminishing to almost nothing and I have full confidence in it while carrying weight (hiking with heavy packs) on rough terrain. I believe that you can reactivate long neglected muscle groups and effect repair.@@davidbrown4271

    Excellent vlog. I’m 61 and only started this fitness journey 5 years ago. Watching your videos and learning from your always science based routines and principles, make me respect your work. This was enhanced with the transformational coaching you did to Jesse and the hard work done by Jesse. I’m 6’2” and I’ve been on 185 lbs for almost 4 years and you guys are an inspiration to wake up everyday and keep working harder to see what I’m capable of doing. Thank you!

    I completely agree with everything said in this video. When the pandemic started I was 300 lbs. In 18 months I got down to 163 lbs by getting my nutrition in order. Then I added a workout plan and I’ve added 25 lbs of muscle. I’ll be turning 40 in 2 weeks and I’m in the best shape of my life. I’ve never considered using enhancers for the reasons mentioned. This channel has helped me tremendously in crafting a workout plan that works best for me while still allowing me to get the desired gains. Now let’s see where I’m at when I turn 50!

      Awesome story Aaron! I got my best gains in my 40's. Don't listen to any of the judgmental BS that you can't improve on what you've built because you're older and that you need TRT or other drugs. It's simply not true.

    I’m 20 and been lifting for 3 years. Started around 140-145 pounds as a fairly skinny guy and am now sitting at 175. Achieving this naturally I imagine to be far more rewarding than if I had used PEDs. For anyone out there starting lifting, please just give your natural self a shot first. Through dedication and discipline you will build something amazing

    Oh, this was such a great and timely message. I’m 47 years old and I’ve always had a naturally lean physique, but I’ve always wanted more size and recently I’ve been hitting the weights hard for the past couple of months, and I have seen little gains with all the effort and calorie surplus which has led me to get discouraged and even think about using additional help but after watching this, and hearing what you said, you are absolutely right, we need to stop comparing ourselves to everybody else, with that being said, this was definitely motivational to keep me encouraged throughout my fitness journey, thanks, Jeff.

      You've got a little more than a decade on me. I had a coworker who was in his 50s and OBVIOUSLY used. He looked great but man-oh-man was he a loose cannon! One minute he's your best buddy and then next minute he's in a roid-rage and you'd better get out of his way! He finally broke down and had to apologize in front of the entire company... he literally broke down crying! After that whole experience, my opposition to roids was completely solidified.
      It's just not worth it. Ever.

      Correct choice also because once you start riding the steroid tiger, you cannot get off without crashing hard. You are stuck for life or you crash, sometimes with much lower T than before you started. Sounds like a horrible fate.

    You make many great points in this video. I turned 61 years old in October. Been working out at the gym since I was 16 years old in my hometown. Over the course of my life, I have yoga training, acquired a black belt in taekwondo And participated in many other physical regimens from cycling to running. My point is that it’s a lifelong process and that is how I look at it. As they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day. To me, for optimal, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and well-being, I have always taken the long term approach. Make no mistake, I was the skinny kid in the gym that wanted to have big muscles too. I had such a high metabolism. At 61 now I am making better gains than I ever have had any other point training in my life. Don’t worry about what other people are doing in the gym or how they look. Do your own thing and keep plugging away. This is for your whole life.

    Thanks for the open conversation. I'm 66 which probably puts me at the far end of the older group. I've trained on and off for many years, never seriously. I''ve been more serious about it over the last few years. My goal is to delay the effects of aging as long as I can so I can enjoy life to the fullest. My competition is myself. I'm working to get better in every training session. At this age, I know there are limits to how much muscle/strength I can and I sure as hell know I'll never deadlift like Jessie. (Your deadlifts are f@#*king amazing!) I'm not planning to take any PEDs. In fact, I'm pretty late to the game for even taking supplements. I've only been using a pre-workout for about a year, and only last week added Creatine. LOL. I watch your videos because you're showing us how to train safely. That's important for any lifter, but for someone like me in my mid 60s, I definitely want to avoid injuries as long as possible because it'll be a long way back. Thanks again for all your great content!

    Jeff I am 65 and have been lifting all my life. I’m 5’7” 155lb and in the best shape of my life. I’m lean and cut and owe that to you. I follow you and constantly update my lifting according to your video. When I was younger I weighed 185 and was huge but all natural. I competed in dancing so I got a reputation and was crating routines for all the body builders in St Louis. The use of steroids is out of control however I still feel that you can gain muscle and look fantastic if you put in the time and effort and at 65 I can prove it. Owe so much to you!! Elliot Silk

    Thank you guys for sharing this. I've recently been going back to the gym after a few years of missing with my absolutely wonderful partner who joins me. One of my biggest struggles, oddly enough, is my size. I'm 6'6" around 300lbs. When I was in high school wanting to play football I was already 6' at 14, so of course they immediately threw me on the O line, and wanted me to lift as heavy as possible as often as possible. Lifting didn't come easy, and growth was slow, but most importantly painful. I figured it was just "no pain no gain" and it would get better, but it only got worse. After leaving football after just one year, I didn't go back to the gym until my sophomore year of college. I have a uncle who was a body builder who helped got me an exercise program and I followed it religiously, but after a month the pain in my shoulders became too much and I went to a doctor. It turns out I had a small deformity in clavicles that made them grow longer than usual and curve slightly downwards. After lots of PT, they finally allowed me to have a surgery to shorten them and clear out what turned out to be bone spurs that were effectively shredding my shoulder tendons apart. Now, years later, even after more PT post surgery, I still have some pain in my shoulders, albeit much less than before. But I still struggle to lift, and the pain is not only discouraging but makes me fearful to injure myself again. Being big, I've always heard people say things like "If I was your size I'd be playing in the NFL" and things of those nature, which on the surface is a compliment but underneath just makes it feel like my size was wasted on me. And it's rough struggling to bench even just 15lb dumbbells because "Why is that big guy struggling with those tiny weights? That's pathetic." I've gotten in the habit of projecting those kinds of insecurities as false expectations from other people, especially other people who actually matter. This channel in particular has been incredibly helpful in allowing me to work out those weaker areas more safely and confidently, and having my girl as a supporter to remind me of what matters has been doing wonders. Can't thank you guys for all the guidance & work you do to help guys like me feel ok to struggle in the name of growth, regardless of what others may think. Much love!

    Jeff, you're a legend in my book. Always giving us solid, experienced advice and most of it for free. Taking the time to be a genuine voice in the abyss of fitness content. I've been following Athlean-X since I was 16, starting out with weights. I'm now 26 and, if it wasn't for the strong foundation I set by studying hundreds of your videos, there's no way I would have established the naturally-healthy body I currently have. And the benefits attained from that fitness/health proficiency go further than just looking good; there's the good mood, the consistency, the mental and physical fortitude - the feeling of personal satisfaction bleeds into all facets of life. Looking at who I am today, I feel so much gratitude that I've had access to your advice. Sure, personal effort is always necessary and will always pay-off but the fact remains that you have been a positive, life-changing mentor and inspiration to me. I bet you've been this for thousands, if not millions of others, as well. Truly, Jeff, thank you for everything you've done with Athlean-X.     Jeff/ Jessie, Just turned 74 and back in the day my loved Charles Atlas booklets on body building Dating myself. I was always smaller than others and began lifting weights and etc. Saw many younger than me on PEDs and decided not to go down that path. After neck, lower back surgeries x2, labrum tear, brachial plexas atrophy on right bicep, anterior deltoid, pectorial atrophy I am still lifting. Thanks to your education, training techniques you have shown me alternatives to my training, whether using bands or making safe adjustments so, I will be able to keep training and am happy with my development at my age. Keep up the good work with alternatives to allow us old guys to keep training despite medical issues. Your a life saver.

    You guys are right. We should never risk our health because we feel insecure about our own bodies. We should feel motivated, inspired, and hopeful about getting stronger and healthier via training. The ultimate goal, at least in my opinion, is to become happy, confident, and proud about what you've achieved. The journey is just as important as the destination.
    Having said that, I'm a 39 year old father of 2 boys (5 and 2) from Massachusetts. Both of you, Jeff and Jesse, have inspired me to start working out again. Jeff does an amazing job at explaining the workouts, nutrition, and science behind a lot if it, and Jesse makes it all entertaining and light hearted. It makes it easy to learn and fun to try.
    Since I started my journey with you about 1 year ago, I have lost 30 pounds and 4" around my waist, my cholesterol has greatly improved, I no longer have a fatty liver, I have a lot more energy, and I'm feeling a lot better, happier, and more confident. My journey has only begun!
    I want to thank both of you and everyone else at Athlean-X for inspiring, motivating, and educating us. Even if you can't see or hear about all of us, please know that you are all changing and saving a lot of lives. Thank you!

    I almost lost my life from juice. 15 years natty I went all in on some gear with my gym bro. I got massive, it was great. UNTIL I almost offed myself from depression, covered in acne , arrested for road rage (followed a guy into a target parking lot and pummeled him), lost my fiance because of my scary behavior as well as lying about my use. My nuts shrunk up, the list goes on. I'm starting to rebuild my life but it's hard to get over. I was trying to look better for my fiance and ended up losing her. I look back with nothing but regret and that was surely my life's biggest mistake....the mental aspect isn't talked about enough either. I had depression before starting but when I was ending my cycle it was almost too much. Thanks for spreading this super important message, the young impressionable minds don't understand the true impact it can have. You guys are the best.

    I’m 60 and started late working out. The one point you make that no longer applies is “your goal should be comparing yourself with yourself”. At 60 I’ve learned that what I see and what I’m working towards is a better physical condition that will last, not the instant gratification. That should apply at any age.

    I am a 1956 model and i have never done any exersize of any kind. The at the age off 60 i sold the farm and started exercising that got me to stumble over a guy’s you tube site and this guy got me to where I am today. He helped educate me and I was standing 1.66m in my shoes 65kg nice stomach and I have preciously been a artisan fitter 80 percent off my career. Farmer 20 percent. I am happy for where I am now. I started out with training and you guys have helped me a lot with my training so far and I’m happy with how I have progressed. Here’s my figures that wasn’t my doing but thanks to you guys.
    Still 1.66 m 74kg +_ 23 percent body fat. And happy to have been given the opportunity to train with the best and the most effective way and natural body as can have. Thanks you two for all the support and encouragement over the years naturally.

    This is awesome. I'm in the "veterans" group. I been working out pretty steadily since before puberty. I have not ever used PEDs, and I've even stopped supplements at this point (I don't consider protein powder a supplement...it's just food in powder form). I have seen with my own eyes how a focus on diet, proper sleep/rest, and a great workout program (like AX Beast) can provide IMPRESSIVE, natural, steady and sustainable results. I love how I look, and love how impressed others are when they see me. Thanks Jeff. This needed to be said

    Early 30s, just started training with the help/inspiration from your videos. To lose COVID weight and tone up. Was 5'11" 180lbs and after a year now a lean 150lb. Achieved my goals of abs and a nice physique. Through diet, discipline and determination I've seen my body transform. I'm happier now than ever. Don't forget the mental health benefits from exercising. If you have stress and anxiety the gym can help. Focus on your own journey and don't compare yourself to others.

    I started working out at 70 I am now 77. I’ve had growth and 100 pounds weight loss. Without trt but I am now under a doctors care using TRT.

    I have been lifting for 3 years I started at 53 and I'm 56 years now.
    I'm 100 natural I will never compete but I'm in the best shape of my life.
    The whole trick is being consistent...

      Keep in mind what will happen when your friends eventually have to come off it. They will shrink dramatically, and you will look way better. Trust me, I've been lifting for a long time. I've seen monsters come off and look like they barely lift. Plus, they never get the motivation back to build muscle naturally due to the fact that they've seen easy gains and their test is crashed. Natural gains are loyal gains, and even when you have periods of off time from the gym, you get it back quickly. Not so for the enhanced that try to go back to natty.

    Jeff and Jessie, thank you so much for this video. I am only one year older than Jeff and too have shared a similar path from bad nutrition as a kid to lifting since I was 14. I have always wanted to compete but that door closes more and more as I refuse to use PED’s, not just for my own health but as a role model for my kids. The sport and art form of bodybuilding is being destroyed. This year I turn 50 I still work out religiously. It takes HARD WORK AND DEDICATION. At this point I am happy to know that most people do not look like me at 50 but I still wish we had a legitimate platform to celebrate and share our TRULY NATURAL successes. I would love to say more but for now. Thank you both again for always saying what no one else has the guts to say.

      Congrats on your success Stephen. A suggestion... if you really want to compete, why not see if there are other guys who feel the same way and start something informal and simple just to scratch that itch? I bet there are more guys like you who feel similarly. It just takes one person with the willingness to get that ball rolling. Who knows, over time you may end up being the guy who started a new organization for truly natural bodybuilders?

    I was a little down on myself because I thought I was a hard gainer. Then I found out most of the people I was looking up to gains-wise were juicing. It actually made me feel better about myself and encouraged me to compete only with me! Since then I haven't been more focused and now I'm proud of what I see in the mirror.     Thanks Jeff. I have an 8 year old who is involved in martial arts and is already interested in lifting due to being around what i do (muay thai/mma). Trying to make sure that when he gets older he doesn't fall into these traps and is around good influences in the gym is a major stress for me.i have been offered peds over my time and said no but the influencers scare me with their influence over these young guys. I appreciate your videos.

    I’m a Natty and I’m bigger than even the younger guys in the gym. It’s all about putting in that effort! Just like anything it takes time! And you’ll be more impressed once you get there by the work you put in!

      Same here. Im 42 this year, all natural. I’m more cut than I was during my late 20s and 30s and out lift the vast majority of younger guys at my gym. Like you said, train smarter, work harder sleep well.

    52 years old, following your CZcams content/programs and I'm packing on muscle consistently (without any PEDs)... I now have visible lats and traps as well as biceps beginning to have nice peaks and my chest development has never been better... thanks for all you do for us Jeff!

    Thank you Jeff I appreciate your channel & knowledge. I have watched and followed your channel since 2015. It was a year when my midlife crises peaked. The new friends were not good. I was physically abused and it was not something I was used to and couldn’t protect myself. Following your tutorial gave me the best physique in shoulders and arms. I ever had before that my legs were always good being a natural sprinter. So the work on leg day enhanced what was already there. Not once did I consider any form of PED. Your program and instructions on correct lifting techniques, rest periods and targeted specific muscle groups. Helped save my life and dignity. The bully tried again and this time through the strength of one palm to the chest. I said back off. He flew backwards and never bullied me again. During pandemic I stopped exercising. This year I had a mini stroke. I’m now ready to start exercising again and your program is the only one I will use at 63 I am confident I shall be looking good not massive but definition and strength. Thank you for caring for the male population.💪🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

    I started lifting at 22. I’m 30 now. Might not look like it, but I’ve seen serious results. Never once considered PEDs. I’m happy being in the 170 range. I’m happy with the work

      tbh I like blending in and not looking like a gym bro when I have my office clothes on. I just look like a normal person. But women have commented on how hard my muscles feel and how strong I am. the natural athlete look and lifestyle is great, I feel great, I have no desire to take any PEDs. I'm happy slowly progressing my squat and deadlift numbers and slowly improving my 5k and 10k times and feeling great throughout the whole process. I'm never going to be a bodybuilder or professional athlete or even the fastest club runner but I'm happier just being fit and working on myself at my pace.

    I LOVE your videos.
    I started training in high school. Played football, ran track, earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
    I'm now, a 60yr old cancer survivor. I'm a Licensed Massage Therapist 23yrs, Personal Trainer 25yrs. I encourage people to train and eat for quality of life, NOT to impress anyone. They learn to live well, NATURALLY and happily.
    I'll continue to educate my clients in a NATURAL and SAFE lifestyle.

    I’m 22 and I’ve been lifting since I was 16. Jeff you have helped me understand the foundations of exercise and really helped me understand what it means to workout. To have people my age turn to enhancements, when we have the edge of age, is sad to see because we have the most potential for growth. I have my dream physique currently and I could never understand why I would need more. What we have currently is greed in this world and these shitfluencers are spreading this principe of taking short cuts and having to much in such a short period of time.

    I’m 30 now and started at about 18-19 and you were the first and only fitness CZcamsr or content creator I ever followed. I’m so grateful because my approach has always been the science behind training and all the other realistic aspects of the journey. I have never incurred an injury in the gym, put on a considerable amount of muscle while keeping body fat low, and get compliments/questions about my training from friends and guys at the gym. There are so many positives that come from training naturally. You really get in touch with your body and what works and what doesn’t work for you, which translates to general health and well-being as well. You feel a real sense of accomplishment that comes with the mastery of your own body. It’s instills patience, work ethic, consistency and dedication that help in all aspects of life. It’s discouraging and odd for me to think about guys starting out having this mindset that the only thing that matters is the visual in the mirror and it has to happen now.

      Well said man, same age and I boxed when I was younger and was in great shape. It never quite left and I retained a decent build but decided to start taking my exercise more seriously and the gains have been incredible. Outside of looking better, my overall life has improved in nearly every area. Feels great.

    I'm 52 and I trained like a fiend in my 20's and early 30's...I had great results and even got a masters in exercise physiology....And people would regularly accuse me of taking steroids. They were offered to me and all around me, and I was even tempted as a 20 something, but never took them. I then took 18 years off to drink beer and get fat, but started hitting the gym again about 18 months ago. I got most of my abs back and alot of my former muscularity back the same way I did it when I was young; through hard informed training training and nearly obsessive consistency. I'm thankful every day that I never crossed that line to take PEDs and am now completely convinced that even people in their 50's and beyond can realize profound gains with good old hard work and stubbornness. All of those who took shortcuts when I was younger did not endure...they did a few cycles, got some okay results (and acne) then lost interest and moved on to the next instant gratification, having nothing to show for it now other than an asterisk when they recount their former glory.

    Thanks for the thoughtful and respectful messaging on this topic and for your helpful videos. A friend introduced me to the gym in my mid20s, then career and kids became a focus for 30 years, and I returned to recreational training just earlier this year. My time is still squeezed, so I prefer to train at home with a bench and dumbbells (and I’m really appreciating your recent dumbbell focused videos!). No PEDs now or then. I can lift more now than then (which surprises me). I have no big training goals - just aiming for better and enjoying the journey, and the results have been satisfying so far.

    Great video….I’m in the older camp. I’m 56 yo and started watching this channel last year, when I decided to make a change. I have taken close to 15 years off of exercise and nutrition…i was a mess. I wrestled in HS, competed in nearly 100 triathlons, including Ironman in HI, but due to wearing out my knees I just burned out..hence the 15 yr hiatus….Fast forward to last year where I decided to make a change. Starting at 221lbs and 30% BF…through this channel, and mental toughness today I am 178lbs, and 15.5% BF….I am a completely different person today. I refound my love of the gym, nutrition, dry heat sauna. I still struggle with sleep…but this new lifestyle is something my wife and I love…we go to the gym together and it has become our way of life now…i owe a great deal of gratitude to you Jeff and this channel! Thank you!

    Thanks gentlemen. I started at 49. I'm not 54. I've been working on nailing my diet and training along the way with occasionally watching you guys. I appreciate your video. You are right. I may not be impressive to many people, but I am impressed with the improvements that I have made along the way. I also realize that I need to live with the bad decisions I made in my younger years and not compound it with a new bad decision of using PEDs to try and "catch up".

    I lifted for 20yrs from mid teens but that stopped in my mid 30's when divorce changed everything. Career pressures increased. For the next 20 years, I stayed active through walking, and playing golf and badminton when time permitted.
    In my late 50s a friend doing push ups in a fund raising challenge invited me to join in. He was posting videos of his PU sessions, so I set the mobile to video record, got on the floor and struggled to do 8. Watching the video back I was shocked by the lousy form. That episode was a real awakening. I felt sorry for myself for a few months, and during that time, became aware that poor nutrition combined with the ageing process, was taking a toll.
    After that, I started regular push ups and squats. Later, I dug my original weights out of the shed. Two years on, I acquired a frame which includes a pull up bar and handles for dips.
    Fast forward, I've just turned 65 and I'm in the shape of my life!! 😁 100% natty, I've never touched PEDs.

    Thank you Jeff, I really appreciate your work. Your knowledge has really helped me out a lot in life, I went from being an overweight kid who knew nothing about fitness or health, to being in solid shape now and still just on the beginning of my journey, through your info I lost tons of fat and gained muscle and strength as well as a lot less joint pain and better mobility. Exercise went from being a chore to being something I love and do everyday. But most importantly it gave me life stability and happiness and gave me a new drive to try new things and to challenge myself in all aspects of life, so much so that it's now my career path as a physical therapist as i am going through school for it right now to one day live out my dream to be able to help others.

    I’m 53 and a former NCAA basketball player and in the US Marines for over 10 years. Running, lifting and swimming for athletic and functional purposes since I was in my early teens and with the exception of creatine and protein supplements, never used anything else. Am I as strong today or as fast as I was I was at 28? Not even close! I still work out almost every day, have always shifted the lifting to adapt to new exercises and techniques and absolutely love Jeff’s training advice - best I’ve ever had. No matter what you do, age will catch up and if you’re stronger at 50 than you were at 25, you weren’t working hard enough back then! Age is a tough thing to deal with but it hits us all - best thing is to keep taking care of the body you’ve been blessed with and keep it functional. Don’t f it up with steroids and other bs - just be disciplined and consistent and it will pay off in the long run.

    I didn't start exercising until 38. I'm 41 now, and my 13 year old son is getting interested in lifting. I've never really been interested in any PEDs, but my son has friends already on them, so he has had some interest. I've shown these videos from Jeff to him, and they've opened his eyes! He only wants to be natural. So, thanks to Jeff for the help!
    As far as building after 40. It's still working for me! Again, thanks to Jeff AND Jessie. I'm in no way as big as I want to be, but multiple people have asked me if I'm on anything, including family. My point is...I don't know? It can be done. And I definitely agree with this video. Who cares how much bigger someone else is!? People looking at you and liking what they see is nice, sure. But the benefits that I get in almost every other aspect of life is a far better reward!!!

    I started training in my 40s after suffering from arthritis since my teens and not thinking weight lifting was possible for me. Turns out when done safely it’s the best thing I can do and I’m now in the best shape of my life. Aesthetically I’m still miles off where I want to be but every week I do an extra rep or two or add a little more weight and I know the results will follow. As long as you can better yourself that’s all that counts. Great video as per usual.

    Gentlemen, I have to say this is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen on CZcams on any subject. I can only hope the people you’re trying to speak to actually watch it but the comments not just on Health, but on life were fantastic.
    My only disagreement if you called people “old“ And then referenced 40. Man I’m 51 so it hurts to hear you say that!
    I worked out in the gym when I was in my late teens and early 20s but then didn’t get back into the gym for more than 20 years. I just started back, about a year and a half ago almost 2 years. I’m completely natural I think the most important thing I would suggest for people like me is to take periodic measurements. The changes and gains come so slowly that even though you can see you’re lifting more weight it’s hard to see the difference on your body. But when I go back over the last two years worth of measurements. I realize how dramatic the change has been. So even starting just before 50 the potential to make dramatic changes in your body is still there 100%.

    Just turned 47. Started 3 or 4 months ago. Got my nutrition locked in FIRST, started lifting AFTER. Learned all I know from Jeff. I am really proud of the progress I've made without enhancement. I've been shocked by how fast progressive overload can go, even being a natural lifter. It just seems like commitment is the rarest currency on the planet, why work when there's a pill? I'm doing recomp stuff, not a hard gainer. Seeing changes in the mirror and not so much on the scale. Train exclusively at home to avoid gym-bros, I don't need any of that! Get good feedback from friends, sure, but it doesn't matter. This is for ME. Thank you, Jeff and Jesse.

    I started following Jeff’s programs in 2019 at age of 39. Started with AX1. At this time I had lost a bunch of weight and I was slim but very little muscle. End of 2019 I started Beaxst program and that’s where I truly started lifting. It’s been a journey since. My results may not be as fast as they could’ve been when I was in my 20s but I’m look, feel and perform in every way better than when I was in my 30s. I constantly get complimented on my physique. That said, I don’t use any PEDs. I did consider trt once and got tested with my doctor. My testosterone levels were normal so I let it be. Trust me, building a body without the use of cheat codes and just on your effort is way more fun and satisfying. Most importantly, what Jeff said, the goal is to get healthy in add other health issues. In short, stay healthy, stay fit and stay clean. Cheers!

    Thank you. I give and gave this speech constantly. I'm 57 years young. People of all ages ask if I'm on something. Just like Jeff I've trained hard and smart from the age of 14. I can still do things that people half my age or younger do very proficient. I have never been interested in using anything. I take pride in being natural and doing just as much if not more than some that use extras.

    I’d love to know Jeff’s opinion on people like me, who due to medical reasons (I’m an addict in recovery - 8 years clean) my testosterone production was all but killed off. I started TRT last year. When I had my original blood work done, my teat level was 108. So I truly believe that I legitimately NEED the TRT, as it allows me to live my life without dealing with all of the extreme side effects of having nearly zero testosterone.

    I am 58 and am still enjoying lifting weights. I grew up in the Arnold era and never thought i could get to that level,but being young and stupid i did try steroids. My gains in strength were better than my training partner, but it never lasted when I stopped. I train now for my own personal benefits in trying to stay healthy and active. I agree with everything you say, and i wish i had the same advice when i was younger. Be the best you can be and not what social media is promoting. Train smarter not harder is the best advice i can give.

    I've been natural all my life, and struggled with putting on muscle and removing fat, but I've always had a large frame (short and stout). It wasn't until I got my food intake under control and started exercising on a normal basis that I finally started hitting my goals. Then in 2020 I got hit with rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 35, and I lost a lot of strength and motivation and realized that though my diet was better it was far from great. I continue to push through the RA and have completely changed my diet to reduce the immunity response and though it isn't perfect, I've regained a lot of my strength and movement and am currently doing yoga and weight lifting and taekwondo and I'm almost to blue belt.
    It's been a long journey and while steroids would help with RA, I believe that I can work through it and regain my health and my movement. The trials have been great, but they've reinforced my faith and my determination.

    This 20 minute video alone has generally made me realise it’s not a sprint it’s a marathon. I will admit I have been massively sucked in by these shitfluencers around me without even noticing . I started gym weighing 73.4kg after 1 year now weighing in at 84kg admitting I’m on test 250 from 6 months in I have been a ego lifter since the day I started without even noticing. You really have opened my eyes. as u say is the extra 3 inch worth it I have now got injury because of my ego lifting because I want to look like guy next to me at the gym .after watching this video I am now going to go back to basics learn forum , mobility and then go on weight increase . I was going to go back on the test after my 8 week break but now I will go natural and learn the art of training . It does not matter what people looking at me think like the guy next to you said I should be doing it to impress my self no one else. The bit that really hit me was when the guy next to you said I could be making people look at me like how did he get there I want to be like him basically being shitfluencer to the people around without noticing .

    I’m 36 years old and served 10 years in the Army. I’ve been making changes and seeing results. Stopped drinking a year ago and that alone has pushed me in the best way. Where I’m at now is thanks to you Jeff. Almost exclusively watch your videos for workouts.
    My thoughts are if you need a drug to achieve it, probably ain’t worth it.
    I’ve never had a six pack and that’s my goal for now. I figure I’ll get there eventually if I keep working at it. Thanks for what you do.

      I tried and failed for a few months(years really). Started by controlling how much I bought at the store. Then I avoided everybody and stopped going to places where I would have access to booze. I didn’t tell anyone that I stopped drinking until a few months sober. After the weight started falling off after 2-3 months and my face de-aged the motivation to stay sober strengthened. I still can’t be around people doing shots because my hands will start sweating and urge to drink comes on something fierce. After 8 months my head felt like it cleared up and things became a little easier. But I never let myself think I can handle even one drink no matter what I tell myself. I leaned heavy on my hobbies (books, games and working out)
      If your struggling. Never give up trying. Don’t compare yourself to others, compare yourself to who you were yesterday and if it’s even a little better it’s progress. Forgive yourself but don’t make excuses. Avoid people that enable you, at least until your strong enough to say no because enablers are everywhere.
      I apologize if this was a little much. Being a 36 year old who hadn’t been a year sober for 26 years.. I ramble a bit. You can do it and do it for you.

    Jeff, great video per usual. As a guy in that 50+ age range still trying to push the limits of my conditioning and doing it naturally you have to consider as you age do you really want to start supplementing with TRT, etc. because neurologically your slowly but definitely signaling to your brain that it no longer needs to continue producing testosterone on its own. You do reach a point of no return the longer you supplement this way. And, unfortunately not all prescribing medical professionals are transparent with their patients regarding this topic. As time goes on and this topic gets more heavily researched it would not surprise me if the "safe" administration of unnecessary TRT supplementation does more harm than good in the mid to long term equation. Maybe I'm wrong but most medications and medical supplements should be left in the medically necessary category not vanity category. There's a reason why employers don't recommend cocaine as a recreational supplement to get their employees to be more productive. I realize this is a bad example but you get where I'm going. I'm a user of a couple of different training programs of yours over the last couple of years and avid listener to your channel. I really appreciate the knowledge you put out their for free. You have definitely helped change the way I train, recover, and work around injuries for the better. Thank you!

    Been lifting on and off since since 16, 33 now. Been following jeff since 2012. Id say ive only really seen lasting noticeable muscle past 30. And that is because of experience and knowledge. Knowing exactly what works for me, sets, reps, workout length, intensity techniques etc. You can do it natural, just commit to a plan, the diet(eating sustainably) and listen to your body(extra rest days). Less is more!

    I'm in my mid 40s. Started training again just 3 months ago, after over 5 years off. Dropped about 30lbs, got leaner, still able to build muscle, got stronger, while also increasing my power, endurance, and overall athletic performance, all naturally and without much supps (with protein powder being the only supps that I consume). All my training now is solely for functional fitness and functional strength.
    Train hard. Train smart. Eat right. And sleep right. And many thanks to Athlean X for providing such great and priceless information and knowledge on how to do these things optimally.

    I’ve struggled with depression on and off for the past 15-16 years and it’s effected my training and perceived lack of results. I’ve been doing really good since Nov.20th last year with less stress, my mind’s been on the right path (a lot of relentless positive self talk at the start and continued but less frequent now for maintenance) leading to lower cortisol levels etc. In a year of working strength and hypertrophy phases back and forth, I went from 143lbs to 160lbs and only went up 1.5% bodyfat in 12 months (pre Covid was 159lbs, +7 or 8% bodyfat in 18 months)
    I am not huge, and don’t want to be, but I’m proud of what I’ve finally been able to achieve. I’m succeeding without the use of any PED’s and it was just a matter of getting my mindset right, pushing through, and staying consistent. Also, I’m 36 if that matters.

    49 years old. I began working out more consistently at 25 (some years better than others.) Found Athlean X and consistently have improved. I’m 5’4” 164 lbs and workout weights this week at the heaviest set (4) bench 245/squat 315/ deadlift 315. As a physician I’ve always eaten decently but since my 40s -eating better, alcohol is almost nonexistent, sleeping earlier. I actually curled 75s today so I’m not getting weaker with consistency AND not trying to break PRs every week. Like Jeff I have young kids 5,4, 2. My workouts are around 45 min lifting 30 min walking 5-7 days/week. No more 2 hr sessions - I don’t have time! Thank you Jeff and Jesse!!

    Hi Jeff and Jesse. I love the channel. I’m 63 and have been training since college and never touched a drug, including TRT. I’m about 6’ , 215. Still do relatively heavy lifting. Squat around 350 x3., deadlift 460x3. Bench 5 sets of 5 around 240. Not great, but I feel pretty good for my age. Thanks again for the great content. Tom

    I’m 50 all natty I’ve been working out since I watched Jeff post a vid about how to fix back pain and it worked immediately and I was able to sleep through the night , when I was in my 30’s I did a cycle to try to fix my back , I got strong and big but lost it all when I stopped about 6 mo later only to have to start over again , I feel way better than ever sticking with a program of longevity towards a goal , thank you so much for you and Jesse being a great example, I appreciate your influence .

    Just before my 60th birthday, almost a year ago, I started the Athlean X program. It took about 3-months to get "mind conditioned" to my routine, which included the ever-versatile bands. I am very impressed with the results, putting on almost 20-lbs of muscle. However, I took the last month off. What really surprised me is that my gains remained because I maintained my nutrition.
    I have found the number one way to get re-motivated is to simply watch Jeff's latest upload. My re-start will begin promptly after watching this video.

    I'm one of those 'Started At 40' folks and I'm nearly 50 now. The temptation to start using PEDs is very real, but I've also done enough research to know that the side effects of them are something that will impact me at my age in ways that may not be recoverable.
    I've worked hard, and continue to do so, and I'm very happy with the results. We all want to get bigger and look better, but destroying yourself on the inside in order to look good on the outside is not sustainable and will only lead to you looking awesome inside your coffin.

    Competed naturally 1989 as a middleweight in NJ and pulled 5th and 3rd in a couple of contests, and couldn't hold a candle to some of the older guys I see in the gym now. Diagnosed low T myself (114) and working with my 16year old in gym for last year, and while I'm looking and feeling much better, I watched 40-50 year old guys in 3 months blow by me in growing and losing fat . Makes ME want to go on TRT and justify it as getting to normal levels lol. My son is gaining and looks great for his age and I wish him to be realistic of limits without peds and avoiding TRT bc I don't want him to think peds are the way to go. Plugging away....

    I’m 48. Have been athletic in gymnastics and ballet during my early years. Played sports etc. Didn’t start lifting until I was 36. I have gained weight and lost mass and as long as I put the effort in, i have gained muscle faster in my 40s with no supplements. Just increased protein in all my meals. I don’t know if this makes me a natural but even my brother started lifting late in his 30s, he’s 58 and looks amazing. Just consistent with weight loads and good protein rich meals.

    In college I was able to get two plates in the 90s and didn’t know what I know now thanks to your chanel. I have adopted mike metzer way. And have followed your chanel religiously. I’m 53 and in great shape and lifting not as I was in college but even stronger n have more definition. I’m totally natural and would never consider enhancement short of a protein drink after workouts. I’ve lost 101 lbs and revers diabetes. You guys are my rock

    18 here. Roughly intermediate level with currently 115lb weighted pullup (mostly calisthenics). Not advanced yet, but speaking personally, I would never touch steroids. I value my progress more than my results and the journey ahead far more.

    I can appreciate this. A lot of people fall into that trap and always want more as we age which is good but to a point. For myself even in my late 30s, I have to battle injury and physical therapy now and then from lifting and the mindset very quickly changes when you see what some of those things do permanently.     I am really glad you guys talked about this stuff. So I was lucky to be a Pro Snowboarder a while and then after i went into Spartan Racing and hired 2 seperate coaches for a while to learn from. Over the years from all the research and video watching and my own fitness journey. Now that Im 39 I have a time line of watching guys i know who only does body building or only do the gym recreationally or guys that do steroids. I have seen those people all crash at one point and either gave up or got injured. What I do and have learned is to focus on these important pillars of fitness... Kinetics, Diet ,Yoga, cardio, Agility training ( box jumps, ladders whatever get creative ) and SOME HEAVY LIFTING but not alot bc i dont feel like getting hurt over time. And what I found was at my age I am truly in good shape, I look younger, my knees, joints, nobes are mega healthy and strong. I can do sets of pistal squates on each leg no problem, i can run with out pain and i can still chest press 80lb dumb bells, sets of 6-8 and thats not max but im safe and not injured.. Thats what worked for me... Play the long game, do light weights, body weight, kinetics and eat healthy... Thats my view anyways.

    This is EXACTLY why I love yall. I've been following yall for a long time now. One main reason is because you guys aren't cocky ass jerks like some other youtubers are, yall give out great content with well explained pros and cons of each topic and most of all yall are super humble. That is one trait that is far long forgotten and so hard to find in people now. I can't stress how much I agree with what you both said about how you should ONLY worry about impressing yourself. Cause for me that's what it has always been and I've never worried about what others think of the progress. I'm a man of little confidence so I never think my progress is that great and I've never cared about what people thought of my physique. BUT I do feel a sense of accomplishment when I get compliments at the gym or even outside of the gym when people ask what my routine is and that they want to look like me, it makes me think that I really am progressing and am doing things right. Most of the times its teens who ask me what my routine is and what I do, this is what I tell them. Also gotta mention Jesse's gains are crazy good. Senor Jeff is a great instructor! haha!
    1. NEVER worry about how much the guy next to you is lifting
    2. Focus on proper form over how much you can lift
    3. Consistency is the key
    4. Get lots of rest
    5. Stop trying to compete with others and you'll find you getting better results
    Those are always reminders in my head as I work out everyday. Although I know it I repeat it over and over and this has worked for me.
