I have declared you "The Nation's Sewing Professor" because you have a super organized mind and delivery system. No extra words and very concise instructions. Obviously you have a passion in what you do. This comment is late as I just found you and wanted to check you out as to your teaching method. I'm impressed. I am 76 and have been sewing for at least 60 years. So you know I'm not a beginner but am enthralled anyway. What old dog can't learn new tricks?

Spent this whole video looking at the pants I'm wearing, noticing all of the pieces I never look at it think about, unzipping the fly, zipping up the fly, feeling my pockets, feeling the yoke.... there's so many parts of jeans that I've never paid attention to... 🤯

I love seeing a jeans dupe project! I'm pausing just after the fly construction portion to comment that if you find this part to be challenging it might be worth trying a different order of operation than this one. I've tried a variety of methods and my favorite order stitches the shield on earlier and then catches the bottom in the lower front crotch topstitching.
ETA: I would love to know how you adjusted the back side seam to account for your last minute adjustment to the front side seam / front grainline.

Great video for showing how to take a pattern from a pair of ready-made Jeans. I have made a lot of patterns from existing pants. One thing I found is that it the fabric, even if very similar, can give different fit and flatter results. I think you took a lot of fitting issues you didn't like in the original pair into account and addressed them. This is so important. You can always take fabric from the pants, but it is impossible to make them bigger once cut out.
I have created a block pattern for the waist, hip and crotch depth and length. I now use this block when creating a pattern. I have tried to use my jeans to create patterns from, but in the end, when I get the pattern made, I generally can't make the front and back fit correctly. This is why I have my own block and I just use the style lines in the jeans to adjust and create the pattern changes. It does take a lot of practice to do the zipper. I make a mockup first before putting in the zipper, then I can adjust the pattern and make the zipper fit. No matter how many times I have done this zipper, I always struggle too.
This is great encouragement for women who may not believe they can make their own jeans and pants. They are expensive to buy, and good fit is hard to find. I also make a muslin from a less expensive fabric to test my pattern fit without the pockets or the zipper. Thanks for sharing. This was an excellent video.

Thank you so much for taking the time to show how to not only do a rubbing of a pair of jeans, but how to construct them. I think that you did an exceptional job of tracing off the existing pair of jeans, and making necessary changes for better fit. I think you did a really good job constructing the jeans. But. If I may make a suggestion for next time? Do more pressing. Not trying to be judgmental....AT ALL...I think your work is really good...but I kept thinking that the jeans (while in various states of construction) needed more pressing. At the 17:21 mark, the pocket stays weren't pressed well. It's really evident at the 23:01 mark. At the 26:08 mark, the waistband needed more pressing as well. The end result was really good, I think you're a wonderful sewist. I'd humbly invite you to take a look at this CZcams video done by Paul Kruize. He spends as much time (if not more) at the ironing board as he does the sewing machine: https: //czcams.com/video/SDePy3nQnS4/video.html One other suggestion. When you go to do your topstitching, slow down a bit. It will help control the stitching, making for straighter seams. Best, Kay.

The pocket that you were calling a coin pocket is actually a pocket for a pocket watch when men back in the day would have used as wristwatches are a modern invention.
Love how you made the correction to how the leg hung on the Jeans so many times fashion designers do not take into account how everyone has a different shaped leg. Interesting use for the pocket this has always been an issue with jeans for me, this looks like a good fix for me.

For anyone who doesn't believe there is a such thing as raw, God given talent, wen it comes to sewing...(there's no diff than singing, or dàncing)I hope this will enlighten disbelievers, and prove without a doubt, sewing is absolutely a talent. Made greater yet, with practice. Your totally blessed with a God given ability, that may makes it seem to others that, u my dear very possibly, were born, with a bobbin, in ur pretty lil newborn hand.
Me personally have vocal ability, accompanied by the get down, and boogy gene. With a dab of an eye for color, lines, shadowing, and contrasts, etc. as an amateur artist. Which is all hindered, by this lifelong inability to do any of those things in front of anyone other than my 🐈‍⬛🐾cat. (😱😳stage fright to the max...YIKES) You have this wonderful talent, with a cherry on top, plus whip cream. Meaning...
    TALENT+
    SHARING UR TALENT WITH OTHERS+
TEACHING THAT AWESOME TALENT TO THOUSANDS OF VERY APPRECIATIVE PEOPLE.
Me included, becuz unfortunately try, try, and try as I might. I have ever only sewn badly, but u r teaching me to make wat I sew, recognizable, and sew with🤞 functionality. (if not for anyone else, but meyself!) Lol! So thank u so much Mrs. Thread and buttons! That fills me with admiration so great it's overfilling and busting at the seams!

My biggest problem with tracing pants is the back. You went through this part very quickly and I wish there was a more visual way to show what you meant when you said you measured from where the pant folds back to the side seam an then added that amount to the tracing? Am I understanding that correctly? Pants are also a hard fit for in the waist and in the rise. I have to fold over the waistband often. Do you have a link to that issue? Thanks so much for your videos!

@@PatternScout Okay so I finished my jeans and they actually turned out pretty well! It was my first time making jeans, and my first time making self-drafted pants in general. I had some bagginess and fit issues around the crotch, and I had to try to subtly add darts to the back because my yolk area was too big. But a lot of that is probably due to me using stretch jeans as a basis for the pattern, but using non-stretch denim to make my pair. Other than the crotch area and some looseness in the upper butt area, I'm actually super happy with the fit, especially the legs! And all the details came together wonderfully too. Just wanted to say thank you again for this easy to follow tutorial, and I subscribed and am gonna check out your other videos.

Also, wondering if you refer to any sewing technique books. I saw your episode on design and pattern making. I’ve been sewing for more decades than I’ll say and I’ve never put in a proper jeans fly. I’ve also never used a serger! (Can’t wait!) I learn things from you!

They fit great! I wore them a lot in the winter and spring, not as much in the summer since they are so dark. I did end up taking them in a little (I lost a little weight since I made them, but probably could have made them a little tighter anyway since the denim is pretty stretchy).
I have another video from the beginning of the year where I share my favorite sewing/patternmaking/technique resources. I also have found a lot of info here on youtube, just searching for techniques as I need them. CZcams is an awesome resource! :)

First of all thank you so much for sharing your info and tips but I wanted to know what brand and model of sewing machine have you used to build your denim? Thanks a million ❤

Thank you! I use a Pfaff IDT Select and it is a great little machine!

Wow! Beautifully done. Tfs. I'm surprised you didn't add extra belt loops in the back. I take it you don't have any issues with your belt hiking up without the extra loops keeping it in place?

Thanks! I actually rarely wear a belt, so I guess the loops are mostly ✨aestheitc ✨ 😂
