    I did this job today and must say it was not pleasant. But there is no need to remove the air filter or move the engine around. As said previously, a 10mm ratchet box wrench is invaluable for getting to that upper-most rear bolt on the water pump. And with just a little bit of patience I was able to remove/replace the water pump, despite the tight clearances. All of which is not to say I didn't appreciate the video - I'm a shade-tree mechanic and this video gave me the confidence to tackle it.

    I just did this on this on the 03' T&C 3.3 and all I had to do was remove the pump pulley and move it around to get to all the bolts. Then you can rotate the pump and the pulley until it falls out the bottom. There was no need to jack the motor or unbolt the engine mount and was able to do it all from the bottom.

    Hey guys, amazing video!! Thanks for putting these together! We have a 2001 grand caravan and I was able to complete the repair without removing the air filter AND didn't have to mess with the engine mounts. I was able to reach all pump bolts from underneath, pretty easily actually. I wish I would have had time to order the part from you guys, but needed it done asap (wife's work car). Anyway, thanks again for the always amazing vids!

    I have done this job a couple of times things I have learned after the first time: 1. you don't have to drop the engine, the mounts have enough play you can use a wood 2x4 or prybar to push the engine towards the drivers side to get the pump out quite easily. the job can be done without axle stands or jacks just turn your wheels to the right and access the bolts from the bottom all you need is a 1/4" drive ratchet and a 10mm socket get the pulley off and start at the back that one is the worst.

      @michaeldevore7772 Pƙed 7 lety

      So you took the bolts out of the mount then used a 2*4 or pry bar to push the engine over ? Just curious, because I will be doing this job in a couple of days. And it was for this same vehicle that you did it?

    • @davidbrennan5
      @davidbrennan5 Pƙed 7 lety +3

      no just loosen all the water pump pulley bolts and work your way around the water pump and remove all the bolts then you can remove the water pump by sneaking it out the bottom if you need to push the engine to the right you can get another 1/2" to 3/4" clearance to remove the pump. the first time I did this job I dropped the engine but I still had to pry the engine over to get the pump out. It is not a fun job so be ready for that. the bolt at the top in the back is a big pain.

    • @michaeldevore7772
      @michaeldevore7772 Pƙed 7 lety +1

      Ok cool, So the engine will just shift if i pry it over towards battery? Thanks for all the tips

    • @davidbrennan5
      @davidbrennan5 Pƙed 7 lety +1

      sometimes you can squeeze it out but I had to pry the engine over both times. I had it on ramps the second time and it made it a bit harder because your arms are extended.. Start with the back upper bolt first!

    I am just finishing doing water pump on a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3 liter. It was a little bit different. Did not have to remove the inner fender wells. The bolts were pretty easy to get out without removing motor mount. The very top bolt was not that hard. I did have a hard time with the bolt closest to the rear end of the vehicle. However the impeller was to deep inside the cavity and would not clear the frame so I did end up having to remove the motor mount as shown. It was a bit difficult to do all of it. I suggest getting some silicone grease to hold the 0-ring in place while reassembling it. Makes that part of it easier.

      I always run the engine up to full operating temperature and wait for the thermostat to open and release trapped air in the system, then the coolant level will drop, then top off the coolant and I'm done, if you skip this procedure your customer will be back with a vehicle that's over heating, also if the vehicle has bleeder screws you need to open them up to release trapped air in the system.

    I just did this on a 2007 Grand Caravan. Make sure you have at least 4 of those pastic tabs just in case you break the old ones off when removing the splash guards. Also when you get to that back bolt on the water pump i used one of those mini ratchet sets with a 10mm socket and put a little paper towel to line the inner socket so it won't slip off the bolt easily. Use an already removed bolt to set the paper towel "liner" inside the socket and then reach through the side to the back (no need to work from under) with just the 10mm socket, push the socket on that last bolt, attach the mini ratchet and start working it off. If the ratchet is "screwing it back in" because the force is too little to click, take wd40 and spray the ratchet head to work in a little oil. This will make the ratchet easier to work off the bolt. Make sure you wipe the ratchet clean to get the excess oil off before using or you will be cursing like a sailor. You're probably going to do that anyways... I hope this helps someone...

    I've seen other diy videos saying to use 3M weather strip gasket sealant. Actually gluing in water pump rubber gasket in first and let sit 15 minutes ,then add some more on outside gasket before mounting with the 5 -10 mm bolts. Just curious, why wasn't that done in your video?

      Seated gaskets dont normally require it...it may not hurt, but i did the job without it, and had no problems

    I think this is common to all auto manufacturers there is always one or more pain in the neck, lower back, stc. items on the vehicle. I can only imagine the nightmares the engineers have dreaming up the positioning of everything.

    no reason to do anything with the engine mount. Place a long pry bar (longer the better) between the tensioner bolt and frame and lean into it as hard as you can, this will push the engine over enough so you can sneak the water pump pulley out, repeat this to remove the pump also. Hope this saves someone some time. When you're flat rate time is $$$

      I have replaced water pumps in much more difficult locations than this, such as pumps that are driven by the timing belt, and Ford Taurus. This pump is a piece of cake to change.
