We have a sewing machine to loan in our local library. There are also other devices like 3d printer, a folio printing system for textiles etc. You just buy the fabrics/plastic/folio and get going with the projects. Very efficient if you are just trying out if you like at all sewing etc.

Yes! But not tote bags. Who needs those? I totally skipped tote bags and box t shirts and fully went into a pinafore pattern from the 70s. It was so much more fun and I could actually use the result. I was completely overwhelmed and it took a few weeks but then I had a beautiful dress you can't buy anywhere.
But I wish there was something in between ugly box t shirts and frilly ball gowns. Something for beginners but not boring
When I was a teenager, I made myself a lined linen pantsuit from fabric I’d inherited from my grandmother. I wanted it to be special to remember her and took great care. It had a Jean jacket type jacket. It was absolutely perfect! Then I washed it and the linen shrank a FOOT! Pretreat all fabric!
I feel your pain. As a young married woman and very poor I splurged for a beautiful linen fabric and made a lined skirt and jacket. Then I removed a blueberry pie from my grandmother's oven for her and spilled blueberry juice on the beautiful off-white jacket and skirt. I cried.
No one in my family taught me how to sew. When I needed to mend something, my aunt pointed at her sewing box and said "Figure it out" and I did, eventually. After that I started making my own Barbie and Ken clothes, by [what I know now is called] draping then hand sewing. I used a sewing machine once in my life, in Home Economics, where we made a pillow.
I never owned a sewing machine, so whenever I had to mend something I hand-stitched it. And I was too intimidated by hand-sewing clothing, so I never started the process.
Now I'm 40 and I'm finally determined to learn to use a sewing machine and make my own clothing and accessories. An old high school acquaintance gifted me with a beautiful Singer 347 and I'm determined to learn how to use her, probably starting with mending my worn jeans and making linings for my crocheted bags.
I'm excited to be on this journey to finally realize a life-long dream of making clothing.

It is important! :)
It is a thousand times easier to alter a garment than it is to make one. If you don’t want to start from a pathetic pattern (they are all odd) then find a simple dress and make it yours, take it in, make it shorter, longer, wider etc. I have been making clothes for myself and others all my life. But I prefer to buy a very expensive dress second hand and make it unique. Today I bought a simple shift in a silky patterned fabric for $10. I’ll add darts and a flounce to make it longer and move more when I walk. Then it will be one of a kind.
I have transitioned into upcycling too. I rarely sew and when I do, it's typically my own pattern; however, I am obsessed with CZcams sewist videos.
So true , I regularly make skirts from too small dresses .
It's only easier if you have the skills, always best to start off making your own clothes with easy patterns
I sew from my own created patterns, historical draft patterns, commercial and up cycling or recycling clothes. I love having control over the garment. That way, I can buy better quality fabric, threads, buttons and have it right.

I’m a semi-experienced sewer and love my sewing time but am still building up to making things that fit well and that I’ll love to wear. This was all great advice and very encouraging. I’m going to start cutting into some of my favourite fabrics and stop worrying about being an expert! I look forward to your videos and love your style.
When I first started I had a lot of ill-fitting projects haha. I feel like the only way to become an expert is to make mistakes! It's so hard to cut pretty fabric sometimes, though, I feel that (I definitely have a couple of silks and vintage fabrics that I'm "saving") 😅. Thanks so much for watching! ❤
My experience is quilting and altering ready to wear clothing (If I find a cute blouse that’s too short, I buy two and make one blouse that is long enough) but I found a fabric that I want to make a dress out of (simple sheath dress). Literally cannot find a navy slightly stretchy (because we have all had those days) knee length dress. Im cutting it two sizes bigger on the pattern because of the shoulder fit and will take in all other places, or maybe just sew on belt loops and make a cute bow tie belt. Im not sure

Yes!!!! Same! I was a shopaholic I have no desire to but clothes anymore! You are right they don’t excite me or look as good as before . There’s nothing like making something you love from scratch ❤
I have a heavy duty Pfaff that was purchased new in 1984. It’s still going strong. I highly recommend this brand. I have sewn clothing from sheer to heavy fabrics, upholstery fabrics, outdoor fabrics, and some things I’m certain would be considered a no no on a machine. I’ve cared for it like a car, yearly tuneups and it just keeps going: starting year 38!!
I love my Pfaff! They are really great machines! I've put mine through the ringer and it still shows up for me every day :)
My mom bought me a sewing machine in 2008 for Christmas when I was in middle school… I still have it, and I’m considering getting in sewing. I am exploring crochet and knitting and I’m afraid to overwhelm myself with too many projects/hobbies. Still, it’s nice to have things I’ve made with my own hands

I agree about choosing a project you're excited about to promote follow-through. I started sewing because I wanted to make jeans that actually fit me! They were one of my first 'real' projects and while they weren't perfect, I still love and wear them regularly and learned SO MUCH along the way. Both my sewing machine (Singer Simple) and Serger (Singer 14U64A) were given to me second-hand. The serger was found on the side of the road by my in-laws. Works perfectly and I love it's vintage indestructibleness. :)

I learned to sew in a high school sewing class. Sewed my own prom dress. Sewed some costumes for my kids when they were little. Hadn’t sewn in years until a couple years ago my husband asked if I could sew him some scrub tops from superhero material. He gets so many compliments on them. Now I’m thinking about sewing some of my own garments.
As a man who wants to get into sewing to be a bit more crafty with my fiancee, I really appreciated this video. I'm an obsessive learner who tries to learn as much as possible before I even take on a new hobby or buy a product, you've helped me so much!

As an advanced quilter, longarmer and pattern designer, your videos are encouraging and want me to take more time for garments. I did make a wedding vow renewal dress recently and have a new serger. I did the same type of young person sewing like your with moms support and grandmas knowledge.
I learned on a treadle machine that was my great grandmothers from 1913. I still have it too. Since I’m plus size, I feel that keeps me from moving forward with my garment work. Thanks again for the push.

My mom taught me to sew as a kid in the 80’s and she insisted on creating all kinds of clothes for me that were terribly embarrassing. Miami in the 80’s was very flashy and brand oriented so I couldn’t get into it. Now, I’m 40 and 5’0 tall so I’ve learned to hem and modify just to get by but I’d love to start designing!
The designing part has been the best part for me! Times have definitely changed since we were kids (I'm 39)--much less loyalty to brand names and much more focus on creativity :)

I started sewing when I was at school, but haven't sewn for years and I really enjoyed this. You gave me great reminders and 1 or 2 tips that I'll keep in mind.
As for threading the machine, really great information. Years ago I helped a young friend (in her 20s) with her first sewing project and when I arrived she had threaded the machine and was waiting to do the first seam. She blew me away, she was so eager to sew that she didn't read the manual on how to thread it. So we had to spend quite some time just on threading and why it was important.

I have just made the decision that I want to start sewing again and saw this video. EXCELLENT advice and very encouraging. I've decided to start sewing again because I know what I WANT but don't find it either it isn't the color I want or the fit is wrong (shoulders too narrow or it isn't long enough) or something else.
My mother sewed a LOT - even made my sister's wedding gown, and I grew up being able to tell her "I want it like this except..." and she could do it! She taught me to sew and I've sewn several garments for myself, including a lined jacket (pattern wasn't lined, and I added a contrasting turn-back cuff) but it has been several years since I've done more than make crafty items and mending... This video has definitely encouraged me.

I totally agree when you say even the most complicated project is just a bunch of stitch lines very true......one of my first Projects was a ball gown and I still can't believe I made if ....it's not the most professional looking gown but it sure looks pretty and perfect to wear .....think twice, measure trice,and cut once this is what I learnt with experience....

it's so true that your first sewing project should be something you plan to use and wear! I bought my sewing machine ($175 brother machine on sale at costco in 2016) because I wanted to make myself a halloween costume. I had very little idea of what I was doing, but I got so many compliments on my costume!
For me, when my stitching gets wonky it's almost always because I need to clean my machine and get rid of all the fuzz build up. Even a little build up in the wrong spot can cause my threads to get snarled underneath the plate.
What a great video! I'm going to look through your other videos because I want to start making every day clothes from scratch. I've mostly stayed in the realm of making things like scrunchies and pillow cases and cute aprons. I have weird body proportions, so it's almost impossible to find off the rack garments that fit.

Thank you for this video. I have never seen your videos before. Glad I found it. Your background story is a lot like mine. My grandmother taught me to sew by hand. My mom taught me how to use a sewing machine. I tried making a few things in middle school. I also made a vest with a sunflower fabric. Mostly, I made doll clothes. Just found you, I purchased a new Pfaff, expression 3.5, I’ve had it 3 weeks and haven’t taken it out of the box…this made me go get the Manuel and start looking it over..I had my previous Pfaff for 28 years, I Loved it….I sewed Bridal alterations for 15 years…and surprisingly garment sewing is always on the back burner…maybe I’ll give it a go.I’ve always wanted to make a coat! I think a dress form is a must have item for sewing clothing..
Great video! I finally invested in a better machine from a sewing center and it has made all the difference. My other machines were from Wal-Mart and were consistently a pain. My new machine makes sewing effortless. Not being constantly frustrated by technical problems makes sewing so much more enjoyable.
That was my experience with an earlier cheap machine I had--once I leveled up sewing was so much better!
I've been sewing for several years now, but I'm trying to learn to make my own daily wear clothes. I genuinely dislike shopping for new clothes, so it would be nice to be able to make it myself
This is one of the reasons I sew because you can sit down and thoroughly be in that moment of creating something for yourself or what ever project you are making. Also the more projects you make the more confident you become and unpicking a seam is just one of those things that happen. My motto is do it properly otherwise it will just sit there and either not get finished or just doesn't look right on me and until I fix it then I will be happy with the finished article.

Get a magnet edge guide for your machine. You just keep the edge of the fabric against it as you sew and you will have straight seams:-).
I have that Singer heavy duty sewing machine and I believe the description fits. I have repeatedly sewn four and five layers of denim with it, and it just plows right on through it.

Just found your channel and instantly subscribed. Been sewing since I was 11, and am now in my early 50’s. I’ve made bridesmaids dresses, coats, trousers, skirts, tops etc, and even a wedding dress. I haven’t sewn for a few years now because of I’ll health and not sleeping etc., but I’m DYING to get started again, and feel it could happen any day now, but I’ve lost all my confidence because it’s been so long. ☺️ So thank you for unknowingly being a source of inspiration for me. I'm a bespoke sewer and theater costumer and I use the first machine you mentioned. And I get fabulous results! Making slopers and pressing are the keys. Well done video. I wish you much success!
We have that Singer at our libraries. When Covid hit, we had to stop giving sewing lessons. Fingers crossed, we’ll re-start the classes soon.
You were brave picking a jacket as your first project! I picked really simple things. I have a Babylock machine that does pretty good, but I got a second hand Kenmore for $30 that plows thru everything!
Cleaning the bobbin case area regularly also avoids a lot of problems! I use a pastry brush and it works great for lint!
Thanks for watching and sharing your machines! I have an old Kenmore that is still sewing great--must be about 50 years old. And the tip on cleaning the bobbin case--YES! That is so important! I use one of those air cans for cleaning electronics. I should have included that!
I have a Brother CS6000i that works fine but I had a felt I am more suited to a mechanical machine so I bought a used Kenmore 385 from our local sewing center that was a trade-in and I love it. I also have a 1963 Kenmore that just does straight and zigzag stitching. I don't use it as much because the bobbin is difficult for me to access.
Iv always wanted to learn how to sew, knit, all that but I’m a visual and hands on learner. And Iv found it difficult to learn on my own. But Iv been inspired by the fabrics on spoonflower to give it another shot. I’d love to make clothes for my kids and my husband besides myself.
Good instructions are key. I’ve been sewing since I was very young and sewed a lot of my clothing even in high school when it wasn’t really “cool” as you mention. The one thing I found very frustrating as a new sewer was the instructions that come with patterns. They’re usually very generic and often times there’s an easier and “cleaner” way to sew on a collar, for example. You Tube channels are a wealth of information when it comes to sewing “tips and tricks”. It’s so great that new sewers have this source available to them now.
I agree 100% about the instructions in a lot of patterns. I enjoy sewing because of all the little details, so I try to finish my garments beautifully, which makes them more special to me! :)

I used to teach sewing and you hit the nail on the head. Sewing itself is not complicated. Reading some patterns can be disheartening for beginners though so research that well. Also, I really emphasized that sewing isn’t a race. Slow down and make it right instead of speeding through the project. I learned to sew on an old Singer that weighs as much as a car and garments came out so well, but today’s lightweight machines do a great job too. Thanks for the motivation 😀

I think this was a great video and I really enjoyed it. I agreed with everything you said with one exception. At the risk of sounding awful, please do not borrow someone else's sewing machine. I have worked in a fabric store and this was the number one pet peve. 1) People who sew are using their machine 2) Those who have reluctantly loaned out their machine (myself included) have had their machines returned broken and left with an expensive repair bill. Just bite the bullet and buy a lower cost sewing machine or buy a used one in good shape. If you do not like it then you can resell it.
I should edit to say, borrow under supervision! haha. You are right, I probably would not loan my machine to someone unsupervised! :)

I have one of the singer heavy duty machines. I have sewn double layers of thick wool with 2 layers of fleece lining all at one time! It does the job. I primarily use a 44 year old kenmore made from metal! She’s heavy but sews amazingly!

Hi : ) Here for the first time and I am subscribing. I have been sewing about 50 years and there are still thousands of things for me to learn and master. I just replaced my absolutely beloved machine of 35 years.. a Singer Touchtronic 2000... soooooo futuristic : ) I purchased a very expensive, to me : ), New Baby Lock Presto II. It is sooooooooo different and complex to me.... but, it will be a matter of learning how to use the different functions... and repetition: ) I purchased it from a sewing center another of my (three) machines came from : ). Nothing can replace that hands on help and experience.
My first "real" sewing project in my junior high home economics class was a "curler"/ roller bag. My mom still had that bag decades after I made it : )
Oh.. and I made a two piece suit with snaps and lots of topstitching I wore for my senior picture in 1975 : )

I was given the Singer Heavy Duty for christmas two years ago, and i can confirm that it SEWS! Multiple layers of fabric and denim so far - no leather yet - but won't do, say, plastic velcro to broadcloth. Multiple stitch options, several different feet and is labelled, so if you don't have the threading process memorized, there's numbers and arrows for you. All in all, great machine and it has a great case as well.

hand since I did not have sewing machine! Until my daughter bought me a
Singer Denim, my very first owned sewing machine!
And so Im on the stage of preparing myself on actual sewing, buying the essential
tools and supplies. Watching as much sewing videos on starting with pattern making
and getting to know my machine better! This is just gonna be a hobby for me since
I have been wishing I could sew my own clothes and happy glad got the final chance

Thank you so much, I started designing a little bit very young and worked at an atelier for free a year. After that I had to work very hard for living. Now I got encouraged to do something with fabric again, first the Idea of printing my paintings and designs on garments which I would buy and sell. But I am a self made woman and I truly would only approach something like that by doing the whole process by myself. So I will sew my garments like camis and underwear by myself. I think for starters to buy a thrifted sewing machine would be great!

I can vouch for the singer HD. It will handle many layers of 14 oz denim.
It is completely mechanical so you have to learn to move take-up lever to top when finished with a seam. I think it's good practice for beginner to get used to most manual first.
The singer HD was able to rehem my wrangler 16 oz denim jeans well.
I haven't worked sewing machine sent I school that was 1984, so I do need to start back over with a good beginning sewing machine and patterns
thanks, ive always wanted to sew my own clothes but wasnt sure where to start. theres always been very specific pieces of clothing i want but am unable to find anywhere. now i can just make them myself! gotta practice more first though ofc.
Sewing has always been a life long interest and dream for me to pursue but never had the time. Now that I am retired, I will once and for all fulfill this dream on my bucket list. I've always felt overwhelmed with the world of sewing. There's so much to learn and know however bit by bit, I am starting to feel more comfortable after watching a gazillion videos and taking tons of notes. You are inspiring to me. I feel the same: sewing is a great hobby and probably the best hobby I ever had, it's so rewarding.
But, from my experience of having learnt to sew alone (I'm still learning of course), I disagree about which project to chose because I feel like if I have started with something complicated, I was just stopping that day. Even now, almost two years later, I sometimes just leave complicated projects or the ones that are giving me trouble incomplete and move on to something easier. I guess we are just all different.

Yay for Pfaff! My mom got the Pfaff Creative 2.0 (so sewing machine with embroidery unit but not an embroidery machine) when that came out over 10 years ago and has now bought a new one since the motherboard of that one is broken and they’re not available anymore. It does still sew though, it just can’t “follow” anymore when it’s used intensely and will mess up but after a good maintenance check will work again so I will get that one. Just need to go stay with my mom so she can explain how everything works. I will be keeping the manual old mechanical Pfaff though that I previously got from my mom -which she had bought to take with her when following workshops but when my beginner simple Singer was kinda used up, she gifting that old one to me.
These days I am busy designing what I would find the easiest dresses for double gauze that look good on me. If they don’t look good enough it’s still great to wear at home (disabled, don’t go out much) so it’s never a waste and I love brainstorming and experimenting more than printing out and using patterns lol

My grandma earn her living sewing she - she was very very good at it, haute couture and she taught me ;) I made a few garments back in the late 80s early 90s in my native country - I wanted to pursue it but it was difficult to buy a sewing machine and fabrics etc so I stopped pursuing it. Fast forward 2010, my daughter gifted me that same singer sewing machine you mentioned here in your video (because I was always talking about how I would love to sew again) but I only use it to mend - I should surprise her with a handmade piece of garment ;) I know she will love that - thank you for this video
Awwww I love this lol I'm probably an intermediate sewer but don't know a lot of the basics
I grew up with my grandma who sewed everything like for my cousins entire wedding
But I grew up just making things... The difference between cottons is an example. It's basic but I mad a few hundred masks from quilting cotton and have made hats but I never understood... And know very little about types. Ijust have theifted and hand me down fabric and clothes that I upcycle and mend
Not sure if I will start making clothes specifically but I will for sure be learning from you!!!
The Project Runway machines by Brother are very beginner-friendly. I even bought myself one and love it to death 💚💙💜

I can vouch for the Singer Heavy Duty! I sold my fancier sewing machine and bought that one bc I didn't need all the fancy stitches and features. I do wish it had a speed setting but for the price, I can't complain!

I use my singer 4423 almost every day dress making, quilting, carryon bag making. Never had a problem with it

I really enjoyed your video. I'm 70 years old. I have couture skills and loads of experience, but I stopped sewing because of the lack of good fabrics. Your advice regarding linen and cotton is good, but whatever happened to other fabrics like Gaborone? Could you do a video on where to find good affordable fabrics.
