What is your reason for not doing right sides together on the waistband? That's what my pattern calls for. This is my first sewing project and your video has been super helpful, thanks.
It allows you to do your understitiching on the lining side of the waistband and then you can stitch the outside of the waistband from the outside of your pants giving you stricter topstirching. If you did it the other way you would end up having to stitch the waistband closed from the lining side and it may look sloppy on the right side of the fabric. Just a trick to have nicely finished top stitching. 🥰

Exactly! Actually, my mum is very petite as well, perhaps 5' 3" at best. She had to pay a tailor to make her suits for work and put me in sewing lessons when I was 6 so I could make my own clothes and not have to pay to alter everything (not to mention now I am.her own personal seamstress). Such a valuable skill!

All I’ve got to do is find a pattern - and on that point, do you know of any good men’s jeans patterns out there?

When I made this video I don’t think the Levi rib age jeans were released yet. Though I have seen many jeans and would likely hack this pattern with the Closet Core Ginger Jeans (high waisted version) to get something similar to the rib cage jeans. That would make a fun video to hack some patterns to make it!
@@SheerStitchery honestly, I didn't expect such answer. I am positive that your Babylock cost more than let's say Juki 8700 or its clone. You don't even need a brand new machine... In your case an industrial machine will serve you for life
@@vladspb_ oh, I know a Juki is about 1/4 of the price of my machine but I am mindful of what I invest in and just because I want something doesn’t mean it is practical. 🥰 not to mention I need to buy a new house before getting any more machines as there is no space left! Haha!

Most decent home sewing machines should be able to handle it. I have a Babylock Soprano- not an industrial machine by any stretch and it handled it like a dream. Just be sure to switch to a jeans needle.

@@foxo4992 Those machines are the BEST! I have a Singer from 1948 from my grandmother and it sews AMAZING! Those machines were built to last - no fancy stitches, but I find the consistency of the stitch quality is remarkable.
@@SheerStitchery Ah, mine is also from my grandmother! Not sure she imagined it ending up getting used so much over the years by her grandson, but there you go, haha! It’s by a Swedish company called Husqvarna, and amazingly enough it does do the fancy stitches - zig-zag, wavy lines, etc. - I think it’s from the first generation of machines that did. Well, thanks again, and I’ll let you know how I get on with my lockdown project, and if I have any questions I’ll be sure to ask you! 😊
Great video. Do you think that a seamstress/tailor could make a pattern out of a pair of my own Levi's 513s, and duplicate them? Or would that be a very difficult job? (Levi has stopped making the 513 and they're the only ones that fit me...)
@@SheerStitchery he should be aware that Levi’s have been shrinking to him all this time. The pattern won’t be just the same unless he accounts for new material.
I had some red bias tape in my stash. I pressed it flat then folded it in half and sewed it together on three sides. Turned it right side out, pressed it and then put it in.
I notice that you sew across the zipper feet. Is this just because you’re using a regular zipper for the demo? Because I would have thought that sewing on the metal teeth of a jeans zipper would break the needle?
May I know what type of denim, needle, thread, and machine settings did you use please? What machine are you using? I tried testing sewing on denim jeans but I get thread breakage, bad tension, and jammed needle on parts with multiple layers of denim. 😟
Denim: pre-washed stretch denim from Minerva (65% cotton, 35% polyester, 3% elastaine) with 10% stretch and classified as a heavyweight fabric www.minerva.com/mp/1245273/pre-washed-stretch-denim-fabric-black&variant=1186721 Needle: I used a schemtz Jeans needle 90/14 for all of it, but you can also try a top stitching needle for any of the top stitching. Make sure your bobbin is regular thread when top stitching and only have the heavy top stitching thread in the top. Thread: I used gutermann (100% polyester is stronger than cotton and doesn't "fray" or split as easy). Machine setting: regular stitching (2.5mm length), but you can increase stitching length to 3.5mm for the top stitching Sewing Machine: Babylock Soprano
Yup, 1967 Firebird convertible with numbers matching. And what you can't see is the 1977 Trans Am Smoky and the Bandit edition suped up for racing (not so street legal as the Firebird). You should hear the engine purr!
Can you help? The zipper teeth always ends up showing while I'm wearing them. The reason it's doing this is because the zipper teeth is too close to the opening in the jeans but I've followed the instructions to the letter as far as I know. Looks really unsightly. What in your experience usually causes this? Pls help.
🤔 without a photo is is harder to diagnose but I’ll do my best. Could be: 1. If it only shows when it is worn, it might be too tight and that is why it is showing - pulling the fly past the zipper teeth. Try going up a size in the hips (waistline should be fine if they fit okay there). 2. The fly isn’t sewn in correctly. The fly should cover the zipper complexly. Perhaps I can film a short video with a slow step by step process to help…
@@SheerStitchery Thank you so much for replying. Yes that slow step by step would be so helpful. My homemade jeans fit loosely. The zipper teeth show whether I'm wearing them or not. If you lay them out flat on the table, the teeth show. I compared my jeans with a commercially made pair and discovered that my instructions I have directs you to place the zipper teeth right on the edge of the fly. My commercially made pair is a full 3/8" away from the edge of the fly while my homemade jeans, the teeth sit right on the edge. I'll be saving this video for when I sew another pair. Happy sewing. :D
i ordered a jeans the fabric was nearly identical to yours...........but didn't feel substantial nuff for me felt really odd so i returned it how do u ladies wear such light weight denim............
I would suggest reducing the length (from the bottom) to the desired length. Also, do up a muslin first so you get the right fit and length. Should he pretty easy to do, though.

It will break your needle. You have to pull out the metal teeth before stitching over them if you have a metal zip.
